First-Generation College Students' Transition Experiences After A Bridge Program, Alison Irvine Mcmurry May 2025

First-Generation College Students' Transition Experiences After A Bridge Program, Alison Irvine Mcmurry

Theses and Dissertations

First-generation college students (FGCS) often encounter greater challenges than their peers. Universities offer transition programs like bridge programs, orientations, and advising, but service gaps contribute to FGCS difficulties. Bridge programs are often implemented for specific student groups that the university believes to be at-risk or more vulnerable than their peers. Targeted students are asked to come to campus early for additional training, education, and advising. The program is thought to bridge the gap between what they know and what they need to know to be college-ready and on-level with their peers. This case study examines the transition experiences of seven …

Poverty In Association To Academic Achievement In Children, Sara Tolley

Family Perspectives

This paper explores the impact of poverty on academic achievement in children. It begins by outlining the general effects of poverty before delving into its specific consequences for educational outcomes. Findings indicate that poverty significantly affects self-esteem and family relationships, which, in turn, contribute to lower academic performance among children. Additionally, the paper proposes underlying causes for these outcomes and potential interventions. These insights are supported by a diverse range of data, highlighting the urgent need to address this critical issue.

The Relationship Between Immigration And Academic Achievement In Hispanic Children, Jasmine Selph

Family Perspectives

This literature review explores the relationship between immigration and academic achievement among Hispanic immigrant children in the United States, focusing on the impacts of immigration trauma and poverty. With immigration levels reaching record highs, Hispanic immigrant children face unique challenges that significantly influence their educational outcomes. Research highlights the profound effects of immigration trauma, including familial separation, violence, and insecurity, which manifest in physical, emotional, and cognitive difficulties that hinder academic performance. Additionally, poverty compounds these challenges, creating barriers to educational success through limited resources, language acquisition difficulties, and intergenerational cycles of disadvantage. The review also examines the roles of …

Suicidal Ideation Of Queer Adolescents, Haley Kamikawa May 2025

Suicidal Ideation Of Queer Adolescents, Haley Kamikawa

Family Perspectives

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in youth ages 15-29 around the world. This literature review examines some of the reasons why adolescents are likely to experience suicidal ideation and emphasizes why queer adolescence are at a much greater risk for suicidal ideation (Li Kitts, 2005; McDermott et al., 2018; Wichstrøm & Hegna, 2003). Bullying and lack of parental support were found to be the greatest contributors for queer adolescence experiencing suicidal ideation (Czyz et al., 2018; Sultana et al., 2023; Wedell, 2024). Bullying and lack of parental acceptance has been found to increase levels of emotional distress …

Parental Media Moderation: How Parents Can Help Their Children Navigate Digital Media, Allison Rowberry May 2025

Parental Media Moderation: How Parents Can Help Their Children Navigate Digital Media, Allison Rowberry

Family Perspectives

This essay explores the impact of electronic media on children’s behavior and the critical role of parental mediation in shaping media consumption. With nearly universal access to mobile and touchscreen technology among adolescents, excessive media use has become a pressing concern, often exceeding the recommended limits set by the American Academy of Pediatrics (e.g., Gentile et al., 2012). The literature review investigates three primary parental mediation styles: restrictive mediation, active mediation, and co-viewing, each with distinct implications for child development. Restrictive mediation sets limits on content and time, potentially fostering negative outcomes when autonomy is disregarded. Active mediation emphasizes open …

Diagnostic Accuracy Of Nonword Repetition Tasks For Dual Language Learners And Monolingual Students, Elizabeth Hunt May 2025

Diagnostic Accuracy Of Nonword Repetition Tasks For Dual Language Learners And Monolingual Students, Elizabeth Hunt

Theses and Dissertations

Assessments for diagnosing language disorders (LD) can be biased for dual language learners (DLLs). Nonword repetition (NWR) tasks show potential as a less-biased language assessment measure for DLLs. This study explored the diagnostic accuracy of NWR tasks for diagnosing LD. There were 291 participants included in this study in first through fifth grades. Thirty-nine of the participants had LD and 86 of the participants were DLLs. Sixteen of the participants were DLLs and had LD. Monolingual participants were administered an English NWR task, and DLLs were administered both English and Spanish NWR tasks. These tasks were scored by percent phonemes …

Leading The Way: Preparing School Psychologists In Postsecondary Transition Training, Kaiya Joy Dawson May 2025

Leading The Way: Preparing School Psychologists In Postsecondary Transition Training, Kaiya Joy Dawson

Theses and Dissertations

Students with disabilities face significant challenges in achieving postsecondary success, yet training on postsecondary transition planning within school psychology graduate programs remains limited. A content analysis of 252 accredited school psychology programs in the United States revealed major gaps in transition training, with only 1.6% of programs covering all critical domains. Results indicated that 67% of programs include some transition training in at least one domain. Family engagement (42%) and program structure (30%) had the most training, then interagency collaboration (20%), student focused planning (3%) and student development (6%). Notably, programs with larger cohort sizes were correlated with more transition …

Prosodic Pitch And Intensity Patterns In People With Moderate Broca's Aphasia, Juliana Pickard May 2025

Prosodic Pitch And Intensity Patterns In People With Moderate Broca's Aphasia, Juliana Pickard

Theses and Dissertations

People with aphasia (PWA) experience deficits in utilizing prosody, which drastically impacts their communicative effectiveness. The lack of prosody in people with aphasia may alter their ability to nurture meaningful relationships, advance educational and work opportunities, and participate in community activities. This study acoustically evaluates the prosodic characteristics of speech produced by individuals with non-fluent aphasia to better understand how to accurately assess and more effectively treat communication difficulties in PWA. Recorded speech samples derived from a Cinderella story retell from 16 individuals with moderate Broca's aphasia and 16 age-matched controls were acoustically analyzed in this study. The recordings were …

Connecting With Our Creator: How Experiences In Nature Enable Closeness With God, Elsa Longhurst May 2025

Connecting With Our Creator: How Experiences In Nature Enable Closeness With God, Elsa Longhurst

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Experiences in nature allow individuals to connect with God powerfully. Many researchers have considered the benefits of nature (Fredrickson & Anderson, 1999; Louv, 2008; Unsworth et al., 2016), but few have studied the potential for nature to help individuals connect with Deity (Naor & Mayseless, 2020). The present study seeks to understand how nature can help people have a deeper connection to God, considering both vertical and horizontal spirituality (Krauss & Silver, 2021). Participants felt that spending time in nature strengthened their conviction that God is the creator of all things. Many participants shared that being outside allowed them to …

Untethered Isoperimetric Robotic Truss For Lunar Applications, Mihai Stanciu, Spencer Stowell, Isaac Weaver, Adam Rose, Chris Paul, James Wade, Ashleigh Cerven, Annie O'Bryan, Brian Bodily, Logan Yang, Nathan Usevitch

Faculty Publications

We introduce a robotic system designed to function as a lightweight, modular, and reconfigurable structure on the Moon. This robust system consists of truss-like robotic triangles, each formed by a continuous inflated fabric tube routed through two robotic roller units and a connecting unit. When deflated, these triangles can be compacted to roughly the volume of the roller units, offering an advantageous stowed-to-deployed volume ratio of 1 to 6.24. Upon inflation, the roller units pinch the tubes, creating corners by reducing the bending stiffness of the tube. Once fully deployed, electric motors move the robotic roller units along the tube, …

Stuck In Enilikos: Growing Up In Young Adult And Middle Grade Literature, Aubrey Parry Apr 2025

Stuck In Enilikos: Growing Up In Young Adult And Middle Grade Literature, Aubrey Parry

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the theme of growing up in young adult and middle grade literature, specifically how various authors deal with this theme through the decisions their characters make or are given and through the actions the characters take. I’ve looked at these decisions and actions in ten popular middle grade and young adult novels, assuming that if they are popular, the middle grade and young adult readers likely have connected with something in those novels. Young adult and middle grade readers often deal with similar issues in their personal process of growing up, so many authors use their stories …

Insights Into Cortical Organization And Executive Dysfunction In Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, Madeleine Reading Apr 2025

Insights Into Cortical Organization And Executive Dysfunction In Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, Madeleine Reading

Theses and Dissertations

Cortical gyrification is essential for cognitive development, yet its relationship with executive functioning (EF) in pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains unclear. This study examined whether children with TBI exhibit atypical cortical folding in EF-related regions and whether these differences relate to EF performance. Using FreeSurfer 7.1.1, we analyzed local gyrification index (LGI) in 206 participants (ages 5-18) from 14 sites within the ENIGMA Pediatric msTBI Working Group. Vertex-wise regression revealed that longer time since injury (TSI) was associated with increased gyrification in the right fusiform gyrus and multiple left-hemisphere regions, suggesting region-specific neuroplasticity. Contrary to expectations, higher GCS scores …

Deportations And Latino Segregation: The Residential Impacts Of Interior Immigration Enforcement, Matthew Hall, Jacob S. Rugh, Hao Liang Apr 2025

Deportations And Latino Segregation: The Residential Impacts Of Interior Immigration Enforcement, Matthew Hall, Jacob S. Rugh, Hao Liang

Faculty Publications

The shift of immigration enforcement to local jurisdictions has intensified localized patterns of anti-immigrant sentiment, enabling the system of mass deportation to expand at an unprecedented scale. This study examines the effects of 287 (g) agreements, which empower local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws, on Latino residential segregation. Using a quasi-experimental design that compares counties implementing 287 (g) with those that applied but did not implement, we find that these policies significantly slowed declines in Hispanic-white segregation, particularly in early-adopting Southern counties where enforcement was most aggressive. We find no evidence that the program altered patterns of segregation for …

The Effect Of Lexical Characteristics On Speech Pausing For People With Broca's Aphasia, Anna Kathryn Walker Smith Apr 2025

The Effect Of Lexical Characteristics On Speech Pausing For People With Broca's Aphasia, Anna Kathryn Walker Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the connection between speech pause patterns and the lexical characteristics of the words that follow. Speech samples of 16 people with moderate Broca's aphasia and 16 age-matched neurologically healthy controls were evaluated in terms of word length, word frequency in the English language, syntactic category, and articulatory complexity. In general, people with aphasia (PWA) produced pauses more frequently before monosyllabic, very high frequency words with lower articulatory complexity, most of which were content words. The length of these pauses did not significantly correlate with any of the lexical factors examined in this study. The control group had …

Hybrid Bermudagrass Drought Tolerance In A Cool-Season Climate, Ashley J. Beazer Apr 2025

Hybrid Bermudagrass Drought Tolerance In A Cool-Season Climate, Ashley J. Beazer

Theses and Dissertations

Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) (KBG) is the most commonly grown cool-season C3 turfgrass. However, as global temperatures rise, KBG struggles to tolerate higher temperatures, leading to increased irrigation demands--a growing concern in arid and semi-arid regions facing escalating drought conditions. In contrast, hybrid bermudagrass (HBG; Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers. x Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt Davy), a warm-season C4 grass, has demonstrated promising adaptability in traditionally cool-season climates. Since 2008, HBG has been successfully grown with minimal winterkill in Provo, UT, USA, and is now being considered for broader adoption in similar climates. Two separate studies were conducted to evaluate the …
