Long Pair Isograms, Jeff Grant Aug 2012

Long Pair Isograms, Jeff Grant

Word Ways

Darryl Francis's article New Pair Isograms in the February 2012 Word Ways brought back memories from my early days of dabbling with word play. After discovering the beautiful symmetry of words like HORSESHOER and INTESTINES in Language on Vacation (Dmitri Borgmann, 1965), I spend many hours scouring the Oxford English Dictionary for new examples. Imagine my elation on finding CHARACTERETH and INACCIDENTATED.

Two Palindrome Recreations, Jim Puder Aug 2012

Two Palindrome Recreations, Jim Puder

Word Ways

As anyone who has ever sincerely tried, yet failed ignominiously, to read all the way through someone else's long list of sentence palindromes has reason to know, the real fun in palindromes lies mainly in their making, not in their reading. Two of the more structured ways of enjoying palindrome composition involve the application of a systematic subject constraint to this already much constrained form. In one, one selects some limited set of related words, such as the names of the U.S. States or presidents, and attempts to use as many as possible in short palindromic passages. In the other, …

Centerpieces - 1, Steve Kahan

Word Ways

When the letters in each of the twenty words below are appropriately permuted, what results serve as centerpieces of new words which begin and end with the same letter. For example, rearranging the letters of RAINS into RANSI and flanking this centerpiece with a pair of "T"s produces TRANSIT.

A Magic Tour Of Europe, Jeremiah Farrell Aug 2012

A Magic Tour Of Europe, Jeremiah Farrell

Word Ways

The map depicts a reasonably good picture of seven European countries and their connection by six numbered air routes. With the magician's back turned the subject starts in any country and begins his tour by calling out in sequence the numbers of his flights. When he completes his tour to his satisfaction he announces his ending country. The magician can immediately name his starting country and the direct route to return to it.

One-Letter Words: A Dictionary, A. Ross Eckler Aug 2012

One-Letter Words: A Dictionary, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

Authored by Craig Conley and published in 2005 by HarperCollins, this 232-page book claims that one thousand one-letter words exist. Since there are only 26 letters, this is mathematically impossible; Conley instead presents one thousand different meanings of one-letter words, often with literary citations.

Between Theory And Reality: Cosmopolitanism Of Nodal Cities In Paweł Huelle’S Castorp, Ania Spyra Jul 2012

Between Theory And Reality: Cosmopolitanism Of Nodal Cities In Paweł Huelle’S Castorp, Ania Spyra

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

FIVE YEARS BEFORE the publication of his novel Castorp, the Gdansk writer Pawel Huelle published a short piece of the same title in the essay collection Inne historie (1999), the title of which-translated as either "other stories" or "other histories"-consciously plays with the difficulty of writing a history of Gdansk, a theme to which almost all of the short pieces in this collection somehow return. The essay tells the story of a literary correspondence between a Lvov pastor and the writer Thomas Mann, in which Mann voices regret over some unelaborated ideas and abandoned storylines in The Magic Mountain. …

Linguistic Devices, Emotionality, And Memorability Of Computer Mediated Communication, Angela M. Mion May 2012

Linguistic Devices, Emotionality, And Memorability Of Computer Mediated Communication, Angela M. Mion

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

I examined whether college students use shortcuts, pragmatics, and errors in text messages differently depending on their gender and the emotionality of the message. Results indicate that the prevalence of particular shortcuts differed across happy, sad, and angry messages, but gender did not influence use of linguistic devices. In a second study, I examined the emotionality and memorability of text messages versus voicemails. Results indicate that texts may be remembered better than voicemails, and happy, sad, and angry messages may be remembered differently by men and women.

New Life: Negotiating Indigenous Women's Identity In The Context Of Globalization, Angela K. Miller May 2012

New Life: Negotiating Indigenous Women's Identity In The Context Of Globalization, Angela K. Miller

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Two years ago, I began researching where I wanted to study abroad. I desired a country that spoke Spanish, which I had studied since the age of six, and that would be relevant to my life in the United States. For these reasons, I chose Mexico, a place that, because of it' s geographical proximity and economy, has strong relations with my own nation. As a student of International Studies and Anthropology, I also sought a program that would allow me to interact with locals outside of a classroom setting. I decided on SIT World Learning and its program "Sustainable …

Speech Perception In Children With Autism, Caitlin Louise Weber May 2012

Speech Perception In Children With Autism, Caitlin Louise Weber

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This study involved a) a detailed analysis of current research regarding speech perception in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), b) a literature review on current approaches to therapy for children with ASD, and c) a series of observations in clinic and school settings. Observations were made at the Independence Academy and Riley Children's Hospital. The review of current research showed that while children with ASD are less influenced by visual cues than typically developing children, they still benefit from the addition of visual cues to speech perception and do not lack auditory-visual integration skills. Two approaches to therapy, the …

An Integrated Approach: Incorporating Literature And Writing Into Middle School Mathematics Instruction, Amanda Renee Huffman May 2012

An Integrated Approach: Incorporating Literature And Writing Into Middle School Mathematics Instruction, Amanda Renee Huffman

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Integrated curriculum, including integrated mathematics curriculum, is becoming more common in classrooms as teachers look for ways to improve students' understanding and performance across the board. Specifically, the presented thesis explores and reflects on the implementation of meaningful integration of literature and writing into mathematics instruction to promote students' mathematical literacy. Through carrying out an action research project involving teaching an integrated mathematics enrichment unit with the novel The Number Devil: A Mathematical Adventure by Hans Magnus Enzensberger and constantly reflecting and analyzing the lessons conclusions were drawn. Cross-curricular mathematics instruction can work if carried out effectively and it can …

The Making And Breaking Of A Language: The French And Spanish Effect Upon The Catalan Regional Language, Margaret Emilyn Cychosz May 2012

The Making And Breaking Of A Language: The French And Spanish Effect Upon The Catalan Regional Language, Margaret Emilyn Cychosz

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Almost four hundred years ago, the French and Spanish governments divided the Catalan border regions located between their respective countries. The subsequent centuries have seen the expansion and development of the Catalan language in Spain and the demise of the Catalan language in France, where it has nearly deteriorated to disuse. Is this a reflection upon the French and Spanish culture or was it simply governmental policy? If so, what did the central governments of Madrid and Paris do in the centuries following the division that resulted in this contrasting development of Catalan? What effect did the usage of Catalan …

Banananames, . Anil, A. Ross Eckler May 2012

Banananames, . Anil, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

Words like LOGOLOGICAL, which alternate vowels and sonsonanats could use a succinct name. David Morice's The Dictionary of Word Play cites them only with reference to numbers, as "alternating vowel-consonant number name", a wordful description rather than a handy name. May we suggest "banananames", in the spirit of Agamemnon, Albuquerque and Miami words which are named after prime examples.

Typoclycemic Anaphoric Verse, Dave Drayton May 2012

Typoclycemic Anaphoric Verse, Dave Drayton

Word Ways

Anaphoric verse - a term taken from the word 'Anaphora' - is poetry that involves the "repetition of a word at the beginning of successive utterances," Motte 2007 pp. 209. Inspired by the power that such technique lends to a text, each repetition potentially a reiteration, I sought to employ it with a further constraint that I believed would serve to even better illustrate the anophora's potential for stern, powerful imagery through accretion.

Hebrew Or Japanese?, Solomon W. Golomb May 2012

Hebrew Or Japanese?, Solomon W. Golomb

Word Ways

1. INTRODUCTION

It is quite common that, for any two languages, there will be words that look or sound alike, but with different meanings. French words that look like English words but with different meanings in the two languages are called faux amis ("false friends"). In some cases they are from unrelated roots (e.g. French pain means "bread" and rue means "street". In other cases, words that began the same evolved different meanings. From its Latin roots, concurrence basically means "running along side of", which in English came to mean "agreement", but in French it means "competition."
