Great Basin Naturalist

Astragalus iselyi and A. stocksii are described as new species. The former is from the La Sal Mountains of Grand and San Juan counties in eastern Utah, and the latter is from the Henry Mountains in eastern Garfield County, Utah. Yucca toftiae is described as new from materials collected along Glen Canyon in San Juan and Kane counties, Utah. Studies of plant collections taken from previously unexplored or little-known regions of Utah have demonstrated the presence of taxa not included in the known descriptions of plant species of the state. Two species of Astragalus and one of Yucca are included …

Notes On The Spotted Bat (Euderma Maculatum) From Southwest Utah, Richard M. Poché, Geoffrey L. Bailie Dec 1974

Notes On The Spotted Bat (Euderma Maculatum) From Southwest Utah, Richard M. Poché, Geoffrey L. Bailie

Great Basin Naturalist

In May 1974 four male spotted bats were netted near St. George, Utah. Contrary to published speculation on Euderma, indications are that the spotted bat in southwest Utah (1) is not a late flyer, (2) does not feed solely on moths, (3) may drop to the ground on occasion to forage, (4) is not a rapid flyer, and (5) appears to utilize crevices as roosting sites.

Dominance Relationships Of The Dark Kangaroo Mouse (Microdipodops Megacephalus) And The Little Pocket Mouse (Perognathus Longimembris) In Captivity, Andrew R. Blaustein, Arthur C. Risser Jr. Dec 1974

Dominance Relationships Of The Dark Kangaroo Mouse (Microdipodops Megacephalus) And The Little Pocket Mouse (Perognathus Longimembris) In Captivity, Andrew R. Blaustein, Arthur C. Risser Jr.

Great Basin Naturalist

Interspecific interactions between the little pocket mouse (Perognathus longimembris) and the dark kangaroo mouse (Microdipodops megacephalus) were tested in the laboratory. P. longimembris was statistically dominant over M. megacephalus. The dominant-subordinate relationships shown by our laboratory results indicate that interspecific aggression may be one mechanism involved in keeping these sympatric species ecologically separated.

Cinemicrography Of Selected Parasites Of Fishes And Of Free-Living Stages Of Haemonchus Contortus, Stephen Homer Hilton

Theses and Dissertations

Two 16 mm color films were made to help fill a general need for instructional motion pictures in the area of Parasitology. One film "Haemonchus contortus, a Sheep Stomach Worm," deals with a nematode parasite of sheep, showing all stages of its external development and including a time-lapse sequence of the embryonation of the egg. The other film, "Some Parasites of Freshwater Fishes," shows six parasites; Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Cotylurus erraticus, Dactylogyrus sp., Lernaea cyprinacea, Trichodina sp., and Diplostomum spathaceum for the first time in motion pictures. The films were photographed through a Wild dissecting scope and a Reichert Universal Camera …

Activity Of A Dipodomys Ordii Population Using Recapture Methods, James R. Garcia Nov 1974

Activity Of A Dipodomys Ordii Population Using Recapture Methods, James R. Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

Activity curves for Dipodomys ordii were developed from data obtained from a study utilizing an electrically monitored trapping grid. The curves for non-perturbated populations showed an initial post-dusk peak, followed by increasing activity and a large pre-dawn peak; but after ten dominant animals had been removed, the largest activity peak was post-dusk. Differences in activity patterns were not found among sex, age or reproductive classes. Rising ambient temperatures, falling barometric pressures, winds over 3.2 km/hr and the absence of the moon depressed capture numbers; while increasing humidity (relative and absolute), decreasing soil temperatures at 20 and 40 cm below ground …

The Effects Of Highway Construction On The Fish Populations In The Weber River Near Henefer, Summit County, Utah, Edward James Peters Nov 1974

The Effects Of Highway Construction On The Fish Populations In The Weber River Near Henefer, Summit County, Utah, Edward James Peters

Theses and Dissertations

Alterations of streams to facilitate highway construction and consumptive water use has become a fisheries management problem. To evaluate the effects of channeling concomitant to construction of Interstate 80 N. near Henefer, Utah, altered and unaltered sections of the Weber River were compared on the basis of fishes censused, population estimates and ordinations. Species compositions in particular areas were influenced by local rheologic conditions. Changes in species composition between samplings at a particular area were caused by fish movements. Data from altered sections, rehabilitated with deflectors and checkdams, were not noticeably different than data from unaltered areas. However, fish movements …

Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, E. H. Bovay Nov 1974

Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, E. H. Bovay

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In August, 1923, the then Governor of the Gold Coast (Ghana), Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, paid a visit to Switzerland. Although proud to welcome such a high dignitary, especially one with such a Bernese sounding name, the Swiss authorities were somewhat embarassed when the Governor asked to be taken to the birthplace of his ancestors. Nobody knew for certain, since the Bernese municipalities of Belp, Guggisberg, Niedermuhlern, Schwarzenburg and Zimmerwalk all claimed him as one of their sons. The origins of the Governor have been traced recently. Frederick Gordon Guggisberg's grandfather Johann (John), born in 1808 and a citizen of Belp …

Book Review: Chabag: Schweizer Kolonie Am Schwarzen Meer, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The founding of hoogeneous, ethnically defined settlements represents perhaps the most colorful aspect of migration history. The colony Chabag, located in Bessarabia where the Dnjester river flows into the Black Sea, provides a find example of such a story, traced by H. Gander-Wolf as a labor of love. The settlement, founded in 1822 by the botanist and vine-grower Louis Vincent Tardent from Vevey in French-speaking Switzerland, lasted for five generations until the turbulence of World War Two forced the inhabitants to return to their homeland. Although this study is written by a descendant of the settlers, it is remarkably free …

Carl Bodmer: A Biographical Sketch, Hans Läng Nov 1974

Carl Bodmer: A Biographical Sketch, Hans Läng

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Almost every illustrated work on North American Indians has pictures by Carl Bodmer, the gifted Swiss painter. Experts as well as interested laymen are impressed by his excellent portrayals of various types of Indians and their world. When we look for the artist's signature, however, we often find nothing but "after Wied" under the picture or else the name of an engraver. Thieme-Becker, Benezit, Nagel, and any number of other editors of the various encyclopedias of artists, refer to Carl Brun (Schwizerisches Kunstler-Lexikon, Frauenfeld 1905), whenever they mention Bodmer. And here, too, we find precious little information about the painter.

Book Review: Amicable Agreement Versus Majority Rule: Conflict Resolution In Switzerland, Frank Tachau Nov 1974

Book Review: Amicable Agreement Versus Majority Rule: Conflict Resolution In Switzerland, Frank Tachau

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Writing a review of a book about Swiss politics for Swiss-American readers is not an easy task for a non-Swiss political scientist. Unfortunately, the Swiss political system has simply not been a very popular subject for investigation by American political scientists. Since Switzerland is the oldest and perhaps most successful multi-ethnic political system in Europe, if not the world, this lack of attention and popularity is very regrettable indeed, The appearance in English translation of this book by Jurg Steiner of the University of North Carolina (with teaching affiliations at the Universities of Zurich and Geneva as well) does a …
