The Challenge And Responsibility Of The L.D.S. Teacher, Bruce B. Clark Jan 1965

The Challenge And Responsibility Of The L.D.S. Teacher, Bruce B. Clark

BYU Studies

This article, adapted from an address to graduates from Brigham Young University in English, details the challenges particular to teachers who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The author lists seven attitudes teachers should avoid and lists qualities teachers should strive to develop. These include teaching and caring about the individual, fostering in students an excitement for learning, and working hard. In addition to these qualities, Latter-day Saint teachers as well need to live with integrity and show, through their actions and examples, that religion is not diametrically opposed to philosophy, literature, and science.

A Study To Determine What Caused Students To Discontinue Attending The Burley Seminary Before Obtaining A Fourth-Year Certificate 1961-1965, Charles Durrell Salisbury

Theses and Dissertations

It was the writer's purpose to determine the reason students discontinued seminary before obtaining a fourth-year certificate from the Burley L. D. S. Seminary between the years 1961-1965. In addition to this, means of helping to solve the problems of the students who discontinued seminary were sought. Questionnaires were sent to 92 students who had discontinued seminary; a questionnaire was also given to 61 students who were still in seminary. The results of these questionnaires were tabulated by the Brigham Young University Data Processing Service. Of the 92 students who discontinued seminary and received questionnaires, 66 (70 per cent) were …

The Wasatch Front In 1869: A Geographical Description, Rodney Dale Griffin Jan 1965

The Wasatch Front In 1869: A Geographical Description, Rodney Dale Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The year 1869 was chosen for the study of the Wasatch Front because it is a datum point; something to work from. Following the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, the typically Mormon society at the Wasatch Front oasis began to be more rapidly integrated to the cultural and economic influences from the East. A geographic study of this area in 1869 focuses attention on the nature of the Mormon civilization and more fully illuminates the effect of …

As of January 1, 1965 the Pacific Board of Education, which directed the Church schools in the Pacific Islands, was also incorporated into the aforementioned mother unit. Equation Of State Of Nacl And Its Use As A Pressure Gauge In High-Pressure Research, Daniel L. Decker Jan 1965

Equation Of State Of Nacl And Its Use As A Pressure Gauge In High-Pressure Research, Daniel L. Decker

Faculty Publications

The pressure as a function of lattice parameter and temperature has been calculated for NaCl over a pressure range of 0 to 500 kbar for temperatures between 0degrees and 1500degrees C. The calculation used the Mie-Gruneisen equation of state with Born-Mayer type repulsion terms between first and second nearest neighbors. The Gruneisen constant was expanded about its value at room temperature and atmospheric pressure; the first coefficient in the expansion being evaluated by forcing the calculated thermal expansion at atmospheric pressure to fit the experimental results of Enck. The two empirical parameters in the repulsion terms were evaluated using the …

Polymorphism And High Pressure, H. Tracy Hall

BYU Studies

Polymorphs are crystalline substances composed of the same element but with different atomic configurations and thus very different physical properties. Dr. H. Tracy Hall, the first scientist to successfully produce diamonds from graphite, explains how pressure and heat can be applied, either individually or combined, to a substance to produce a new polymorphous substance. This process has resulted in the commercial diamond business and may in the future yield other profitable and beneficial industries and products.

Early Mormon Troubles In Mexico, Karl Young Oct 1964

Early Mormon Troubles In Mexico, Karl Young

BYU Studies

The Mormon colonizers who settled in Chihuahua, Mexico, faced hardships similar to those faced by others settling the frontier. Sickness, hunger, poverty, and natural disasters, combined with the threat of attacks from the native Indians, made life for these Latter-day Saints difficult. The author tells the stories of these Saints as they tried to make a home for themselves in Mexico during the time period 1885 to 1900.

Carlyle And Ruskin: An Influential Friendship, Charles H. Kegel Oct 1964

Carlyle And Ruskin: An Influential Friendship, Charles H. Kegel

BYU Studies

Although Thomas Carlyle and John Ruskin were very different from one another, the two men shared a long and influential relationship that greatly influenced the work of Ruskin. What began as a friendship eventually became one of a master and a disciple, even that of a father and a son. Ruskin himself admits the deep influence Carlyle had on his writing and thinking and even asserted that where his writing extended beyond Carlyle, he was merely acting as a disciple trying to make his master's teachings a practical reality. Without this relationship, it is likely that Ruskin would have been …

Mysteries Of The Kingdom: More Or Less, William L. Knecht Oct 1964

Mysteries Of The Kingdom: More Or Less, William L. Knecht

BYU Studies

Fawn M. Brodie, critic of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and of its founder Joseph Smith, has suggested that one of Mormonism's unique doctrines, baptism for the dead, originated not from divine revelation, but from the Dunkers, or Brethren, of Pennsylvania. A group led by Conrad Bessial known as the Ephrata Community broke off from the main body of the Brethren. This group's doctrines and practices differed from the main body of the Brethren, and for some years they practiced baptisms in behalf of their deceased loved ones. Knecht asserts that since the practice was limited and …
