Biography Of J. J. Von Grueningen, John Paul Von Grueningen

My father, Johann Jakob von Grueningen, who for thirty-four years served as pastor of the Reformed Church at Sauk City, Wisconsin, was born in Gstaad, Saanen Parish, Canton Bern, Switzerland, November 23, 1845, and died at Sauk City, May 23, 1911. From the time of his college days at St. Chrischona he used the older spelling of his family name. In explaining the variant spellings of the name, he writes in his memoirs:

Introductory Remarks, Heinz K. Meier Feb 1978

Introductory Remarks, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This, the first nurrber of the fourteenth volume of the SAHS Newsletter, contains only two parts, the report of our 1977 annual meeting in Philadelphia and a biographical account of the life of J. J. von Grueningen, a 19th century Swiss immigrant to Wisconsin, by his son John Paul von Grueningen who was an active member and officer of the SAHS during its Madison years (1940s). I find this biographical sketch not only lively and colorful but moving at times and full of descriptive insights into the hardships of 19th century immigration.

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas Jan 1978

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas

Theses and Dissertations

Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." These definitions also tend to be statements of value, …

“…Of Countries And Of Kingdoms”, Jeffrey R. Holland Jan 1978

“…Of Countries And Of Kingdoms”, Jeffrey R. Holland

BYU Studies

Jeffrey R. Holland, at that time the commissioner of education for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gave a luncheon address in connection with a Brigham Young University comparative religion symposium. The symposium was entitled “Deity, Ways of Worship, and Death” and was sponsored by the BYU Religious Studies Center in 1977. In this address, Holland emphasizes that Mormons should embrace light and truth no matter where it may come from. One example he focuses on is the Eastern tradition of meditation; there are numerous scriptural examples of prophets pondering and meditating before they received important revelations. He …

Sailing “The Old Ship Zion”: The Life Of George D. Watt, Ronald G. Watt Jan 1978

Sailing “The Old Ship Zion”: The Life Of George D. Watt, Ronald G. Watt

BYU Studies

George D. Watt was a prominent figure in nineteenth-century Utah, but because he apostatized from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he is now an obscure individual in Mormon history. Watt was baptized in England in 1837, and five years later, he and his wife arrived in Nauvoo. After returning to England to serve a mission, he arrived in Utah in 1851. His knowledge of shorthand was valuable for recording speeches from Church leaders, which were published in the Deseret News and Journal of Discourses, and was also useful for helping develop the Deseret Alphabet. He later …

The Founding Of The Samoan Mission, R. Lanier Britsch Jan 1978

The Founding Of The Samoan Mission, R. Lanier Britsch

BYU Studies

The establishment of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Samoan Islands has an interesting and unusual history. Two Mormon missionaries, Kimo Belio and Samuela Manoa, were sent to Samoa from Hawaii and arrived there in 1863. They baptized about fifty people, but the Church struggled, in part because the Samoan Mission was not officially sanctioned by leaders in Salt Lake City. In 1887, Elder Joseph H. Dean sailed to Samoa to revive missionary work. He faced many obstacles, such as tribal warfare and a rumor that it was illegal to join the Mamona (Mormon) Church, but …

The Dufour Effect. Ii. Experimental Confirmation Of The Onsager Heat-Mass Reciprocal Relation For A Binary Liquid Mixture, Richard L. Rowley, Frederick H. Horne

Faculty Publications

Although experimental verification of Onsager's reciprocal relations has been achieved in a variety of cases, no quantitative test of the heat-mass reciprocal relation for a binary liquid system has previously been reported. We present in this communication experimental proof of the equality of the mass-heat reciprocal relation for the system carbon tetrachloride - cyclohezane.

Some Thoughts On Acculturation, Otto G. Hoiberg Jan 1978

Some Thoughts On Acculturation, Otto G. Hoiberg

The Bridge

Three years ago an important work entitled Flight to America - The Social Background of 300,000 Danish Emigrants was published by Kristian Hvidt(1), Head Librarian of the Danish Parliamentary Library in Copenhagen. Dr. Hvidt's painstaking demographic study of 58 handwritten volumes of data ralating to America-bound Danish emigrants between 1868 and 1914, together with computer analysis, revealed a wealth of interesting information relating to the age, sex, family status, occupation, motivation and other characteristics of the people concerned.
