"Are They Our Enemies?" Delta Interaction With The Japanese-American Internment Camp At Topaz, Heather Pabst

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

In the small town of Delta, in the barren desert valley of central Utah, a rare phenomenon occurred during World War II. For the first time, fresh seafood was available in chis land-locked town. The entrepreneurs were the Hoshiyama brothers, internees of the Japanese-American internment camp located just sixteen miles outside of Delca. The wartime internment brought more than just fresh fish co Delea. le provided an economic boom, a new rival for high school sports, a venue for incerculcural exchange, and much more. Sadly, it also unearthed some of the intolerance of the town. In many aspects, the reaction …

Reclaiming A Rich Heritage: "Because They Don't Make Wood Like They Used To!", Mary Alice Cannon

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Railroad fans, history enthusiasts, or those who just like old things, sit back and relax! One no longer needs to search for musty old buildings to feel a part of the past. It is now possible to enjoy one's heritage while sitting in the comfort of one's home. In fact, one's own home might be made out of history. Such is the case in hundreds of homes and buildings throughout the United States that have been built from the millions of board feet of salvaged wood coming from a large part of railroad and United States history-the Lucin Cutoff trestle. …

Preface, Joni Poppitz Stimpson

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

A few years ago, at the beginning of my career as a history major, I first noticed The Thetean. While passing through the department lounge its cover caught my eye-its contents then surprised me even more. I still remember my amazement that a journal existed to publish the work of history students. I picked up a copy, took it home to read, and from chat moment on I have been hooked.

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Blue Moon is a werewolf romance novel that emphasizes the heartbreak and triumph of human love through a cast of non-human characters. This story is written to explore the complexities of love, acting as an intersection between werewolves and romantic tragedy. In Blue Moon, Luna’s perfect world comes crashing down when her soulmate, Aspen, rejects her as his mate, something unheard of in werewolf culture. In a desperate attempt to win his affection, Luna feigns a soulmate bond with Kodiak, an alpha werewolf who is looked down upon for having no mate. As the layers of Luna’s relationship with …

The Role Of Age, Sex, And Mglur5 Receptors In Hippocampal Depotentiation In Mice, Michael Dew Mar 2024

The Role Of Age, Sex, And Mglur5 Receptors In Hippocampal Depotentiation In Mice, Michael Dew

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Synaptic plasticity of excitatory hippocampal circuits is one of the primary cellular mechanisms of learning and memory. Synaptic plasticity is also implicated in many disease states such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and Alzheimer disease. Long-term potentiation (LTP) is the plastic strengthening of synapses, while long-term depression (LTD) is the weakening of synapses. Depotentiation is the process of reversing previously established long-term potentiation. Depotentiation has not been studied as thoroughly as long-term potentiation and long-term depression. We examined the role of age, metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5), and sex in the process of CA1 hippocampal depotentiation in young CD-1 mice …

Gt-Ches And Dycon: Improved Classification For Human Evolutionary Systems, Joseph S. Johnson Mar 2024

Gt-Ches And Dycon: Improved Classification For Human Evolutionary Systems, Joseph S. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work is to rethink the process of learning in human evolutionary systems. We take a sober look at how game theory, network theory, and chaos theory pertain specifically to the modeling, data, and training components of generalization in human systems. The value of our research is three-fold. First, our work is a direct approach to align machine learning generalization with core behavioral theories. We made our best effort to directly reconcile the axioms of these heretofore incompatible disciplines -- rather than moving from AI/ML towards the behavioral theories while building exclusively on AI/ML intuition. Second, this …

Rapid Discovery Of House-Keeping Genes In The Bacterium Kushneria, Using A Slalom-Library-Based Crispri Forward Genetic Screen, Andrew Jenkins Mar 2024

Rapid Discovery Of House-Keeping Genes In The Bacterium Kushneria, Using A Slalom-Library-Based Crispri Forward Genetic Screen, Andrew Jenkins

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Rising soil salinity levels worldwide have resulted in the loss of millions of hectares of viable cropland. Several solutions to this problem have been posited, including looking into the properties of salt-tolerant plants. Recent research into salttolerant plants in southern Utah has found a host of microorganisms isolated from the soil, plant surfaces, or plant tissues that stimulate salt tolerance in alfalfa. Leveraging a Mobile-CRISPRi system to repress a library of genes created through the recently developed sgRNA Library Assembly by Ligation onto Magnetic Beads (SLALOM) protocol, we induced genome-wide repression of genes in Kushneria spp. grown under optimal and …

“The History Of Every Country Begins In The Heart Of A…Woman”: Willa Cather’S Reclamation Of The Female American Immigrant Through Edenic Western Narratives, Emma Fox Mar 2024

“The History Of Every Country Begins In The Heart Of A…Woman”: Willa Cather’S Reclamation Of The Female American Immigrant Through Edenic Western Narratives, Emma Fox

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes Willa Cather’s Great Plains Trilogy—O, Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark (1915), and My Ántonia (1918)—in the context of the immigration boom of the early 1900s and the myth of an “American Eden.” This concept was born of cultural portrayals of the West as dominated by white, male pioneers who subdued the landscape, but Cather’s novels, centered around immigrant families, significantly revise this popular myth. Nativists saw the West as the source of American virtues such as democracy and diligence and viewed sending immigrants West as an essential tool for “Americanization,” the process by which …

To assess the ecological validity of these videos, a survey examines participants' perceptions of realism, difficulty, and anticipated anxiety across 11 ethical scenarios. Participants include undergraduate and graduate students, as well as licensed professionals. This research aims to provide empirical evidence supporting the validity of …

Development Of N-H N-Heterocyclic Carbene Pd Catalysts For Cross-Coupling Reactions In Organic Synthesis, Rachel Nicole Owens Mar 2024

Development Of N-H N-Heterocyclic Carbene Pd Catalysts For Cross-Coupling Reactions In Organic Synthesis, Rachel Nicole Owens

Theses and Dissertations

The use of N-H N heterocyclic carbene ligands (NHC's) in organometallic chemistry has become a field of interest due to their unique properties that lead to new and interesting reactivity. The hydrogen on the nitrogen of the NHC can be deprotonated, creating an anionic species, or it can participate in hydrogen-bonding with different substrates. In this work we will explore the unique reactivity of N-H NHC palladium complexes in different cross coupling reactions, including the Suzuki-Miyaura and Heck reactions. Our work demonstrates that N-H NHC complexes of palladium can be accessed from 2-phosphinoimidazole ligands via non-oxidative insertion of the palladium …

International Asylum Law In The U.S. Supreme Court, Lorin Utsch Mar 2024

International Asylum Law In The U.S. Supreme Court, Lorin Utsch

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The role of international law within the United States legislative system is unclear and fluctuating. The extent to which the United States keeps its international commitments is informed by the application of international law in the country’s highest court, the Supreme Court. The Court’s use of international law varies by case, but consistently applies international law so as to maximize domestic interests. These interests may be of strategic, legal, or ideological value. The Supreme Court cites international asylum law in order to clarify domestic statutes, safeguard domestic sovereignty, and to reemphasize the Court’s preference for domestic statutes over international legal …

The Effects Of Diesel Exhaust Particle Exposure On Adipos Mitochondrial Bioenergetics And Inflammation, Cali Elizabeth Warren Mar 2024

The Effects Of Diesel Exhaust Particle Exposure On Adipos Mitochondrial Bioenergetics And Inflammation, Cali Elizabeth Warren

Theses and Dissertations

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) constitutes a significant component of ambient air pollution that has been implicated in the pathogenesis of metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Among PM2.5 constituents, diesel exhaust particles (DEP) are prevalent particulates that infiltrate the bloodstream to drive systemic pathologies. The purpose of this study was to characterize the metabolic response of adipose tissue to DEP. We aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding by exploring mitochondrial bioenergetics, characterizing the inflammatory marker profile, including adipokines, and conducting a detailed histological analysis of adipocytes to provide valuable insights to the evolving understanding of the intricate …

Growing New Librarians Through Meaningful Internships, Nicole Lewis

Faculty Publications

Internships have the potential to be incredible learning experiences for students, but without thoughtful preparation, they may be nothing more than short-term jobs. Using a metadata internship as a case study, this presentation will discuss how using effective teaching and course design principles could create more thoughtful and meaningful internship experiences, specifically how crafting an internship objective and learning outcomes can help with creating content and learning activities that prepare interns for their hands-on projects. The result is an internship that combines theory and practice into a meaningful experience for the student and delivers needed work for the library.

A Comparison Of Ptychography Programs For Lens-Less Imaging With A High Harmonic Generation Source, Aaron Redd Mar 2024

A Comparison Of Ptychography Programs For Lens-Less Imaging With A High Harmonic Generation Source, Aaron Redd

Undergraduate Honors Theses

High Harmonic Generation provides a coherent source of extreme ultraviolet photons. Tuned to the correct energies, these photons can be resonant with electrons associated with the magnetic moment of many magnetic materials. This thesis provides an investigation into performing ptychographic imaging with a high harmonic source as a step towards performing high resolution imaging of magnetic domains. Three ptychography codes (Ptychodactyl, PyNX, and tike), are compared for image reconstruction quality and ease of use. Tike and Ptychodactyl prove more successful than PyNX. These first two programs reconstruct data from a simple helium-neon laser setup with great success, and tike demonstrates …

American Censorship And The Cartoon During World War Ii, D. Mark Davis Mar 2024

American Censorship And The Cartoon During World War Ii, D. Mark Davis

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

WORLD WAR II was indeed a war of global proportions. It involved fifty-six countries, saw armed conflict on every continent except Antarctica, caused over three billion dollars in physical damage, and cost the lives of over fifty-five million people. However, in spite of the tremendous size and costs of World War II, this era is often remembered in America as a time when men felt honor in fighting and dying for their liberty, women went to work in a patriotic effort to support their nation, and freedom, liberty, and democracy overcame the evil and oppressive forces of fascism. Ironically, during …

The Mutation Of The Model Man: 1936-1945, Andrea Rassmussen Mar 2024

The Mutation Of The Model Man: 1936-1945, Andrea Rassmussen

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Masculinity, or the ideal male model, differed significantly in the war years from the late 1930s. This evolution can be seen through articles in Coronet, in which the majority of stories had male heroes whose physical characteristics, personalities, and social graces all changed as the war started and progressed. The ideal man shifted from the Successful Businessman of the 30s to the Individualistic Team Player of the 40s. I chose these names because they encapsulate the contradiction that made up the model man of the war years. No more was the ideal a cutthroat businessman concerned with nothing except succeeding, …

"To Disenfranchise Them Is To Stab Us": Wells's 1879 Visit To Washington And The Nwsa's Support Of Utah Suffrage, Marci Haskell Mar 2024

"To Disenfranchise Them Is To Stab Us": Wells's 1879 Visit To Washington And The Nwsa's Support Of Utah Suffrage, Marci Haskell

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

In 1879 Emmeline B. Wells stood before the National Woman's Suffrage Association (NWSA) and stated that "the right of franchise held by the women of her Territory should not be wrested from them." Wells, a polygamist wife, spoke at the NWSA conference in Washington, D.C., during a time of intense antipolygamy sentiment in America. Polygamy in Utah was viewed by many-including national suffragists-as an evil that degraded women. Paradoxically, national suffragists of the NWSA, who sought to further women's rights, supported a polygamist wife and the cause of woman suffrage in Utah.

Crimea And The Civil War: The Medical Connection Between Great Britain And The Union Army, Adam Green Mar 2024

Crimea And The Civil War: The Medical Connection Between Great Britain And The Union Army, Adam Green

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

One decade before the Civil War began, a modest and relatively obscure war was fought halfway around the world. The Crimean War was an eye-opener for the British as a whole. The inadequate supplies, wretched living conditions, and poor sanitation that the British army suffered resulted in tremendous losses during the war. The reports of these circumstances launched one of the most profound and widespread medical reform campaigns that the British army had experienced up to that point. The instigation of proper sanitary care, the introduction of Florence Nightingale onto the international stage, and the revamping of the British medical …

Creating St. Dominic: A Demonstrative Case Of High Medieval Canonization Procedure, John D. Young Mar 2024

Creating St. Dominic: A Demonstrative Case Of High Medieval Canonization Procedure, John D. Young

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Saints constituted an important part of medieval religion-both in the central, clerical church organization and in the popular religious elements of society. Medieval Christians, both lay and clerical, looked to saints as divine mediators between God and man by virtue of the deeds they had accomplished during their mortal lives (or that their remains had accomplished post mortem). To be labeled a saint and to be considered worthy of such adoration, one had to be shown to have fulfilled certain requirements, which varied from period to period and from place to place. During the High Middle Ages, this saint-making process …

Tractor Beams And Disease: Probing Repeat Rna Structure Through Single Molecule Force Spectroscopy, Joshua Webster-Ford Mar 2024

Tractor Beams And Disease: Probing Repeat Rna Structure Through Single Molecule Force Spectroscopy, Joshua Webster-Ford

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Huntington’s Disease is characterized by an extended (CAG)n repeat found in the huntingtin (Htt) gene. While the typical human contains 6-20 CAG repeats, people with over 36 repeats manifest symptoms of the disease. The extended CAG repeats allow the Htt pre-mRNA transcript to form a hairpin loop structure which can sequester certain vital proteins such as Muscleblind like protein 1 (MBNL1), hindering their functional role. Further understanding the structure of the MBNL1-RNA complex is possible through force spectroscopy, or “optical tweezers”, applied on the single molecule level. Force spectroscopy generates force versus distance plots for individual RNA molecules, revealing the …

Identifying Highly Responsive Locations For Spinal Motion Tracking Sensors, Tyler Hutchinson Mar 2024

Identifying Highly Responsive Locations For Spinal Motion Tracking Sensors, Tyler Hutchinson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Tracking spinal motion in the lower back serves as a useful tool for aiding diagnostics. This study seeks to determine if a fabric garment with integrated strain sensors may provide sufficient information to identify key spinal motion characteristics typically manifested in skin strain. Sensors adhered directly to an individual’s skin would be the most effective means of capturing such characteristics. However, adhering sensors to skin of the lower back is difficult for frequent or everyday application. This research aims to integrate a sensor system into a more comfortable and readily user-applied device. Here we examine the implementation of such a …

Early Russian-Chinese Relations, Dean William Bennett Mar 2024

Early Russian-Chinese Relations, Dean William Bennett

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

In February. 1654, Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich Romanov dispatched a friendly, if rather pompous, letter on its way across the vast steppes of Siberia and Mongolia to the emperor of China, Shun-chih. In this letter he lamented that the rulers of the two realms had never before established any official contact between themselves, and he expressed a fond hope that the tsar and the emperor might live thenceforth "in friendship, love, and communication." The prospects should have been alluring, promising trade and wealth for both states, and also frequent exchanges of embassies. But less than three years later, the leader of …

The Partisan Press Of Illinois: Motivation, Rhetoric, And Aggression In Hancock County Newspapers, 1839-1844, Elizabeth Prete Bryner

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Much has been written about the pohtical origins of the Mormon conflicts in Nauvoo, Illinois, between 1839 and 1844, but relatively little scholarship has analyzed the role of the partisan press in that conflict. George Gayler and other historians claim that· Mormon political activity ... must be singled out as the chief source of irritation between [ the Mormons] and the Illinois citizens." However, Gayler limits his investigation of the press mostly to the anti-Mormon newspapers, the Nauvoo Expositor and the Warsaw Signal. Governor Thomas Fords History cf Illinois describes the sordid political battle between the Whigs and the …

Statistical Profile Of Southern States Missionaries, 1867-1898, Heather M. Seferovich

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

issionary activity has been a staple feature of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since its organization over 160 years ago. From its inception, Church members have felt themselves obligated and have been exhorted to proclaim the restored gospel to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. As Joseph Smith recorded, "The voice of Warning shall be unto all people, by the mouths of my disciples," because· the field is white already to harvest." Between 1830 and 1995, Latter-day Saints have served approximately 668,000 missions, and the Church has invested an enormous amount of resources and energy in the …

Children On The Mormon Trail, Jill Jacobsen Andros Mar 2024

Children On The Mormon Trail, Jill Jacobsen Andros

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

While reflecting on her experience crossing the plains in a Mormon handcart company at age nine, Agnes Caldwell, recalled:

"Although only tender years of age, I can yet close my eyes and see everything in panoramic precision before me-the ceaseless walking, walking, ever to remain in my memory. Many times I would become so tired and, childlike, would hang on the cart, only to be gently pushed away. Then I would throw myself by the side of the road and cry. Then realizing they were all passing me by, I would jump to my feet and make an extra run …
