Dating app facilitated sexual assault (DAppSA) is a concerning phenomenon with minimal published research. This retrospective study explored if DAppSAs were different than other sexual assaults (SAs) committed by acquaintances through a review of 3,413 sexual assault medical forensic examination (SAMFE) charts from 2017 to 2020 in a Mountain West state in the United States. Routine Activities Theory and Confluence Model of sexual aggression provided the theoretical framework for the study. Inclusion criteria for DAppSA cases included (1) victim was 14 years of age or older; (2) victim indicated meeting the perpetrator on a dating app; (3) SA occurred at …
The Impact Of Rubric Training On Students' Self-Efficacy And Self-Regulated Learning, Ying Suet Michelle Lung
The Impact Of Rubric Training On Students' Self-Efficacy And Self-Regulated Learning, Ying Suet Michelle Lung
Theses and Dissertations
ESL writing teachers often deal with a heavy workload of giving feedback to students. Training students to self-assess their work can ease teachers' burdens; one self-assessment method is rubric training (RT), where teachers guide students in reading and grading sample essays. This research explores whether RT leads to positive emotional and regulatory gains. Twenty-one students enrolled in a first-year writing class received incremental exposure to RT. The same set of surveys, Self-efficacy Scale (SES) and Self-regulated Learning Perception Scale (SRLPS), was administered three times to measure the changes in their language self-efficacy (LSE) and self-regulated learning (SRL). The results were …

FARMS Occasional Papers, Volume 4, edited by Jared Ludlow (BYU–Hawaii) and Larry E. Morris, contains articles by three BYU professors and focuses on the polemical use of water and storm language in the Deuteronomic History (Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, and 1 and 2 Kings), justice and mercy in the book of Deuteronomy, and the garment of Joseph.
Exploring The Role Of Divine Providence In History
Exploring The Role Of Divine Providence In History
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Most modern historians view social, economic, and political factors as the sole shaping influences of history. For other scholars, the role of divine providence in history cannot be denied and is a topic worthy of serious consideration. Last year, Latter-day Saint scholars who embrace the notion of “providential history” shared their perspectives at a symposium titled “A Latter-day Saint View of History,” held at Brigham Young University on 6–7 February 2003. Among the 21 presenters at this unique event was John W. Welch, publications director for the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History, editor in chief of BYU …

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In one of the more moving narratives found in the Book of Mormon, a group of Lamanites are miraculously prevented from killing the prophets Nephi and Lehi in a prison. The Lamanites and Nephite dissenters are then redeemed from their own spiritual bondage when they are converted to Christ.

Review Responds To Distortions Of Dna Evidence, Mormon Origins
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The latest issue of the FARMS Review (vol. 15, no. 2, 2003) responds in full measure to two works challenging the historicity of the Book of Mormon and the foundational events of the restored Church of Jesus Christ. The contributing scholars not only expose fatal flaws in the critics’ arguments and methods but also provide background information and perspectives that readers will find instructive. In addition, this issue of the Review evaluates several other recent publications in Mormon studies and includes a Book of Mormon bibliography for 2002.

Theodore Abū Qurrah, translated and introduced by John C. Lamoreaux of Southern Methodist University, includes first-ever English translations of a substantial portion of Theodore Abū Qurrah’s writings, which treat such issues as the characteristics of true religion and the nature of free will. Abū Qurrah (fl. ad 810), the bishop of Haran (in modern-day southern Turkey), was one of the first Christians to write in Arabic and to mount a sustained theological defense of Christianity against Islam. This book is now at press and will be distributed by the University of Chicago Press and made available through the BYU Bookstore.
Atonement And The Temple, John A. Tvedtnes
Atonement And The Temple, John A. Tvedtnes
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In 1988 Hugh W. Nibley noted that the use of terms based on the word atone (atonement, atoning, atoned, etc.), while used in the Old Testament mostly in association with rites performed in the tabernacle of Moses, clearly tied the Nephites to preexilic Israel, that is, prior to the Babylonian captivity of the Jews in 587 bc. He found that most of the occurrences were “in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, where they explicitly describe the original rites of the tabernacle or temple on the Day of Atonement.”

“O Death, Where Is Thy Sting?”, Corbin T. Volluz
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The Book of Mormon has come under frequent fire from its critics for allegedly quoting portions of the New Testament before the New Testament was written. A classic example of this is the famous phrase from 1 Corinthians 15:55, “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” Clear allusions to this passage are made by three Book of Mormon prophets: Abinadi (Mosiah 16:8), Aaron (Alma 22:14), and Mormon (Mormon 7:5).

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The latest issue of the FARMS Review (vol. 17, no. 1) is now available, offering its usual in-depth, incisive commentary on an array of recent publications and topics of interest to Latter-day Saint readers.
This is the first issue published since Hugh Nibley’s death earlier this year, and Louis Midgley’s tribute to this illustrious Latter-day Saint scholar has already proved to be one of the more popular contributions. The essay is essentially an intellectual autobiography in which Midgley (BYU professor emeritus of political science and associate editor of the Review) tells of his first encounter with Nib-ley, in 1949; his …

Nibley Classic On Papyri Given New Life In Second Edition
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
After years of intense effort, the long-overdue second edition of Hugh Nibley’s 1975 book The Message of the Joseph Smith Papyri: An Egyptian Endowment is at press. This new edition has been meticulously pre-pared by BYU Egyptologists John Gee and Michael D. Rhodes, who upgraded this Nibley classic on many points (some unseen, others impossible to miss, such as the superior illustrations by Michael Lyon) while preserving the original con-tent. Published by FARMS and Deseret Book, this edition is a fitting tribute to Nibley’s pioneering work and will enable a new generation of students and scholars to profit from Nibley’s …

Modified Transient Hot-Wire Needle Probe For Experimentally Measuring Thermal Conductivity Of Molten Salts, Brian N. Merritt
Modified Transient Hot-Wire Needle Probe For Experimentally Measuring Thermal Conductivity Of Molten Salts, Brian N. Merritt
Theses and Dissertations
Molten salts are high-temperature heat transfer fluids intended for cooling and/or storage purposes in a variety of energy applications. The current work seeks to ultimately study the thermophysical properties of fluoride and chloride salts, which are commonly considered for use in advanced nuclear reactors. Thermophysical properties like thermal conductivity are fundamental to ensuring safe, efficient, and competitive designs for advanced commercial nuclear reactors. Measurement challenges with liquid salts such as electrical conduction, corrosion, convection, and thermal radiation have hindered traditional approaches in their attempts to accurately quantify these properties at high temperatures. Here, a needle probe is developed, which modifies …

Mindfulness In University Students: A Tool For Managing Stress, Lyndsey Kunzler
Mindfulness In University Students: A Tool For Managing Stress, Lyndsey Kunzler
Family Perspectives
Mindfulness can be a meaningful practice across different stages of life: it can help improve well-being for young children (Becker & Whitaker, 2018; Esmaeilian et al., 2018; Li et al., 2019), adolescents (Leavitt et al., 2020; Oppo et al., 2019), and adults (Berk et al., 2018; Pierson et al., 2019). Mindfulness is the act of clearing the mind, being present, and paying attention with the intent to improve well-being (Greeson et al., 2014). Mindfulness began as a common Buddhist practice, but in the 1970s Jon Kabat-Zinn created mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in an attempt to aid mental health issues (Greeson …
Effects Of Parents’ Avoidant And Anxious Attachment On Children, Nicole Busacker
Effects Of Parents’ Avoidant And Anxious Attachment On Children, Nicole Busacker
Family Perspectives
Avoidant and anxious attachment styles are both negative ways of dealing with the need for connection or bonding. One reason these attachment styles develop is in “the absence of a secure bond with an available and responsive ‘other,’ rigid, repetitive internal and interpersonal coping patterns or attachment strategies develop” (Brubacher, 2017, p. 52–53). These coping patterns are made manifest in either avoidant or anxious attachment behaviors and are mainly expressed in relation to spouses and children.

Long-Term Persistence Of Desert Rodent Species In A Great Basin Sagebrush Community: Potential Effects Of Fire, Invasive Annuals, And Warming Temperatures, Lindsay A. Dimitri, William S. Longland
Long-Term Persistence Of Desert Rodent Species In A Great Basin Sagebrush Community: Potential Effects Of Fire, Invasive Annuals, And Warming Temperatures, Lindsay A. Dimitri, William S. Longland
Western North American Naturalist
To test long-term stability of a desert rodent community and potential impacts of wildfire on the community’s stability, we live-trapped desert rodents from 2019 to 2021 at a site in western Nevada where we had previously trapped from 1989 to 1993. Trapping occurred in unburned sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) and in adjacent burned habitat where sagebrush cover was removed by a fire in 1985. We also used online data to test for trends in estimated cover of annual and perennial vegetation and in ambient temperatures and precipitation over the >30-year period spanned by the trapping data. White-tailed antelope squirrels …
