An Ecological Survey Of The Vegetation Of The Dinosaur National Monument, Utah, Stanley L. Welsh Jan 1957

An Ecological Survey Of The Vegetation Of The Dinosaur National Monument, Utah, Stanley L. Welsh

Theses and Dissertations

The present work is a general survey of the vegetation of the Utah portion of the Dinosaur National Monument with special emphasis on some of the ecological aspects of the area. The vegetation ranges from xerophytic plant communities of the lower elevations to mesophytic communities of the higher elevations. Hydrophytic plant communities are also present to a limited extent along the Green River and where seeps or springs arise. Soils vary from fine clay to coarse gravel. The dividing lines between formations is often marked by extreme differences in soil type. During the author's first collecting trip into the Monument …

Utah Mail Service Before The Coming Of The Railroad, 1869, Ralph L. Mcbride Jan 1957

Utah Mail Service Before The Coming Of The Railroad, 1869, Ralph L. Mcbride

Theses and Dissertations

After making a study of the pre-railroad Utah mail service, I have found it appropriate to categorize certain broad elements. This thesis is divided into eight parts, each part following in chronological order except for the one dealing with the Pony Express and the telegraph. Which covers approximately the same period of time as the chapter entitled "Resumption of the Mail." Though there was a most definite overlapping of time for these two historical phases, it would seem that there was adequate justification for making two chapters.
The initial chapter in this thesis pertains to the unofficial mail, beginning in …

Music History Of The Salt Lake Theatre, The Formative Years: 1862-1870, Alfred S. Morris

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to bring to light as much of the music as possible, all the performers that could be recorded, and sufficient audience reaction to indicate the musical preferences of the area in order to provide an accurate, detailed account of the early years in the Salt Lake Theatre, 1862 - 1870. There was also the desire to present these things in such a way that they would be reliable, factual, complete, and still, if possible, interesting. An attempt was made to capture the spirit of the times, to make the characters "live," to transport the …

A Study Of The Speaking Of B. H. Roberts, Utah's Blacksmith Orator, R. Wayne Pace Jan 1957

A Study Of The Speaking Of B. H. Roberts, Utah's Blacksmith Orator, R. Wayne Pace

Theses and Dissertations

The Mormon Church has continued to grow in size and prominence since 1830 when Joseph Smith announced the formation of this new Christian organization.

The struggle to gain recognition for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) among the body of Christian groups has been a vigorous and energetic one. Out of the band of closely knit followers have developed leaders who were particularly gifted at proclaiming and defending the beliefs of this faith.

One of the men who was foremost in advancing the views of the Mormon people during the years 1880 to 1930 was Brigham Henry …

An Early History Of Milford Up To Its Incorporation As A Town, George A. Horton Jr. Jan 1957

An Early History Of Milford Up To Its Incorporation As A Town, George A. Horton Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The first known party of white men who entered the area that became Utah included a Franciscan Friar, Silvestre Velez de Escalante. This expedition passed through the Milford Valley in the fall of 1776 and it was when they were camped at San Brigida, near or on the present site of Milford, that the important decision to turn back to Sante Fe was made.

Near the hot springs which are 15 or 20 miles farther south, Escalante recorded that the territory of the bearded Indians they had first encountered at the Sevier River extended to that point. It is not …

George Edward Percy Careless: His Contributions To The Musical Culture Of Utah And The Significance Of His Life And Works, Howard Hoggan Putnam

Theses and Dissertations

Through study of the conditions of the past one is often able to appreciate the present a great deal more. Particularly does this seem true when one looks into the early musical activities in our State of Utah. Most people are aware of the great amount of musical activities existing at the present time in Utah, but many fail to stop and realize the background of work and effort applied to bring these musical experiences before the public. Many fail to realize the pioneering work done by individuals to advance music to its present degree of performance. Names such as …

Introgression In Purshia Tridentata (Pursh) Dc. And Cowania Stansburiana Torr, Lindsey Kay Thomas Jan 1957

Introgression In Purshia Tridentata (Pursh) Dc. And Cowania Stansburiana Torr, Lindsey Kay Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

A study ot discordant variation in populations of Purshia tridentata, Purshia glandulosa, and Cowania Stansburiana has disclosed that introgressive hybridization can be expected whenever these species come in contact with each other. The introgression is not only of one pure species into that of another, but is also of introgressed populations into other introgressed populations and of pure populations into introgressed populations. Evidence was found showing that in all probability Purshia glandulosa is a stabilized segregant derived from introgressed populations. Evidence was also found and presented to show that introgression is responsible for the recent acquisition of stalked hypanthium glands …

Thermal Reaction Of Hydrogen And Oxygen In Small Bore Tubes, Shib Charan Chattoraj Jan 1957

Thermal Reaction Of Hydrogen And Oxygen In Small Bore Tubes, Shib Charan Chattoraj

Theses and Dissertations

The thermal reaction of hydrogen and oxygen has been investigated from the standpoint of the important intermediate hydrogen peroxide in the region between 620-720 degrees centigrade in small bore Pyrex and steel tubes. The minimum explosion-temperatures with different flow rates and compositions of the mixture have been determined. They have been found to vary with the composition and flow rate of the mixture. The minimum explosion temperature is also found to vary with the condition of the reaction tube surface. The yield of hydrogen peroxide has been determined as a function of temperature, contact time, composition of feed stream, and …

Oxidation Of Molybdenite With The Aid Of Microorganisms, Ralph Anderson Aug 1956

Oxidation Of Molybdenite With The Aid Of Microorganisms, Ralph Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This work represents a study on the biological oxidation of molybdenite, MoS2. The principal objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of the biological oxidation of molybdenite, to determine the physical and chemical conditions under which the oxidative process occurs, and to develop a strain of bacteria or alter the activity of the microorganisms by acclimatization to increase their activity on sulfide minerals, in particular molybdenite. Minerals used in this study were pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), molybdenite concentrate, and molybdenite ore. The microorganisms used in this investigation were autotrophic bacteria obtained from the leaching streams of Bingham Canyon, …

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Taxonomy And The Geographical Distribution Of The Chrysopidae (Neuroptera) Of Utah, Wayne A. Melander Aug 1956

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Taxonomy And The Geographical Distribution Of The Chrysopidae (Neuroptera) Of Utah, Wayne A. Melander

Theses and Dissertations

The writer undertook a preliminary investigation of the taxonomy and geographic distribution of a group of neuropterous insects, the Chrysopidae, in Utah. The main purposes of the investigation were to find what species and forms of these beneficial insects occur in Utah, to provide means for their identification, and to report upon their geographical distribution. Two main methods of investigation were employed. The first, a bibliographic method, was to carefully review the literature concerning the Chrysopidae of the United States for all references pertaining to their distribution and their taxonomy. The second method of investigation was to study insect specimens …

The Instability Constant Of The Cobaltous Citrate Complex Ion Using Cobalt-⁶⁰ As A Tracer, Lee T. Cox Aug 1956

The Instability Constant Of The Cobaltous Citrate Complex Ion Using Cobalt-⁶⁰ As A Tracer, Lee T. Cox

Theses and Dissertations

The instability constant of a substance shows the tendency of a substance to dissociate into simple ions. The stability of the substance can be related to stabilities of other substances through the instability constant. Schubert gives a method for the determination of the instability constant which involves measurements of the adsorption of a radiotracer cation on a cation exchange resin. Two different types of resin were employed in this research. It was found that with a resin containing carboxylic acid exchange groups the adsorption of the cobaltous ion changed rapidly with pH but with a resin containing nuclear sulfonic acid …
