Follow Indian Example, Nibley Urges
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
"It would be hard to imagine two cultures more opposed than our own and that of the Indians." These words summarize a central argument of a new paper by Hugh Nibley. In October 1992 Nibley gave a challenging and insightful address at the Bill of Rights Symposium sponsored by the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU. It has been published as "Promised Lands" in the Clark Memorandum by the Law School and is available as a reprint from F.A.R.M.S.
Firesides Planned
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In addition to speaking at firesides periodically in the Salt Lake and Provo areas (call for details), scholars associated with F.A.R.M.S. are sometimes invited to travel to more distant locations to conduct firesides for interested friends of the Foundation. In October, Truman Madsen spoke at a successful F.A.R.M.S.-sponsored fireside in San Diego, on which we will report in the future. In the coming weeks, F.A.R.M.S. will sponsor the following firesides.

Papers delivered at the conference have been published by the center and Bookcraft, and F.A.R.M.S. has arranged to reprint one of the chapters that particularly sheds light on the Book of Mormon.
Bat Creek Stone Revisted
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
For a number of years F.A.R.M.S. has devoted attention to an issue of considerable importance for the Book of Mormon: what were the number and nature of contacts between the Old World and the Americas before Columbus? John Sorenson in particular has contributed to the discussion of this issue, most significantly in his publication (with Martin Raish) of the two-volume, annotated bibliography, Pre-Columbian Contacts with the Americas across the Oceans.

Paper Considers Book Of Mormon Temples
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Did the people of the Book of Mormon have temples as we know them? What did their temples mean to them, according to the Book of Mormon account? These and many other questions receive careful treatment in "The Temple in the Book of Mormon: The Temples at the Cities of Nephi, Zarahemla, and Bountiful" by John W. Welch, which is available as a preliminary report on the order form in this issue of Insights. In final form, it will be included in Temples in the Ancient World, which will be published by Deseret Book and F.A.R.M.S. next spring.

L ONG unseen by LDS scholars, an 847-page typescript entitled The Truth, The Way, The Life by B. H. Roberts will soon be published by BYU Studies. Roberts worked on this treatise mainly in 1927-1928, but he was still revising it in 1932, so it contains some of his last words written for publication; he died in 1933.

Annual Dinner Builds Friendships
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Over 300 people gathered on October 30 to enjoy dinner, speeches, and association with friends old and new at the annual F.A.R.M.S. banquet. The featured speaker was Elder Dallin H. Oaks, who gave a major address on the historicity of the Book of Mormon. He described the strong position enjoyed by scholars willing to entertain evidence from both reason and faith, stressing the complexity and consistency of the ancient record. He challenged assertions of biblical criticism and pointed out that even if rational arguments about the historicity of the Book of Mormon should result in a draw (for lack of …

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The character and claims of Joseph Smith are fundamental to the claims of the Church he founded. Knowing this, critics of the Prophet have contended for more than a century and a half that he and his family were the kind of people from whom nobody would want to buy a used car, much less receive a plan of salvation.

Farms-Led Expedition Examines Likely Candidate For Lehi's Old-World Bountiful
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The much-delayed and long-awaited examination of Wadi Sayq, a likely site for Old World Bountiful, became a reality recently. In April, a team of researchers examined the port area of Khor Kharfot ("Fort Inlet" in English) through which the Wadi Sayq enters the Indian Ocean on the southern coast of Oman, at the extreme western end near the border with Yemen. Their findings indicate that Khor Kharfot may be the site of Lehi's Bountiful.

The April 1993 Ensign magazine contained an article discussing three New Testament words, restoration, endow, and perfect. Those studies were drawn from a longer paper by John W. Welch published by F.A.R.M.S. That paper similarly discussed a total of twelve biblical Greek words. If you missed that paper when it was first offered in 1991, you may want to read it now. In addition, travellers who recruit five additional tour members can travel free.

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Readers interested in ancient research and Mormon studies will welcome several articles in the latest issue of BYU Studies. A short study by Donald Parry discusses a new insight into Psalm 24:6, widely recognized as a temple psalm. Parry suggests that the Hebrew dor ("generation") might be read as dur ("circle"), possibly alluding to a prayer circle of those who seek the Lord. Psalm 24 may reflect ancient pre-Mosaic temple practices, or it may prophetically look forward to the post-Mosaic temple era, when higher ordinances are known to mankind.

Although a simple book in several respects, the Book of Mormon is also marvelously complex, as in the interconnections between several of its texts. No example of this phenomenon is more instructive than the case of Lehi's and Nephi's visions.

Vanguards Of Change In The "Georgia Of The North": Youth Activism In The New Jersey Civil Rights Movement, 1935-1955, A Digital History Project, Emily Peterson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Although often left out of common narratives around the civil rights movement, New Jersey provides a compelling setting to examine the Black freedom struggle and how it continues into our world today. Using primary source research focused around African American youth in Montclair, Newark, Plainfield, and Princeton, I created a digital history website designed to present the pivotal role Black youth played in shaping the civil rights struggles in the mid-nineteenth century. By highlighting how youth activism in New Jersey advanced efforts for racial justice in the state and facilitated regional and national collaboration, this website helps us understand the …
