Set-Valued Filtering And Smoothing, Wynn C. Stirling, Darryl Morrell Feb 1991

Set-Valued Filtering And Smoothing, Wynn C. Stirling, Darryl Morrell

Faculty Publications

A theory of discrete-time optimal filtering and smoothing based on convex sets of probability distributions is presented. Rather than propagating a single conditional distribution as does conventional Bayesian estimation, a convex set of conditional distributions is evolved. For linear Gaussian systems, the convex set can be generated by a set of Gaussian distributions with equal covariance with means in a convex region of state space. The conventional point-valued Kalman filter is generated to a set-valued Kalman filter consisting of equations of evolution of a convex set of conditional means and a conditional covariance. The resulting estimator is an exact solution …

Meta M. Hedemann: From 1878

The Bridge

I have often been asked, "Why did you and your husband leave Denmark and go so far away . .. adventuring?" We did not go adventuring. My husband was offered a position with a Mr. Unna, an old friend of his father's, who owned a sugar plantation on the island of Maui, one of the Sandwich Islands, as Hawaii was called at that time. Mr. Unna wanted to improve, rearrange, or maybe even build a new sugar factory. He had heard much about a very big, modem sugar mill on one of the islands of the West Indies, which had …

A Median-Filter-Based Ambiguity Removal Algorithm For Nscat, David G. Long, Scott J. Shaffer, R. Scott Dunbar, S. Vincent Hsiao Jan 1991

A Median-Filter-Based Ambiguity Removal Algorithm For Nscat, David G. Long, Scott J. Shaffer, R. Scott Dunbar, S. Vincent Hsiao

Faculty Publications

A description is given of the baseline NSCAT (the NASA scatterometer) ambiguity removal algorithm and the method used to select the set of optimum parameter values. An extensive simulation of the NSCAT instrument and ground data processor provides a means of testing the resulting tuned algorithm. This simulation generates the ambiguous wind-field vectors expected from the instrument as it orbits over a set of realistic mesoscale wind fields. The ambiguous wind field is then de-aliased using the median-filter-based ambiguity removal algorithm. Performance is measured by comparison of the selected wind fields with the true wind fields. Results have shown that …

The Transmittances Of Thin Polymer Films And Their Suitability As A Supportive Substrate For A Soft X-Ray Solar Filter, Memorie Williams, Evan Hansen, A. Reyes-Mena, David D. Allred Jan 1991

The Transmittances Of Thin Polymer Films And Their Suitability As A Supportive Substrate For A Soft X-Ray Solar Filter, Memorie Williams, Evan Hansen, A. Reyes-Mena, David D. Allred

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses soft x-ray filter designs for the Brigham Young University "Goldhelox Project". Three polymers intended for use as a supportive substrate for a soft x-ray solar filter, having a passband centered at 171 angstroms are examined. The use of polymer substrates is examined because of vibrational and mechanical stresses associated with the shuttle launch, preventing the use of a free standing filter, and because of Goldhelox's special need to locate the filter near the imaging plane. The uniform consistency of a polymer support will prevent any imaging of the filter support structure, as would occur if a traditional …

Management Of Endangered Sonoran Topminnow At Bylas Springs, Arizona: Description, Critique, And Recommendations, Paul C. Marsh, W. L. Minckley Oct 1990

Management Of Endangered Sonoran Topminnow At Bylas Springs, Arizona: Description, Critique, And Recommendations, Paul C. Marsh, W. L. Minckley

Great Basin Naturalist

Efforts between 1982 and 1990 have failed to recover and secure three natural populations of endangered Sonoran topminnow (Poeciliopsis o. occidentalis) at Bylas Springs, Arizona. Flooding in the Gila River in 1977–78 allowed ingress by predatory mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), and topminnows began to decline. Since that time (1) one stock has been replaced twice and is again nearly gone because of depredations by mosquitofish that resisted two eradication attempts; (2) topminnows at a second spring were extirpated through vegetation encroachment after fencing to protect the habitat from livestock; and (3) a third population was lost to …

Using The Original Land Survey Notes To Reconstruct Presettlement Landscapes In The American West, S. M. Galatowitsch Jun 1990

Using The Original Land Survey Notes To Reconstruct Presettlement Landscapes In The American West, S. M. Galatowitsch

Great Basin Naturalist

Rectangular surveys completed between 1796 and 1925 by the General Land Office have frequently been used in the eastern and central U.S. to determine land cover prior to European settlement. These survey notes are less often used in the western U.S., although they are the only site-specific presettlement records available in many areas. Recent efforts to restore riparian and grassland habitats require an understanding of the conditions of these sites before settlement. General Land Office Survey notes provide a description of each township, including water supplies, timber resources, and agricultural potential. The width and course of rivers and streams were …

Model-Based Estimation Of Wind Fields Over The Ocean From Wind Scatterometer Measurements. I. Development Of The Wind Field Model, David G. Long, Jerry M. Mendel May 1990

Model-Based Estimation Of Wind Fields Over The Ocean From Wind Scatterometer Measurements. I. Development Of The Wind Field Model, David G. Long, Jerry M. Mendel

Faculty Publications

For pt.II see ibid., vol.28, no.3, p.361-373 (1990). A parametric model for near-surface mesoscale wind fields suitable for use in a model-based approach to estimate the wind field over a large region of the scatterometer measurement swath from measurements of the radar backscatter of the ocean's surface is discussed. The assumptions made in developing the model are described, and the accuracy of the resulting model is evaluated. The model is based only on scatterometer data and is computationally tractable, consisting of a linear equation relating the near-surface wind field to a vector of model parameters which is estimated from the …

Model-Based Estimation Of Wind Fields Over The Ocean From Wind Scatterometer Measurements. Ii. Model Parameter Estimation, David G. Long, Jerry M. Mendel

Faculty Publications

For pt.I see ibid., vol.28, no.3, p.349-360 (1990). The feasibility of a model-based approach to wind field estimation is discussed. In this approach the parametric model for near-surface mesoscale wind fields developed in pt.I is used. The parameters of the model are estimated from the wind scatterometer measurements; the wind field estimate is then computed from the estimated model parameters. Unlike the traditional pointwise approach, this approach takes advantage of the inherent correlation in the winds at different sample points to estimate the wind field more accurately and resolve directional ambiguity. The accuracies of wind field estimates obtained using the …

Developing Positive Attitudes And Approaches When Working With Persons With Disabilities, Romel W. Marckelprang Apr 1990

Developing Positive Attitudes And Approaches When Working With Persons With Disabilities, Romel W. Marckelprang

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

More than ten percent of the population of North America have disabilities or chronic illnesses. Persons who acquire disabilities have many issues to face. Psychosocial adjustment can be difficult as they reconcile losses and explore strengths. Societal attitudes and policies create barriers to full functioning. Latter-day Saints with disabilities many face the additional challenge of reconciling spiritual beliefs with physical reality. This paper addresses the implications of disability and chronic illnesses with special attention to issues unique to Mormonism. Suggestions for professional intervention are provided.

Moral Choices And Their Outcomes, William R. Swinyard, Thomas J. Delong Apr 1990

Moral Choices And Their Outcomes, William R. Swinyard, Thomas J. Delong

BYU Studies

This article examines types of moral decision making through surveying students at Brigham Young University (Christian) and at the National University of Singapore (Buddhist, Hindu, and Moslem). The authors present the moral decision making process in terms of rules with no thought of outcomes and rules that affect outcomes. Results show both cultures have basically the same moral decision-making processes; however, BYU students favored decisions that obeyed the rules or doing the "right" thing; and NUS students favored outcomes, or doing what will benefit the most people.

Influence Of Soil Frost On Infiltration Of Shrub Coppice Dune And Dune Interspace Soils In Southeastern Nevada, Wilbert H. Blackburn, M. Karl Wood Mar 1990

Influence Of Soil Frost On Infiltration Of Shrub Coppice Dune And Dune Interspace Soils In Southeastern Nevada, Wilbert H. Blackburn, M. Karl Wood

Great Basin Naturalist

The influence of soil frost on the infiltration rate of shrub coppice dune and dune interspace soils was evaluated near Crystal Springs, Nevada, using simulated rainfall. The infiltration rate of the coppice dune soil was greater than the dune interspace soil under frozen or unfrozen conditions. Because of different vegetation cover and surface soil characteristics, coppice dune and dune interspace soils responded differently to freezing, thus imposing a spatial and temporal response to infiltration rate. Infiltration rate of soils with porous concrete frost increased as the soils thawed during simulated rainfall, but soils with nonporous concrete frost allowed very little …
