Connecting Local Archive Data To Wikidata: Focusing On The Archives Of National Debt Redemption Movement, Jaehyuk Yun, Sam G. Oh

Journal of East Asian Libraries

This study aims to enhance accessibility and data utilization of digital cultural heritage preserved by the National Debt Redemption Movement (NDRM) digital archive. The NDRM archive wants to promote the historical value of cultural heritage, but it struggles with data openness, a common problem for small local archives. In order to overcome this limitation, the research proposes using Wikidata and its SPARQL-based query service. This includes analyzing NDRM materials, the current state of the archive, and metadata elements, and then mapping these to Wikidata properties. Research shows that integrating archival data into Wikidata has the advantages of data expansion, quality …

Collaborative Teaching To Impact: Embedding Wikipedia Editing In An Asian Studies Curriculum, Angie Chau, Ying Liu Feb 2024

Collaborative Teaching To Impact: Embedding Wikipedia Editing In An Asian Studies Curriculum, Angie Chau, Ying Liu

Journal of East Asian Libraries

The use of A.I. tools in learning and research introduces significant challenges to conventional essay assignments in Humanities, necessitating the exploration of alternative teaching and evaluation methods.

In many academic libraries, subject Librarians are often invited by instructors to teach one-shot library research skills workshops as guest speakers. The one-shot library instruction model is “not sufficient to convey the depth and breadth of information literacy concepts to students”, however, it remains in use “in part because of the sheer practicum of the model.”

In response to the identified need for change, the instructor and the librarian undertook a case study …

In Situ Chlorine Generation And Rare Earth Chlorination By Molten Salt Electrolysis, Mark Schvaneveldt, Tyler Williams, Ranon Fuller, Devin Rappleye Feb 2024

In Situ Chlorine Generation And Rare Earth Chlorination By Molten Salt Electrolysis, Mark Schvaneveldt, Tyler Williams, Ranon Fuller, Devin Rappleye

Faculty Publications

Chloride volatility processes for purifying actinide and rare earth elements have historically required the use of Cl2 tanks. To minimize the hazards associated with these processes, an apparatus was designed to produce Cl2 via molten salt electrolysis. Within this apparatus, one can generate Cl2, chlorinate metals, and consume excess Cl2. Here, electrode materials were tested for their ability to generate Cl2, the composition of the gaseous electrolysis product was evaluated using a quadrupole mass spectrometer, and a Ce foil sample was successfully chlorinated using the electrochemically generated Cl2.

Eye For An Eye: Retributive Justice In The Hornet's Nest, Amelia Scott

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Rooted in Greek myth and Himalayan culture, The Hornet’s Nest is a high fantasy novel revolving around two women; Lady Nestra, a stepmother set on avenging her family, and Ambrosi, the youngest daughter of the husband Nestra plans to kill. Told through Ambrosi’s eyes, The Hornet’s Nest is based on Aeschylus’ famous Oresteia trilogy and is a study on moral relativism, justice, and the bloody cycle of revenge. This thesis contains 100 pages of the novel and a critical analysis that deconstructs its relationship with the original plays. It focuses on the parallels between Nestra and Ambrosi, and how their …

The Belonging Process: How Low-Income, Bipoc & First-Generation Students On Byu Campus Experience Belonging, Josephine Zenger

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This mixed-methods study employed the Experience Sampling Method (ESM; Csíkszentmihályi; Larson, 1984; Zirkel et al., 2015) to document the feelings and experiences of belonging for 22 low-income, BIPOC, first generation college students and a comparison group of 15 White, middle-upper class students at Brigham Young University (BYU), a predominantly White, middle class, religious university. Due to, among other things, these demographic realities, BYU grapples with structures and cultures that marginalize minority students on campus. Data analysis from ESM surveys, interviews, and focus groups reveal that regardless of background (i.e, including White middle-class students), participants experienced a sense of exclusion at …

Experimental Determination Of The Electrochemical Properties Of Bismuth Chloride In Eutectic Licl-Kcl And Licl-Kcl-Cacl2 Molten Salts, Greg Chipman, Bryant Johnson, Cameron Vann, Lance Whitesides, Devin Rappleye Feb 2024

Experimental Determination Of The Electrochemical Properties Of Bismuth Chloride In Eutectic Licl-Kcl And Licl-Kcl-Cacl2 Molten Salts, Greg Chipman, Bryant Johnson, Cameron Vann, Lance Whitesides, Devin Rappleye

Faculty Publications

Bismuth has been investigated as a potential liquid electrode for molten salt electrorefining, but the electrochemical behavior of Bi3+/Bi redox couple has received scant attention in eutectic LiCl-KCl melts and no studies were found in the ternary LiCl-KCl-CaCl2 melts. LiCl-KCl-CaCl2 melts offer some advantages over eutectic LiCl-KCl, such as a lower melting point. Cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry and open-circuit chronopotentiometry were used to measure electrochemical parameters, such as diffusivity and standard apparent potential of bismuth electrodeposition, in LiCl-KCl and LiCl-KCl-CaCl2 eutectics. The mean diffusivity values of 6.71 x 10-6 cm2 …

New Mathematics Teachers' Goals, Orientations, And Resources That Influence Implementation Of Principles Learned In Brigham Young University's Teacher Preparation Program, Caroline S. Gneiting Feb 2024

New Mathematics Teachers' Goals, Orientations, And Resources That Influence Implementation Of Principles Learned In Brigham Young University's Teacher Preparation Program, Caroline S. Gneiting

Theses and Dissertations

Research in mathematics education shows that new mathematics teachers struggle to implement reform teaching practices that they learned in their teacher preparation programs. In this study, the researcher observed and interviewed three new mathematics teachers (within five years of graduation) to further explore the question of why new teachers use or do not use what they learned in their teacher preparation program. The study uses an expanded version of Schoenfeld's decision-making theory of Orientations, Goals, and Resources. This theory proved useful in the analysis of the research data, providing a framework to incorporate and organize the numerous reasons suggested by …

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been identified as promising biomarkers for the noninvasive diagnosis of various diseases. However, challenges in separating EVs from soluble proteins have resulted in variable EV recovery rates and low purities. Here, we report a high-yield ( > 90%) and rapid ( <  10 min) EV isolation method called FLocculation via Orbital Acoustic Trapping (FLOAT). The FLOAT approach utilizes an acoustofluidic droplet centrifuge to rotate and controllably heat liquid droplets. By adding a thermoresponsive polymer flocculant, nanoparticles as small as 20 nm can be rapidly and selectively concentrated at the center of the droplet. We demonstrate the ability of FLOAT to separate urinary EVs from the highly abundant Tamm-Horsfall protein, addressing a significant obstacle in the development of EV-based liquid biopsies. Due to its high-yield nature, FLOAT reduces biofluid starting volume requirements by a factor of 100 (from 20 mL to 200 µL), demonstrating its promising potential in point-of-care diagnostics.

Nurturing Academic Writing: Empowering Students Through Socratic Seminars, Rebekah Crawley Feb 2024

Nurturing Academic Writing: Empowering Students Through Socratic Seminars, Rebekah Crawley

The Utah English Journal

Throughout my eight years as a high school English teacher, I have struggled to know how to expand my students’ abilities to write academically. That struggle has only been exacerbated in recent years with the increasing use of smartphones, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the introduction of Artificial Intelligence programs. With constant resistance from defeated students, it’s easy to get discouraged. However, this resistance is not new and one technique that has consistently helped me encourage even the most reluctant students to overcome writing challenges is the Socratic Seminar or Fishbowl Discussion.
