Plot Extraction And The Visualization Of Narrative Flow, Michael A. Debuse
Plot Extraction And The Visualization Of Narrative Flow, Michael A. Debuse
Theses and Dissertations
In order to facilitate the automated extraction of complex features and structures within narrative, namely plot in this study, two proof-of-concept methods of narrative visualization are presented with the goal of representing the plot of the narrative. Plot is defined to give a basis for quality assessment and comparison. The first visualization presented is a scatter-plot of entities within the story, but due to failing to uphold the definition of plot, in-depth analysis is not performed. The second visualization presented is a graph structure that better represents a mapping of the plot of the story. Narrative structures commonly found within …
Assessment Of Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus Longaevaâ D.K. Bailey) Forest Communities Using Geospatial Technologies, David Richard Burchfield
Assessment Of Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus Longaevaâ D.K. Bailey) Forest Communities Using Geospatial Technologies, David Richard Burchfield
Theses and Dissertations
Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva D.K. Bailey) is a keystone species of the subalpine forest in the Great Basin and western Colorado Plateau ecoregions in Utah, Nevada, and California. Bristlecone pine is also the world's longest-lived non-clonal organism, with individuals occasionally reaching ages up to 5,000 years old. Because of its longevity, bristlecone pine contains an important proxy record of climate data in its growth rings. Despite its ecological and scientific importance, bristlecone pine's distribution and associated environmental drivers are poorly understood. Geospatial technologies, including unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and spatial modeling techniques …
3-Adic Properties Of Hecke Traces Of Singular Moduli, Miriam Beazer
3-Adic Properties Of Hecke Traces Of Singular Moduli, Miriam Beazer
Theses and Dissertations
As shown by Zagier, singular moduli can be represented by the coefficients of a certain half integer weight modular form. Congruences for singular moduli modulo arbitrary primes have been proved by Ahlgren and Ono, Edixhoven, and Jenkins. Computation suggests that stronger congruences hold for small primes $p \in \{2, 3, 5, 7, 11\}$. Boylan proved stronger congruences hold in the case where $p=2$. We conjecture congruences for singular moduli modulo powers of $p \in \{3, 5, 7, 11\}$. In particular, we study the case where $p=3$ and reduce the conjecture to a congruence for a simpler modular form.
Cross-National Analysis Of Mothers' Occupational Status In Germany And The United States: Before And After Germany's Work-Family Policy Changes, Paige N. Park
Theses and Dissertations
In many OECD countries, women are underrepresented in the highest status, highest paying positions and overrepresented in the lowest status, lowest paying positions. One potential reason for this inequity is the "motherhood penalty," where women with children face more roadblocks in hiring and promotions. This research investigates occupational segregation among mothers and fathers and analyzes whether gender gaps in occupational status are more extreme for immigrant populations. Using data from the Luxembourg Cross-National Data Center, I compare changes in gender occupational segregation from 2000 to 2016 in Germany and the United States among immigrant and native-born parents. Multinomial logistic regression …
Pinpointing Pornography's Effects: Paring Off The Influences Of Masturbation, Sexual Desire Discrepancy, And Sexual Engagement In Heterosexual Dyads, Brady C. Eisert
Pinpointing Pornography's Effects: Paring Off The Influences Of Masturbation, Sexual Desire Discrepancy, And Sexual Engagement In Heterosexual Dyads, Brady C. Eisert
Theses and Dissertations
Pornography has increasingly become a hot topic of discussion in the United States, likely due to its increasing rate of consumption. Recent scholarship has indicated the need to account for factors such as masturbation and sexual desire discrepancy when conducting pornography research. The current study isolated the influence pornography use had on those in heterosexual romantic relationships (N=713 couples) by parsing out the effects of sexual desire discrepancy and masturbation. This was done by using a series of nested actor-partner interdependence models (APIM) to see how the relationships between pornography use and sexual satisfaction changed in each model. Masturbation and …
Impact Of High Intensity Interval Training Versus Traditional Moderate Intensity Continuous Training On Critical Power And The Power-Duration Relationship, Jessica Rose Collins
Impact Of High Intensity Interval Training Versus Traditional Moderate Intensity Continuous Training On Critical Power And The Power-Duration Relationship, Jessica Rose Collins
Theses and Dissertations
Critical Power (CP) is the greatest power that a person can sustain for prolonged periods of time while maintaining steady state conditions. Work-prime (W’) is the amount of work that can be tolerated when exercising in non-steady-state conditions above CP. A person’s CP and W’ strongly influence the metabolic response and tolerance to exercise. PURPOSE: Compare the effect of equal amounts of moderate intensity continuous training (MICT) and high intensity interval training (HIIT) on CP and W’. Critical Power (CP) is the greatest power that a person can sustain for prolonged periods of time while maintaining steady state conditions. Work-prime …
The Non-Backtracking Spectrum Of A Graph And Non-Bactracking Pagerank, Cory Glover
The Non-Backtracking Spectrum Of A Graph And Non-Bactracking Pagerank, Cory Glover
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis studies two problems centered around non-backtracking walks on graphs. First, we analyze the spectrum of the non-backtracking matrix of a graph. We show how to obtain the eigenvectors of the non-backtracking matrix using a smaller matrix and in doing so, create a block diagonal decomposition which more clearly expresses the non-backtracking matrix eigenvalues. Additionally, we develop upper and lower bounds on the matrix spectrum and use the spectrum to investigate properties of the graph. Second, we investigate the difference between PageRank and non-backtracking PageRank. We show some instances where there is no difference and develop an algorithm to …
Using Phased Whole Genome Sequence Data To Better Understand The Role Of Compound-Heterozygous Variants In Pediatric Diseases, Dustin B. Miller
Using Phased Whole Genome Sequence Data To Better Understand The Role Of Compound-Heterozygous Variants In Pediatric Diseases, Dustin B. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
A compound-heterozygous variant occurs when a child inherits a variant from each parent, with these variants occurring at a different position within the same gene and on opposite homologous chromosomes. These inherited variants may result in two nonfunctional versions of the same gene. Compound-heterozygous variants cannot be identified unless a patients' DNA sequence data is phased. Phasing is a computationally demanding process that requires the use of multiple software tools in order to determine which nucleotide was inherited from which parent. First, in Chapter 1, we review the literature to better understand what research has been conducted on the role …

Southwestern Bats And Their External Bacteria, Ernest W. Valdez, Emily M. Johnson, Edward W. Strach, Patrick A. Lewis, William C. Briggs, Nicole A. Caimi, Ara S. Winter, Jennifer J.M. Hathaway, Diana E. Northup
Western North American Naturalist
Bat species diversity within the United States is greatest in the Southwest, with approximately 30 species present. At least 16 of these bat species hibernate and are susceptible to white-nose syndrome (WNS), which is caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans. Since 2006, millions of bats from 35 U.S. states and 7 Canadian provinces have died from WNS. In previous studies of external surfaces of bats sampled from southwestern states, Actinobacteria were detected that were shown to have antifungal properties against P. destructans in laboratory testing. These studies motivated us to expand our research to sites that represent possible gateways …
Camera Traps Provide Insights Into American Pika Site Occupancy, Behavior, Thermal Relations, And Associated Wildlife Diversity, Constance I. Millar, Kenneth T. Hickman
Camera Traps Provide Insights Into American Pika Site Occupancy, Behavior, Thermal Relations, And Associated Wildlife Diversity, Constance I. Millar, Kenneth T. Hickman
Western North American Naturalist
Custom camera traps were positioned at American pika (Ochotona princeps) haypiles in 12 warm, low-elevation locations of eastern California over 5 years and during warm and cold seasons. These camera traps detected 26 mammal and 10 bird species, including 4331 pika events as well as visits by 16 sympatric herbivores and 7 pika predators. Camera traps documented pika occupancy at some sites that had been evaluated from field surveys as extirpated, and they also confirmed field assessments of extirpation at other sites. Individual pikas could be distinguished by scars, size, and pelage diagnostics, allowing animals to be followed …
An Exploration Of Soil Moisture Reconstruction Techniques, Spencer Nishimoto Low
An Exploration Of Soil Moisture Reconstruction Techniques, Spencer Nishimoto Low
Theses and Dissertations
Satellite radiometers are used to remotely measure properties of the Earth's surface. Radiometers enable wide spatial coverage and daily temporal coverage. Radiometer measurements are used in a wide array of applications, including freeze/thaw states inference, vegetation index calculations, rainfall estimation, and soil moisture estimation. Resolution enhancement of these radiometer measurements enable finer details to be resolved and improve our understanding of Earth. The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) radiometer was launched in April 2014 with a goal to produce high resolution soil moisture estimates. However, due to hardware failure of the radar channels, prepared algorithms could no longer be used. …
Emotional Geographies Of Beginning And Veteran Reformed Teachers In Mentor/Mentee Relationships, Emily Joan Adams
Emotional Geographies Of Beginning And Veteran Reformed Teachers In Mentor/Mentee Relationships, Emily Joan Adams
Theses and Dissertations
Reformed teaching is better for students' conceptual understanding compared to the more popular traditional style of teaching. Many beginning teachers wanting to teach reformed conform to traditional teaching within their first couple years of teaching. I argue that this can happen because the emotional labor to continue teaching reformed without support is too high. Having a reformed math mentor can decrease this emotional labor and provide more support to beginning reformed teachers. This study builds on and adds to Hargreaves (2001) emotional geography framework to better understand the emotional closeness/distance beginning and veteran reformed teachers have talking about their practice. …
Density And Subsurface Burrowing Of A Desert-Dwelling Land Snail, Helminthoglypta Greggi, In The Western Mohave Desert, Rob R. Ramey Ii, Joel M. Diamond, David J. Cerasale
Density And Subsurface Burrowing Of A Desert-Dwelling Land Snail, Helminthoglypta Greggi, In The Western Mohave Desert, Rob R. Ramey Ii, Joel M. Diamond, David J. Cerasale
Western North American Naturalist
This paper reports on the subsurface burrowing of the desert-dwelling land snail Helminthoglypta greggi in the western Mohave Desert. By excavating into the soil layer, we found that the majority of live snails were burrowed into the soil beneath rocks as well as shrubs, and in both disturbed and undisturbed areas. Live snails were found as deep as 50 cm in the soil layer, and shells as deep as 55 cm. Densities averaged 4.3 live snails per square meter of surface area and 10.1 snails per cubic meter of excavated soil. When these densities are multiplied by a conservative habitat …
Internal And External Oblique Muscle Asymmetry In Sprinters And Sprint Hurdlers: A Cross-Sectional Study, Lauren Ashley Renee Adams
Internal And External Oblique Muscle Asymmetry In Sprinters And Sprint Hurdlers: A Cross-Sectional Study, Lauren Ashley Renee Adams
Theses and Dissertations
Background: The abdominal muscles are vital in providing core stability for proper function in most activities. There is a correlation between side asymmetry of theses muscles and dysfunction. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare trunk muscle morphology and trunk rotational strength between sprinters, a symmetrical sport and sprint hurdlers, an asymmetrical sport. Methods: Twenty-one trained collegiate sprinters and sprint hurdlers were recruited for the study (12 M, 9 F), average age (years) 20.2 1.5, height (cm) 176.9 9.1, and weight (kg) 70.6 9.8. Using real-time ultrasound, panoramic images of the internal oblique (IO) and external …
Detecting Remnants Of The Past: Archaeo-Geophysical Prospection Of Fremont Sites In Southern Utah Valley, Jacob P. Jepsen
Detecting Remnants Of The Past: Archaeo-Geophysical Prospection Of Fremont Sites In Southern Utah Valley, Jacob P. Jepsen
Theses and Dissertations
The variable contexts of Fremont habitation sites in Utah Valley often make identification of those sites very challenging for archaeologists. Pit houses and other structures throughout the valley are frequently in plowed fields or other disturbed contexts that obscure their more exact location and nature. The application of geophysical technologies at archaeological sites throughout the world, including in North America, has proven to be an effective means of subsurface archaeological survey. However, geophysical techniques have been underutilized in Fremont archaeology. This paper reports on the employment of two geophysical methods, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and fluxgate gradiometer surveys, at three known …
Precision Maritime Landing Of Autonomous Multirotor Aircraft With Real-Time Kinematic Gnss, Matthew Kent Rydalch
Precision Maritime Landing Of Autonomous Multirotor Aircraft With Real-Time Kinematic Gnss, Matthew Kent Rydalch
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis two methods were developed for precise maritime landing of an autonomous multirotor aircraft based on real-time kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). The first method called RTK-localized method (RLM) uses RTK GNSS measurements to localize a sea vessel and execute the landing. RLM was demonstrated outdoors in hardware and landed on a physically simulated boat called a mock-boat with an average landing error of 9.7 cm. The mock-boat was actuated to have boat-like motion and a forward velocity of ~2 m/s. This method showed that accurate landing is possible with RTK GNSS as the primary means …

Using An Ultraviolet Light Test To Improve Sagebrush Identification And Predict Forage Quality For Wildlife, Roger Rosentreter, Brecken C. Robb, Jennifer S. Forbey
Using An Ultraviolet Light Test To Improve Sagebrush Identification And Predict Forage Quality For Wildlife, Roger Rosentreter, Brecken C. Robb, Jennifer S. Forbey
Western North American Naturalist
Sagebrush identification can be improved by using a relatively easy ultraviolet (UV) light test on specimens. Sagebrush produces a variety of water-soluble polyphenols called coumarins, which fluoresce a blue color under UV light and can help differentiate species, subspecies, and hybrids. We tested 16 different sagebrush taxa (including species and subspecies) from herbarium specimens and found 3 taxa (low sagebrush, Artemisia arbuscula; Wyoming sagebrush, A. tridentata wyomingensis; and basin sagebrush, A. t. tridentata) that were often misidentified. We show that the UV light test can greatly improve identification of these species. Moreover, given that the UV+ chemicals …
Fisher Use Of Postfire Landscapes: Implications For Habitat Connectivity And Restoration, Craig Thompson, Heath Smith, Rebecca Green, Sam Wasser, Kathryn Purcell
Fisher Use Of Postfire Landscapes: Implications For Habitat Connectivity And Restoration, Craig Thompson, Heath Smith, Rebecca Green, Sam Wasser, Kathryn Purcell
Western North American Naturalist
The relationship between fishers (Pekania pennanti), fire, and fuel management in the Sierra Nevada region is complex and highly controversial, and the recent listing of southern Sierra Nevada fishers as endangered has brought this issue to the forefront for many land managers. While wildfire is a natural component of the historic disturbance regime in the dry, mixed conifer forests of California, it also has the capacity to destroy large swaths of suitable habitat and to fragment tenuous populations, particularly given recent shifts in wildfire scope and severity. Therefore, balancing fuel reduction with habitat conservation requires careful consideration of …

Introduction To A Byu Studies Quarterly Special Issue On Open Questions In Latter-Day Saint Theology, Eric A. Eliason, Terryl L. Givens
BYU Studies
Through revelation, our knowledge of the Lord’s creations and his plan for us is gloriously multifaceted, and ever increasing. Revealed truth continually pushes back darkness, opening our eyes to ever-more expansive vistas. Joseph Smith’s revelations often came as answers to questions that occurred to him in the context of his current state of knowledge. But as insight increases, it may seem that each answered question precipitates three more. This is the natural condition for followers of a religion of continuing revelation.
Understandings Of The Relationship Between Grace And Works, Terryl L. Givens
Understandings Of The Relationship Between Grace And Works, Terryl L. Givens
BYU Studies
No debate more thoroughly sunders the Christian world into competing factions than the simple question, Are we saved by grace or by works? It needs to be stated at the outset, however, that the framing of the debate in such terms is not truly accurate. Sola gratia, or salvation by grace alone, is one of the pillars of Protestantism. No one, on the other hand, affirms a doctrine of salvation by works. (Pelagians might have in the fifth century, but they are no longer alive to be part of the conversation.) The debate is really over the question, Are …
Book Of Mormon Geographies, Andrew H. Hedges
Book Of Mormon Geographies, Andrew H. Hedges
BYU Studies
Of the many unresolved issues facing members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today, perhaps none has generated as much speculation and controversy as the question regarding where, exactly, the events recorded in the Book of Mormon took place. Beginning in Joseph Smith’s lifetime and continuing to the present, scholars and interested members alike have offered a variety of possible locations for the more prominent places mentioned in the text, including the city of Zarahemla, the “narrow neck of land” (Ether 10:20), the river Sidon, and the site of the last battle between the Nephites and the …

A Church Educator’S Guide To Identifying And Helping The Scrupulous Student, Debra Theobald Mcclendon
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Educators in the Church Educational System teach gospel doctrines and knowledge of the scriptures and also counsel students about personal issues such as strengthening testimony, learning how to receive personal revelation, working through difficult family or social circumstances, and solving specific issues in their lives. This often creates bonds of trust with students and students will often approach teachers with their intimate spiritual and temporal concerns.
Was Jesus Married?, Christopher James Blythe
Was Jesus Married?, Christopher James Blythe
BYU Studies
While the belief that Jesus was married during his lifetime has been popular among Church leaders and lay members since the nineteenth century, it has never been an essential of Latter-day Saint theology. Rather, belief in a married Christ prospered in the early decades of the Church with little controversy among members, until leaders in the early twentieth century discouraged its public discussion while never disparaging the concept. A century later, as FAIR, an independent apologetic think tank, states on its website, “Some [Latter-day Saints] believe that He was married; others believe He wasn’t. Most members are open to believe …
What Is The Nature Of God’S Progress?, Matthew Bowman
What Is The Nature Of God’S Progress?, Matthew Bowman
BYU Studies
In the theology of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the question of whether or not God progresses can be separated into two more precise questions, each of which has been the topic of strenuous debate. The first has to do with whether God has always been divine or achieved that state through eons of progression, passing through a humanity much like ours along the way. The second is whether God continues to progress—and crucially, whether that progression is qualitative or simply quantitative: whether God’s progress means that God learns new things and gains new powers or whether …
Using Section 84 To Emphasize The Priesthood Power Of Women, Barbara Morgan Gardner
Using Section 84 To Emphasize The Priesthood Power Of Women, Barbara Morgan Gardner
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
In the October 2019 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson expressed his yearning for the women of the Church to “understand that the restoration of the priesthood is just as relevant to you as a woman as it is to any man.” In the same talk, he invited the women to “gain, understand, and use the power with which you have been endowed” and to “study prayerfully all the truths you can find about priesthood power.” He encouraged the women to study Doctrine and Covenants sections 25, 84, and 107 as a starting point to increase their understanding. He then …
Is God Subject To Or The Creator Of Eternal Law?, James Mclachlan
Is God Subject To Or The Creator Of Eternal Law?, James Mclachlan
BYU Studies
Whether God is subject to law or whether God created all law is a question long debated in priesthood quorums, Relief Society meetings, Gospel Doctrine classes, and around Latter-day Saint dinner tables. Both sides claim the scriptures and the Prophet Joseph Smith. The divide usually lines up with, on one side, Joseph Fielding Smith and Bruce McConkie teaching of God’s power over all things and, on the other, B. H. Roberts, John Widtsoe, and James Talmage seeing God as the revealer of laws that even God must follow. Not only is the question open and unsettled as a matter of …
