The Cytochrome Composition Of Bacillus Subtilis And Bacillus Megaterium, John Harvey Mangum
The Cytochrome Composition Of Bacillus Subtilis And Bacillus Megaterium, John Harvey Mangum
Theses and Dissertations
A spectroscopic and enzymatic investigation of the cytochromes of B. megaterium and B. subtilis was conducted. Attempts were made to isolate and characterize the individual cytochromes as well as to determine the locale of such activities as cytochrome c oxidase, DPNH oxidase, succinic dehydrogenase, cytochrome c reductase and diaphorse. Only two methods proved effective in liberating the cytochromes; disruption of the cells with sonic osillations and grinding tlhe cells with alumina. These procedures caused a fragmentation of the cell membrane. It was found that the entire cytochrome complement of these two bacteria was bound intimately to particles which most likely …

Bionomics Of Culex Tarsalis Coquillett In Utah County, Stanley K. Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents information concerning the bionomics of Culex tarsalis Coquillett in Utah County. Observations indicate that rock piles and talus slides are typical hibernation sites. The spring emergence from hibernation occurred between 28 March and 7 April 1959. Larvae breed in a great variety of habitats, including street-gutters, animal tracks, marshes and waste water from irrigation systems. The peak population density for both larvae and adults occurred during the first week in August. Charts, graphs, drawings and photographs are used in the presentation of data.

An Evaluation Of Public Relations Contacts With High School Seniors Made By A Representative Of Brigham Young University, Dale L. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
This study was an attempt to determine to what extent personal contacts, as a part of student recruitment, acquainted high school seniors of 1958 with Brigham Young University and influenced them in their enrollment. Opinions of college freshmen who were graduated from high schools visited by a B.Y.U. public relations representative were elicited by mail questionnaire. Respondents were asked to list the means through which they became "acquainted" with the University. They were also asked to list what "influenced" them to attend. Personal contacts by a public relations representative were considered among various means of "acquaintance" and "influence" of a …

An Investigation Of Metallic Rhenium, Rhenium Dioxide And Rhenium Chlorides As Catalysts In The Hydrogenation Of Certain Organic Substrates, Walter William Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the various analytical methods to ascertain the suitability of the methods for our use in determining the amount of rhenium used in our catalysts, and, if necessary devise a new method. Also, several catalysts were to be prepared and used in hydrogenation or organic compounds. Evaluation of the catalytic activity of each catalyst was to be made by using them with various selected organic substrates.

An Investigation Of Complex Species In Silver Chloride Solutions I. Solubility Measurements ; Ii. Ion Exchange Methods, Harry G. Hecht
Theses and Dissertations
The complex species in silver chloride solutions have been investigated by solubility measurements and by ion exchange methods in this work. The solubility of silver chloride in solutions of varying chloride ion concentrations was determined by radioassay techniques. The method of least squares was used to evaluate the constants for the formation of the aqueous silver chloride and the dichloro-complex species; the values being 1.99 x 103 and 2.98 x 104, respectively, at 25.00°C. Aqueous solver chloride has been shown to be sorbed by Amberlite IR-120 from silver chloride solutions which have an ionic strength of 0.2. This sorption has …

Charles Darwin After One Hundred Years, Vasco M. Tanner
BYU Studies
One hundred years after the publication of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species, Darwin's theories have become largely accepted as scientific fact explaining the changing nature of the world. However, there remains a fear of the theory of evolution. The article surveys the history of Darwin's voyages and observations that led to his revolutionizing theories and the impact his thought has had on science.

An Approach To Modernity In Art, Gerrit De-Jong Jr.
An Approach To Modernity In Art, Gerrit De-Jong Jr.
BYU Studies
Writing to defend modern art, the author first discusses some of the prejudiced and false assumptions made by people when they hear the word modern in connection with artistic expression. Every artistic age, whether in regard to painting or music, dance or literature, interior design or architecture, has been modern to those who experienced it, and even today's classics were often met with skepticism in their time. Accustomed to established norms, audiences and consumers of art are not certain how to respond to new conventions set forth in modern artistic works. Looking at the beauty of form rather than the …

God And Immortality In Dostoevsky's Thought, Louis C. Midgley
God And Immortality In Dostoevsky's Thought, Louis C. Midgley
BYU Studies
The concepts of God and immortality are woven through Dostoevsky's works. They are both necessary to give meaning to life. Although ultimately a pessimist, Dostoevsky finds hope in the Russian God. The author pulls evidence for his argument from The Brothers Karamazov, Notes from the Underground, The Diary of a Writer, The Possessed, The Idiot, and Dostoevsky's short stories and letters.
