Implementation Of An Api For And The Folding Of Fpga Routing Resource Graphs In Vtr, Ethan Steiner Rogers Apr 2022

Implementation Of An Api For And The Folding Of Fpga Routing Resource Graphs In Vtr, Ethan Steiner Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

FPGAs provide parallel computing that is fit for speeding up the computation of a large range of problems. Programming an FPGA involves a complex tool flow for which several CAD tools have been developed. These tools compute solutions to many problems such as packing, placement, and routing, which map a circuit design onto an FPGA. These computations require a great deal of memory, of which the Routing Resource Graph contributes the most of any individual data structure. If the RRGraph could be represented in a more compact manner, performance of the tool flow algorithms may be improved due to an …

Parametric Models Of Maize Stalk Morphology, Michael Alan Ottesen Apr 2022

Parametric Models Of Maize Stalk Morphology, Michael Alan Ottesen

Theses and Dissertations

As the most produced grain crop world-wide, 5% of corn is lost due to stalk lodging (above-ground structural failure of the stalk near the roots). Current modeling methods lack the ability to manipulate the stalk architecture. In contrast, parameterized models enable advanced analyses such as sensitivity and optimization studies. This thesis advances previous work on a parameterized cross-sectional model of maize stalk morphology and investigates the validity of a parameterized three-dimensional model. The parameterized cross-sectional model is based upon previous work that approximated the cross-section of maize stalks using an ellipse plus principal components. Validation of the cross-sectional model was …

Sub-Grain Characterization Of Slip Activity In Bcc Tantalum, Tristan Kirby Russell Apr 2022

Sub-Grain Characterization Of Slip Activity In Bcc Tantalum, Tristan Kirby Russell

Theses and Dissertations

BCC metals are commonly used throughout the world and understanding their deformation behavior, especially at the sub-grain level, is essential for their continued use in technological advancements. Correctly and confidently characterizing the active slip systems in BCC materials has been a difficult task throughout past research. The research described in this thesis utilizes high resolution digital image correlation (HRDIC) and relative displacement ratio (RDR) analysis to accurately characterize active slip systems in large grained BCC tantalum and provides new insights into dislocation nucleation sites, relative CRSS values for {110} and {112} slip systems, the correlation between GB transmission factors and …

Flexural Strength And Behavior Of Timber-Concrete Composite Floors With Hexagonally Headed Self-Tapping Screw Shear Connectors, Benjamin David Arrington Apr 2022

Flexural Strength And Behavior Of Timber-Concrete Composite Floors With Hexagonally Headed Self-Tapping Screw Shear Connectors, Benjamin David Arrington

Theses and Dissertations

Timber-concrete composite (TCC) floor systems consist of a bottom layer of wood that is connected to a top layer of concrete using shear connectors. The shear connectors resist slip between the layers, thus allowing wood and concrete develop composite action when subjected to flexure. The objective of this study is to determine the flexural strength and behavior of TCC floor systems that consist of a cross laminated timber wood layer connected to a concrete top layer using hexagonally headed self-tapping screw shear connectors. To accomplish the objective, coupon specimens and full-scale TCC floor panels were tested, and a finite element …

Developing The Next Generation Of Heterogeneous Catalysts: Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films And Their Derivatives, Hans Christian Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are an important class of materials that are gaining increasing relevance for many fields including energy storage, CO2 capture, photovoltaics, and catalysis. MOF mediated synthesis (MOFMS) is the decomposition of a MOF to form an amorphous carbon material decorated with metal nanoparticles. MOF thin films are an area where MOFMS has not been thoroughly explored, yet they are likely to be industrially relevant due to their potential application as highly dispersed, sinter resistant supported catalysts. In this work, we have developed a method for the growth of copper- and zinc-based MOF thin films on silicon- and aluminum- …

On The Development And Use Of A Micro-Surface Probe For Measurement Of Li-Ion Battery Electrical Properties, John Eric Vogel Apr 2022

On The Development And Use Of A Micro-Surface Probe For Measurement Of Li-Ion Battery Electrical Properties, John Eric Vogel

Theses and Dissertations

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are a staple of modern society, providing power to a significant portion of the world's electronics and rapidly replacing older power sources. The advent of widely available electric cars with batteries of up to 200 kWh, with an increasing emphasis on fast charging, has only increased their importance. Lithium-ion battery electronic and ionic properties are largely determined by the microstructure of the battery electrode film and can be heavily influenced by relatively small variations in film makeup, including the formation of voids or distribution of carbon and binder. Prior to this research, electrical properties, which are some …

Optical Observation Of Large Area Projection Sintering, Derek Black Apr 2022

Optical Observation Of Large Area Projection Sintering, Derek Black

Theses and Dissertations

Polymer powder bed fusion (PBF/P) is one of many additive manufacturing (AM) processes utilized for producing polymer parts from digital 3D models. AM is preferred over traditional manufacturing methods in many applications due to advantages including tool-less manufacturing, high geometric complexity, short lead times, and reduced material waste. However, many industries that stand to benefit the most from AM are limited in their ability to use AM parts in large part due to low confidence in AM part quality. Among the polymer AM processes, PBF/P processes show significant promise for these applications due to their comparatively high isotropy and mechanical …

The Drowned Cities, Ship Breaker #2, Emma Patton

Children's Book and Media Review

In the harsh world of the Drowned Cities, it’s difficult to remember what it means to be human. Malia and Mouse are both refugees under the care of a kind doctor, who is teaching Malia his craft. Though Malia and Mouse aren’t related, they take care of each other like siblings would. One day, they stumble across a dying half-man named Tool as they're walking through the jungle. Half-men were engineered by scientists to be nearly unbeatable opponents in the wars. Since half-men aren’t even human, it’s unthinkable to consider negotiating with him. After all, his only instincts are for …

Motion Analysis Of Physical Human-Human Collaboration With Varying Modus, Seth Michael Freeman Apr 2022

Motion Analysis Of Physical Human-Human Collaboration With Varying Modus, Seth Michael Freeman

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the existence of robots that are capable of lifting heavy loads, robotic assistants that can help people move objects as part of a team are not available. This is because of a lack of critical intelligence that results in inefficient and ineffective performance of these robots. This work makes progress towards improved intelligence of robotic lifting assistants by studying human-human teams in order to understand basic principles of co-manipulation teamwork. The effect of modus, or the manner in which a team moves an object together, is the primary study of this work. Data was collected from over 30 human-human …

Implementation Of An Automated Grading Tool For Phonetic Transcription Training, Marisha Speights Atkins, Dallin J. Bailey, Cheryl D. Seals Apr 2022

Implementation Of An Automated Grading Tool For Phonetic Transcription Training, Marisha Speights Atkins, Dallin J. Bailey, Cheryl D. Seals

Faculty Publications

Clinical phonetic transcription is regarded as a highly specialised skill requiring hours of practice for mastery. Although this skill is a critical part of students’ clinical preparation to become speech-language pathologists, students often report feeling unprepared to apply the skill in clinical practice. Previous studies suggest that increased opportunities for practice and timely feedback on transcriptions are needed in order to develop skill confidence. However, providing more opportunities for practice can be impeded by the limited resources to manage the grading of additional assignments. The purpose of this study is to show the implementation of a web-based learning management system …

Hybrid Suspension Tissue Engineering Of A 3d Alveolar Model For Lung And Vascular Disease Modeling, Jonard Corpuz Valdoz Apr 2022

Hybrid Suspension Tissue Engineering Of A 3d Alveolar Model For Lung And Vascular Disease Modeling, Jonard Corpuz Valdoz

Theses and Dissertations

Tissue engineering is a dichotomy of scaffold-based and scaffold-free cultures. Scaffold-based cultures form highly organotypic structures but with low uniformity and throughput. Conversely, scaffold-free cultures create consistently sized and shaped cell aggregates with limited spheroid-like structure and function, thus restricting their use for accurate disease modeling. We hypothesized that combining aspects of each culturing format, we would produce highly organotypic structures of consistent size and shape for use in pulmonary modeling. First, to improve on culture consistency and output, we created a novel easily scalable, minimalistic design for a micropatterned hydrogel dish that increases reliability and efficiency in 3D cell …

The North American Beaver (Castor Canadensis) Is Recolonizing The Llano Estacado, Garret D. Langlois, Robert D. Cox, Philip S. Gipson, Richard D. Stevens

Western North American Naturalist

Five millennia ago, the North American beaver (Castor canadensis) was extirpated from the Southern High Plains by droughts. Beaver were found to be largely absent from the Llano Estacado, despite exhaustive search efforts. Here we report the first definitive evidence of an extant C. canadensis population recolonizing the Llano Estacado. We further provide some spatiotemporal background information about beaver colonization along the North Fork of the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River.

Forty-Five Years Later: Redefining And Reclassifying Computer Code Under The Copyright Act Of 1976, Trevor Oldham, Topher Hill Apr 2022

Forty-Five Years Later: Redefining And Reclassifying Computer Code Under The Copyright Act Of 1976, Trevor Oldham, Topher Hill

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Congress passed the Copyright Act of 1976 more than 45 years ago. However, despite the foresight to include a definition for computer code in the original version of the Act, the definition Congress provided has proven difficult for courts to interpret. This article proposes a new definition of computer code for the Copyright Act, which is not only more inclusive, but also more accurate. It then discusses the direction this new definition provides to the courts and software creators. It also proposes that computer code be granted its own category within the Act, based on the precedent set by the …

Enhancing The Opportunities For Adults With Autism To Find Jobs Using A Job-Matching Algorithm, Joseph T. Bills Apr 2022

Enhancing The Opportunities For Adults With Autism To Find Jobs Using A Job-Matching Algorithm, Joseph T. Bills

Theses and Dissertations

Adults with autism face many difficulties when finding employment, such as struggling with interviews and needing accommodating environments for sensory issues. However, autistic adults also have unique skills to contribute to the workplace that companies have recently started to seek after, such as close attention to detail and trustworthiness. To work around these difficulties and help companies find the talent they are looking for we have developed a job-matching system. Our system is based around the stable matching of the Gale-Shapley algorithm to match autistic adults with employers after estimating how both adults with autism and employers would rank the …

Ghosts’ Stories: Addictive Behaviors And Complicated Grief In George Saunders’ Lincoln In The Bardo, Jc Leishman Apr 2022

Ghosts’ Stories: Addictive Behaviors And Complicated Grief In George Saunders’ Lincoln In The Bardo, Jc Leishman

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

When experiencing the natural motions of the grieving process, some individuals encounter an inability to pass this process by a phenomenon known as complicated grief. To deal with the cyclical trauma this causes, the human mind seeks to engage in addictive behaviors (both substantive and behavioral) that work to artificially and momentarily circumvent grief. This process, as it appears in George Saunders' experimental novel, Lincoln in the Bardo, reveals a depth of commentary on human attachments and grieving processes through the lives and narratives of ghosts found in the bardo.

Narrative Archetypes And Paratextuality: Analysis Of Three Films By Christopher Nolan, Alycia Burnett Mar 2022

Narrative Archetypes And Paratextuality: Analysis Of Three Films By Christopher Nolan, Alycia Burnett

Theses and Dissertations

Nonlinear films display unconventional narratives that leave ambiguous endings that create rewatchability, making audiences want to rewatch and review the films. These films also create conversation on social media outlets and infiltrate discussion on popular culture. This rhetorical analysis examines narrative structure, narrative archetypes, and paratextuality of three nonlinear Christopher Nolan films: Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet. By examining how these different forms of narrative display the moral messaging and structure within each film, this analysis provides context in how nonlinear narratives promote rewatchability and create continuous paratexts. Through Nolan's films, nonlinear film styles create more than rewatchability as Nolan specifically …

Osteoarthritis And Cartilage Insult: Elucidation Of Molecular Interplay And Attempted Interventions, Brandon James Rose Mar 2022

Osteoarthritis And Cartilage Insult: Elucidation Of Molecular Interplay And Attempted Interventions, Brandon James Rose

Theses and Dissertations

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common and incapacitating joint disease beginning with breakdown of articular cartilage and extending into subchondral bone. At present, the processes through which the disease occurs are poorly understood, and interventions are limited to pain relief and eventual joint replacement. OA is commonly associated with obesity and corresponding pathologies, and as OA is demonstrably not a product of passive erosion of cartilage over time or under increased loads there must needs be some other mechanistic link between the two conditions. We hypothesize that the production of ceramides, a hallmark of the insulin resistance syndrome underlying many obesity-related …

U-Splines: Splines Over Unstructured Meshes, Steven K. Schmidt Mar 2022

U-Splines: Splines Over Unstructured Meshes, Steven K. Schmidt

Theses and Dissertations

U-splines are a novel approach to the construction of a spline basis for representing smooth objects in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE). A spline is a piecewise-defined function that satisfies continuity constraints between adjacent cells in a mesh. U-splines differ from existing spline constructions, such as Non-Uniform Rational B-splines (NURBS), subdivision surfaces, T-splines, and hierarchical B-splines, in that they can accommodate local variation in cell size, polynomial degree, and smoothness simultaneously over more varied mesh configurations. Mixed cell types (e.g., triangle and tetrahedron and quadrilateral and hexahedral cells in the same mesh) and T-junctions are also supported. The …

The Use Of Nucleotide Salvage Pathway Enzymes As Suitable Tumor Targets For Antibody-Based And Adoptive Cell Therapies, Edwin J. Velazquez

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the progress made in cancer research, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Although the development of new cancer treatments has improved cancer patients' survival rate, a significant number of patients experience refractory and recurrence events with serious side effects. It is known that the immune system actively participates in eliminating cancer. However, cancer cells can develop mechanisms to evade the immune system resulting in immunotolerance. Immunotherapy aids the patient's immune system's ability to recognize and eliminate cancer cells. During the last three decades, immunotherapy has gradually emerged as an effective and more specific approach to …
