Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis is a highly versatile method of element analysis. Thus it is well suited for use as a complement to other methods of analysis in experimental programs requiring both chemical and elemental analyses. This paper reports some results of two projects where PIXE was used in conjunction with titration calorimetry, ion chromatography, atomic absorption spectroscopy, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and some other methods. The first is a study of sulfur chemistry in a copper smelter plume. Arsenic was found to be a conservative tracer of the plume and was used for calculation of …

Protons and deuterons from the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) tandem Van de Graaff of energies 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 MeV were scattered from foils of Al, Ni, Mo, and Ta having thicknesses of 6.14 to 47 mg/cm2. Multiple scattering angular distributions were measured using a position-sensitive detector to collect data at nine different angles simultaneously. Gaussian curves were fitted to the central points of the distributions and the Θ1/e angles thus derived are presented graphically. The data points are compared with calculations using a common method of determining multiple scattering angles. An empirical correction for extending this method into …

Hydrology And Water Quality Of Utah Lake, Dean K. Fuhriman, Lavere B. Merritt, A. Woodruff Miller, Harold S. Stock
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
This paper summarizes hydrological and water findings from investigations by the authors and their colleagues over the past 10 years.
Water and salt balances on Utah Lake for the July 1970 to July 1973 period show both evaporation (342,077 ac-ft/yr) and groundwater (114,355 ac-ft/yr) to be somewhat larger than previously estimated by others.
The lake is eutrophic, turbid, and slightly saline, as might be expected in a shallow, basin-bottom lake in a semi-arid area. Overall water quality in the lake is fair to good and appears to be controlled more by natural factors than by the activities of man. An …

Geology Of Utah Lake: Implications For Resource Management, Willis H. Brimhall, Lavere B. Merritt
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
Utah Lake is a remnant of Lake Bonneville, from which it originated about 8,000 years ago. Analysis of sediment cores reveals significant variations in lake salinity and sedimentation rates. Notable examples are a very dry, high-salinity period between 5000 and 6000 years ago; a major freshening, wet period between 2700 and 3000 years ago; and a very dry, high-salinity period between 1400 and 2600 years ago, smaller variations are interspersed through the lake's history.
Long-term sedimentation rates are estimated at about 1 mm (0.039 in) per year in most of the lake, but post-colonization rates appear to be about 2 …
Fishes Of Utah Lake, Richard A. Heckmann, Charles W. Thompson, David A. White
Fishes Of Utah Lake, Richard A. Heckmann, Charles W. Thompson, David A. White
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
There has been a drastic change in fish populations inhabiting Utah Lake during the last 100 years. When the pioneers first entered Utah Valley they found a well-established cutthroat trout population in Utah Lake and in the tributaries flowing into the lake. After intensive agricultural and industrial development this salmonid disappeared, and carp, white bass, and black bullhead are the common species today. The known history of the Utah Lake fisheries is summarized. Through proper management it is possible to establish a sport fishery of the common fish species currently in the Lake, including walleye, channel catfish, and largemouth bass. …

"The Church And Colonel Saunders": Mormon Standard Plan Architecture, Martha Sonntag Bradley
Theses and Dissertations
In the years 1920-80 the Mormon Church developed, expanded and refined an architectural program based on the concept of the standard plan. Standard plan buildings were selected, individualized and built for local ward units under the direction of the Church Building Department which created uniform standards of quality and appearance across the worldwide Church and created a tangible link between foreign members and the central Church.
Although functional and financial considerations directed virtually all design decisions and formed the operative basis of the program other elements also determined the nature of the Mormon approach to building. Growth, in the membership, …

Lds Church Educational Objectives And Motivational Influences For Seminary Attendance: A Comparative Analysis, Linda Brockbank
Theses and Dissertations
This study addressed itself to identifying dominant motivational influences prompting seminary attendance of ninth and eleventh grade students living along the Wasatch Front in the state of Utah and to determine if these motivational influences were related to stated objectives of the LDS seminary program. The sample consisted of twelve randomly selected cluster groups of seminary classes from the Ogden, Salt Lake City, and Provo-Orem areas. Factors relative to stated objectives and to entertainment were incorporated in the survey questionnaire, Survey of Attendance Rationale, used for data collection. Data were collected in February 1981 and submitted to factor analysis, …

The American Career Of Henry Bouquet, 1755-1765, Louis M. Waddell
The American Career Of Henry Bouquet, 1755-1765, Louis M. Waddell
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
It has not been our good fortune to experience this afternoon the bright invigorating October day I had anticipated. I wanted to introduce Henry Bouquet by a reference to his reliance on the beautiful October climate as he fearlessly marched fifteen hundred soldiers into dangerous Indian lands in Ohio, in 1764. Bouquet relied on the clear dry weather to speed his march, and on the absence of foliage to protect his men from any surprise attacks like the one that had decimated General Edward Braddock's military column, of roughly the same size, at a crossing of the Monongahela River on …

Auguste Lambelet (1838-1919): A Soldier Of Fortune, Jane H. Dein
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Readers of Mari Sandoz' Old Jules will remember that this enthusiastic pioneer not only helped newcomers to the frontier file claims but also sent off to family, friends and journals a blizzard of letters extolling the rich soil of Nebraska and the free land available to anyone willing to work it. Among the Swiss attracted to Nebraska by this fervent praise was Auguste Lambelet, who gained American citizenship and title to his homestead in Knox County in 1889. While even after forty years of residence in Nebraska, he never learned English, his descendants, many of whom still live in the …

The Bridge
The Danish American Heritage Society has as one of its objectives to "encourage Danish American expression in the arts, humanities, and social sciences." It is to be hoped that the Danish American Heritage Society will have more luck in its endeavors to promote the arts than did another organization with somewhat similar aims. I refer here to Dansk Folkesamfund (Danish People's Society) and the abortive attempt to launch an art committee under its auspices in 1897.
Model For Coal-Fired Reactors, Philip J. Smith, Thomas H. Fletcher, L. Douglas Smoot
Model For Coal-Fired Reactors, Philip J. Smith, Thomas H. Fletcher, L. Douglas Smoot

An axisymmetric, elliptic model has been developed for analysis of confined, turbulent coal-laden diffusion flames. The scheme is Eulerian for gases and Lagrangian for particles. The approach emphasizes the turbulent fluid mechanics of the mixing-limited gas phase reaction processes. The two-equation (k-─ e) turbulence model is used for closure. Particle drag and turbulent particle diffusion are also modeled. Gaseous combustion is modeled with a probability density function for the mixture fraction. Fluctuations in mixing of inlet streams and coal off-gas are considered. Coal pyrolysis and oxidation reaction processes are assumed to be slow with respect to the turbulent time scale. …

Printed Maps Of Utah To 1900: An Annotated Cartobibliography, Riley Moore Moffat
Theses and Dissertations
Old maps are valuable research tools in many fields. Finding and identifying them, however, is often difficult. This annotated cartobibliography attempts to identify all maps of Utah printed before 1900. Entries give the distinguishing features, peculiarities, inaccuracies, and a general description as well as the map's provenance and citations in other lists and bibliographies.
The maps are listed chronologically and include all maps located in research collections in Utah, and in the catalogs of the Library of Congress and the Bancroft Library. Although the first entry is dated 1777, the first map of Utah made from actual observation, earlier maps …

Relationships Among Total Dissolved Solids, Conductivity, And Osmosity For Five Artemia Habitats (Anostraca: Artemiidae), Nicholas C. Collins, Gray Stirling
Great Basin Naturalist
Graphs allowing interconversion between various physical chemical parameters are presented for five Artemia habitats in the western USA. Both the mean osmosity and its typical yearly range differ greatly among habitats. Consequently, Artemia populations provide an interesting opportunity to study physiological and life history adaptations to differing degrees of habitat stability.
