The photo here was recently found among material owned by the Bjorling family. We can see Jussi being interviewed, together with Aμna-Lisa, by the radio station WOL. This is not from one of his four previously known USA radio interviews, which are all preserved in recordings.

Available Now: Cds And Dvd Of Jussi Bjorling (And A Cd Of Gosta B.)

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Your new copy of the JBS Newsletter features Stephen Hastings's definitive review of Bluebell's final CD issue, the 2-disk set Jussi Bjorling: Concerts in Finland and the USA (1940-1957).

Fundamentally important points made in that review are that "the Bjorling we hear here is at his very best," with his singing of five Sibelius songs "unmatched in its beauty" and in sound that is "restored to exceptionally vivid effect by Seth Winner."

James Melton: The Tenor Of His Times By Margo Melton Nutt, William C. Clayton

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Those of us who love James Melton's singing have been waiting a very long time for this informative and revealing biography/memoir. The author, hi s daughter and only child, attests that she spent "twenty plus" years writing it, and the book has been well worth the wait. Drawing on family letters and newspapers (thanks mainly to her mother's voluminous scrap books), she has interwoven her father's dynamic life with her own participation and memories in a volume redolent of triumph and later troubles.

Carol Jean Delmar has written a personal memoir of her parents that gives glimpses of the musical milieu that they belonged to in 1930s Central Europe. Her father Franz Jung was a young bass-baritone graduate of the Neues Wiener Konservatorium, chosen in 1936 for a promising career by a prestigious opera agent.

This review was published in the Italian magazine "Musica" in June 2013. I hope the contents will be of some interest even though they were conceived for music-lovers less well-informed about Jussi's recordings than the average reader of this Journal.-s.h.

Jussi Bjorling And His Accompanist Bertil Bokstedt's Memories Of His Greatest Soloist., Carl Friedner

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Bertil Bokstedt was born in the south of Sweden, Skane, in 1919 and joined the Stockholm Opera House (Kungliga Operan, in those days called Kungliga Teatern) in 1942 where his first task was to coach the singers. Later he began to conduct. Between 1969 and 1980 he was intendent (general and artistic manager) of the 18th century theater of Drottningholm about 7 miles west of Stockholm, a job that partly coincided with his assignment as general manager of the Stockholm Opera House 1971-77.

Gosta Bjorling 1912-2012, Harald Henrysson Nov 2021

Gosta Bjorling 1912-2012, Harald Henrysson

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

This year is the 100th anniversary of Gosta Bjorling's birth-a talented tenor who would most likely be better known if he hadn't lived in the shadow of his still more talented brother Jussi. David Bjorling's third son ( christened Karl Gustav) was born on 21 September 1912, while his father David was touring with an opera and operetta company. Since Gosta had the same career as a singing prodigy as his brothers Olle and Jussi, his first concert with them on 12 December 1915 in Orebro took place a few months after he had turned three! During the early years …

Reminiscences Concerning Bluebell's Final Commercial Issue, Seth B. Winner

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

ABCD 116 has been announced as the final issue from Bluebell of Sweden. For me, this news is a bittersweet farewell to a company that for 30 years had dedicated its efforts to issuing the surviving unpublished broadcast recordings of Jussi Bjorling, and then gone on to bring the work of other Swedish vocal artists to international notice, in its "Great Swedish Singers" series. In fact, Bluebell kept the Bjorling legacy alive and before the public more reliably than any of the big corporations that the great Swedish tenor had recorded for. Commendably, this little company kept its issues in …

A Study In Soft Robotics: Metrics, Models, Control, And Estimation, Levi Thomas Rupert Nov 2021

A Study In Soft Robotics: Metrics, Models, Control, And Estimation, Levi Thomas Rupert

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional robots, while capable of being efficient and effective for the task they were designed, are dangerous when operating in unmodeled environments or around humans. The field of soft robotics attempts to increase the safety of robots thus enabling them to operate in environments where traditional robots should not operate. Because of this, soft robots were developed with different goals in mind than traditional robots and as such the traditional metrics used to evaluate standard robots are not effective for evaluating soft robots. New metrics need to be developed for soft robots so that effective comparison and evaluations can be …

Large-Scale Reality Modeling Of A University Campus Using Combined Uav And Terrestrial Photogrammetry For Historical Preservation And Practical Use, Bryce Berrett, Cory Vernon, Haley Beckstrand, Madi Pollei, Kaleb Markert, Kevin Franke, John Hedengren Nov 2021

Large-Scale Reality Modeling Of A University Campus Using Combined Uav And Terrestrial Photogrammetry For Historical Preservation And Practical Use, Bryce Berrett, Cory Vernon, Haley Beckstrand, Madi Pollei, Kaleb Markert, Kevin Franke, John Hedengren

Faculty Publications

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) enable detailed historical preservation of large-scale infrastructure and contribute to cultural heritage preservation, improved maintenance, public relations, and development planning. Aerial and terrestrial photo data coupled with high accuracy GPS create hyper-realistic mesh and texture models, high resolution point clouds, orthophotos, and digital elevation models (DEMs) that preserve a snapshot of history. A case study is presented of the development of a hyper-realistic 3D model that spans the complex 1.7 km2 area of the Brigham Young University campus in Provo, Utah, USA and includes over 75 significant structures. The model leverages photos obtained during the historic …

Shrinkage Of Rio Grande Silvery Minnow After Preservation In Formalin And Storage In Ethanol, Joshua D. Grant, Thomas P. Archdeacon Nov 2021

Shrinkage Of Rio Grande Silvery Minnow After Preservation In Formalin And Storage In Ethanol, Joshua D. Grant, Thomas P. Archdeacon

Western North American Naturalist

Understanding how the preservation process affects fish morphology is important for studies that use museum collections as voucher specimens. Sixty-nine Rio Grande silvery minnows (standard length [SL] 32.14–81.65 mm) were observed over 545 days during a formalin-to-water-to-ethanol preservation procedure. Median standard length decreased by the end of each preservation step; specimens shrank 1.06 mm in formalin solution, 1.97 mm in 35% ethanol, 2.17 mm in 50% ethanol, and 2.48 mm in 70% ethanol. Peak shrinkage occurred at 365 d, with a median decrease of 3.86 mm (SL 29.57–75.98 mm). After 545 days, Rio Grande silvery minnows began to increase in …

Molecular Identification Of Sceloporus Lizards In The Laramie Mountains, Wyoming, Kiara W. Milcoff, Wendy A. Estes-Zumpf, Adam D. Leaché Nov 2021

Molecular Identification Of Sceloporus Lizards In The Laramie Mountains, Wyoming, Kiara W. Milcoff, Wendy A. Estes-Zumpf, Adam D. Leaché

Western North American Naturalist

Accurate information on species identities and distributions is critical for informing state land use and conservation policies. However, it can often be difficult to determine species identity using morphological data alone. Using phylogenetic methods, we determined the identity of Sceloporus lizards occupying the Laramie Mountains of Wyoming, between known ranges for Sceloporus tristichus and Sceloporus consobrinus. The ND1 mitochondrial gene was sequenced for 10 individuals from the Laramie Mountains and analyzed using maximum likelihood with 23 other samples of S. tristichus and S. consobrinus from throughout their ranges. The mtDNA gene tree places the Laramie Mountains populations within a …

From Bruckner To Bjorling: A Roundabout Tale, Walter Rudolph

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

The opportunity to introduce Jussi Bjorling to a group of music students at Weber State University (WSU) in Ogden, Utah had a twisted beginning. It was organized by Ralph Vander Heide and his wife Judith. Ralph had learned of a similar event I was doing in Salt Lake City in August 2011. He had asked to be invited and I had readily agreed. But I had no idea who he was, nor how he learned of the event or acquired my email. In the end he had to cancel because of an unavoidable conflict. But we agreed to pursue a …

Why The Bjorling Sound Was Written, Stephen Hastings

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Now that The Bjorling Sound has been published, it is up to others to comment on its contents. And the more commentary there is (whether positive or negative) the happier I will be, for I always intended it to be an open-ended book, requiring an active response from readers, as part of an ongoing collective effort to understand Bjorling the artist. I have done my best to describe as precisely as possible the experience of listening to what I consider to be Jussi's finest recordings, and I naturally hope that the book will prove reasonably interesting even to opera-lovers who …
