Playing With Power: Amplifying Personal Power By Managing Your Image, Aaron J. Adams Nov 2024

Playing With Power: Amplifying Personal Power By Managing Your Image, Aaron J. Adams

Marriott Student Review

Power is an interesting subject. For how many Emmy Award-winning television shows we make about it, few understand the fundamental nature of how power is acquired—and there’s the rub: power isn’t acquired, it’s granted. The ability to influence another person hinges on how much they allow you to influence them. Therefore, your power is determined by how much other people are willing to give you, which they decide by how they perceive you. And people’s perception of you is shaped by how you communicate.

Exceptional Experiences Equal Content Customers, Brenna Black Nov 2024

Exceptional Experiences Equal Content Customers, Brenna Black

Marriott Student Review

Would you rather spend money on a designer bag or on a trip to Hawaii? According to University of Texas marketing and psychology professor Amit Kumar, “People derive more satisfaction from experiential purchases than material purchases.” Experiences carry meaning. In today’s society, people are willing to pay a significant amount of money to have a better experience. Customers are no longer satisfied with simply receiving a product or service; the process involved in receiving a product or service matters more than ever.

More Than A Cashier: Making Space For Neurodivergent Individuals In The Workplace, Abby Ebert Nov 2024

More Than A Cashier: Making Space For Neurodivergent Individuals In The Workplace, Abby Ebert

Marriott Student Review

Most people know someone – a friend, a sibling, a schoolmate, or otherwise – who has autism, down-syndrome, Asperger’s, or is otherwise on the spectrum. These individuals likely function mostly normal, but have an especially hard time in social situations coming off as awkward, uncomfortable, or nervous. Thinking of a friend of yours in this situation, what future do you see for them? Knowing them as individuals had you thinking of cool careers that would fit their personality – an engineer, programmer, or lawyer. However, people belonging to this demographic find themselves unemployed or in low entry-level positions, such as …

King Lear'S "Poor, Bare, Forked Animal" And The Cross, Paul J. Stapleton Nov 2024

King Lear'S "Poor, Bare, Forked Animal" And The Cross, Paul J. Stapleton

Quidditas

In William Shakespeare’s tragedy, King Lear describes the “unaccommodated man” as a “poor, bare, forked animal.” Lear’s comments are ostensibly about Edgar disguised as Poor Tom, but critics have detected in the passage a more general expression about human nature. The term “forked” is regularly glossed as “two-legged,” but there are philological problems with this reading. This paper, therefore, takes into consideration an alternate meaning for “forked” based on sixteenth-century usages that relate the noun “fork” to instruments of torture. The paper discusses the depiction of the cross as a “fork” (Latin – furca) in the antiquarian Justus Lipsius’s …

Mobility In The Middle Ages - Literary Evidence As A Mental Map For Travel Imaginations: A Critical Reconsideration Of Modern Myths About The Past, Albrecht Classen Nov 2024

Mobility In The Middle Ages - Literary Evidence As A Mental Map For Travel Imaginations: A Critical Reconsideration Of Modern Myths About The Past, Albrecht Classen

Quidditas

Literary fantasy has often served as a meaningful reflection of historical, material, or political developments, and events. This also applies to many works from the European Middle Ages. While popular opinion continues to assume that most medieval people were home-bound, the very opposite can almost be claimed, especially for the late Middle Ages. After the Crusades, the stream of pilgrims to the Holy Land grew tremendously, but many other people were on the roads as well, whether for economic, religious, or political reasons. Constructive contacts between West and East only developed in the course in time, but the basic foundations …

Four Swiss At Fort Laramie, Jocelyn Moore Nov 2024

Four Swiss At Fort Laramie, Jocelyn Moore

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Starting as a frontier fur trade post in the 1830’s, Fort Laramie, Wyoming Territory, played a prominent role in western expansion. Purchased by the United States government in 1849, the fort’s location near immigrant trails and Native American homelands provided a front row seat to American history. It is estimated that over three hundred thousand people passed the fort during their migration westward. Of the multitude, many were Swiss, including Private Jacob Haudenschild, Sergeant Leodegar Schnyder, Dr. Rudolph B. Hitz and Captain Alfred von Wattenwyl.

Medieval Hypebeast: The Conspicuous Consumption Of Joan I Of Aragon, Jonathan Seyfried Nov 2024

Medieval Hypebeast: The Conspicuous Consumption Of Joan I Of Aragon, Jonathan Seyfried

Quidditas

Limited releases, celebrity culture, and insane profit margins: these features define the hypebeast phenomenon of the early twenty-first century. The rise and fall of this cycle of conspicuous consumption bears remarkable resemblance to the craze for French culture in the Crown of Aragon in the late fourteenth century. King Joan I, starting from the time of his youth as the Duke of Girona, funded several projects to import French culture. In 1380, Joan married Violante de Bar, niece of the French King Charles V and the Duc de Berry. Once Joan and Violante ascended to the throne, they co-created a …

Efficacy Of Complexity-Based Target Selection For Treating Morphosyntactic Deficits In Children With Developmental Language Disorder And Children With Down Syndrome: A Single-Case Experimental Design, Kirsten M. Hannig Russell, Julie L. Wambaugh, John L. Davis, Sean M. Redmond Nov 2024

Redmond

Faculty Publications

Purpose: Selecting targets for morphosyntactic intervention is a critical compo-nent of treatment planning. The complexity approach suggests that, by treating a complex morphosyntactic target, improvements will occur for the treated structure and for related, simpler structures. This study evaluated the efficacy of the complexity approach for treating morphosyntactic deficits by targeting a complex BE verb question structure for children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and children with Down syndrome (DS) and observing its impact on treated and untreated BE verb structures. We also explored whether etiology impacted our participants’ treatment responses.

Method: Three participants with DLD and three with DS …

Beyond Boundaries: Evaluating Bl/Yaoi Subject Headings In Academic Library Classification, Cecilia Zhang Oct 2024

Beyond Boundaries: Evaluating Bl/Yaoi Subject Headings In Academic Library Classification, Cecilia Zhang

Journal of East Asian Libraries

This study critically evaluates the effectiveness of the newly established Library of Congress Subject Headings, "Boys' Love (Gay Erotica)" and "Yaoi (Gay Erotica)," in classifying and facilitating the retrieval of information related to these genres. By examining the complex history of these terms within fan communities in Japan, China, and Korea across different historical periods, this research argues that the current LCSH oversimplifies the genre's rich cultural context and ongoing innovation, creating barriers to effective information retrieval and access. Additionally, the use of the term "Gay Erotica" is misaligned with the nuanced nature of BL/Yaoi, further complicating its classification. This …

Structural Social Determinants And Pacific Islanders' Attitudes Toward Psychological Help Seeking, Abigail Elizabeth Norton Oct 2024

Structural Social Determinants And Pacific Islanders' Attitudes Toward Psychological Help Seeking, Abigail Elizabeth Norton

Theses and Dissertations

Pacific Islanders (PIs) report encountering various structural barriers to seeking mental health services. This study aimed to: (a) Evaluate the relationship between structural social determinants of health (SSDH) and attitudes toward help seeking, and (b) Test the mediating role of value and need in seeking treatment on demographic characteristics and openness to seeking professional help. A total of 129 participants (69% female) aged 18–74 (Mage = 34.33, SD = 12.73) completed questionnaires assessing SSDH barriers, demographic characteristics, and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Descriptive analyses, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling were performed. We found that being unable …

Automation, Improvement, And Sensitivity Analysis Of 3d Parameterized Maize Stalk Models, Joseph Steven Carter Oct 2024

Automation, Improvement, And Sensitivity Analysis Of 3d Parameterized Maize Stalk Models, Joseph Steven Carter

Theses and Dissertations

Maize is the most grown crop in the world. Each year, 5% of maize is lost due to a phenomenon known as stalk lodging (breakage of the stalk below the ear). One of the most promising solutions to stalk lodging is to design stalks with superior geometry to increase stalk strength. Researchers have developed a 3D parameterized maize stalk model, but these models take a long time to structurally analyze and are missing important material properties. This thesis addressed these problems by developing an automated package for analyzing the 3D parameterized maize stalk model, and by measuring the longitudinal shear …
