Ogham Article Published
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In the Fall 1989 Insights we mentioned that a review of claims of the finding of early inscriptions in the New World written in Ogham, a language from medieval Ireland, would be published soon in the Review of Archaeology by David Kelley. That article has now been published (Spring 1990, pp. 1-10), and even though it is a rather technical discussion, you may want to examine it.

September 1991 brought Stephen D. Ricks's three-year term as President of F.A.R.M.S. to a close. Without compensation, Professor Ricks has given hundreds of hours to the direction of the organization. Under his vigorous leadership and with increased levels of volunteer support, F.A.R.M.S. has grown and greatly increased its output over those three years.

Kingship And Temple In 2 Nephi 5-10, John M. Lundquist, John W. Welch
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Several studies have demonstrated that building (or renovating) and maintaining a temple was an integral part of the legal formation and ongoing legitimation of ancient Near Eastern states and societies. (See John M. Lundquist, "Temple, Covenant, and Law in the Ancient Near East and in the Old Testament," in Israel's Apostasy and Restoration [Grand Rapids, Michigan: Baker Book House, 1988]).

New Nibley Book Focuses On Anti-Mormon Writings
New Nibley Book Focuses On Anti-Mormon Writings
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal" (1 Corinthians 13:1). Since then, the terms "tinkling cymbals" and "sounding brass" have often been used to signify words of emptiness and confusion, an apt description of most writings critical of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. In Tinkling Cymbals and Sounding Brass: The Art of Telling Tales about Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, volume 11 of the Collected Works of Hugh Nibley, Brother Nibley brings his …
The Gospel As Taught By Nephite Prophets, Noel B. Reynolds
The Gospel As Taught By Nephite Prophets, Noel B. Reynolds
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The Book of Mormon uses the terms gospel and doctrine to refer to the way by which individuals come to Christ. Three Book of Mormon passages in particular (2 Nephi 31:2-32:6; 3 Nephi 11:23-39; 3 Nephi 27:13-21) define the gospel of Jesus Christ, each in a six-point formula. This formula states that if people will (1) believe in Christ, (2) repent of their sins, and (3) submit to baptism in water as a witness of their willingness to take his name upon themselves and keep his commandments, he will (4) pour out his Spirit upon them and cleanse them of …

References To Abraham Found In Two Egyptian Texts, John Gee
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
After years of going unnoticed, significant references to Abraham have recently surfaced in two Egyptian texts. They provide important links between father Abraham and Facsimiles 1 and 2 in the Pearl of Great Price. The two references are found in papyri catalogued as Leiden 1 383 and I 384. Both texts come from Thebes and date to about the same time as the Joseph Smith papyri.

Violent End To Maya Civilization?
Violent End To Maya Civilization?
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
A May 26 article in the Washington Post reports on the archaeological research of Vanderbilt U. Prof. Arthur Demarest that shows that the Maya civilization may have collapsed much more violently and much more rapidly than previously thought. "The whole region was gripped by endemic warfare far more destructive than anything we had ever imagined," says Demarest. He believes that this collapse was related to overpopulation and poor soils.
Correction Or Clarification
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In the May 1991 issue of Insights, reference was made to Joseph Smith's New York Reputation Re-examined as "expressly anti-Mormon." Whereas affidavits reprinted and analyzed in this book may be considered "anti-Mormon," F.A.R.M.S. expresses no position about the book.
Antenantiosis In The Book Of Mormon
Antenantiosis In The Book Of Mormon
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Gail Call, one of our enthusiastic F.A.R.M.S. readers, has pointed out the presence in the Book of Mormon of an interesting figure of speech called antenantiosis. In this figure of speech, an expression is stated in terms of its negated opposite. The result is to express the positive in a very high degree, or as the biblical scholar E.W. Bullinger puts it, "We thus emphasize that which we seem to lessen" (Figures of Speech Used in the Bible [Baker Book House: Grand Rapids, 1989], pp. 159-64).

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
To enrich your study of the New Testament, F.A.R.M.S. offers a ground-breaking collection of twelve LDS word studies from the Greek New Testament. The eighth Article of Faith states, "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly." Many nuances and connotations of Greek words in the writings of John, Paul, Peter, and others are of great interest to Latter-day Saints.

Symbolic Action As Prophetic Curse, Donald W. Parry
Symbolic Action As Prophetic Curse, Donald W. Parry
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
At one point in his ministry, Isaiah was instructed by the Lord to remove his garment and shoes and walk "naked [like a slave, without an upper garment] and barefoot" among the people. Isaiah's action was to be a sign, for as Isaiah walked like a slave, even so would the Egyptians become slaves to the Assyrians (Isaiah 20:2-4). This prophetic symbolic action by Isaiah represented a prophetic curse that destruction and ruin would come upon the Egyptians.
