We introduce a robotic system designed to function as a lightweight, modular, and reconfigurable structure on the Moon. This robust system consists of truss-like robotic triangles, each formed by a continuous inflated fabric tube routed through two robotic roller units and a connecting unit. When deflated, these triangles can be compacted to roughly the volume of the roller units, offering an advantageous stowed-to-deployed volume ratio of 1 to 6.24. Upon inflation, the roller units pinch the tubes, creating corners by reducing the bending stiffness of the tube. Once fully deployed, electric motors move the robotic roller units along the tube, …

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether individuals with moderate Broca's aphasia exhibit different pause duration and frequency patterns compared to individuals without neurological disorders, as well as to explore how speech task type influences pause patterns. A total of 16 participants (eight male and eight female) previously diagnosed with moderate Broca's aphasia and apraxia were included in this study, along with 16 age- and gender-matched control participants. Speech recordings from the 16 participants were sourced from the AphasiaBank database. Included are the initial scripts and the final qualitative thematic codes (created using the grounded method) of two IRB studies completed by the BYU Library's Digital Collections Systems Management Committee. Over 200 million liters of nuclear waste is stored in tank farms in Hanford, Washington, USA. An ongoing effort to immobilize non-solid nuclear waste is through waste vitrification, where waste is mixed and melted with glass-forming chemicals (GFCs) to form a waste glass. Algorithms to determine the ideal mixing recipes are formalized as constrained optimization problems to maximize waste loading in the glass product, with constraints on several properties of the glass melt and final product. Brigham Young University’s West Mountain Observatory (WMO) is a research facility that offers primarily undergraduate students valuable mentoring and hands-on learning opportunities. Established in 1981, the observatory was built in response to increasing light pollution in Provo, Utah, which began affecting research at the Orson Pratt Observatory (OPO) atop the Eyring Science Center on the BYU main campus. Before WMO was created, OPO served as the primary observatory for astronomical research at BYU. Construction plans for a new observatory began in the late 1970s, as university planners and astronomers sought a location with minimal light pollution, favorable elevation, relatively easy …

A Slice Of Archives: Developing Focused Internships, Karen Glenn, Rebecca A. Wiederhold

In this presentation, Brigham Young University discussed how they have partnered with the campus history department to offer paid internships to students interested in exploring careers in archives. A module approach was developed, allowing students to select up to three projects, giving them experience with multiple types of history-related work done in libraries. We hope that long-term investment in this internship program will encourage students to explore careers in the archives field.

Born the ninth of ten children to John and Ann (Rogers) Clark on August 1, 1770, on a plantation in Caroline County, Virginia, William Clark led a full life as a soldier, explorer, Indian agent, Missouri territorial governor, and superintendent of Indian affairs at St. Louis. While a teenager, his family relocated to a new plantation called “Mulberry Hill” near present-day Louisville, Kentucky. Clark joined the Kentucky militia, and then in 1792 President George Washington commissioned Clark a lieutenant of infantry. During General Anthony Wayne’s Ohio River Indian campaigns, Clark fought at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. He resigned his …

Tom Perry Special Collections, this exhibit features photographs, writings, and artifacts that document rural life, agricultural development, and cross-cultural exchange in China from the 1980s through the 2010s. It also highlights the humanitarian and religious contributions of Frederick W. Crook and his wife, Elizabeth Fletcher Crook, including their work with LDS Charities and their service as mission presidents in Taiwan from 1979 to 1980.

This study examines the effectiveness of ChatGPT-4 in enhancing L2 Chinese learners' vocabulary and grammar acquisition within a flipped classroom setting, focusing on its impact on learning outcomes, student motivation, and associated challenges. Conducted over 10 weeks, the study involved 19 native English speakers enrolled in a third-year Chinese course at a U.S. university. The experimental group (n = 11) used ChatGPT to self-study six target words and five grammar structures before attending Tuesday and Thursday sessions, while the control group (n = 8) followed a textbook-based approach. This thesis examines the theme of growing up in young adult and middle grade literature, specifically how various authors deal with this theme through the decisions their characters make or are given and through the actions the characters take. I’ve looked at these decisions and actions in ten popular middle grade and young adult novels, assuming that if they are popular, the middle grade and young adult readers likely have connected with something in those novels. Cortical gyrification is essential for cognitive development, yet its relationship with executive functioning (EF) in pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains unclear. This study examined whether children with TBI exhibit atypical cortical folding in EF-related regions and whether these differences relate to EF performance. Using FreeSurfer 7.1.1, we analyzed local gyrification index (LGI) in 206 participants (ages 5-18) from 14 sites within the ENIGMA Pediatric msTBI Working Group. Vertex-wise regression revealed that longer time since injury (TSI) was associated with increased gyrification in the right fusiform gyrus and multiple left-hemisphere regions, suggesting region-specific neuroplasticity. The shift of immigration enforcement to local jurisdictions has intensified localized patterns of anti-immigrant sentiment, enabling the system of mass deportation to expand at an unprecedented scale. This study examines the effects of 287 (g) agreements, which empower local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws, on Latino residential segregation. Using a quasi-experimental design that compares counties implementing 287 (g) with those that applied but did not implement, we find that these policies significantly slowed declines in Hispanic-white segregation, particularly in early-adopting Southern counties where enforcement was most aggressive. We find no evidence that the program altered patterns of segregation for …

This study examines Fremont mortuary practices in Sevier County, Utah, through a systematic analysis of 50 individuals, recovered mainly from Late period sites. While Fremont burials are typically described as highly variable, the Sevier County sample reveals a striking pattern: approximately half of the individuals exhibit evidence of processing and were left scattered on structure floors rather than being intentionally buried. This pattern stands in contrast to the widely accepted description of Fremont burials as consisting mainly of individuals buried separately in expedient pits with minimal grave goods. This study examines the connection between speech pause patterns and the lexical characteristics of the words that follow. Speech samples of 16 people with moderate Broca's aphasia and 16 age-matched neurologically healthy controls were evaluated in terms of word length, word frequency in the English language, syntactic category, and articulatory complexity. In general, people with aphasia (PWA) produced pauses more frequently before monosyllabic, very high frequency words with lower articulatory complexity, most of which were content words. The length of these pauses did not significantly correlate with any of the lexical factors examined in this study. The control group had …

Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) (KBG) is the most commonly grown cool-season C3 turfgrass. However, as global temperatures rise, KBG struggles to tolerate higher temperatures, leading to increased irrigation demands--a growing concern in arid and semi-arid regions facing escalating drought conditions. In contrast, hybrid bermudagrass (HBG; Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers. x Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt Davy), a warm-season C4 grass, has demonstrated promising adaptability in traditionally cool-season climates. This study explores factors contributing to high proficiency in German speakers, focusing on university graduates who achieved Advanced High or Superior ratings on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) at the end of their university studies. The nine participants, all of whom had significant exposure to German during and/or before their undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University (BYU), shared insights into their language learning experiences. The study uses interviews and surveys to examine key characteristics, strategies, and experiences that influenced participant proficiency. This study explores the effectiveness of pad printing and near-infrared (NIR) sintering for producing conductive silver microparticle traces. A new pad printer was set up, and silver inks with varying concentrations of silver particles (17.5 %v/v, 20 %v/v, and 25 %v/v) were manufactured, printed, and sintered. The study identified sintering time and silver concentration as the most influential parameters affecting resistivity, with the best result of 8.73 × 10⁻⁷ Ω·m achieved using 25 %v/v ink sintered for 3 seconds at full power. Although resistivity continued to decrease at this maximum sintering duration, further optimization of parameters, including NIR bulb distance …

This study demonstrates the 100 g scale manufacture of a plutonium alloy that ages at an accelerated rate. The resulting alloy ages six times faster than typical weapons-grade plutonium due to the addition of ²³⁸Pu. As a major innovation, the process involved using a partial direct oxide reduction technique. This method was achieved by developing a new, complex geometry stirrer using additive manufacturing to reduce the ²³⁸Pu oxide and efficiently incorporate it into weapons-grade plutonium metal. The material was then purified by molten salt extraction and electrorefining before being alloyed with gallium. The alloy was then cold-rolled and …

Despite its theoretical foundation in Goal Setting Theory (GST), empirical research has yielded mixed findings regarding its effectiveness in competitive athletic settings. Prior meta-analyses have included studies across various skill levels and motor tasks unrelated to sport, limiting their applicability to experienced athletes.
