Significance Of The Late Pleistocene Fauna From The Little Box Elder Cave, Wyoming, To Studies Of Zoogeography Of Recent Mammals, Charles A. Long
Significance Of The Late Pleistocene Fauna From The Little Box Elder Cave, Wyoming, To Studies Of Zoogeography Of Recent Mammals, Charles A. Long
Great Basin Naturalist
A late Pleistocene mammalian fauna from Little Box Elder Cave, eastern Wyoming, provides paleontological evidence bearing on several contemporary and related studies in zoogeography of Recent intermontane mammals and on understanding of rapidly changing environments in the Rockies in late Pleistocene and post-Pleistocene time. Both paleontological and zoogeographical findings suggest that during glacial periods in the Pleistocene the life-zones were lowered and, therefore, many boreal mammals ranged away from the glaciated Rocky Mountain chain. Since then, some of these returned or retreated northward as the climate moderated, and many warmth-adapted mammals approached the Rockies. The fossil and Recent faunas analyzed …
A Survey Of Nesting Hawks, Eagles, Falcons, And Owls In Curlew Valley, Utah, Joseph B. Platt
A Survey Of Nesting Hawks, Eagles, Falcons, And Owls In Curlew Valley, Utah, Joseph B. Platt
Great Basin Naturalist
During the summer of 1969 a survey involving 45 nesting nocturnal and diurnal birds of prey was made. Prey items, nest site selections, and productivity for great horned, long-eared, burrowing and short-eared owls, golden eagle, prairie falcon, kestrel, harrier and ferruginous, red-tailed and Swainson's hawks were determined. The turkey vulture, accipiter hawks, barn and screech owls were also recorded. The total raptor impact on the environment was determined to be slight, whereas the limits placed on the nesting species are considered substantial. It was noted that immature eagles were in the valley and, because they did not require a nest …

The Myology Of Sceloporus C. Clarki Baird And Girard (Reptilia: Iguanidae), Diane Marie Secoy
The Myology Of Sceloporus C. Clarki Baird And Girard (Reptilia: Iguanidae), Diane Marie Secoy
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
Examination of the complete musculature of Sceloporus clarki clarki Baird and Girard and seven other species of Sceloporus revealed variation among species of Sceloporus and between Sceloporus and other iguanid lizards. The muscles in which the greatest variation was found were the intermandibularis group, the constrictor colli, the episterno-cleido-mastoideus, the episternohyoideus, the coracoid head of the triceps, the costocoracoid and the flexor tibialis externus. This study indicates: (1) Sceloporus is more closely allied to Crotaphytus than to the ground-dwelling iguanines; (2) the possibility of the basal stock of Sceloporus being arboreal, and (3) Sceloporus is a genus in the process …

An Analysis Of Cattle Grazing On Steep Slopes, William Wayne Patton
An Analysis Of Cattle Grazing On Steep Slopes, William Wayne Patton
Theses and Dissertations
A field study was made to correlate cattle grazing patterns of steep terrain with the rest-rotation grazing system. Line-plot transects were positioned across each of three heavily grazed, steep canyons. The rest-rotation system as practiced on the Gooding Cattle Allotment is resulting in good forage use as the animals are grazing forage on slopes up to 60%. Level contour trails extending across slope faces made it possible for cattle to graze on steep slopes at distances up to 80 chains from water. Contour trails originate at watering loctions; hence better distribution of water could be expected to result in better …

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Studies :|Bi. Several Charge Transfer Systems ; Ii. A Metallic System ; Iii. A Liquid Crystal, Dee Edward Oyler
Theses and Dissertations
Solid-liquid phase equilibria studies were used to investigate possible compound formation in solutions of (i) N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and (ii) N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) with a series of halogenated hydrocarbons that were selected to give a wide range of acceptor properties. Solid 1:1 intermolecular compounds were identified from solutions of (i) DMF and (ii) DMA with CCl_4, CBrCl_3, and C_6H_5CCl_3. The intermolecular compounds (DMF)_2•CCl_4 and (DMF)_2•CBrCl_3 were also found. The results suggest charge transfer from DMF or DMA to the chlorine atoms of the acceptor molecule as the process for compound formation. Thermal methods were used to determine with high precision the solid-liquid …
The Physiological Vitality Of Scarlet Globemallow, Sphaeralcea Grossulariaefolia (Hook. And Arn.) Rydberg, Under Drought, Sam Finley Brewster
The Physiological Vitality Of Scarlet Globemallow, Sphaeralcea Grossulariaefolia (Hook. And Arn.) Rydberg, Under Drought, Sam Finley Brewster
Theses and Dissertations
Responses to drought were studied on greenhouse grown plants of Sphaeralcea grossulariaefolia (Hook. & Arn.) Rydberg. A pressure bomb was modified to measure leaf water potential (ψ). Leaf water potentials varied from -2 to -80 bars. Matric potential proved negligible. Low osmotic potentials indicated that turgor pressure remained positive. Photosynthesis decreased linearily with leaf water potential decreases. At about -32 bars ψ net photosynthesis became zero and around -45 bars ψ all photosynthesis ceased. Dark respiration decreased below about -18 bars proportionally to leaf water potential decrease until becoming minute at -60 bars. A very rapid rise in CO2 equilibrium …
A Calorimetric Study Of Metal Ion Cyclic Polyether Interaction :|Bi. Cation Binding Properties Of Macrocyclic Polyethers In Aqueous Solution As A Function Of Temperature ; Ii. Effect Of Solvent Dielectric Constant On The Binding Properties Of Cyclic Polyethers For Na[Superscript +] And K[Superscript +], Dennis Pershing Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
The complexation properties of the two isomers of the cyclic polyether dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 are examined in aqueous solution for a series of metal ions at various reaction temperatures. The results are discussed in terms of size relationships and salvation characteristics of both polyether and metal ions. ΔCp° values are determined from the temperature dependence of the ΔH° values. A discussion of the errors involved in the determination of ΔH° from the temperature dependence of log K values is also included. Comparisons are made between the results of this study and those of a similar study by H. K. Frensdorff, E. I. …
The Roles Of Chlorine Azide In Chemical Lasers, Walter Wood Rice
The Roles Of Chlorine Azide In Chemical Lasers, Walter Wood Rice
Theses and Dissertations
ClN_3 was photolyzed in various gas mixtures to transform its chemical energy into laser radiation. Reaction mechanisms, energy distribution in reaction products, and relative reaction rates were deduced from the laser emission. Flash photolysis of ClN_3-H_2 mixtures produced HCl laser emission; however, due to a narrow range of operating conditions and many competing reactions, the laser output was less than that obtained from comparable Cl_2-H_2 mixtures. The rate constants for H + ClN_3 —> HCl* (v=n) + N_3 were determined to be 0.45 ± 0.05 of the corresponding rate constants for H + Cl_2 —> HCl* (v=n) + Cl. Chlorine …

The Altitudinal Distribution Of Mammals Of The La Sal Mountains, Utah, Stephen Robert Bradley
Theses and Dissertations
This study deals with the distribution of the mammals of the La Sal Mountains, Grand and San Juan Counties, Utah. The distribution of the mammals has been correlated with the distribution of the vegetation zones of the mountains which varies with the elevation. The study points out which of the various mammals are found in the various vegetational communities and how the distribution varies from community to community.
The Hyobranchium And Throat Myology Of The Ambystomidae Of The United States, John E. Krogh
The Hyobranchium And Throat Myology Of The Ambystomidae Of The United States, John E. Krogh
Theses and Dissertations
The 16 species and subspecies of the Ambystomidae of the United States are placed into six groups according to their throat morphology as follows: The Dicamptodon group, the Rhyacotriton group, the A. annulatum-A. cingulatum group, the A. gracile-A. jeffersonianum-A. mabeei-A. macrodactylum-A. maculatum group, the A. talpoideum group, the A. opacum-A. texanum group, and the A. rosaceum-A. t. tigrinum-A. t. melanostictum-A. t. nebulosum group. Dicamptodon appears to be the most primitive group and Rhyacotriton the most specialized. Based on the morphology of the throat region it is suggested that A. rosaceum be placed in the tiger salamander group as a subspecies …
Eutrophication Of Small Lakes, Lynn T. Kenison
Eutrophication Of Small Lakes, Lynn T. Kenison
Theses and Dissertations
An estimate was made to determine the amount of nitrate and phosphate entering Utah Lake in 1968. To make this estimate, the flow data for 1968 and the nitrate and phosphate concentrations for 1970 were used. This was done because of the lack of information. The results show that the total nitrate added to Utah Lake in 1968 was 7,638,000 pounds. The total phosphate added was 1,740,200 pounds. Of this amount, 12,4 per cent of the nitrate and 18.0 per cent of the phosphate was released from the lake through the Jordan River. The rest remained in the lake to …

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Of The Potassium-Rubidium And Rubidium-Cesium Alloy Systems, Elisabeth M. Delawarde
Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Of The Potassium-Rubidium And Rubidium-Cesium Alloy Systems, Elisabeth M. Delawarde
Theses and Dissertations
Thermal methods of high precision were used to determine the solid-liquid phase equilibria diagrams for the potassium-rubidium and the rubidium-cesium systems. Both form minima in the liquidus curves occurring at 307.00° K with 0.667 mole fraction rubidium in the potassium-rubidium system and 282.85° K with 0.530 mole fraction cesium in the rubidium-cesium system. In the potassium-rubidium system, the liquidus and solidus points are very close together, giving a very narrow temperature range for the two phase region. The freezing point minimum in the potassium-rubidium system occurs at 0.667 mole fraction rubidium, suggesting the possible formation of a KRb2 intermetallic compound.
Bacterial Receptor Sites For Uptake Of Transforming Dna, Douglas Pierre Bingham
Bacterial Receptor Sites For Uptake Of Transforming Dna, Douglas Pierre Bingham
Theses and Dissertations
Bacterial transformation is defined as a mechanism of genetic exchange whereby a population of bacteria can obtain genetic informa-tion as a result of cellular uptake and integration of extracellular deoxyribonucleic acid released from other bacteria by natural or in-duced lysis. In order for a transformable strain of bacteria to take up DNA and to undergo transformation, the cells must be in a physiolog-ical state called competence. A cell is referred to as competent if it has the ability to bind extracellular DNA irreversibly and subsequently to integrate and express the DNA.
A Computer Simulation Of A Partial Venous System Of A Human Lower Extremity, David C. Smith
A Computer Simulation Of A Partial Venous System Of A Human Lower Extremity, David C. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The human body is truly a fascinating and complex creation of our Maker. Because of the complexity and variability, many of its workings were little known until recent years. Some of the more amazing facts of the circulatory system follow. If the individual blood vessels of a single adult, i.e., artery, arteriole capillary, venule and vein, were laid end to end, they would extend more than 60,000 miles. For the average adult, the heart beats 70 times per minute; for the well-conditioned athlete, 50-60 beats per minute; and for the extraordinary athlete, as few as 37 times per minute. The …
