An Investigation Of The Formation Constant Of Molecular Silver Chloride Using Ion Exchange Techniques.|Nii.|Pan Investigation Of The Rate Of Precipitation Of Silver Sulfide By Thioacetamide, James W. Pyper

Theses and Dissertations

The first part of this work reports on the investigation of the formation constant of molecular silver chloride using ion exchange techniques. In order to determine the formation constant, it was necessary to develop a method of rinsing the sorbed molecular silver chloride from the resin. It was found that desorption with nitrobenzene would remove the sorbed molecular species. However, the formation constant was not calculated since the nitrobenzene used contained hydrogen ion and chloride ion which removed silver ion as well as the molecular species. In the study of the formation of silver sulfide by the reaction between the …

Three Theories Of Religious Language, Truman G. Madsen Apr 1960

Three Theories Of Religious Language, Truman G. Madsen

BYU Studies

Religious philosophy is often concerned with religious language and its meaning. In this article, the sentence "God sent His Son" is analyzed according to three theories of religious meaning: neo-positivism, neo-symbolism, and neo-Thomism. Each analysis focuses on the term God, the content of "sent His Son," and the translatability and verifiability of the expression. Although the three theories differ, their application to this sentence reveals four points of agreement, or theses. The author examines each thesis in turn and shows that each thesis is steeped in complexity and paradox. The author uses this exercise to question the ultimate value …

The Dead Sea Scrolls–Qumran Calmly Revisited, Lewis M. Rogers Apr 1960

The Dead Sea Scrolls–Qumran Calmly Revisited, Lewis M. Rogers

BYU Studies

At the time of their discovery, the Dead Sea scrolls, like any major archeological find, were a cause for controversy. This article briefly discusses the history of the scrolls' discovery and outlines the contents of the Qumran library. Scholars agree that the authors of the scrolls were probably Essenes, a group that saw themselves as the new Israel in the desert, teaching a pure form of Judaism and awaiting the imminent end of the world. A number of parallels exist between the Qumran community and the early Christian church, including their name, organization, ordinances, and teleological language. However, there are …

The Wages Of Sin In Hawthorne, Marden J. Clark Jan 1959

The Wages Of Sin In Hawthorne, Marden J. Clark

BYU Studies

The loss of innocence as the result of sin is a theme running throughout many of Nathaniel Hawthorne's works. Many of his works look at the consequences of sin in individuals' lives. The most common sins Hawthorne wrote into his stories are intellectual pride and the violation of another's individuality. The author follows these themes through Hawthorne's works showing that the results of sin are suffering, death, further sin, and, occasionally, a partial redemption. As Hawthorne continued to explore these themes in his works, they become increasingly more complex. Hawthorne never conclusively answers his own questions about the wages of …

An Economic Interpretation Of “The Word Of Wisdom”, Leonard J. Arrington Jan 1959

An Economic Interpretation Of “The Word Of Wisdom”, Leonard J. Arrington

BYU Studies

Examining the economic impetus behind the adoption of the Word of Wisdom may give us insights into how the Latter-day Saints became known as a people who abstain from alcohol, tobacco, tea, coffee, and drugs. From the time it was revealed, the Word of Wisdom was considered by many to be good advice and not a requirement for fellowship in the Church. The author explores the economic issues that contributed to making the Word of Wisdom official church policy.
