Automatic Meshing Of Free-Form Deformation Solids, Ssuta S. Hsu
Theses and Dissertations
Development of computer models and subsequent finite element analysis, are important aspects of modern engineering design. In this process, the geometry creation and finite element analysis software are well developed; however, the process of discretizing a geometry into a proper finite element model is time consuming and tedious. The work presented here uses the free-form deformation method to create smooth solid models, and invokes a solid subdivision and transition method to generate the hexahedron finite elements. The combination of these two techniques provides an automatic mesh generator that is easy to use, creates acceptable hexahedron elements for finite element analysis, …

The Center for Engineering Design (CED) at the University of Utah has developed a force reflective, teleoperated multiple degree of freedom hand and high mobility wrist. This hand/wrist teleoperation system is targeted to perform dexterous manipulation and assembly tasks in an effort to approach the capabilities of a human. A first-stage prototype of this hand/wrist master/slave system, which is scheduled for laboratory demonstration in February of 1989, has nine actuated degrees of freedom in both the hand master and hand slave. This paper discusses elements of the design of this hand/wrist master and slave with particular emphasis on servo system …

Johannes Knudsen: The Cultural Context Of His Youth, Aage V. Knudsen
Johannes Knudsen: The Cultural Context Of His Youth, Aage V. Knudsen
The Bridge
The editor of The Bridge asked me to describe the early life of Johannes Henrik Vilstrup Knudsen: his childhood in Tyler, Minnesota, his youth in Denmark, and his interaction with Danes and Danish Americans. My brother's life spanned from 1902 to 1982, but it was the cultural context of his youth that molded his character. Many years ago, Johannes presented me with a copy of Danish Rebel, his book about Grundtvig. He inscribed it with these words, "Lest we forget." This expressed his love and the obligation he felt for the rich heritage he received. That heritage became his lodestar.

Harald P. Nielsen Saga, Ivan E. Nielsen
The Bridge
When I was asked to do a history on Harald P. Nielsen in observance of the 100th anniversary of his birth, I envisioned a relatively short sketch. It developed into much more than that. In this paper I have documented, quoted and plagiarized. I hope I have conveyed facts as accurately as possible. I am especially grateful to the following for their contributions: Vagn Duus, Inga Kroman-Kelly, Ove Nielsen, Viggo Nielsen, and Emerald Swenson.

Gaining A Measure Of Success, Walter Angst

In the spring of 1943, I was able to win a job with a large firm at the Zlirich branch of the "Therma" company. The main plant was in Schwanden, Canton Glarus, and produced electrical bakery ovens, household stoves, as well as refrigerators and air conditioning systems. I was hired as a heliographist, for the copying of technical drawings. Very soon I advanced phenomenally within the firm and for eight years I worked in various positions. I served in the office of chief engineer, kept the time-clock records, did the payroll, supervised the travels of the service personnel, and administered …

Once I had a job at the Smithsonian Institution, I had to wait a whole year until my position opened, in January of 1968, and even then my position had first to be approved by Congress as at that time there was a hiring-freeze. I got hired as a "specialist for restoration" with Exhibits. We were a department of two people out of about 800. In order to justify my grade, I passed a mid-level exam, which was rather tough, as it was meant to be administered to generals, admirals, high level administrators, and Ph.Ds. Gordon, my supervisor, had difficulties …

Enduring Apprenticeships, Walter Angst
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Since I was two years older than my school chums and knew that I could not afford to go on to higher education, I quit secondary school after the second year. My dream was to become a graphic artist, devising posters. My father was afraid for me: if I would indulge in an artist's life, I surely would go to pot! He proposed instead that I learn the trade of a barber or, as a concession, a cabinet-maker. Consequently, I was apprenticed to a master cabinetmaker who promptly dismissed me after a few weeks as being too weak. After a …

The gamut of futuristic visions in library literature—from optimistic to pessimistic, from realistic to fanciful. Contradictory answers to recurring questions are found: Can we finally say goodbye to Gutenberg? Will the library card be replaced by the telephone credit card? Will book ownership give way entirely to information access. Will "books without pages" and "libraries without walls" necessarily lead to librarians without jobs? Is it possible to set timetables? After past crystal ball gazers are compared, contrasted, and critiqued, positive plans for progress are suggested.
