Cornelius Jensen: One Of California's First Danes, Harlan Pedersen

The Bridge

Sixty miles east of Los Angeles, along the Santa Ana River near the community of Robidoux, lies the little Flabob Airport. Because of its difficult approach, it's a challenge to pilots in training and a good place to land for Sunday lunch, particularly on a clear winter's day with the snow-capped San Bernardinos off to the north. One-half mile off the departing end of the Flabob runway, one views a familiar Southern California sight; the inevitable encroachment of more housing tracts. As one of those pilots in training on a bright Sunday morning, I found my curosity aroused when my …

Niels Sorensen Lawdahl: Autobiography, Niels Sorensen Lawdahl

The Bridge

My name is Niels Sorensen Lawdahl. I was born in Sonder Stenderup, Bjert Strand near Kolding. This vicinity was my mother's native soil. Her name was Ane Sofie Hansen Stougaard. Father was from Givskud vicinity near Vejle. His name was Soren Nielsen. I was born January 25, 1864 (the war year). And before very long, I was baptized because of father's impending departure for the army. There was a little brother in the home, two years older than I. He died in Kasson, Minnesota in 1899.

A. P. Andersen - Saga Of A Danish Immigrant, Henry Jorgensen

The Bridge

Pastor Ove Nielsen, retired assistant director of Lutheran World Relief, provided the initiative for this biography when he wrote to the author and suggested that research be done and a biography be written for The Bridge on Anders Peder Andersen. Andersen, a Danish immigrant and farmer in Montana, was knighted by the King of his native land at which time attention was called to his many accomplishments.

The Jens Nyholm Papers, William K. Beatty Jan 1985

The Jens Nyholm Papers, William K. Beatty

The Bridge

The Chicago area has benefited from the careers of two Danes who had the same first name but completely different occupations: the one indoors and the other out . Both men were alike in having achieved national reputations in their chosen fields. Jens Nyholm served for 24 years as a university librarian; Jens Jensen devoted many years to working with nature in the designing of private and public landscapes in the Midwest. Northwestern University has enjoyed, and still enjoys, the fruits of the labors of both these men for it was at this institution that Nyholm devoted over two decades …

The Plow, The Cow And The Pastor, Karl Marg Jan 1985

The Plow, The Cow And The Pastor, Karl Marg

The Bridge

That was not so bad, and then, Dagmar was even a queen. I have done that which is worse. I once stole, on a late winter night in Chicago, a pioneer cow with all accessories from Christian Bay. Then I sold the stolen goods to a newspaper in Denmark and got c. 60 kroner out of it. How my conscience has fared since then I will not here relate. I am a Danish Lutheran and I do not confess in a catholic confession booth, and much less would I confess in the modern protestant manner, publicly to Mrs. Somebody in …

The Doctrine Of The Rule Of Law In The Twentieth Century, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 1985

The Doctrine Of The Rule Of Law In The Twentieth Century, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The concept of rule of law has been recognized repeatedly in twentieth century political and philosophical discussion, but with a constantly shifting meaning. In this paper we document most of the serious contributions to thought about rule of law before 1985 as a background to further work on the topic.

Interpreting Plato's Euthyphro And Meno, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 1985

Interpreting Plato's Euthyphro And Meno, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Plato's decision to use heuristic drama (in the tradition of Aeschylus and Sophocles) as a vehicle for his philosophical teachings forces the serious reader to make a careful examination of the literary elements of the dialogues. Plato's basic reason for using this literary form is to provide guidance for the interpretation of the content. As Kitto has observed, "In a great work of art, whether a play, a picture, or a piece of music, the connexion between the form and the content is so vital that the two may be said to be ultimately identical." It is therefore counterproductive to …

Water Pricing And Rent Seeking In California Agricultre, B. Delworth Gardner Jan 1985

Water Pricing And Rent Seeking In California Agricultre, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Publications

Without irrigation water, agriculture in California would be little more than limited livestock grazing and some dryland farming of cereal crops. With irrigation water, California produces over 200 crops and is the leading agricultural state with nearly $4 billion in sales in 1980. The state's gross cash receipts from farm sales have consistently approached 10 percent of the U.S. total every year since 1960.

The Property Rights Paradigm And The Protection Of Oak In California, B. Delworth Gardner Jan 1985

The Property Rights Paradigm And The Protection Of Oak In California, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Publications

Once again our country is caught on the horns of a serious dilemma. Natural resources, such as land and water, are becoming increasingly scarce and therefore valuable. Concomitantly, and perhaps more importantly, these resources are recognized as having attributes or characteristics in the form of amenities that are coveted by non owners of these resources. A cheap and effective way of acquiring these amenities is to assert that the legal owners of the resources do not have the right to exclude those who want the amenities from consuming them. Or, almost equivalently, the resources must be used in certain ways …

Quantum Electrodynamics Based On Self-Energy: Lamb Shift And Spontaneous Emission Without Field Quantization, A. O. Barut, Jean F. Van Huele Jan 1985

Quantum Electrodynamics Based On Self-Energy: Lamb Shift And Spontaneous Emission Without Field Quantization, A. O. Barut, Jean F. Van Huele

Faculty Publications

The theory of radiative processes in quantum theory is formulated on the basis of self-energy, in analogy to classical radiation theory, and is explicitly carried out for the calculation of the Lamb shift and spontaneous emission.

Incremental Repetition Within J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth: Shadow, Light, And Silmaril Within Mortal-Immortal Marriages, Nancy Lynn Hayes Dec 1984

Incremental Repetition Within J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth: Shadow, Light, And Silmaril Within Mortal-Immortal Marriages, Nancy Lynn Hayes

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the use of incremental repetition to emphasize points of both syntactic and thematic importance within the Middle-earth works of J.R.R. Tolkien. By studying three specific terms: shadow, light, and Silmaril, and how their meaning changes with each occurance, it is possible to see how much Tolkien's mythology owes to his syntactic structure.

Through my research, I have concluded that not only was Tolkien's use of incremental repetition deliberate, but that it was also an essential part of his skill in creating his mythology.

Application Of Combined Jointed Media And Discrete Slip Plane Characteristics To Subsidence Predictions, David W. Basinger Dec 1984

Application Of Combined Jointed Media And Discrete Slip Plane Characteristics To Subsidence Predictions, David W. Basinger

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an application of a numerical formulation incorporating the effects of joints, cracks, and fractures to a soil subsidence predictions problem, and the extension of that formulation to combined discrete slip planes and jointed media continua formulations. The results obtained are compared to each other and to a physical centrifuge simulation performed previously on the same problem.

In a high valley of the Jura Mountains, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchatel, is the center of watchmaking. It is the city where I was born, 19 May 1911. My passion for travel, geography, history, railroads, maps, is inherited. Among the family papers on my father's side I found a little yellow book titled "Expenses during the travel in Italy" and dated 1799. It contains the schedule of the stagecoaches between cities in Italy and among the expenses are purchases of one map of the Cisalpine Republic, another map and the History of Rome by the Latin historian Polybius. My …

Iv. Maurice E. Perret's Les Colonies Tessinoises: A Summary View, H. F. Raup

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Recently a major contribution to the field of knowledge of California's diverse population was published in Switzerland by Dr. Maurice-Edmond Perret, with the title Les Colonies Tessinoises en Californie.1 Unlike most studies of a similar nature, Perret had access to source materials in the Swiss archives as well as to those in California libraries.2 But he went further: he conducted his study by means of actual field investigation both in Switzerland and in California, and it is this which gives his work particular interest to historical geographers.

Habitat And Distribution Of Pygmy Rabbits (Sylvilagus Idahoensis) In Oregon, Nondor T. Weiss, B. J. Verts Oct 1984

Habitat And Distribution Of Pygmy Rabbits (Sylvilagus Idahoensis) In Oregon, Nondor T. Weiss, B. J. Verts

Great Basin Naturalist

An investigation to determine the location and extent of populations of pygmy rabbits (Sylvilagus idahoensis) in Oregon, and to describe several biotic and physical components within communities that include pygmy rabbits, was conducted from October 1981 to September 1983. Of 211 sites suspected of supporting the species based on interpretation of museum records, aerial photographs, soil maps, and interviews with biologists and area residents, 51 exhibited evidence of being inhabited when examined in summer 1982. Soil and vegetation components were sampled at 15 sites occupied by pygmy rabbits and 21 sites adjacent thereto. At inhabited sites, mean soil …

Late Summer Changes In Mule Deer Diets With Increasing Use On Bitterbrush Rangeland, D. D. Austin, P. J. Urness, J. King Oct 1984

Late Summer Changes In Mule Deer Diets With Increasing Use On Bitterbrush Rangeland, D. D. Austin, P. J. Urness, J. King

Great Basin Naturalist

Late summer diet composition of mule deer was determined daily within a mountain browse enclosure dominated by antelope bitterbrush. Palatable forages of low abundance were rapidly depleted, and bitterbrush continually composed over 50% of the diet, even at utilization exceeding 350 deer-days/ha. The relationship of bitterbrush forage production and deer-days use is discussed.

Insect Damage, Cone Dimensions, And Seed Production In Crown Levels Of Ponderosa Pine, J. M. Schmid, J. C. Mitchell, K. D. Carlin, M. R. Wagner Oct 1984

Insect Damage, Cone Dimensions, And Seed Production In Crown Levels Of Ponderosa Pine, J. M. Schmid, J. C. Mitchell, K. D. Carlin, M. R. Wagner

Great Basin Naturalist

Insect damage to second-year cones was generally not significantly different between crown levels, but was significantly different among areas and among trees within areas for Conophthorus, Megastigmus, and Cydia. Both cone length and width were not significantly different between lower and middle crown, but cone length was significantly greater in the upper crown. Seeds per cone ranged from 34 to 66, but the percent of sound seed per cone varied significantly according to the amount of insect damage.

Producer-Consumer Biomass In Montane Forests On The Arizona Mogollon Plateau, Warren P. Clary, Peter F. Ffolliott, Frederic R. Larson Oct 1984

Producer-Consumer Biomass In Montane Forests On The Arizona Mogollon Plateau, Warren P. Clary, Peter F. Ffolliott, Frederic R. Larson

Great Basin Naturalist

A substantially complete compilation of producer-consumer biomass was achieved for two montane forest reference stands on the Arizona Mogollon Plateau. This compilation, containing published and previously unpublished data, shows these ponderosa-pine-dominated stands to be near the lower end of the biomass range of commercial forest types. The two stands averaged approximately 75 metric tons/ha of plant biomass. Consumers made up less than 0.01 percent of the forest biomass. About 9/10 of the measured consumer biomass consisted of domestic and native ruminants.

Birds Of The Desert Region Of Uintah County, Utah, A. Gaylon Cook Oct 1984

Birds Of The Desert Region Of Uintah County, Utah, A. Gaylon Cook

Great Basin Naturalist

The Common Loon, White Pelican, Double-crested Cormorant, recurvirostrids, and most grebes, waterfowl, gulls, and terns have become more abundant in Uintah County, Utah, since 1937 (Twomey 1942) due to the establishment of Pelican Lake and adjacent water bodies and the ponds and marshes at Ouray National Wildlife Refuge and Pariette Wetlands Wildlife Management Area. The incidence of herons, egrets, thrushes, nuthatches, and icterids has generally remained about the same since 1937. Diurnal raptors have largely declined in abundance in the desert region of Uintah County since Twomey's (1942) study. Plovers, sandpipers, phalaropes, and the White-faced Ibis were generally less common …

Role Of Livestock And Black-Tailed Jackrabbits In Changing Abundance Of Kochia Americana, William R. Clark, Frederic H. Wagner Oct 1984

Role Of Livestock And Black-Tailed Jackrabbits In Changing Abundance Of Kochia Americana, William R. Clark, Frederic H. Wagner

Great Basin Naturalist

Historical accounts and matched photographs indicate sharp decline of once-abundant Kochia americana in eastern Great Basin vegetation since the early 1900s, most of the decline by the late 1950s. Exclosure data show further decline from 1957 to 1973, then some increase between 1970 and 1973 and 1976 and 1981. Utah sheep numbers, at maximum from 1925 to 1940 and declining steadily to the 1970s, may have induced the long-term changes. Black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus), could not have induced vegetation decline, but could have added to livestock pressure and abetted the trend. In 1972, rabbits near a cyclic high …

Environmental Site Characteristics And Incidence Of Chokecherry Black Knot In Utah, Sarah Ann Stewart, D. J. Weber Oct 1984

Environmental Site Characteristics And Incidence Of Chokecherry Black Knot In Utah, Sarah Ann Stewart, D. J. Weber

Great Basin Naturalist

Black knot disease of chokecherries, induced by Dibotryon morbosum (Schw.) Th. & Syd., is widely distributed in Utah. The incidence of black knot was measured by determining the ratio of total black knot gall length to total stem length of plants and then expressing that value as a percentage of diseased stems in the sample plot. The environmental site factors measured were elevation, exposure, slope, soil pH, soil depth, distance to surface water, plant moisture stress, and associated vegetation. Numerical values were determined for each of these variables at each of 18 randomly located plots. Correlation coefficients for plant moisture …
