Antigrams From Word Ways: A Retrospective, A. Anil

Word Ways

In the November 2009 Kickshaws, Ove Michaelsen presented a selection of antigrams from various sources, but excluded mention of any from Word Ways. I've presented nearly 200 herein and felt a review of the best of these would give Word Ways due credit and balance out Ove's list. A few of these don't agree grammatically but were apt enough otherwise to forgive and include.

Witwits - Part 1, Steve Kahan

Word Ways

A WITWIT is merely an acronym for "Where In The World Is That?," an orthographic challenge that I introduced in May I Have A Word With You?. In the first of this seven-part series, two dozen letter sequences have been extracted, without interruption, from either the beginning, middle, or end of a word. Reinserting each into its proper position at the rate of one per hour, you'll identify the sources of all these sequences in a single day. Moreover, you'll certainly have the last laugh and avoid a fracas provided you recognize that HAHA came from BROUHAHA!

Word Ways

Webster's Tenth Collegiate dictionary lists synonyms of headword adjectives in two ways: in small caps in the main definition set, and at the end with the heading syn followed by a group of additional small cap synonyms. Approximately 220 of the headword adjectives merit the syn treatment, and the one thousand synonyms they dissect represent about one-sixth of the headword adjectives.

Shaping Shakespeare, Reflecting History: Adaptations Of Othello For Children In 1990s Britain, Karley Adney Jan 2010

Shaping Shakespeare, Reflecting History: Adaptations Of Othello For Children In 1990s Britain, Karley Adney

Scholarship and Professional Work of the Provost's Staff

In this article, two 1990s British adaptations of Shakespeare's Othello for children are studied with the primary critical lens of New Historicism. This analysis concerns itself with the cultural resonances adaptors pass to their readers and how those traces shape the Shakespearean texts they adapt. This study contends that cultural contexts, transactions, and negotiations of the time incontestably shape these adaptations. To truly appreciate the choices made by the adaptors of the 1990s, reflections on Britain in the 1980s serve as points of comparison. As a result, analyzing and accounting for the cultural influences provides a whole reading of the …

Orwellian Language And The Politics Of Tribal Termination (1953-1960), Casey R. Kelly Jan 2010

Orwellian Language And The Politics Of Tribal Termination (1953-1960), Casey R. Kelly

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

From 1953 to 1960, the federal government terminated sovereign recognition for 109 American Indian nations. Termination was a haphazard policy of assimilation that had disastrous consequences for Indian land and culture. Nonetheless, termination cloaked latent motivations for Indian land within individual rights rhetoric that was at odds with Indian sovereignty. Termination highlights the rhetorical features of social control under capitalism portrayed in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), in which opposing principles are fused and inverted. This essay critiques termination’s Orwellian language to show how ideographs of social liberation are refashioned by the state to subvert Indian sovereignty and popular dissent.

Reading The Story Of Miriai On Two Levels: Evidence From Mandaean Anti-Jewish Polemic About The Origins And Setting Of Early Mandaeism, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

New Testament scholars, drawing on Mandaean sources to shed light on the Gospel of John, may have done more harm than good to both Johannine and Mandaean studies. Nonetheless, approaches to the Gospel of John developed over the past 50 years have shed light on the Gospel’s Jewish context and the clues its polemical emphases can provide about the time and setting in which it was written. J. L. Martyn’s suggestion that the Gospel of John can be read on “two levels”, telling us about the context in which it was written while telling a story set in the time …

Vidyaranya Swami's "Pañca Viveka" And Thomas Aquinas' "Quinque Viae" In The Light Of Today's Science, Klaus K. Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In the context of recent attempts to shore up atheism with philosophical and scientific arguments the construction of rational proofs for the existence of God is receiving renewed attention. Over against the assertion of some scientists that religious belief is both unscientific and irrational, philosophers and theologians argue that the study of nature itself offers a great deal of evidence for the existence of a Creator. They are supported by numerous reputable scientists, the authors of book titles like The Language of God or The Mind of God and many others. it is noteworthy that Google has over two million …

Trading Places, Richard Lederer, Norm Storer Aug 2009

Trading Places, Richard Lederer, Norm Storer

Word Ways

A number of words become new words when, contemporaneously, the front letter is looped to the back and the back to the front. The first and last letters must be different, of course, and the result of this double loop is that the first and last letters are exchanged. If the middle letters are palindromic, the pair becomes palindromic.

Back To Albuquerque Again, Steve Kahan Aug 2009

Back To Albuquerque Again, Steve Kahan

Word Ways

Our third visit to Albuquerque offers a new collection of words named in honor of the city. Each contains a pair of identical letter triads that are separated by at least one other letter. After their excision, any gaps that have been created are closed by compression in order to form the residue of the original word. Said residues, found in Column A, require the reintroduction of appropriately placed triads found in Column B in order to reestablish the original Albuquerque word. As has become customary, five impostors are included in Column B, since each triad is available for use …
