Modeling The Indoor Mimo Wireless Channel, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace
Modeling The Indoor Mimo Wireless Channel, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace
Faculty Publications
This paper demonstrates the ability of a physically based statistical multipath propagation model to match capacity statistics and pairwise magnitude and phase distributions of measured 4 x 4 and 10 x 10 narrow-band multiple-input multiple-output data (MIMO) at 2.4 GHz. The model is compared to simpler statistical models based on the multivariate complex normal distribution with either complex envelope or power correlation. The comparison is facilitated by computing channel element covariance matrices for fixed sets of multipath statistics. Multipolarization data is used to demonstrate a simple method for modeling dual-polarization arrays.

In-Plane Linear-Displacement Bistable Microrelay, Troy Gomm, Larry L. Howell, Richard H. Selfridge
Faculty Publications
This paper investigates the Linear Displacement Bistable Mechanism (LDBM) for use in microrelays. The LDBM, thermal actuators, and contacts are integrated to demonstrate a relay design. The performance of the relay is characterized using relay performance metrics, including size (1.92 mm2), contact force (23.4 μN), switching time (340 μs), breakdown voltage (> 475 V), and isolation (> 235 V). The actuation voltage and current are 11 V and 85 mA, respectively. AC characteristics, including contact-to-contact crosstalk and AC isolation are also measured. The testing results demonstrate that it is feasible to use the LDBM as a microrelay and that it …

Bill Heperi: We're going to have two presentations this evening, it's all about Church history, it's about a lot of the missionaries that came to New Zealand, way back in the early 1900s, Sister Rangi Parker will be our presenter and after half an hour of that we'll follow through with a recess for a moment, and then we'll have John Aspinall, he'll present to you rather interesting pictures of the labor missionary days when they constructed this whole campus, temple, the college, visitor center, and surrounding faculty homes. So without further ado I'm going to ask Sister Rangi Parker …
Special Symposium On Microenterprise Industry In The United States, Jason J. Friedman
Special Symposium On Microenterprise Industry In The United States, Jason J. Friedman
Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review
Delivery of microcredit to operators of small and micro enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries is increasingly being viewed as a strategic means of assisting the so-called "working poor" (ILO, 1973). Over the past decade, a considerable amount of multi- and bilateral aid has been channeled into microfinance programs in the Third World with varying degrees of success. Like all development interventions, donors, governments, and other interested parties demand evaluations and impact assessment studies to ascertain the achievements and failures of these programs. This paper reviews two such studies conducted in Ghana and South Africa that focused mainly on impact results. …
Dealing With Fear And Depression In A 21st-Century Context, Carrie Maxwell Wrigley
Dealing With Fear And Depression In A 21st-Century Context, Carrie Maxwell Wrigley
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
Therapy in the 21st century cannot be guided soley by attention to intra-psychic or intra-familial factors. As the surrounding social and cultural environment continues to become more unstable, threatening, and dangerous, fear and depression become increasingly common, reality-based responses. These reponses are not a surprise to those acquainted with ancient and modern scriptures, which predict times of unprecedented trouble with accompanying widespread terror and despair; and which also identifies an alternative, more healthful response to the context of our current social enviroment. Finally, it articulates what AMCAP and its individual members can do to ""public peace"" in these times of …

Surfacing Splicing: A Method Of Quadrilateral Mesh Generation And Modification For Surfaces By Dual Creation And Manipulation, Benjamin Todd Grover
Surfacing Splicing: A Method Of Quadrilateral Mesh Generation And Modification For Surfaces By Dual Creation And Manipulation, Benjamin Todd Grover
Theses and Dissertations
The effective generation high quality quadrilateral surface meshes is an area of important research and development for the finite element community. Quadrilateral elements generally lead to more efficient and accurate finite results. In addition, some all hexahedral volume meshing algorithms are based on an initial quadrilateral mesh surface mesh that has specific connectivity requirements. This thesis presents a new and unique procedure named "Surfaced Splicing". Surface Splicing allows for the generation of all quadrilateral surface meshes as well as the ability to edit these meshes via the dual. The dual contains the same data as the mesh but, unlike the …

Rapid Heterogeneous Ad Hoc Connection Establishment: Accelerating Bluetooth Inquiry Using Irda, Trevor Clifton, Derek D. Joos, Charles D. Knutson, Ryan W. Woodings
Faculty Publications
Bluetooth device discovery is a time-intensive phase of the Bluetooth connection-establishment procedure. In this paper we propose a technique that integrates existing IrDA technology with Bluetooth technology to improve the ad hoc connection establishment time of Bluetooth devices. We accomplish this improvement by first establishing an IrDA connection between two devices equipped with both Bluetooth and IrDA capabilities and then exchanging Bluetooth device discovery information via the established IrDA connection. As a result of this cooperative exchange, the devices are able to bypass the time-intensive Bluetooth device discovery procedure. Our research shows that IrDA-assisted Bluetooth connection establishment is up to …

Invisible Invasion: Potential Contamination Of Yellowstone Hot Springs By Human Activity, Robert F. Lindstrom, Robert F. Ramaley, Richard L. Weiss Bizzoco
Western North American Naturalist
This report establishes a baseline inventory of microorganisms in acidic hot springs of Yellowstone National Park (YNP). The analysis is based on observations carried out over the past 25 years using light microscopy, DNA staining, and electron microscopy of environmental samples. The inventory, while incomplete in that not all organisms have been cultured or examined using genetic approaches, represents a study of several solfatara (acid sulfate) geyser basins in YNP. We found that the types of microorganisms in flowing springs had changed over time. In contrast, no such changes occurred in mixing pools. We solicited opinions of prominent YNP microbiologists …

Status Of The Preston White River Springfish (Crenichthys Baileyi Albivallis), G. Gary Scoppettone, Peter H. Rissler
Western North American Naturalist
We determined the distribution and estimated population number of Preston White River springfish (Crenichthys baileyi albivallis) in summer 1998 and winter 1999. The total population was <5000 fish persisting in only 4 of 6 spring systems from which it had been previously captured. To improve its status, we recommend conservation measures.

Nest-Site Characteristics Of Burrowing Owls (Athene Cunicularia) In The Snake River Birds Of Prey National Conservation Area, Idaho, And Application To Artificial Burrow Installation, James R. Belthoff, R. Andrew King
Western North American Naturalist
Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) populations are declining in many portions of their range, and research and management efforts into stemming declines are underway. One tool with promise is the artificial burrow, which can supplement nesting opportunities and play a role in research, mitigation, translocation, and reintroduction studies. However, few studies directly assess important burrow and surrounding topographic features upon which owls choose sites and then construct and install artificial burrows accordingly. In this study we (1) measure physical, vegetative, and topographic characteristics of Burrowing Owl nest sites in the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (SRBPNCA); …
Species Richness And California Voles In An Annual And A Perennial Grassland, Jeffrey S. Fehmi, James W. Bartolome
Species Richness And California Voles In An Annual And A Perennial Grassland, Jeffrey S. Fehmi, James W. Bartolome
Western North American Naturalist
Populations of a common burrowing rodent, Microtus californicus (the California vole), thrive in ungrazed or lightly grazed grasslands in coastal California. Two sites ungrazed by livestock, one dominated by native perennial grasses and another dominated by invasive annuals, were evaluated over 2 consecutive years for the relationship between plant species richness and location of M. californicus burrow entrances (burrows). Plant species and burrows were sampled as present or absent in contiguous 1-m2 quadrats on a 100-m2 grid. Quadrats with burrows averaged significantly more plant species than quadrats without them (11.3 vs. 9.9 species, P < 0.001). Burrows found in 1996 were not correlated with species richness in 1995, suggesting that voles affect richness rather than seek it out. Vole burrow locations showed significant clumping on the annual site and trended toward clumping on the perennial site in both 1995 and 1996. Because voles seem to create a clumped pattern with their burrow entrances, the associated increase in plant species richness may have a strong effect on the overall structure of the plant community. A quantitative comparison of the 2 sites showed that the plant matrix of the perennial site contained flora of the annual site. This similarity in plant species composition may allow for similar treatment of our 2 types of sites and potentially other California grasslands. Undetected increases in vole populations with livestock grazing reduction may account for the erratic results from grasslands management research and the inconsistent success of derived management practices.
Effect Of Catalyst Structure On Oxidative Dehydrogenation Of Ethane And Propane On Alumina-Supported Vanadia, Morris D. Argyle, Kaidong Chen, Alexis T. Bell, Enrique Iglesia
Effect Of Catalyst Structure On Oxidative Dehydrogenation Of Ethane And Propane On Alumina-Supported Vanadia, Morris D. Argyle, Kaidong Chen, Alexis T. Bell, Enrique Iglesia
Faculty Publications
The catalytic properties of Al2O3-supported vanadia with a wide range of VOx surface density (1.4-34.2 V/nm2) and structure were examined for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane and propane. UV-visible and Raman spectra showed that vanadia is dispersed predominately as isolated monovanadate species below ~2.3 V/nm2. As surface densities increase, two-dimensional polyvanadates appear (2.3-7.0 V/nm2) along with increasing amounts of V2O5 crystallites at surface densities above 7.0 V/nm2. The rate constant for oxidative dehydrogenation (k1) and its ratio with alkane and alkene combustion (k2/k1 and k3/k1, respectively) were compared for both alkane reactants as a function of vanadia surface density. Propene …

Magnificent Obsession: Switzerland's Role In The Future Of The European Union, H. Dwight Page
Swiss American Historical Society Review
History books generally refer to the golden age of French civilization in the seventeenth century as the Age of Louis XIV or the Age of the Sun King, yet, were there any justice, it would be more appropriate to refer to that historical era as the age of Colbert, for it was Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's minister of finance, whose wise management of the financial machinery of the French state and whose policy of economic self-reliance delivered France from the chaos of the religious and civil wars, stabilized the country and thereby provided the foundation for France's world empire and …

Gis Integration Of Remote Sensing And Electrical Sounding Data For Hydrogeological Exploration
Gis Integration Of Remote Sensing And Electrical Sounding Data For Hydrogeological Exploration
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Interpretation of hydrogeological data frequently involves assimilating information from many sites each with a unique geographical location. Interpretation of these data requires that the spatial location be incorporated into the analysis. Geographic Information System (GIS) can be used efficiently for this purpose where hydrogeological data having different spatial identity can be analyzed objectively using different logical approaches. In the present paper GIS is used for the analysis of hydrogeological data acquired from remote sensing and surface geophysical techniques for the assessment of groundwater condition of a soft rock terrain in Midnapur District, West Bengal, India. Indian Remote Sensing (IRS-1B) LISS-II …
Combining Probability Of Emptiness And Mean First Overflow Time Of A Dam To Determine Its Capacity
Combining Probability Of Emptiness And Mean First Overflow Time Of A Dam To Determine Its Capacity
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Probabilistic considerations have been practiced in determining the capacity of a dam after the introduction of probability theory of dams by P. A. P. Moran (1954). Various researchers determined the capacity by using stationary distribution of the dam content, mean of the first emptiness time, and by specifying the probability of overflow of a dam. In this study, after highlighting the methods used by the design engineers using probabilistic consideration at various stages of the process, capacity has been determined by using the probability of emptiness and overflow simultaneously. As an example, riverflow data of Mitta Mitta River of Australia …

Faith, Femininity, And The Frontier: The Life Of Martha Jane Knowlton Coray, Amy Reynolds Billings
Faith, Femininity, And The Frontier: The Life Of Martha Jane Knowlton Coray, Amy Reynolds Billings
Theses and Dissertations
Through examining the life of Martha Jane Knowlton Coray, a nineteenth-century Mormon woman, this thesis establishes an analytical framework for studying the lives of Mormon women in territorial Utah. Their faith, femininity, and the frontier form the boundaries in which their lives are studied. Their faith was primarily defined by the doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, such as a belief in a restored gospel and priesthood, temples, and polygamy. These unique beliefs also fostered an identity as a chosen people and contributed to hostile feelings from their neighbors. Persecution followed and the Latter-day Saint community …
Integrating Water Quality Modeling With Gis To Determine Management Strategies: A Study Of Fort Gordon, Ga
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Land managers of the Fort Gordon military installation in Augusta, GA were in need of a tool which would predict the effects to water quality produced by changes in land use as well as predict impacts of existing land use condition to the quality of water on and leaving the installation. Over the past ten years many studies have evolved which provided differing levels of integration between water quality models and geographic information systems software. The Hydrologic Unit Water Quality Tool is a software package developed by NRCS employees in Ft. Collins, Colorado, which provides an intermediate integration between AGNPS …

A Cross-Firm Analysis Of The Impact Of Corporate Governance On The East Asian Financial Crisis, Todd Mitton
A Cross-Firm Analysis Of The Impact Of Corporate Governance On The East Asian Financial Crisis, Todd Mitton
Faculty Publications
In a sample of 398 firms from Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand, firm-level differences in variables related to corporate governance had a strong impact on firm performance duringthe East Asian financial crisis of 1997–1998. Significantly better stock price performance is associated with firms that had indicators of higher disclosure quality (ADRs and auditors from Big Six accounting firms), with firms that had higher outside ownership concentration, and with firms that were focused rather than diversified. The results suggest that individual firms have some power to preclude expropriation of minority shareholders if legal protection is inadequate.

Evaluation Of A Compound Probability Model With Tower-Mounted Scatterometer Data, David G. Long, Benjamin E. Barrowes
Faculty Publications
Six months of data from the YSCAT94 experiment conducted at the CCIW WAVES research platform on Lake Ontario, Canada, are analyzed to evaluate a compound probability model. YSCAT was an ultrawideband small footprint (ap 1 m) microwave scatterometer that operated at frequencies of 2-18 GHz, incidence angles from 0° to 60°, both h-pol and v-pol, and which tracked the wind using simultaneous weather measurements. The probability distribution function of the measured instantaneous backscattered amplitude (p(a)) is compared to theoretical distributions developed from-the composite model and a simple wave spectrum. Model parameters of the resulting Rayleigh/generalized lognormal distribution probability density function …
Using Transition Probability Geostatistics With Modflow, Norman L. Jones, J. R. Walker, S. F. Carle
Using Transition Probability Geostatistics With Modflow, Norman L. Jones, J. R. Walker, S. F. Carle
Faculty Publications
This paper describes a technique for applying the transition probability geostatistics method for stochastic simulation to a MODFLOW model. Transition probability geostatistics has several advantages over traditional indicator kriging methods, including a simpler and more intuitive framework for interpreting geological relationships and the ability to simulate juxtapositional tendencies such s fining-upwards sequences. The indicator arrays generated by the transition probability simulation are converted to layer elevation and thickness arrays for use with the new Hydrogeologic Unit Flow (HUF) package in MODFLOW 2000. This makes it possible to preserve complex heterogeneity while using reasonably sized grids.
