Computerized Reduction Of Meteorologic Measurements From Irrigated And Nonirrigated Plots In Central Utah, Ferron L. Andersen, Paul R. Roper Jun 1975

Computerized Reduction Of Meteorologic Measurements From Irrigated And Nonirrigated Plots In Central Utah, Ferron L. Andersen, Paul R. Roper

Great Basin Naturalist

Two FORTRAN IV computer programs were developed to facilitate reduction of meteorologic data from irrigated and nonirrigated plots at Provo, Utah. The first program compiles and tabulates daily, monthly, and yearly summaries of precipitation as rain and/or snow, snowfall, total snow cover, soil moisture, dew, relative humidity, potential evaporation, cloud cover, and wind. Temperature values are tabulated for measurements taken in a standard weather shelter. 5 cm beneath soil surface under grass cover, at soil surface under grass cover, and on bare ground.

The second program enables complete computerized (Calcomp) construction, labeling, and graphing of 10 different meteorologic measurements and …

A Revision Of The Phacelia Crenulatae Group (Hydrophyllaceae) For North America, N Duane Atwood Jun 1975

A Revision Of The Phacelia Crenulatae Group (Hydrophyllaceae) For North America, N Duane Atwood

Great Basin Naturalist

This taxonomic monograph of the Phacelia crenulatae group for North America recognizes 35 species and 7 varieties. A brief discussion of the history, general morphology, phylogeny, and cytology is given. All entities are separated by a comprehensive key followed by a list of types, synonyms, descriptions and general habitat. Distribution maps and illustrations are included. One variety is described as new. The body of this work is based on herbarium specimens and extensive field observations and collections made throughout much of North America.

Evolutionary Divergence In Closely Related Populations Of Mimulus Guttatus (Scrophulariaceae), Karen W. Hughes, Robert K. Vickery Jr. Jun 1975

Evolutionary Divergence In Closely Related Populations Of Mimulus Guttatus (Scrophulariaceae), Karen W. Hughes, Robert K. Vickery Jr.

Great Basin Naturalist

The evolutionary divergence of five closely related populations of the yellow monkey flower. Mimulus guttatus was compared with the length of time the populations could have occupied the site and with the ability of the populations to intercross. Populations from the younger sites were found to be morphologically intermediate to populations from the older sites. Ability to intercross was not correlated with morphological divergence at this stage of evolution.

Rodent Populations, Biomass, And Community Relationships In Artemisia Tridentata, Rush Valley, Utah, D. W. Nichols, H. D. Smith, M. F. Baker Jun 1975

Rodent Populations, Biomass, And Community Relationships In Artemisia Tridentata, Rush Valley, Utah, D. W. Nichols, H. D. Smith, M. F. Baker

Great Basin Naturalist

Three desert Artemisia tridentata communities in Rush Valley, Utah, were trapped for small rodents during the summer of 1970, and population densities were estimated for each population category using Lincoln's index. Animals were weighed and rodent biomass calculated by species throughout the summer. Population, biomass, and other data were then analyzed to gain an understanding of the community relationships of the three study areas to each other as well as to the A. tridentata community types of the Great Basin.

Peromyscus maniculatus, Eutamias minimus, and Reithrodontomys megalotis were common to area 1, whereas P. maniculatus, E. minimus, and Perognathus parvus …

History Of The Swiss American Historical Society, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

5. The Last Ten Years*

The Washington meeting of October 5, 1963, was an encouraging sign of interest in the usefulness of the Swiss American Historical Society on the part of the official representative of Switzerland in this country. It did not solve any of the immediate problems, however. The society was without leadership and its activities had ceased a number of years ago. Thanks to the initiative displayed by the embassy, however, thigs were put in motion again. For one, Emil Schaefer, who had so unexpectedly been saddled with presidential responsibility again, actively looked for a person willing to …

A. In Search of Ancestors: Where to Begin

We all of us harbor a particular interest in ourselves that just naturally extends to curiosity about our forebears. This inquisitiveness, when combined with the proper research procedures, can culminate in a rewarding and stimulating study: Genealogical Research.

New York Regional Meeting, Dr. Rolf Kieser

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The New York chapter of the SAHS held a panel discussion on "Contemporary Switzerland in the Eyes of Young Swiss-Americans" on May 3, 1975, at the Swiss Town House. Seven panelists, all relatively recent immigrants from Switzerland, addressed themselves to written questions given them by the organizer and moderator of the meeting Dr. Rolf Kieser, First Vice President of the SAHS.

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

It looked for while as if I would not have enough materials for a mid-year newsletter. However, after some worrying I received enough contributions to make up an issue, even though it is somewhat shorter than most recent ones. The individuals items are self-explanatory and need no introduction.

Raptor Temperature Regulation And Energetics, James Arthur Mosher May 1975

Raptor Temperature Regulation And Energetics, James Arthur Mosher

Theses and Dissertations

A review of energetics studies of raptorial species introduces four separate studies of temperature regulation by raptors. Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) nest site selection, as influenced by direction of exposure, is discussed. The data show strong directional preferences to the NNW by southern populations and SSE by northern populations. The tarsometatarsus is shown to have a thermoregulatory function in large falcons, and adaptations of this mechanism to varied habitats are examined. Color phase in Screech Owls (Otus asio) is shown to be related to metabolic differences that may explain the distributions of the color morphs. Development of thermoregulation in Flammulated …

Close Coupling Test Of Classical And Semiclassical Cross Sections For Rotationally Inelastic Ar-N2 Collisions, Russell T. Pack Apr 1975

Close Coupling Test Of Classical And Semiclassical Cross Sections For Rotationally Inelastic Ar-N2 Collisions, Russell T. Pack

Faculty Publications

Accurate quantum mechanical close coupling (CC) integral cross sections are reported for rotationally inelastic Ar-N2 collisions at room temperature using an empirical intermolecular potential. These cross sections are used to test the infinite order sudden (IOS) approximation and the results of several methods [classical trajectories (CT), full sudden (SA), generalized phase shift (GPS), and classical limit generalized phase shift (CGPS)] as reported in the preceding paper by Pattengill. The IOS approximation works very well for cross sections involving low rotational states. The CT method works well for all the cross sections examined, justifying the popular belief that the rotational motion …
