For many and various reasons the complexity of Erasmus of Rotterdam will never cease to give substance to historical meditation. One might be fascinated, as were the great writers of the Enlightenment, by his opposition to every kind of inessential traditionalism in religion and philosophy or by the cosmopolitan radiation of his thinking among his contemporaries at a period of growing nationalism. The purpose of this study was to compare the use of selected official and unofficial Church periodicals by Seminary and Institute personnel of the Church with the objectives and purposes of those periodicals. It was also to determine the relevancy of those periodicals to the department personnel and their students. The magazines studied were: The Improvement Era, The Instructor, Church News, Impact, Brigham Young University Studies, and Dialogue.

This study describes the historical development of the Nauvoo, Illinois, public school system, 1841-1845.
Many church, civic, and social organizations offered a wide variety of learning experiences to the citizens of Nauvoo. A set of questions was devised for this study to distinguish and to describe the Nauvoo school system from the multiplicity of educational offerings.

This study was designed to evaluate the L.D.S. institute instructors use of statements made by leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These leaders have instructed Church school teachers to teach what the prophets have said and not the teachers own ideas or views on doctrine.

The data from this study show the following: (1) Approximately twenty per cent of instructor responses in selecting the stated principles of the Church on a current issue are incorrect; (2) The ability of the instructors to recognize prophet's statements from non-prophet's statements is seventy-three per cent; (3) Over ninty per …

A Study Of The Impact Of Three Films Upon Lds College Students' Acceptance Of Certain Patterns Of Affection, William R. Cunningham

The purpose of this investigation was to try to measure the perceived effect of three films upon L. D. S. college student's attitudes toward premarital affection immediately after viewing each film and over a time interval of three to four weeks. The sample consisted of seven health classes (180 males and 195 females in total) in the Department of Health Education at the Brigham Young University. A questionnaire was devised by the investigator and used as the instrument to determine the student's perceived attitudes toward premarital affection.

Park City, Utah, has been one of the most permanent mining camps in Utah. While constituting the industrial and population center of Summit County, it has contributed over one half billions dollars to the economies of Utah and the nation. This thesis deals with the early years of Park City, 1869-1910. This period saw an influx and combination of several ethnic groups which served to enrich the cultural history of Park City. In her attempt to find a strictly human origin for certain doctrines contained in the Book of Abraham, and the later teachings of Joseph Smith, Mrs. Fawn M. Brodie relies upon the writings of one Thomas Dick. Dick was a nineteenth century Scottish scientist-theologian who wrote several volumes on religious and scientific subjects. It is known that at least two volumes were known to at least some of the early Latter-day Saints, for passages from them were quoted in the Messenger and Advocate. This thesis attempts to treat four problems: What is the gospel, as defined in Latter-day Saint literature? Do ancient and modern sources agree? Has there been an historical development of the definitions? Can any disagreements be rationalized? The results of this research reveal that the gospel is complex in that it is capable of handling all the problems of eternity, yet it is simple in that it is a plan of specific principles which lead man step by step to perfection. This article examines the Inspired Version of the Bible translated by Joseph Smith, the first president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Matthews compares Joseph’s Inspired Version with the Bernhisel Manuscript, which has never been published. He also illustrates how Joseph Smith’s revision of the Bible was significant to the establishment of the church.

The Utah Newspaper War Of 1968: Liquor-By-The-Drink, Raymond E. Beckham Sr.

A group of Utah citizens, supported by the Salt Lake Tribune, campaigned in May and June of 1968 to change Utah's liquor distribution system from a state-owned package method to one which would allow mixed drinks. Opponents of the change were supported by the Deseret News.

The two newspapers became the spokesmen for the two opposing groups. A careful analysis of them shows that of the 2,844.6 column inches of space in the Tribune, and of the 1,856.2 column inches in the News, exclusive of advertising, more than eight per cent in each newspaper supported the …

A Study To Determine The Seminary Students' And Teachers' Understanding Of The Concept Of "Living Prophets" In Non-Credit Released Time Classes, Ray R. Louder

The purpose of this study was to determine how effectively seminary teachers teach the concept of "living prophets" to students in non-credit released time and early morning seminary classes.
The study was composed of a sample of 475 seminary students in non-credit released time and early morning seminary classes, and twenty seminary teachers. Each participant answered a questionnaire to test his concept of "living prophets." The responses were tabulated and presented in written and illustrative form.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the LDS Seminary Scripture Chase in the following areas: (1) Principles of learning involved; (2) Percentage of full-time teachers using the Scripture Chase; (3) Teacher evaluation of the Scripture Chase in terms of (a) teacher training in the Scripture Chase, (b) student involvement and application, (c) areas of effectiveness and (d) evaluation and rating of the over-all program.
Questionnaires were sent to 498 full-time Seminary teachers in Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Canada with a return of 80.3 percent. The data revealed that 143, or 33 percent regularly use …

A Study Of Factors Which May Influence Attitudes Of Lds Teen-Agers Toward Family Home Evening, Don Leroy Miller

The purpose of this study was to identify factors related to attitudes of teenagers toward the Family Home Evening Program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hypotheses involving the relationships of certain factors to attitudes toward home evening were tested.

A cluster sample of twenty-three ninth grade classes was selected and data were gathered through use of a questionnaire. Statistics used in analysis of data included the Pearsonian product moment correlation coefficient, and analysis of variance. Responses to open-end questions were content analyzed by three independent judges.
