Zalapa, Sergio Guerrero-Vázquez, Cornelio Sánchez-Hernández, Juan B. Morales-Malacara, Gabriela Castaño-Meneses, José L. Navarrete-Heredia, David Ávila-Figueroa, Francisco Javier Padilla-Ramírez

Western North American Naturalist

Lesions of the pinnae of captive bats are common, but there are few reports for free-living bats. In those reports, causal agents of the lesions were attributed to mites, fungus, or a combination of factors, but specific information regarding pinna lesions is generally lacking. This is the first report in Mexico of pinna lesions, associated mites, and histopathological findings for 2 species of free-living bats: the Jamaican fruit-eating bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) and the Honduran yellow-shouldered bat (Sturnira hondurensis).

Mindful Musicians: Trait Mindfulness, Deliberate Practice, Anxiety And Depression In College Musicians, Sally S. Wynn Nov 2022

Mindful Musicians: Trait Mindfulness, Deliberate Practice, Anxiety And Depression In College Musicians, Sally S. Wynn

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Background. Mindfulness is understood as a capacity to cultivate moment-to-moment awareness with a sense of nonjudgement, curiosity, and kindness. Anxiety and depression are prevalent in the undergraduate musician population, despite positive effects on mental health that are often associated with listening to music. This study explored factors of music practice including instrument category, practice time, and the use of deliberate practice techniques. Our objective was to test the relationships between dispositional mindfulness, musicianship, and mental health among college instrumental musicians. I hypothesized first, that dispositional mindfulness would be positively associated with musicianship; second, that mindfulness would be negatively associated with …

Evaluating Multi-Agent Modeller Representations, Jonathan Demke Nov 2022

Evaluating Multi-Agent Modeller Representations, Jonathan Demke

Theses and Dissertations

The way a multi-agent modeller represents an agent not only affects its ability to reason about agents but also the interpretability of its representation space as well as its efficacy on future downstream tasks. We utilize and repurpose metrics from the field of representation learning to specifically analyze and compare multi-agent modellers that build real-valued vector representations of the agents they model. By generating two datasets and analyzing the representations of multiple LSTM- or transformer-based modellers with various embedding sizes, we demonstrate that representation metrics provide a more complete and nuanced picture of a modeller's representation space than an analysis …

Modeling Of High-Pressure Entrained-Flow Char Oxidation, Daniel Gundersen Nov 2022

Modeling Of High-Pressure Entrained-Flow Char Oxidation, Daniel Gundersen

Theses and Dissertations

Coal plays a significant role in electricity production worldwide and will into the foreseeable future. Technologies that improve efficiency and lower emissions are becoming more popular. High pressure reactors and oxyfuel combustion can offer these benefits. Designing new reactors effectively requires accurate single particle modeling. This work models a high-pressure, high-temperature, high-heating rate, entrained-flow, char oxidation data set to generate kinetic parameters. Different modeling methods were explored and a sensitivity analysis on char burnout was performed by varying parameters such as total pressure, O2 partial pressure, O2 and CO2 mole fractions, gas temperature, diameter, and pre-exponential factor. Pressure effects on …

Records For Hippoboscidae, Streblidae, And Nycteribiidae (Insecta: Diptera) From Colorado And Wyoming, Will K. Reeves Nov 2022

Records For Hippoboscidae, Streblidae, And Nycteribiidae (Insecta: Diptera) From Colorado And Wyoming, Will K. Reeves

Western North American Naturalist

The Hippoboscoidea are ectoparasitic flies that feed on the blood of birds and mammals with various degrees of host specificity. These flies are often poorly represented in museum collections and are overlooked in surveys of ectoparasites. These flies play a role in the transmission of a wide range of pathogens and endoparasites and are irritating to their hosts. I present records for 10 species of Hippoboscidae, 1 of Nycteribiidae, and 1 of Streblidae from Colorado and Wyoming based on museum records, some of which appear to be novel for these states.

Moral Foundations In Bunkerville And Malheur, David Keith Frey Nov 2022

Moral Foundations In Bunkerville And Malheur, David Keith Frey

Theses and Dissertations

The events of the Bunkerville standoff and the Malheur wildlife refuge occupation were both important confrontations with the government by the western land rights movement. Participants in and responders to the events engage in distinct moral judgments and rationales. Utilizing cultural schema analysis and moral foundations theory (MFT), I explored the differences in rationales and judgments made by participants and responders in their explicit, public moral discourses of both events. My analysis indicates that responders and participants defined and utilized the same moral foundations, but in distinct ways. Participants were more diverse in their invocation of moral foundations while responders …

Landscape Genetics Of The Camas Pocket Gopher (Thomomys Bulbivorus), An Endemic Mammal Of Oregon’S Willamette Valley, Luke E. Painter, Matthew J. Weldy, Rachel S. Crowhurst, Leslie N. Carraway, Clinton W. Epps Nov 2022

Landscape Genetics Of The Camas Pocket Gopher (Thomomys Bulbivorus), An Endemic Mammal Of Oregon’S Willamette Valley, Luke E. Painter, Matthew J. Weldy, Rachel S. Crowhurst, Leslie N. Carraway, Clinton W. Epps

Western North American Naturalist

Animal species living in small populations with small ranges may be particularly vulnerable to habitat loss and fragmentation. We investigated genetic population structure of the camas pocket gopher (Thomomys bulbivorus), a species endemic to the Willamette Valley, Oregon, an area strongly affected by human development. Pocket gophers collected across much of the range of the species were analyzed for genetic structure, diversity, and influences of landscape on gene flow using microsatellite markers identified in closely related gopher species. We used k-means clustering to group individuals into genetically similar clusters based on their locations along principal component axes, and …

Gekko is an optimization suite in Python that solves optimization problems involving mixed-integer, nonlinear, and differential equations. The purpose of this study is to integrate common Machine Learning (ML) algorithms such as Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural network (ANN) models into Gekko to solve data based optimization problems. Uncertainty quantification (UQ) is used alongside ML for better decision making. These methods include ensemble methods, model-specific methods, conformal predictions, and the delta method. An optimization problem involving nuclear waste vitrification is presented to demonstrate the benefit of ML in this field. ML models are compared …

Revitalizing The Russian Of A Heritage Speaker, Aaron Jordan Nov 2022

Revitalizing The Russian Of A Heritage Speaker, Aaron Jordan

Theses and Dissertations

This study presents a linguistic profile of a heritage speaker of Russian and recounts the efforts to revitalize his Russian after he had nearly stopped speaking it. The study was conducted over the course of almost two years, starting when the subject was twelve years old and ending when he was fourteen. Although this study found that the subject displayed many of the linguistic features typical of heritage speakers, the subject's Russian had suffered less attrition than is common for heritage speakers of Russian in the United States. This study presents its linguistic findings under the rubrics of phonology, morphosyntax, …

Looking Forward To 25 More Years Of Farms

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

This is an excerpt from a dinner speech that FARMS founder John W. Welch gave to members of the FARMS Development Council on 19 March 2004.

An evening like this, which begins our commemoration of the 25th anniversary of FARMS, makes me think back to our founding days in 1979. Keeping alive the memory of foundation stories, of creation accounts, is part of keeping on track for the future.

Lectures On Christianity In The Middle East

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In March the Institute cosponsored a lecture series at Brigham Young University titled “Christianity in the Middle East.” The series provided a historical overview of the eastward spread of Christianity into the pagan Near East, a subject largely neglected in religious and socio-cultural studies. Over many centuries, Christian groups maintained a presence in the region, leaving behind a notable literary, monumental, and artistic legacy that is increasingly being recognized as an important part of the world’s cultural heritage.

Patrick Henry, Gideon, And The Book Of Mormon

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Historian Richard L. Bush-man, responding to accusations that the Book of Mormon contains “evidence of nineteenth-century American political culture,” concluded that in fact “most of the principles tradition-ally associated with the American Constitution are slighted or disregarded altogether” in the book. “So many of the powerful intellectual influences operating on Joseph Smith failed to touch the Book of Mormon.”

‘Binding Of Isaac’ Focus Of Farms Conference, Lecture

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Genesis 22 records that God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac upon an altar but intervened at the last moment, providing instead a ram for the actual sacrifice and greatly blessing Abraham for passing what has come to be viewed as the ultimate test of obedience to God’s will. The account, simple enough in outline, is nevertheless seen by different religious traditions as profoundly symbolic and even enigmatic, its moral and religious implications having spawned numerous interpretations.

Latest Occasional Papers Treats Old Testament Themes

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In “Who Controls the Water? Yahweh vs. Baal,” the lead article in Occasional Papers 4, Fred E. Woods presents a fascinating discussion of the polemical usage of water and storm language in the Deuteronomic History (the books of Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings). As Woods notes, the most active deity at the Canaanite city of Ugarit (located in present-day Syria near the Mediterranean coast) is Baal, the god of water and storm. The strong denunciation of Baal in the Old Testament indicates that the Baal cult had deeply penetrated Israelite culture. And while scholars have long been aware of …

Of Punctuation And Parentage, Grant Hardy

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

As is well known, when the words of the Book of Mormon were translated “by the gift and power of God,” there was no punctuation at all in the early manuscripts, and that is the way the translated text was delivered to E. B. Grandin’s print shop. Type-setter John Gilbert reported that when he sat down to prepare the text for publication, “every chapter . . . was one solid paragraph, without a punctuation mark, from beginning to end.”¹ So he added punctuation and paragraphing as he went along. He did a good job, especially for someone reading the book …

Circadian Misalignment And Childhood Obesity: An Unexplored Target For Intervention And Treatment, Mason Pilling

Student Works

Childhood obesity is a pandemic affecting almost 40 million individuals aged 5-18 globally. Many current interventions are relatively successful at treating childhood obesity, yet the rate of childhood obesity continues to increase from year to year, and current intervention methods are struggling to keep up. Mounting evidence suggests that sleep may be a crucial mechanism for understanding and treating obesity, yet sleep still remains a relatively unexplored target for intervention. Circadian misalignment, a measure of the difference between the body’s preferred sleep timing and actual bed and wake times, has been almost completely ignored in the literature, despite preliminary findings …
