What The Original Book Of Mormon Manuscript Is Not, John W. Welch
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
For well over a decade, FARMS has sponsored extensive research on the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon. About 25 percent of the pages that were written by Oliver Cowdery and other scribes as Joseph Smith dictated the Book of Mormon in 1829 have survived down to the present day. While much has been written and said about what the original manuscript is, perhaps just as significant is a collection of facts about what it is not.

New Farms Release-Isaiah In The Book Of Mormon
New Farms Release-Isaiah In The Book Of Mormon
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The richness and depth of Isaiah's teachings are often seen as barriers to understanding his words. Scholars devote their entire careers to the study of Isaiah's writings and never run low on questions to answer, interpretations to ponder, or teachings to explore and expound on. It is widely felt that the Isaiah passages quoted by Nephi, Jacob, Abinadi, and the resurrected Lord are the most difficult sections of the Book of Mormon to understand. Isaiah was commanded by the Lord to speak in such a way that his rebellious audience would "hear...but understand not" and would "see...but perceive not …
Captain George Cannon: One Man's Role In The Conquest Of Sugar In The Transatlantic Slave Trade, Leah Brown
Captain George Cannon: One Man's Role In The Conquest Of Sugar In The Transatlantic Slave Trade, Leah Brown
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Numerous scholars have examined the transatlantic slave trade in an attempt to understand the brutal system. However, there has been little research on the “Middle Passage,” the part of the trade system when the enslaved would be boarded onto slaving vessels and forced to endure months of abuse till they landed in the Americas. This paper examines the logbook of Captain George Cannon of the slave ship Iris to understand the life of one of the slaving captains and how a seemingly regular British citizen could become such a key member of the system. It came down to political, economic, …

The current issue of the FARMS Review of Books (volume 11, number 2) features reviews of the groundbreaking book How Wide the Divide? A Mormon and an Evangelical in Conversation, by Craig L. Blomberg and Stephen E. Robinson. Review editor Daniel C. Peterson writes, "The appearance of [this book] seems to us, as well as to others, to offer a very significant opportunity to begin a new chapter in the often troubled relationship between Latter-day Saints and their conservative Protestant brothers and sisters-perhaps even ultimately with other Christians beyond the evangelical wing of modern Western Protestantism. We want to …

Further Evidence For Book Of Mormon Names, John A. Tvedtnes, Matthew Roper
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In recent years, ancient sites in and around Israel have yielded numerous ancient writings, many of which contain proper names. Although many of the names are known from the Bible and other ancient texts, others were unattested in ancient sources until recently. Included in the latter group are several Semitic names that appear in the Book of Mormon. Three of them are discussed here.

Three Trees In The Book Of Mormon, John W. Welch
Three Trees In The Book Of Mormon, John W. Welch
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The tree is a primary symbol in three Book of Mormon texts: Zenos' s allegory of the olive tree (Jacob 5), Lehi's dream of the tree of life (1 Nephi 8), and Alma's discourse on the seed of faith (Alma 32). Interestingly, these three symbolic uses of the tree reflect a shifting emphasis from one era to the next.
Jacob 5, Romans 11: A Common Textual Tradition?
Jacob 5, Romans 11: A Common Textual Tradition?
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Readers who are currently studying the letters of Paul will find an article by James E. Faulconer to be of interest. In "The Olive Tree and the Work of God: Jacob 5 and Romans 11," published in The Allegory of the Olive Tree, he suggests that the olive tree passages in Jacob 5 and Romans 11 are connected by a common text. He first discusses differences between the two passages, noting that they seem to show that the passages simply share a common rhetorical tradition. However, Faulconer goes on to consider that other linguistic evidence "suggests the possibility of …
More Is Better Than One: The Effect Of Ensembling On Deep Learning Performance In Biochemical Prediction Problems, Jacob A. Stern
More Is Better Than One: The Effect Of Ensembling On Deep Learning Performance In Biochemical Prediction Problems, Jacob A. Stern
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents two papers addressing important biochemical prediction challenges. The first paper focuses on accurate protein distance predictions and introduces updates to the ProSPr network. We evaluate its performance in the Critical Assessment of techniques for Protein Structure Prediction (CASP14) competition, investigating its accuracy dependence on sequence length and multiple sequence alignment depth. The ProSPr network, an ensemble of three convolutional neural networks (CNNs), demonstrates superior performance compared to individual networks. The second paper addresses the issue of accurate ligand ranking in virtual screening for drug discovery. We propose MILCDock, a machine learning consensus docking tool that leverages predictions …

Reproductive Ecology And Bee Associates Of Packard’S Milkvetch (Astragalus Packardiae), A Rare Plant Endemic To Southwestern Idaho, Justin R. Fulkerson, C. Lynn Kinter
Western North American Naturalist
Conservation of rare plants is dependent on identifying mechanisms that limit their population or persistence. Successful pollination of flowers is one life history trait that is often limiting in plants occurring in fragmented landscapes. We studied pollinator associates and seed production in Astragalus packardiae (= A. cusickii var. packardiae, Packard’s milkvetch), a narrow endemic that is imperiled as a result of nonnative annual grasses, increased wildfire, recreational off-highway vehicle use, and livestock use. We used pollinator exclusion bags to examine the breeding system of Packard’s milkvetch. We collected and videotaped floral visitors to determine the makeup of the associates …
What's The Password? Account Sharing In The Context Of Passwordless Authentication, Daniel Taylor
What's The Password? Account Sharing In The Context Of Passwordless Authentication, Daniel Taylor
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Passwordless authentication methods are becoming increasingly available for online accounts. This research asks how people will share online accounts with friends and family when there is no longer a password to share. Research participants were introduced to passwordless authentication methods and asked how they imagine the account sharing process might work. They were then introduced to four different methods of passwordless accounts, and asked to evaluate them. Sharing a link to register an additional authentication method proved to be the most popular method of account sharing.
The "Missionary Voice": Bona Fide Sociolect Or Figment Of The Mormon Linguistic Imagination?, Joshua Stevenson
The "Missionary Voice": Bona Fide Sociolect Or Figment Of The Mormon Linguistic Imagination?, Joshua Stevenson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Can members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints consistently identify the so-called “missionary voice”? That is, when presented with a series of unidentified speech samples that are a mix of currently serving young missionaries and their college-aged peers, how accurate will they be at selecting missionaries from the lineup? Additionally, what features (prosodic and otherwise) make the missionary voice distinct? That is, which characteristics of missionary speech most strongly index it as such? In this paper, I seek to answer both of these questions through a sociolinguistic lens (and, in part, via the tools of perceptual dialectology). …
Cloning A Fusion Gene For The Identification Of The Proteins Contained In Ubiquitin-Rich Condensates, Grace M. Whitehead
Cloning A Fusion Gene For The Identification Of The Proteins Contained In Ubiquitin-Rich Condensates, Grace M. Whitehead
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cellular liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) is a mechanism by which membraneless organelles such as polyubiquitinated condensates form and function. A non-receptor tyrosine kinase, Tnk1, binds to the polyubiquitin of polyubiquitinated condensates that are labeled for the proteasome for autophagy through its ubiquitin association (UBA) domain. This tyrosine kinase has links to a subset of hematological cancers, so identifying the protein contents within polyubiquitinated condensates is essential for understanding their significance in cancer pathways and to eventually identify potential therapeutic targets. This honors thesis focuses on the cloning of a fusion gene, pcDNA3.1 mNeonGreen–V5–UBA, as well as its deactivated L36D variant, …
Student Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Mindfulness Interventions In The Esl Classroom, Lauren Smith
Student Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Mindfulness Interventions In The Esl Classroom, Lauren Smith
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Mindfulness has received increased attention in recent years in educational contexts as a tool to help students mitigate negative emotions, enhance resilience, and improve academic performance (Dawson et al., 2020; Galante et al., 2018). Although interventions teaching principles of mindfulness have flourished in elementary schools and university contexts (Felver et al., 2016; Ma et al., 2019), limited research has looked at the effects of mindfulness interventions in ESL (English as a Second Language) educational contexts. This thesis details a study investigating student perceptions of the effectiveness of mindfulness interventions in an Intensive English Program (IEP) for nonmatriculated university students over …
Understanding The Causal Relationship Between State-Level Childcare Tax Credits And Female Labor Participation, Emma K. Webster
Understanding The Causal Relationship Between State-Level Childcare Tax Credits And Female Labor Participation, Emma K. Webster
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Childcare is an expensive commodity in the United States. However, childcare allows parents the flexibility to work while having children. This paper focuses on the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC), a tax-related program intended to reduce the stress of childcare costs that could indirectly increase the female labor participation rate in each state. The paper hypothesizes that states with larger CDCTC values show higher female labor participation rates. It reviews budget constraint theory and previous papers that support the hypothesis and outlines the empirical strategy used in the research. It tests how the CDCTC affects female labor supply …
