A New Home For Farms, Noel B. Reynolds
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
About a year ago, Richard Winwood, recently returned mission president and strong FARMS supporter, was visiting the FARMS office to discuss some future projects. After an hour or so discussing a long list of proposed projects, he bluntly announced that FARMS's ability to fulfill its mission was being compromised by the limitations of its physical facilities.

Time Warner has just published a beautiful book of photographs that gives the world a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of Latter-day Saints. The Mission contains the work of fifty world-class photographers who traveled extensively around the world in the course of a year, documenting the people, history, culture, rituals, and beliefs of the global Church. It was produced with considerable cooperation from the Church and includes a preface written by President Gordon B. Hinckley. It is remarkably accurate for a work by outsiders and its tone is sympathetic to the beliefs and life-styles of members, reflecting no doubt …
Brown Bags Continue
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Rocks, radar, and writers--these have been the topics of the most recent presentations at the FARMS brown bag seminar at BYU. John L. Sorenson, professor emeritus of Anthropology at BYU, spoke about writers, or more accurately, about the authorship of the Book of Mormon. He pointed out that Joseph Smith apparently thought that the Book of Mormon applied to all of North and South America, yet the book fits only a limited Mesoamerican setting. If Joseph had made up the setting or used what he knew about the world, it would not have matched so well a part of the …

Benjamin's Tower And Old Testament Pillars, John W. Welch, Terry L. Szink
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
While scholars are uncertain about the precise nature of the ammud (see August 1995 Insights), it is clear that it was something other than a pillar. Roland deVaux imagines the king "standing on a pedestal" where presumably he worshipped God. Gerhard von Rad, commenting on the pillars in 2 Kings, sees them as some kind of high, narrow platform.

Review Continues Picks And Pans, Larry K. Smith
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The most highly recommended item in the latest Review of Books on the Book of Mormon (volume 7, number 2) is not a single book but a resource library of books on CD-ROM, the LDS Collectors Edition from Infobases. Editor Daniel Peterson gives it three stars (out of a possible four stars) for its usefulness to the student of the scriptures, and reviewer Larry K. Smith calls it a "quantum leap forward" for study and research on the scriptures and related topics because it brings together such a large quantity of good books at such a low price (less than …
Elder L. Tom Perry Examines The Personalities Involved In The Translation Of The Book Of Mormon And In The Restoration Of The Church
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In his address to the friends and supporters of FARMS at the Foundation's 1995 annual banquet, Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve expressed his interest in the human chemistry found in organizations and examined the early history of the Church from this perspective. He spoke of the challenges that Joseph Smith faced as a young husband with a skeptical father-in-law who thought Joseph should be doing something more productive than sitting around the house translating golden plates. He reflected on the challenges that Martin Harris faced in helping to finance the work on the Book of …

Simultaneous Multistep Transformer Architecture For Model Predictive Control, Junho Park, Mohammad Reza Babaei, Samuel Arce Munoz, Ashwin N. Venkat, John Hedengren
Faculty Publications
Transformer neural networks have revolutionized natural language processing by effectively addressing the vanishing gradient problem. This study focuses on applying Transformer models to time-series forecasting and customizing them for a simultaneous multistep-ahead prediction model in surrogate model predictive control (MPC). The proposed method showcases improved control performance and computational efficiency compared to LSTM-based MPC and one-step-ahead prediction models using both LSTM and Transformer networks. The study introduces three key contributions: (1) a new MPC system based on a Transformer time-series architecture, (2) a training method enabling multistep-ahead prediction for time-series machine learning models, and (3) validation of the enhanced time …
Real Time Tracking Of Sleep Behaviors As A Predictor Of Suicidal Ideation For Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Social Anxiety, Yong Seuk Steven Lograsso
Real Time Tracking Of Sleep Behaviors As A Predictor Of Suicidal Ideation For Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Social Anxiety, Yong Seuk Steven Lograsso
Theses and Dissertations
Suicide continues to be a critical concern for society as one of the leading causes of death in the United States, increasing from 10.4 to 13.5 per 100,000 from 2000 to 2016. This risk is further increased up to 8 times for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Suicidal thoughts and behaviors have been difficult to predict on a moment-by-moment basis, in part due to technological challenges. Suicidal ideation has been identified as an important indicator of suicidal behavior and an important measurement for predicting suicide in both neurotypical individuals and individuals with autism spectrum disorder. In particular, sleep disturbances are …
Estimating Hemispheric Specialization In Autistic And Neurotypical Individuals, Madeline Peterson
Estimating Hemispheric Specialization In Autistic And Neurotypical Individuals, Madeline Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
While the brain appears to be symmetrical, macroscopic differences or asymmetries between the two hemispheres emerge through careful quantitative study. Functional asymmetries can accompany these structural asymmetries, and these can be a reflection of hemispheric specialization, or the predominant hosting of macroscale functional network and its accompanying functional properties by a given hemisphere. Prior work has identified the specialization of language to the left hemisphere, visuospatial attention to the right hemisphere, and a dual specialization of executive control to both hemispheres. However, it is largely unknown how specialization is characterized at an individual level, particularly in terms of identifying the …
Undergraduate Students' Conceptions Of Ngss Science And Engineering Practices, Jessie Webb
Undergraduate Students' Conceptions Of Ngss Science And Engineering Practices, Jessie Webb
Theses and Dissertations
In 2013, a new set of science standards was introduced for K-12 science education, called the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which focused on three dimensions of science learning that work together: disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices. These standards are novel in their emphasis on students needing more than only content knowledge to learn science and engineering. The NGSS science and engineering practices (SEPs) stress the importance of students engaging in the authentic practices of scientists and engineers to help them think like a scientist, practice science themselves, and overcome the misconception that science is …

Joseph's Translation Seems To Differ From Kjv Usage, Terrence L. Szink
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In Mosiah 1:14, King Benjamin reminds his son Mosiah that if the Lord "had not extended his arm in the preservation of our fathers they must have fallen into the hands of the Lamanites." The English words used in this translation of the ancient record differ from those used for the same concepts in the English translation in the King James Version (KJV) of the Old Testament, thus shedding light on how independent Joseph Smith may have been from KJV phraseology in his translation.

Upon The Tower Of Benjamin, John W. Welch, Terry L. Szink
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
When King Benjamin crowned his son Mosiah, all the people in Zarahemla sat in tents around the temple while Benjamin addressed them. Because he "could not teach them all within the walls of the temple, therefore he caused a tower to be erected, that thereby his people might hear the words which he should speak unto them" (Mosiah 2:7). Was the need to improve the acoustics the only reason for the construction of this tower? Recent research has discovered ancient precedents for the use of such "towers" in royal convocations and coronation ceremonies. These biblical and Jewish precedents are not …

Pop Gugak And E-Sang: Negotiating Traditional And Pop Genre Categories In Expressions Of Identity, Jessica Ellis
Theses and Dissertations
Korean traditional music has a popularity problem among Korea's contemporary audiences; given the choice of what to listen to, few South Koreans choose to listen to gugak. To address and overcome this popularity problem, traditional Korean musicians are negotiating and reconstructing traditional Korean music by adopting, appropriating, and altering elements of Korean and international pop music. To this end, Gugak groups recently have been incorporating western musical practices and aesthetics in their performances in digital platforms (YouTube and reality television programs) and in concerts to contemporize the genre and develop a more positive relationship between Koreans and their national music. …
Gene Dive: Assessing The Diversity Of Perchlorate Reducing Genes In Mars Analog Environments, Colin Michael Robinson
Gene Dive: Assessing The Diversity Of Perchlorate Reducing Genes In Mars Analog Environments, Colin Michael Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
Biotic perchlorate reduction, a metabolic process that potentially occurs on Mars, has long been the subject of speculation in astrobiology. To determine whether it could be a viable metabolic strategy on the Red Planet, we sought to determine whether biotic perchlorate reduction could evolve and persist in Mars-analog environments on Earth. In this study, we introduce Gene Dive, a novel computational methodology that leverages profile hidden Markov models, sequence alignment, phylogenetic tree construction, and Faith's phylogenetic diversity to probe the prevalence and diversity of perchlorate reducing genes in metagenomes. To determine whether biotic perchlorate reduction persists in a wide range …
