Collaborations Of Subject Librarians In Digital Humanities Initiatives On Campus: A Case Of Visualization Of Social Connections And Geographic Movement Of Xie Lansheng, Joan Wang

Journal of East Asian Libraries

Digital humanities have transformed humanistic pedagogy and research by the application of a variety of computer technologies under the umbrella term of “digital.” As an essential campus hub to support the educational and research activities of their parent institutions, academic libraries naturally extend their services to support the digital humanities initiatives on campus with a partnership of faculty and students. However, not many cases and papers have been discovered to report details of subject librarians in the partnership. This paper presents an empirical study of a collaboration of a Chinese Studies Librarian with a faculty member and a Ph.D. student …

Group Psychotherapy For Pain: A Meta-Analysis, Cameron Todd Alldredge Feb 2022

Group Psychotherapy For Pain: A Meta-Analysis, Cameron Todd Alldredge

Theses and Dissertations

Chronic pain is common and frequently interferes with people’s regular functioning and reduces quality of life. Though pharmacological approaches are used most frequently to treat pain-related issues, the side effects of these medications often lead to other problems. Group therapy has been used and studied for decades in treating pain though it’s general efficacy for addressing pain is not clear. Objectives: to determine group therapy’s efficacy for patients with pain-related issues and whether the effects are moderated by study, patient, leader, or group characteristics. Method: potential articles were selected from searches completed in major databases based on a set of …

Ph-Responsive Nanocarriers In Cancer Therapy, Nour M. Alsawaftah, Nahid S. Awad, William G. Pitt, Ghaleb A. Husseini Feb 2022

Ph-Responsive Nanocarriers In Cancer Therapy, Nour M. Alsawaftah, Nahid S. Awad, William G. Pitt, Ghaleb A. Husseini

Faculty Publications

A number of promising nano-sized particles (nanoparticles) have been developed to conquer the limitations of conventional chemotherapy. One of the most promising methods is stimuli-responsive nanoparticles because they enable the safe delivery of the drugs while controlling their release at the tumor sites. Different intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli can be used to trigger drug release such as temperature, redox, ultrasound, magnetic field, and pH. The intracellular pH of solid tumors is maintained below the extracellular pH. Thus, pH-sensitive nanoparticles are highly efficient in delivering drugs to tumors compared to conventional nanoparticles. This review provides a survey of the different strategies …

Thermosensitive Polymers And Thermo-Responsive Liposomal Drug Delivery Systems, Waad H. Abuwatfa, Nahid S. Awad, William G. Pitt, Ghaleb A. Husseini

Faculty Publications

Temperature excursions within a biological milieu can be effectively used to induce drug release from thermosensitive drug-encapsulating nanoparticles. Oncological hyperthermia is of particular interest, as it is proven to synergistically act to arrest tumor growth when combined with optimally-designed smart drug delivery systems (DDSs). Thermoresponsive DDSs aid in making the drugs more bioavailable, enhance the therapeutic index and pharmacokinetic trends, and provide the spatial placement and temporal delivery of the drug into localized anatomical sites. This paper reviews the fundamentals of thermosensitive polymers, with a particular focus on thermoresponsive liposomal-based drug delivery systems.

Recommendations For Infection Control In Congregate Shelters Following A Natural Disaster, Megan Schultz, Blaine Winters Feb 2022

Recommendations For Infection Control In Congregate Shelters Following A Natural Disaster, Megan Schultz, Blaine Winters

Student Works

Infection control is at the forefront of nurses’ minds, particularly following a natural disaster. Natural disasters often displace people from their homes, requiring them to stay in congregate shelters for a short period of time. The risk of infection is significantly increased in shelters environments. The purpose of this literature review is to determine the appropriate strategies to mitigate the spread of infection in congregate shelters following a natural disaster. Implications for practice are identified.

Trophic Relationships In Larval California Newts (Taricha Torosa), Michael P. Marchetti, Kirsti Dunkel, Charlotte Moxley Feb 2022

Trophic Relationships In Larval California Newts (Taricha Torosa), Michael P. Marchetti, Kirsti Dunkel, Charlotte Moxley

Western North American Naturalist

The larval stage of the California newt (Taricha torosa) has been little studied despite the presence and abundance of the species throughout much of California. During the 2017–2018 time period, the diet and life history characteristics of this cohort of stream-dwelling newt larvae were examined, using gut contents and stable isotopes, in order to better understand the ecological niche and trophic relationships of the life stage. Our results suggest that the newt larvae consume Chironomidae as a major part of their diet and that this reliance decreases as the larvae age. Newt larvae also feed more widely and …

The Role Of Latter-Day Saint Resentment In Utah's Culture War, Jessica Dofelmire Feb 2022

The Role Of Latter-Day Saint Resentment In Utah's Culture War, Jessica Dofelmire

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who have continually held majority status in Utah soon after arriving in 1847, dominate the state in terms of culture and politics. In the last few decades, the dominance of the Church and its members has led to contentious disputes regarding issues ranging from property sales to medical marijuana and conversion therapy, but the conflict has existed since the 19th century. The conflict, which is often referred to as Utah’s culture war, has fueled resentful feelings on both sides of the battle and is in turn fueled by the …

God, Me, And Thee: Associations Between Religion, Sexuality, And Marital Connection, Rebecca Walker Clarke Feb 2022

God, Me, And Thee: Associations Between Religion, Sexuality, And Marital Connection, Rebecca Walker Clarke

Theses and Dissertations

There is a well-established and positive association between religiosity and marital satisfaction. What is less clear is the effect of religiosity on marital sexual outcomes, with research findings that have run the gamut from negative to positive. Given that most religions teach that marriage is the divinely appointed context for a sexual relationship, religious persons who are married and in sexual relationships could have a different experience with sex than those who are not in a marital sexual relationship. Although the majority of the population in the United States is religious, sex in religious marriages has received scant research attention. …

The Importance Of Quality Of Life In Weight Loss Programs, Brooke Taylor Feb 2022

The Importance Of Quality Of Life In Weight Loss Programs, Brooke Taylor

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The obesity epidemic has plagued the United States for over 50 years, but there is still much education and research that needs to be done to understand weight loss, specifically the relationship between weight loss and quality of life. This paper considers this relationship from three angles: first, by considering the different types of weight loss treatment, including traditional behavioral weight loss, surgery, acceptance-based programs, and internet weight-loss interventions; second, by considering the impact of weight loss on quality of life through the lens of specific demographics, specifically female, child, and elderly populations; and finally, by considering the impact of …

Material Characterization Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Giovanna Marcella Pope Feb 2022

Material Characterization Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Giovanna Marcella Pope

Theses and Dissertations

Nuclear magnetic resonance techniques can provide highly accurate information about the local environment of both liquid and solid samples. In the first half of this dissertation research, solid state NMR has provided experimental evidence for turbostratic disorder in layered covalent organic solids. Additionally, comparison with candidate structures allowed a proposed correction to the accepted structure of Covalent Organic Framework-5. The second half of the dissertation work emphasized liquid NMR spectroscopy applied to doped iron oxides (IOs). In particular, the effect of IOs on water proton T2 relaxation times were determined as a measure of contrast agent efficacy. Both types of …

Keynote Address: Curating The History Of Covid-19, Jeremy Myntti Feb 2022

Keynote Address: Curating The History Of Covid-19, Jeremy Myntti

Faculty Publications

Many libraries and archives have a mission to document local or regional history and current events. Rapid response collecting during a crisis has become increasingly necessary in recent years in order to curate content during an event rather than after the event has concluded. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, libraries across the world recognized the importance of documenting contemporary history for the current and future study of the pandemic. Many projects were created to document different aspects of the pandemic, each with a slightly different focus based on types of content, populations, or regions. This talk will …

Outvoice: Bringing Transparency To Healthcare, Autumn Clark Feb 2022

Outvoice: Bringing Transparency To Healthcare, Autumn Clark

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Industries are not incentivized to price reasonably and spend responsibly if consumers do not have the ability to shop around within that industry, and shopping around is not possible without pricing transparency (knowing how much a good or service costs before purchasing it). But in the healthcare industry, we typically default to whichever clinic or hospital is closest, with no prior knowledge of what costs we can expect to incur at that particular institution. According to a poll published by Harvard University, nine out of ten Americans feel the healthcare industry is too opaque and greater transparency is needed.

We …

“Truth Is The Only Ground”: How Journalism Contributes To Good Government, Edward L. Carter Feb 2022

“Truth Is The Only Ground”: How Journalism Contributes To Good Government, Edward L. Carter

Faculty Publications

Now, after twenty years of teaching journalism as a college professor and fifteen years of periodically representing journalists as a lawyer, I believe the viability of our system of government at local, state, and national levels depends more than ever on good journalism. But amid rapid and unsettling social and technological change, journalism and government are degenerating. Journalists and public officials need to do better, and I believe informed community members should influence reforms and innovations while insisting on adherence to core values. Doing so will require community members to set aside some selfish interests and ask the same of …

Decline Of The Northern Long-Eared Myotis (Myotis Septentrionalis) In The Eastern Great Plains After The Arrival Of White-Nose Syndrome, Jeremy A. White, Patricia W. Freeman, Madelene I. Shehan, Cliff A. Lemen Feb 2022

Lemen

Western North American Naturalist

The northern long-eared myotis (Myotis septentrionalis) has declined sharply in the eastern United States due to the disease white-nose syndrome (WNS), which is caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd). However, less is known about the species’ status in the central and western parts of its range where WNS has arrived more recently. Here we report the timing of the arrival of Pd and WNS to eastern Nebraska and examine acoustic and capture data of M. septentrionalis to determine the initial impact of the disease on this species. We sampled bats for the presence of Pd …

Flowering By Dioecious Rhamnus Ilicifolia (Rhamnaceae) And Pollen Transport To Female Flowers By Flies And Bees, William D. Wiesenborn Feb 2022

Flowering By Dioecious Rhamnus Ilicifolia (Rhamnaceae) And Pollen Transport To Female Flowers By Flies And Bees, William D. Wiesenborn

Western North American Naturalist

Rhamnus ilicifolia (Rhamnaceae) is a large shrub found in a range of habitats from southern Oregon south to Baja California and east into Arizona. During spring, the plant produces clusters of unisexual flowers, each with a 5–6-mm-diameter, open perianth of green or yellowish-green sepals. I investigated the pollination of R. ilicifolia in western Arizona during 27 April to 21 May 2020 by examining the distribution and phenology of male and female flowers on shrubs, collecting insects from female flowers, and determining the proportions of conspecific pollen on insects to estimate floral constancy. Shrubs were dioecious, and individual male and female …

Effects Of Positive And Negative Emotion On Picture Naming For People With Mild To Moderate Aphasia: A Preliminary Investigation, Tyson G. Harmon, Courtney Nielsen, Corinne Loveridge, Camille Williams Feb 2022

Effects Of Positive And Negative Emotion On Picture Naming For People With Mild To Moderate Aphasia: A Preliminary Investigation, Tyson G. Harmon, Courtney Nielsen, Corinne Loveridge, Camille Williams

Faculty Publications

Purpose: To investigate how emotional arousal and valence affect confrontational naming accuracy and response time in people with mild to moderate aphasia compared with adults without aphasia. We hypothesized that negative and positive emotions would facilitate naming for people with aphasia but lead to slower responses for adults with no aphasia.

Method: Eight participants with mild to moderate aphasia, 15 older adults, and 17 young adults completed a confrontational naming task across three conditions (positive, negative, neutral) in an ABA case series design. Immediately following each naming condition, participants self-reported their perceived arousal and pleasure. Accuracy and response time were …

Swiss Heritage Preserved At New Glarus Museum, Duane H. Freitag Feb 2022

Swiss Heritage Preserved At New Glarus Museum, Duane H. Freitag

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Born of Depression-era nostalgia, the Swiss Historical

Village at New Glarus, Wisconsin, continues to be among the state’s

most well-known ethnic heritage sites.

Its development over many years was accomplished by a mix

of descendants of the colonists from Canton Glarus who founded the

community in 1845, later immigrants from Switzerland, and now non-

Swiss who have moved to New Glarus and have embraced its history.

Today the museum complex consists of 14 buildings focusing on

various aspects of the community’s past. Visitors can tour the buildings

on their own or with a guide who provides additional interpretation.

Glarus And Scranton: Benefits And Costs Of Industrialization, Jürg K. Siegenthaler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

This article is based on my book, Konflikte der

Industrialisierung: Industrie, Raum und Gesellschaft in Glarus und

Scranton 1840-1914, a study which examines and compares the

industrialization process in its path of success as well as the social costs

it entails. The two cases of comparison concern different industries,

but resemble each other regarding region (a valley), the time period,

and the massive environmental transformations during their histories

of industrialization.

The Battle Of Dornach 1499: A Contest Between Two Early Tactical Infantries, Albert Winkler Feb 2022

The Battle Of Dornach 1499: A Contest Between Two Early Tactical Infantries, Albert Winkler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In July of 1499, two well-trained tactical infantries fought

at the Battle of Dornach when the Swiss peasants and Swabian

mercenaries or Landsknechte met in a major engagement for the first

time. The Swiss infantry had been dominating battlefields in many

parts of Europe for decades, but the Battle of Dornach was a close

contest demonstrating that Swiss dominance might be over and a new

age of infantries was soon to begin. While tactical infantries had been

deployed on the field of battle for centuries, this was one of the few

times in the Middle Ages that two of them …
