Allied Strategy In World War Ii: The Churchill Era, 1942-1943, De Lamar Jensen Nov 1962

Allied Strategy In World War Ii: The Churchill Era, 1942-1943, De Lamar Jensen

BYU Studies

This article closely studies the predominantly British military strategy of the Allied forces in 1942 and 1943. It examines the characteristics of, the reasons behind, and the consequences of these strategies, as well as the reasons why the policies changed in the latter part of 1943. Shortly after the attack at Pearl Harbor, Churchill met with the Americans to determine how to proceed. Although the Americans favored a direct invasion of German-occupied Europe, and the Russians desired a second European front, Churchill and the British wanted to focus on Italy and the Mediterranean as a means to find Europe's "soft …

The Spectrum Of Faith In Victorian Literature, Bruce B. Clark Oct 1962

The Spectrum Of Faith In Victorian Literature, Bruce B. Clark

BYU Studies

Typical of the schismatic nature of its time, Victorian literature holds all four fundamental religious positions mankind can take: liberalism, fundamentalism, humanism, and existentialism. Robert Browning's work serves as an example of optimistic and affirmative liberalism. Christina Rossetti represents the pessimism toward life and the ultimately hope for the next life of fundamentalism. Mathew Arnold's work illustrates the opposite, humanist point of view, which displays optimism for the present but has no belief in an afterlife. Finally, James Thompson displays the negativity of existentialist thought, seeing little hope in the present and future.

The Pardoner As Huckster: A Dissent From Kittredge, Alexander Evanoff Oct 1962

The Pardoner As Huckster: A Dissent From Kittredge, Alexander Evanoff

BYU Studies

George Lyman Kittredge's reading of the Pardoner from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales has been little challenged. The author asserts that Kittredge perhaps misinterpreted the Pardoner's character by trying to dignify him. Instead, in the author's view, the Pardoner is an unrepentant and hypocritical scoundrel.

Background To The Theory Of Arabic Origins, M. Carl Gibson Oct 1962

Background To The Theory Of Arabic Origins, M. Carl Gibson

BYU Studies

In the late eighteenth century, Xavier Lampillas asserted that fourteenth-century Italian poets were influenced by the Spanish Arabic poetic style through the Provençal poets. Lampillas was not the first person to make this assertion, but his argument came at a time when the relative merit of Italian and Spanish was widely debated. Although his ideas were eventually discarded due to a lack of evidence, scholars are now revisiting this theory and are slowly beginning to substantiate it.

The Reflections Of Brigham Young On The Nature Of Man And The State, J. Keith Melville Oct 1962

The Reflections Of Brigham Young On The Nature Of Man And The State, J. Keith Melville

BYU Studies

This article examines Brigham Young's views on free agency, natural rights and slavery, and revolution in man's relationship to the government. Brigham Young (1801-1877) was the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He saw a human lifetime as but a small piece of one's eternal existence. He said that man is more inclined to do good than to do evil. He believed that man is sovereign over his own actions, yet did not rule out the omnipotence of God. Man has the power to choose evil, which will lead to condemnation in the world to …

A New Emphasis For The American Dream, Weldon J. Taylor Oct 1962

A New Emphasis For The American Dream, Weldon J. Taylor

BYU Studies

The American ideals of hard work, thrift, and perseverance are rooted in mankind's desire to meet his basic physical needs. Since in today's society these needs are not as pressing, the basic American values have begun to lose their motivating power. Today, the desire to be a creative and valued member of an organization should become a bigger motivator than the simple drive for wealth. Some whose comments have contributed to the idea of this new motivation include O. A. Ohmann, A. A. Stambaugh, Abraham T. Collier, and Stanley F. Teele.

“Snake”: A Moment Of Consciousness, Robert O. Dalton Oct 1962

“Snake”: A Moment Of Consciousness, Robert O. Dalton

BYU Studies

If a reader judged D. H. Lawrence's "Snake" based solely on its form, the poem could easily be disregarded. However, Lawrence's intense effort to capture a moment of enlightenment and the reader's emotional involvement in the poem overcome Lawrence's supposed inattention to form and show that there is much to be appreciated in "Snake."
