Defying Borders: Transforming Learning Through Collaborative Feminist Organizing And Interdisciplinary, Transnational Pedagogy, Terri Carney, Margaretha Geertsema Sligh, Ann M. Savage, Ageeth Sluis

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The authors provide a case study of how a group of faculty members was able to initiate a transformation in student learning and institutional structures at a small university in the Midwestern U.S. through the introduction of collaborative feminist organizing and pedagogy. It details faculty-led initiatives that set the stage for innovative teaching and learning, and it describes the authors' experience in the face of resistance when introducing a global women's human rights course into the university's new core curriculum. Because of its divers, interdisciplinary and transnational content, this course challenged deeply ingrained disciplinary and pedagogical borders of both traditional …

Constructions Of Femininity: Women And The World's Columbian Exposition, Lauren Alexander Maxwell Mar 2009

Constructions Of Femininity: Women And The World's Columbian Exposition, Lauren Alexander Maxwell

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The women of the Queen Isabella Association were the embodiment of what has been termed the ‘New Woman.’While the New Woman was an amalgamation of many different trends, historians agree that she “represents one of the most significant cultural shifts of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.”5 These women chose to “move beyond domesticity” and fought to become equal members of American sociopolitical life.6 Joanne Meyerowitz argues that their greater significance was the tendency of the New Woman to “challenge the dominant Victorian sexual ethos.” 7 She inserted herself into the public sphere on her own terms, without the protection …

Out Of India: Immigrant Hindus And South Asian Hinduism In The United States, Chad M. Bauman, Jennifer Saunders

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The article provides a survey of research on immigrant Hindus and South Asian Hinduism in the United States, focusing in particular on certain trends in the development of American Hinduism (e.g., Americanization, protestantization, ecumenization, congregationalization, homogenization, ritual adaptation) and prominent themes in more recent scholarship on the topic (e.g., race, transnational connections, and Hindu nationalism).

Liberal Theology In The Weimar Era: Schleiermacher And The Question Of Religious Subjectivity In The Methodenstreit Between Georg Wobbermin And Karl Barth, Brent Hege Jan 2008

Liberal Theology In The Weimar Era: Schleiermacher And The Question Of Religious Subjectivity In The Methodenstreit Between Georg Wobbermin And Karl Barth, Brent Hege

Philosophy, Religion, and Classics

Recent historical studies of liberal theology in the Weimar era have called into question the popular thesis of liberal theology's sudden demise and disappearance coincident with the First World War and the publication of Karl Barth's Römerbrief. Historians of this period of theology are rediscovering a vibrant liberal theology active well into the 1920s and even into the 1930s. One of these liberal theologians, Georg Wobbermin, was particularly active in this period, and his work serves as an example of a constructive liberal theology pursued in the midst of dialectical theology's rise to prominence on the German-speaking theological scene. Wobbermin's …

Comparative Theology, Comparative Religion, And Hindu-Christian Studies: Ethnography As Method, Kristin Bloomer Jan 2008

Comparative Theology, Comparative Religion, And Hindu-Christian Studies: Ethnography As Method, Kristin Bloomer

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Concerns that likely inspired today's panel can be traced textually to the beginnings of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and to the earliest writings of what we now call Hinduism. In the field of Hindu-Christian studies, these concerns suggest ethnographic approaches that are not in themselves new, but which borrow in potentially new ways from the methodological tool-boxes of anthropology, theology and the history of religions.

Nine More- Or Less-Related Observations On Historical Approaches To Hindu-Christian Studies, Brian K. Pennington Jan 2008

Nine More- Or Less-Related Observations On Historical Approaches To Hindu-Christian Studies, Brian K. Pennington

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

For the purposes of this panel discussion, it seems more appropriate to make a series of suggestions and observations about the difficulties and promises of writing history within a Hindu-Christian framework than to offer a paper arguing a single point or perspective. Hindu-Christian history presents a particular set of challenges given the shifting political and material conditions that have attended the dramatic encounter between these disparate cultures and traditions. In what follows I attempt to articulate some of the larger issues with which I wrestle as I study and write Hindu-Christian history.

When Is Command-And-Control Efficient? Institutions, Technology And The Comparative Efficiency Of Alternative Regulatory Regimes For Environmental Protection, Peter Z. Grossman, Daniel H. Cole Jan 1999

When Is Command-And-Control Efficient? Institutions, Technology And The Comparative Efficiency Of Alternative Regulatory Regimes For Environmental Protection, Peter Z. Grossman, Daniel H. Cole

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

The nominal efficiency of a regulatory regime is determined by comparing its social costs and benefits; the regime is nominally efficient if it produces benefits in excess of its costs. Thus, a regulatory regime can be at once nominally efficient and relatively inefficient. A regulatory regime that is nominally efficient in the early days of pollution-control efforts, when increments of environmental quality are relatively cheap, may (but will not necessarily) grow less efficient over time - producing less return on each dollar invested - as increments of environmental quality grow increasingly expensive. A regulatory regime that is more efficient in …

The Diary Of Calvin Fletcher And The Historians, George W. Geib Jan 1998

The Diary Of Calvin Fletcher And The Historians, George W. Geib

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

While we all make New Year's resolutions, few of us ever keep them with the tenacity that Calvin Fletcher kept the one he apparently made on this day. The diary that he had begun in fragmentary fashion in 1817 and continued intermittently to 1829, he maintained religiously thereafter. In so doing, he provided us with an extraordinary record of his life and times. Published in nine volumes by the Indiana Historical Society from 1972 to 1983, The Diary of Calvin Fletcher represents perhaps the single most important printed source for understanding Indiana's history. In commemoration of Fletcher's two-hundredth birthday on …

Monarchist Clubs And The Pamphlet Debate Over Political Legitimacy In The Early Years Of The French Revolution, Paul R, Hanson

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

On the morning of 14 December 1790, an angry crowd surrounded the royal prison in Aix en-Provence and forced the release of the marquis de la Roquette and the avocat au parlement Jean Joseph Pascalis. Led by militant members of the Club des anti-politiques, a radical club in Aix composed largely of artisans, the crowd escorted the two men through the streets of Aix to the elegant Cours Mirabeau, where each was hanged by a rope from a street lantern. Later that day the same fate befell Andre-Raymond Guiramand, an elderly chevalier of St. Louis who in recent days had …

Four Responses To Prof. Dharampal's "Bharatiya Chitta Manas And Kala", Francis X. Clooney

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

For decades Prof. Dharampal has been well-known and respected for his research on eighteenth-century India; his analyses of a wide range of social, cultural, political economic and technological issues have been respected and valued during this time. Bharatiya Chitta manas and Kala -- perhaps, "The Indian Sense of Consciousness, Mind and Time" -- is both a continuation of his earlier work and a new venture in reflection on larger and more elusive religious and cultural issues.

The Federalist Revolt: An Affirmation Or Denial Of Popular Sovereignty?, Paul R, Hanson

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

After nearly two centuries of relative neglect by historians, the Federalist revolt of 1793 finally is receiving the attention it deserves. Book-length studies now exist for each of the main Federalist cities, and several articles have considered various aspects of either Federalism or the Federalist revolt.1 We are thus in a position to begin a fuller and more informed evaluation of the character and significance of the Federalist revolt...

Christianity And 'Other Religions': Contributions From The Work Of F. Max, Ronald Neufeldt Jan 1992

Christianity And 'Other Religions': Contributions From The Work Of F. Max, Ronald Neufeldt

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The history of Christian Thought in the West is not notable for its efforts to come to grips with the claims of other religious traditions, except for the purpose of proselyizatioin, i.e. the concern to save souls. The attitude taken by Christian Churches toward other religions has often been labelled as exclusivism. In its extreme form its attitude has found expression in the assertion that among all peoples of the world, Christians alone have a corner on the truth.

The History And Influence Of Black Baseball In The United States And Indianapolis, Scott Clayton Bower Mar 1991

The History And Influence Of Black Baseball In The United States And Indianapolis, Scott Clayton Bower

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

When Americans discuss the history of baseball, names like Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Connie Mack, and Walter Johnson are mentioned. But what about men like Rube Foster, Buck Leonard, C. I. Taylor, Josh Gibson, and Oscar Charleston? Most American baseball fans know little about black baseball and the lives of black players. A study of black baseball, focusing on the Negro leagues, answers some of the questions baseball fans and historians might ask out of ignorance. How did baseball become segregated? How did the Negro leagues evolve? What was life like for black baseball players? How was the …
