Left In The Dust: Byu's Reluctant Response To The Rise Of The Automobile, Caleb Child

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Although Brigham Young UNiversity students and faculty have changed throughout the years, one issue has managed to unite all members of the campus community for almost a century: campus parking lots. As a student in 1946 wrote,

"It goes without saying that we don't like muddy shoes and don't like bad roads; bur what can we do? The natural solution to the problem is to let the school go back to the horse. No parking problem, no roads to worry about. Just put the feed bag on old Dobbin and !er him roam rill school's out. Then a quick whistle, …

"Hiding By Showing": Hans Holbein's The Ambassadors As A Eucharistic Tableau, Katharine Davidson Bekker

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Liturgical cloths and hangings have been a ubiquitous part of the Eucharistic experience for Christian churchgoers for much of the Catholic Church's religious history. While often overshadowed or displaced in religious images by the drapery of individual figures, altar cloths and frontals are occasionally featured, as in the Master of the Aachen Altar's images of The Mass of St. Gregory (figs. I and 2). A similar green cloth to those in the St. Gregory images is seen in the background of Hans Holbein the Younger's 1533 portrait of The Ambassadors (fig. 3). Though much has been said about many of …

Editor's Preface, Alison Wood

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

When writing of her friendship with Henry James, Edith Wharton described their relationship as "an atmosphere of the rarest understanding, the richest and most varied mental comradeship." The friendship began in 1900, when Wharton sent James a brief note congratulating him on a recent publication. They struck up a correspondence, one chat lasted nearly fifteen years. Wharton would lacer reflect on the relationship in her autobiography, calling it "a real marriage of true minds," built upon a shared love of writing and reading. This relationship is documented in large part because of their vast correspondence, as the two authors shared …

Remote Sensing Of Residential Landscape Irrigation In Weber County, Utah, Annelise Marie Capener Apr 2024

Remote Sensing Of Residential Landscape Irrigation In Weber County, Utah, Annelise Marie Capener

Theses and Dissertations

Irrigation of residential properties in urban settings is typified by small and irregular areas, many untrained water users, limited end-use metering, and differing groundcover in contrast to agricultural settings. This makes analyzing irrigation patterns to promote efficient water use challenging. Analysis of Irrigation by Remote Sensing (AIRS) combines multispectral aerial imagery, evapotranspiration data, and ground-truthed measurements to overcome these challenges. We demonstrate the application of AIRS on eight neighborhoods in West Haven, Utah, using 0.6 m National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) and 0.07 m drone imagery, reference evapotranspiration (ET), and water meter data from Weber Basin Water Conservancy District (WBWCD). …

Power And Participation: Women's Participation In The Arab Spring And Its Impact On Women's Empowerment, Mary Harris

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Middle Eastern governments typically score at or near the bottom of indices measuring women’s rights and political participation. The Middle East also contains a large percentile of authoritarian regimes. The Arab Spring challenged these regimes' gender structures as they included vast female participation, but there is little existing research to understand the Spring's impact on opinions of women's participation and empowerment in the region. This study aims to add to existing research on this topic by analyzing Arab Barometer data from 4 questions dealing with opinions of women’s participation in society gathered before, during, and after the Arab Spring. I …

Breaking The Silence: Family Conversations On Suicide, Alexa Diaz Apr 2024

Breaking The Silence: Family Conversations On Suicide, Alexa Diaz

Student Works

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth in the United States. Suicide remains to be a stigmatized topic. There is a necessary need for families to openly communicate about suicide as well as knowing what measures they need to take to prevent them from occurring. Providing a child with a secure attachment and an authoritative parenting style decreases the likelihood of suicidal ideation as well as engaging in suicide-related behaviors (Diamond et al., 2022). Media exposure may serve as a resource for parents to enhance their knowledge on mental health literacy (Abesinghe et al., 2023; Cingel et …

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation uses a three-article dissertation, including a literature review and two research articles, related to the understanding and development of self-regulation (SR). Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), the literature review examined 22 articles researching a self-regulation intervention used in an online, higher education context. The articles included interventions specific to a unique context, interventions used in a specific context but could be easily adapted to other contexts, and generic interventions that could be applied in any context. Important themes revealed in the analysis include the importance of feedback in developing SR, the interaction …

Applying Mathematical Modeling To The Study Of Family Systems, Dahlia Maxwell Apr 2024

Applying Mathematical Modeling To The Study Of Family Systems, Dahlia Maxwell

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical modeling provides a powerful framework for insight into current scientific theories as well as hypothesis generation for further research. Despite its undeniable potential to enrich scientific advancement, the application of mathematical modeling remains conspicuously scarce in the field of family science. The complexity inherent in family dynamics, coupled with the intricate interplay of emotions in the individual, underscores the necessity of a robust analytical approach. Addressing this critical gap in the literature, this thesis introduces a sophisticated mathematical model of family dynamics integrating essential elements from family systems theory, emotion dynamics, and appraisal theory. The model is implemented as …

Key Behaviors And Expressions Of Secondary Administrators And Leadership Teams As Culturally Responsive School Leaders, Belinda Azela Talonia

Theses and Dissertations

Secondary administrative and leadership teams continuously search for practices that bolster cultural proficiency to address increasingly diverse student cohorts. This qualitative case study identifies the culturally responsive school leadership (CRSL) behaviors and expressions of 24 high school administrative and leadership team members in a suburban school district in Utah. Data reveals how each team demonstrates the behaviors and expressions of CRSL framework and how these behaviors and expressions position each school on the culturally proficient continuum. Superimposing the CRSL behaviors and expressions on the cultural proficiency continuum provides a current reality for administrative and leadership teams to assess their tipping …

A Review Of Existing Literature Surrounding Female Educator Sexual Misconduct In Anglo-American Classrooms, Avery Barnes, Isaac Calvert Apr 2024

A Review Of Existing Literature Surrounding Female Educator Sexual Misconduct In Anglo-American Classrooms, Avery Barnes, Isaac Calvert

BYU Education & Law Journal

A 2004 literature review commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education estimated that one in every ten students would experience sexual harassment or abuse at the hands of an educator during their time in public schools. Even more alarming, multiple studies within Shakeshaft’s 2004 review suggested that this issue goes well beyond the reported data. At that time, leading social science research estimated that only 6% of children who were victims of educator sexual misconduct reported it. With significant developments in digital communications technologies since that 2004 study, researchers in the U.S. Department of Education have estimated that the number …

Establishing A Normative Respiratory Baseline For Diaphragmatic Breathing In The Geriatric Population, Madison M. Jensen, Connor J. Wright, Ty K. Hacking, James D. Mead, Ulrike Mitchell, Lauren Adams

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

Respiratory function can be assessed through lung volume measurements such as tidal volume and vital capacity. It can also be assessed by measuring diaphragm mobility and thickness. The diaphragm is a muscle that contributes up to 75% of normal lung ventilation. It averages 1-2 cm of excursion during quiet breathing; this increases significantly to about 7-11 cm during forced breathing. Aging has influences on respiratory function. Diaphragmatic muscle strength decreases, and lung function, capacity, and compliance also decline. There is a steadily growing elderly population in the US and globally. Due to an aging population and the significance respiratory function …

Pre- and post-workshop video recordings were analyzed to evaluate changes in reflective listening skills and the overall consistency of using MI OARS skills. The results revealed significant increases in reflections-to-questions …

Advancing Single-Cell Proteomics Through Innovations In Liquid Chromatography And Mass Spectrometry, Kei Grant Isaac Webber Apr 2024

Advancing Single-Cell Proteomics Through Innovations In Liquid Chromatography And Mass Spectrometry, Kei Grant Isaac Webber

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional proteomics studies can measure many protein biomarkers simultaneously from a single patient-derived sample, promising the possibility of syndromic diagnoses of multiple diseases sharing common symptoms. However, precious cellular-level information is lost in conventional bulk-scale studies that measure tissues comprising many types of cells. As single cells are the building blocks of organisms and are easier to biopsy than traditional bulk samples, performing proteomics on a single-cell level would benefit clinicians and patients. Single-cell proteomics, combined with mass spectrometry imaging, can be used to analyze cells in their microenvironment, preserving spatial information. We have previously used laser-capture microdissection to isolate …

The Effects Of Racial Prejudice And Humanization On Private Aid Donations, Mary Harris, Ashlynn Hokanson, Zeke Peters, Phoebe Roberts, Daniel Nielson

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

World Vision predicts that there are more than 719 million people living in poverty (Peer 2023). Charitable organizations often strive to fill gaps of government programs and alleviate poverty by offering food, clothing, and support to these millions of individuals in need. To be successful in realizing the goals of these charitable organizations, the quantity of charitable donations must be large to create change. Charitable organizations regularly attempt to obtain donations through means of advertising; however, are these methods of advertising effective in soliciting donations to help underprivileged populations across the globe? By improving the understanding of effective donation solicitation …

Let's Get Critical: The Rights And Obligations Of School District Stakeholders Under State Laws Limiting Or Banning Discussion Of Critical Race Theory In K-12 Classrooms, John E. Rumel Apr 2024

Let's Get Critical: The Rights And Obligations Of School District Stakeholders Under State Laws Limiting Or Banning Discussion Of Critical Race Theory In K-12 Classrooms, John E. Rumel

BYU Education & Law Journal

Critical Race Theory has moved from the halls of academia to the center of a national debate about the role of teachers in instructing students about race, race relations and the United States’ troubled history concerning those subjects. Addressing growing concerns over Critical Race Theory from the political right, state legislatures have responded quickly by enacting a host of Anti-Critical Race Theory (anti-CRT) bills that seek to expel Critical Race Theory from the classroom.

Welcome To The Circus: An Analysis Of Kennedy V. Bremerton, Ryan Spencer Apr 2024

Welcome To The Circus: An Analysis Of Kennedy V. Bremerton, Ryan Spencer

BYU Education & Law Journal

Since the inception of the public education system, schools have played numerous roles in student’s lives. Public schools and their employees have acted as educators, babysitters, role models, safe havens, disciplinary settings, and have filled the role of parents for most of each day; so much so, that the legal doctrine of in loco parentis (“in the place of the parents”) has been applied to public schools during school hours. Balancing the numerous roles schools play for the students becomes more difficult when the school must also consider the students’ legal rights as well as those of employees and parents. …

Student Athlete Or Student Employee? Considering The Future Implications Of Recent College-Athletics Decisions Regarding Employee Classification, Nathan Schmutz, Joseph Hanks Apr 2024

Student Athlete Or Student Employee? Considering The Future Implications Of Recent College-Athletics Decisions Regarding Employee Classification, Nathan Schmutz, Joseph Hanks

BYU Education & Law Journal

Nature often provides warning signs of oncoming danger. For example, a generally recognized phenomenon associated with a tidal wave caused by an oceanic earthquake is the major withdrawal of water resembling an extreme low tide. Universities take note, a similar phenomenon might be occurring in relation to college sports. Recent decisions might be signaling a receding of waters before a surge of litigation that results in college athletes being considered employees of the university. This paper considers recent court and administrative decisions that might be indicative of this major shift and discusses possible implications of such a change.

Is There Room For Grace In The American Dream?, Ali Critchfield Apr 2024

Is There Room For Grace In The American Dream?, Ali Critchfield

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

In the face of growing inequality in the United States, researchers have sought to understand why there is not a proportionate level of public concern over widening economic disparities (Kim 2023, 39–54). Much research in this area is grounded in the idea that America has become a meritocracy, where success is earned by merit. Despite the nation’s Puritan beginnings that emphasized that God’s grace, not works, are what led to salvation and success, the country has taken on a meritocratic core, one that effectively eliminates grace in the pursuit of material success. This way of thinking has compounded with the …

The Legality Of Second Chances: Employment For The Formerly Incarcerated, Ella Paligo Apr 2024

The Legality Of Second Chances: Employment For The Formerly Incarcerated, Ella Paligo

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The United States has one of the highest incarceration and recidivism rates globally. This is largely attributed to the fact that a large number of employers reserve the right to not hire those with a criminal record. To combat this, cities and states have enacted “Ban the Box” legislation which prohibits employers from inquiring about criminal history before the interview round. However, with this decision being left up to local and state officials, marginalized individuals are left open to employment discrimination. This paper explores how federal protection, like “Ban the Box” laws, must be implemented to avoid recidivism and reimprisonment.

This research aimed to better understand nurse practitioners’ attitudes towards error approach, perception, and cause using the Medical Error Attitude Scale (MEAS). Additional purposes included the further exploration of APRNs' experiences following an error and support they may or may not receive. A convenience sample of ARPNs licensed in Utah was sent an electronic survey via …

Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Chinese Digital Yuan, Mikayla Cheng Apr 2024

Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Chinese Digital Yuan, Mikayla Cheng

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

China’s rapid progress toward a completely cashless society through the release of its digital yuan marks a pivotal point in monetary history. In recent years, China has taken the next step in digital payment technology by proposing and implementing a fully digital, government fiat, legal tender currency known as the digital yuan. The focus of this paper is understanding the implications of the widespread adoption of digital yuan from the perspective of the Chinese people. I propose that there are three main advantages of the digital yuan for the Chinese people. First, the digital yuan reduces transaction costs through eliminating …

A Practitioner's Approach To Examining Title Ix, Jordan Tegtmeyer, Ashley Nicoletti Apr 2024

A Practitioner's Approach To Examining Title Ix, Jordan Tegtmeyer, Ashley Nicoletti

BYU Education & Law Journal

With the 52nd anniversary of Title IX happening this spring amid recent issues related to gender equity in college sports, we thought it important to examine Title IX’s three-part test. The past year’s Title IX stories indicate a gap in understanding around compliance with its three-part test. Whether it be disparate accommodations for NCAA women’s basketball and softball players or institutions citing Title IX as one of the rationales for dropping sports, Title IX has been all over the news. This article seeks to establish a legal and regulatory framework practitioners can use when thinking about compliance with Title IX’s …

Safeguarding Wetlands Post-Sackett V. Epa: Protecting Indigenous Territories And Environmental Health, Anna J. Mahler, Emily Richardson Apr 2024

Safeguarding Wetlands Post-Sackett V. Epa: Protecting Indigenous Territories And Environmental Health, Anna J. Mahler, Emily Richardson

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The Clean Water Act (CWA) has been a tool for federally recognized tribes to protect the waters within their borders and sacred lands that exist outside the borders of the tribe. Sackett v. EPA limited the scope of the CWA to cover only wetlands that have a continuous surface connection. This restricts the ability of Tribes to protect important waters. The Sackett decision decreases the nation’s ability to protect the chemical, physical, and biological aspects of the waters. This paper explores past legislative remedies and proposes federal wetland protection.
