A), Paragnetina fumosa, Acroneuria abnormis, Acroneuria arenosa, Perlinella drymo, and Perlesta placida are found both east and west of the Mississippi; and Allocapnia granulata, Allocapnia malverna, Amphinemoura nigritta, and three species of Taeniopteryx have been recorded only west of the …

Bionomics Of Two Aspen Bark Beetles : Trypophloeus Populi And Procryphalus Mucronatus (Coleoptera:Scolytidae), Jerold L. Petty Jul 1976

Bionomics Of Two Aspen Bark Beetles : Trypophloeus Populi And Procryphalus Mucronatus (Coleoptera:Scolytidae), Jerold L. Petty

Theses and Dissertations

Beetles of Trypophloeus populi attacked green bark of unhealthy aspen (Populus tremuloides) and hastened the death of the tree. Beetles of Procryphalus mucronatus favored dead bark and were of little significance in the death of the aspen. These two beetle species were distinguished from each other by their primary galleries, eggs, larvae, larval mines, and mating behavior. In T. populi, there were three larval instars and one to one and one-half generations per year; only larvae overwintered, and the eggs of the first generation were present by mid-July. In P. mucronatus, there were two larval instars and one and one-half …

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria In Systems Of (I) Para-Xylene, (Ii) Mesitylene, And (Iii) N,N-Dimethylformamide ; Excess Volume Determination In Systems Containing Cyclohexane ; Calculations Of Activities For The N-Hexane + Cyclohexane System, John F. Moellmer Jul 1976

Moellmer

Theses and Dissertations

Solid-liquid phase equilibria studies were used to investigate possible compolllld formation in solutions of (i) para-xylene, (ii) mesitylene, and (iii) N,N-dimethyl-formamide (DMF) with mono- and di- halobenzenes that were selected to give a wide range of acceptor properties. Solid 1:1 intermolecular compounds were identified from solutions of p-C_6H_4F_2 with mesitylene, p-C_6H_4Br_2 with p-xylene, and p-C_6H_4Cl_2 with p-xylene. The results suggest that compound formation occurs because of favorable geometry rather than a charge transfer process. A vibrating tube densimeter was used to determine, with high precision, the densities and subsequently excess volumes of mixing of the n-hexane plus cyclohexane system. Temperature …

Three New Species Of Nearctic Isoperla (Plecoptera), Stanley W. Szczytko, Kenneth W. Stewart

Great Basin Naturalist

Nymphs and adults of three new species of Isoperla are described from reared material. I. sagittata is known only from southeastern Texas, I. Coushatta has been collected in East Texas and Oklahoma, and I. jewetti occurs in the Basin and Range Mountains of West Texas. The male aedeagii, female subgenital plates, and nymphal mouthparts are diagnostic in all three species.

The Meaning Of The American Bicentennial, Hans R. Guggisberg May 1976

The Meaning Of The American Bicentennial, Hans R. Guggisberg

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

People who deal professionally with historical research , historical writing or the teaching of history, tend somewhat to look down their noses at anniversaries which commemorate historical events or personalities. Why is it, they ask, that the general public suddenly seems to take an interest in history when the latter takes the shape of a roundnumbered date, while otherwise in our world so exclusively concerned with the present and the future, none but the professional historians still believe that we can learn from the past? It would not be easy to answer that question and I shall not attempt to …

The Southern States Mission And The Administration Of Ben E. Rich, 1898-1908: Including A Statistical Study Of Church Growth In The Southeastern United States During The Twentieth Century, Ted S. Anderson Jan 1976

The Southern States Mission And The Administration Of Ben E. Rich, 1898-1908: Including A Statistical Study Of Church Growth In The Southeastern United States During The Twentieth Century, Ted S. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Although The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sent numerous missionaries to labor in the South prior to the Civil War, a formal mission organization did not exist until the etsablishment of the Southern States Mission of the Church in 1875 at Shady Grove, Tennessee. This thesis details the significant events in the mission during the eventful years of the Ben E. Rich administration, 1898 to 1908. Following his courageous example, hundreds of missionaries taught the message of the Restored Gospel to the people of the South during a renewed period of persecution and hatred as the acceptance of …

The Pioneer Chinese Of Utah, Don C. Conley Jan 1976

The Pioneer Chinese Of Utah, Don C. Conley

Theses and Dissertations

With the single exception of a survey of Chinese history in the Western United States written by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, there exists no other documented history of the Chinese experience in Utah.

This paper offers an overview of Pioneer Chinese life in Utah territory from the Chinese railroad laborers in Box Elder County to the Chinatown settlement in Silver Reef mining camp in Washington County. Old Chinese customs, individual Chinese personalities and communities are rediscovered through the use of census data, newspaper editorials, and oral interviews. Chinese religion is analyzed from available data about pioneer Chinese funeral …

A History Of Female Missionary Activity In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1830-1898, Calvin S. Kunz Jan 1976

A History Of Female Missionary Activity In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1830-1898, Calvin S. Kunz

Theses and Dissertations

Latter-day Saint female missionary activities informally began in the early 1830's, remaining numerically unconstant until 1879, when a significant increase began. Between 1830 and 1898 over two hundred women had been involved in missionary work, laboring mostly in California, New York, Hawaii and England.

Before 1865, Latter-day Saint women did not have any official missionary status. After 1865, Church officials began the practice of setting them apart. Finally, in 1898 women were "certified" as missionaries which placed them on an equal status with their male counterparts.

Some lady missionaries performed household chores, taught school, preached sermons and presided over female …

Scrutinizing A Giant: Frisch's And Duerrenmatt's Views Of America Jan 1976

Scrutinizing A Giant: Frisch's And Duerrenmatt's Views Of America

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Ever since its discovery America has fascinated, intrigued and also repelled Europeans. And ever since in the 17th century Europeans have started to emigrate in greater numbers to North America, this land has been a puzzling giant to the transatlantic contemplator. For quite some time, the Europeans' direct experience and even their factual information was limited and, thus, the new continent was understandably prone to be mythified-be it as some sort of earthly paradise where goodness and freedom reigned, be it as a degenerated place infected by all imaginable vices of modern times. Yet even with today's array of information, …

Functional Problems And Informational Needs Of Latter-Day Saint Chaplains Serving In The United States Armed Forces, N. Vernon Griffeth Jan 1976

Functional Problems And Informational Needs Of Latter-Day Saint Chaplains Serving In The United States Armed Forces, N. Vernon Griffeth

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the functional problems and informational needs of LDS chaplains and bring together official Church statements in relation to them. A list of these needs was obtained by use of interviews and questionnaires from chaplains who have served since the Korean War. Information was also gathered from Military Relations Department files of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Research revealed that many Church statements, pertaining to functional problems and informational needs, were in existence but were not always easily accessible or did not adequately answer specific questions. It was also found …

The Teacher Training Program Administered By The Sunday School Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Steven A. Hedquist

Theses and Dissertations

Teaching is an art based upon the carefully considered scientific principles of pedagogy; therefore, teacher training has been an established policy of the Sunday School in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A fundamental educational responsibility in the Church is the preparation of members to teach well by providing them with methods for successful instruction. To accomplish this objective, the Sunday School developed a teacher training program whereby members became more proficient teachers.

The purpose of this study was to reconstruct the historical development and present a concise history of the teacher training program administered by the Sunday …

An Analysis Of The Immediate And Long-Range Implications Of Three Speeches Delivered By J. Reuben Clark, Jr., David Earl Buchanan

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide an analysis of the immediate and long-range implications of three speeches: (1) August 8,1938, (2) September 19, 1952, and (3) September 19, 1956, which J. Reuben Clark, Jr. delivered during the annual Pre-School Faculty Conference at Brigham Young University. The speeches were analyzed and compared to determine the goals and charges given and to determine whether there was carry-over from speech to speech.

The significant findings included: (1) The LDS Church school system is to be manned only by those individuals who have strong, undeviating testimonies of a living Savior, of the …

Formal Reporting Systems Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1830-1975, Dennis H. Smith Jan 1976

Formal Reporting Systems Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1830-1975, Dennis H. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Since its organization, the Church has kept records of its members and their Church activity. The foremost means of gathering this data has been printed report forms. This thesis traces the history of formal reports used by the Church and emphasizes information on membership and vital data as well as activity in Priesthood and auxiliary organizations. Financial reports of organizations and individual persons, as well as personalized confidential reports and minutes of meetings were not used. The thesis analyzes the type of information called for rather than the statistical figures themselves.
