J. Gordon, published by Frederick Warne & Company, Limited, London and New York, 1932, reprinted 1936.

So far-reaching is the power of words that it is even able to effect major changes in that rival domain, the world of numbers. We shall illustrate our thesis by considering the word square, a language form long regarded as Word's answer to Number's magic square.

Kriss Kross Kraft, Edward L. Lee Feb 1968

Kriss Kross Kraft, Edward L. Lee

Word Ways

Allied to the ordinary crossword puzzle, and often found in crossword puzzle magazines, is a type of puzzle known as "Kriss Kross." Essentially, it consists of a blank diagram of interlocking letter paths, and a word list representing some particular category, such as trees, birds, or cities. The number of words on the list exactly equals the number of words required to fill the blank diagram, and it is the solver's problem to insert the words into the diagram in such a fashion that they interlock correctly, with the entire word list being used and the diagram being filled completely.

Apostolos In The New Testament, James Maynard Bragg Jan 1962

Apostolos In The New Testament, James Maynard Bragg

Graduate Thesis Collection

In this study we will attempt to discover the background of [apostolos] among its pagan ancestors. In addition to this area, we will also be concerned with the Jewish background which exerted a formative influence on the meaning of the word. Finally, an attempt will be made to see the result of this combination of backgrounds as it came to be reflected in the New Testament.

A Semantic Study Of Ecclesia Before 100 A.D., Harold Edwin Cline Jan 1959

A Semantic Study Of Ecclesia Before 100 A.D., Harold Edwin Cline

Graduate Thesis Collection

In studying the background and origin of meaning for this word [ecclesia], this paper will seek to investigate the pagan, the Jewish, and the Christian literature in this order. Of couse, as the preliminary discussion has so far indicated, the primary weight and burden of study will be upond the Septugintal influence. The three stages to be developed are reminiscent of the comment of R.C. Trench in his opening comments concerning ecclesia. He named them as heathen, Jewish, and Christian. The development of these stages will be united and brought together to make some pertinent conclusions in the final chapter …

Turkish Reversals And Palindromes, Robert Devereux

Word Ways

After reading Dmitri Borgmann's discourse on "Welsh: Reversed English" in the February 1985 Word Ways and noting his invitation (or challenge) to replicate his studies in other languages, I decided to determine what a similar examinaiton of the Turkish lexicon would reveal.

An Objective Study Of Ii Peter, Maurice E. Beery Jan 1951

An Objective Study Of Ii Peter, Maurice E. Beery

Graduate Thesis Collection

II Peter has been a very controversial epistle. To use the term, 'has been', takes us as far back as the second century, for the early church fathers were sceptical of its value and authenticity and some have claimed that it came near not being part of the New Testament canon.

You will note that this study is not a commentary but rather an introduction to the problems that have arisen concerning this epistle.

A Study Of Latin Words In The Greek New Testament, Esther Laverne Benjamin Jan 1949

A Study Of Latin Words In The Greek New Testament, Esther Laverne Benjamin

Graduate Thesis Collection

The primary purpose of this work is to call attention to the existence of Latin words in the Greek New Testament and to present an objective study of them. As a corollary to this study, the impact of Graeco-Roman culture upon Judea in terms of these words, their synonyms, and related words is pointed out. Glimpses of the background of the New Testament figures afforded through this study lend perspective to the New Testament pages.

The Transfer Of Training From Latin To French And Spanish, Pauline Ray Morton-Finney Jan 1941

The Transfer Of Training From Latin To French And Spanish, Pauline Ray Morton-Finney

Graduate Thesis Collection

The purpose of this study is to investigae the relationship between Latin and French, between Latin and Spanish, and to evaluate the assumption of many language teachers that high school pupuls who have had one year of Latin tended, on the whole, because of that fact, to do better academic work in Franch and Spanish as measured in terms of marks received, than did pupils who had not studied Latin.

The Relationship Between The Home Environment And Certain Phases Of Achievement, Maude M. Meriwether Jan 1938

The Relationship Between The Home Environment And Certain Phases Of Achievement, Maude M. Meriwether

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study is the outgrowth of the writer's conviction that the home environment has a great deal to do with the lack of progress among the retarded pupils and the rapid achievement of our better students. After visiting the homes of what are often termed, "the problem cases," we usually return with the feeling that with such home conditions, it is a great wonder that the pupils progress as well as they do.

Philosophical Mysticism As Epistemological Method, Glenn Negley Jan 1934

Philosophical Mysticism As Epistemological Method, Glenn Negley

Graduate Thesis Collection

The general problem of the definition of mysticism may be approached in either of two ways.  We might assemble the elements of all types and method of mysticism, and, by the use of the critical method, arrive thereby at a description and definition of the mystical experience in its most general sense; or we might develop a restricted, specific definition by ignoring certain aspects of that type of experience which might, in a broad, general sense, be called mystical.

The Changing Methods In The Teaching Of English Composition Since 1850, Eva H. Lycan Jan 1934

The Changing Methods In The Teaching Of English Composition Since 1850, Eva H. Lycan

Graduate Thesis Collection

During the depression public education has been subjected to serve criticism by the taxpayers who are demanding retrenchment in the schools.  Some critics have asserted that the methods of teaching and the subject matter of such basic courses as English have undergone few changes since those days of the little red school house when a teacher could be hired for a "song".  These statements have raised in the minds of those most interested such questions as - What have been the changes in the methods of the teaching of English composition since 1850?

Zazzification In American Slang, Roger W. Wescott Aug 1897

Zazzification In American Slang, Roger W. Wescott

Word Ways

The coinage zazzification is my expansion of the American slang term zazzy (jazzy, sexy). I use it to designate the strong tendency, in American English, to render words slangier than they already are by substituting a Z-sound (sometimes written ZZ) for other consonants.
