Problems In Plant Endemism On The Colorado Plateau, Stanley L. Welsh Mar 1978

Problems In Plant Endemism On The Colorado Plateau, Stanley L. Welsh

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

The problem of distribution of plant endemics is explored, especially as regards distribution of these plant species on elevational and substrate bases. Endemics per unit area are greater at elevations above 1980 m and on finely textured soils. A summary of data and a list of references is presented.

Some Factors Governing Plant Distributions In The Mojave–Intermountain Transition Zone, Susan E. Meyer Mar 1978

Some Factors Governing Plant Distributions In The Mojave–Intermountain Transition Zone, Susan E. Meyer

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

The existence of a floristic transition zone can be inferred by the fact that a high proportion of indigenous plant species reach a distributional limit within the area. The vascular flora of Washington County, Utah, exhibits this character to a marked degree with 53.6 percent of the native flora reaching a distributional limit within the county. By looking at geographic distributions, ecological preferences, and range termination information for the component species, first approximations are made as to the probable factors mediating plant distributions within the county, particularly of the range-terminating species. The high proportion of range-terminating species in the flora …

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas Jan 1978

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas

Theses and Dissertations

Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." These definitions also tend to be statements of value, …

An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor Jan 1978

An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor

Theses and Dissertations

The primary function of this thesis was to determine, through the analysis of three randomly selected speeches, the speaking style of Heber C. Kimball. The selected speeches were presented in three different utah locations, and they covered a span of nine years (1856-65). All three speeches were presented to a Mormon audience and were religious in nature.

Seven elements of style have been used for the analysis of the three speeches. They are: accuracy, clarity, propriety, economy, force, striking quality, and liveliness. It was determined that President Kimball's speaking style was weak in the areas of accuracy and clarity. In …

Stratigraphy Of The Lower Tertiary And Upper Cretaceous (?) Continental Strata In The Canyon Range, Juab County, Utah, James M. Stolle Jan 1978

Stratigraphy Of The Lower Tertiary And Upper Cretaceous (?) Continental Strata In The Canyon Range, Juab County, Utah, James M. Stolle

Theses and Dissertations

The Canyon Range Formation (informal new name), formerly mapped as the Indianola Group within the Canyon Range, is divisible into two distinct, mappable units, A and B. Unit A is nearly all conglomerate strata, and conglomerate texture and sedimentary structures suggest an alluvial fan depositional environment. Precambrian and basal Cambrian quartzite clasts represent the erosional debris from the allochthonous Canyon Range thrust. Unit B is composed of interbedded fluvial sandstone and conglomerates with lacustrine limestones, commonly micritic and/or oncolitic. Conglomerate clasts indicate a Paleozoic carbonate provenance. Unit A, previously mapped as the Indianola, underlies Unit B and correlates with the …

The Limits Of Ethnicity, Irving Howe Jan 1978

The Limits Of Ethnicity, Irving Howe

The Bridge

Americans have often defined themselves through an unwillingness to define themselves. In the work of our greatest writers, notably Melville and Whitman, the refusal to succumb to fixity of definition comes to seem a cultural signature.

In opposition there has arisen a native industry of America-definers who offer a maddening plenitude of answers. But people in a hurry with answers have usually not even heard the questions. And finally it all comes to the same thing: many answers equal no answer.

Nectar-Sugar Concentrations And Flower Visitors In The Western Great Basin, Larry J. Gut, Robert A. Schlising, Carol E. Stopher Dec 1977

Nectar-Sugar Concentrations And Flower Visitors In The Western Great Basin, Larry J. Gut, Robert A. Schlising, Carol E. Stopher

Great Basin Naturalist

Nectar-sugar concentrations and major flower visitors were determined for 15 species of plants in the Eagle Lake area of Northeastern California. Sugar concentrations for 12 of these are reported for the first time, with means ranging from a low of 10 percent in Mentzelia laevicaulis to a high of 63 percent in Ranunculus uncinatus. The utilization of the various nectar concentrations varied with the type of flower visitor as well as with the habitat and distributional ranges of the plant and/or animal. Hummingbirds and hawkmoths were not observed visiting the flowers they typically visit in other areas (e.g. Aquilegia and …

A Survey Of Breeding And Migratory Birds Southwest Of Farmington, New Mexico, Duane A. Tolle Dec 1977

A Survey Of Breeding And Migratory Birds Southwest Of Farmington, New Mexico, Duane A. Tolle

Great Basin Naturalist

The relative abundance and habitat affinities of breeding and migratory waterfowl were documented for a 16,556 ha (40,880 acre) area of the Navajo Indian Reservation, San Juan County, New Mexico. The objective of the 1973–1974 study was to obtain baseline data for use as part of an environmental assessment for coal gasification plants and an associated strip mine proposed for an area not previously described in ornithological journals.

Roadside breeding-bird surveys resulted in the observation of 26 species of birds, of which the horned lark was most abundant. Additional breeding-bird observations were made during afternoon reconnaissance surveys around stock ponds …

Distributional Patterns Of Mammals In Utah, David M. Armstrong Dec 1977

Distributional Patterns Of Mammals In Utah, David M. Armstrong

Great Basin Naturalist

Based on a synthesis of recent work on distribution of mammals in Utah, the hierarchy of ecogeographic distributional units proposed by Durrant (1952) is reevaluated by numerical methods. Areographic faunal elements, distinguished on the basis of shapes of distributional ranges in North America, are identified. Relationships are shown between ecogeographic faunal units and areographic faunal elements, and their historical implications are discussed.

Leaf Litter Processing In Aquatic Systems Two Variable Model, Boyd Jay Hanson Dec 1977

Leaf Litter Processing In Aquatic Systems Two Variable Model, Boyd Jay Hanson

Theses and Dissertations

The adequacy of the negative exponential model with one independent variable, days or accumulated time, as a descriptive equation for aquatic leaf litter processing was examined. The effect of adding a second independent variable, degree days or accumulated temperature, to the model was also examined. The two variable negative exponential model was shown to have at least two advantages over the single variable model. The two variable model adequately fits litter processing data for more cases than the single variable model. The expanded model also allows determination of rate coefficients for various temperature levels of the experiment rather than assuming …

Guest Workers As An "Automatic Stabilizer" Of Cyclical Unemployment In Switzerland, W. E. Kuhn Nov 1977

Guest Workers As An "Automatic Stabilizer" Of Cyclical Unemployment In Switzerland, W. E. Kuhn

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In the early 1970's, in excess of 5 percent of the total population of France, Germany, Britain, and Switzerland were immigrants, The extreme case was Switzerland, where one person in six had come from a foreign country. Between them, the four mentioned countries had nearly 10 million immigrants; this accounts for more than nine-tenths of the West European total of nearly 11 million. This estimate may be on the low side; Feurer indicates that in 1972 some 8 million guest workers lived in Europe who together with their families comprised about 13 million people, contributing some Sfr. 80 billion (about …

Host-Induced Morphological Variations In The Strigeoid Trematode Posthodiplostomum Minimum (Trematoda: Diplostomatidae). Iii. Organs Of Attachment, James R. Palmieri Sep 1977

Host-Induced Morphological Variations In The Strigeoid Trematode Posthodiplostomum Minimum (Trematoda: Diplostomatidae). Iii. Organs Of Attachment, James R. Palmieri

Great Basin Naturalist

A variety of amphibian, reptilian, avian, and mammalian hosts were used in experimental development of Posthodiplostomum minimum. As a result of this study much host-induced morphological variation was noted in several organs of attachment. Variations in the oral sucker ranged from a well-developed muscular organ to a weakly developed oral slit. Acetabular development ranged from well-developed to reduced forms lacking apical musculature, tegumental spines, and sensory structures. The holdfast organ showed marked reduction in most poikilothermic hosts.

High Pressure Liquid Chromatographic Methods For The Separations Of Derivatized Alpha-Keto Acids And Thiamine Phosphate Esters, Bruce Clark Hemming Aug 1977

High Pressure Liquid Chromatographic Methods For The Separations Of Derivatized Alpha-Keto Acids And Thiamine Phosphate Esters, Bruce Clark Hemming

Theses and Dissertations

Improved methods have been developed for separation of a-keto acid derivatives and for thiamine and its phosphate esters. Linear gradient reverse phase chromatography using ion-pair formation provides baseline resolution for a seven-component homologous series of a-keto acid dinitrophenylhydrazones having increasing carbon chain lengths. Branched-chain keto acids can also be separated. Aldehyde derivatives were examined as possible interfering compounds. Peak identification in biological material was confirmed for pyruvate by an enzymic peak shift technique. Monitoring near 365 nm permits low nanogram detection. Preliminary studies of keto acids in biological material illustrate the method's applicability. The same system with slight changes separates …

Drosophila Pseudoobscura Of The Great Basin, Monte E. Turner Aug 1977

Drosophila Pseudoobscura Of The Great Basin, Monte E. Turner

Theses and Dissertations

Four Utah populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura from the Wasatch Mountains in Utah were sampled and characterized for third chromosome gene arrangements. The original samples in this area were taken in 1940 and 1950. At that time the populations were essentially monomorphic for the Arrowhead arrangement, with small percentages of Pikes Peak and Chiricahua also found. The current samples show these populations to contain eight third chromosome arrangements; seven previously described (AR, PP, CH, ST, TL, OL, EP) and a newly discovered endemic arrangement (American Fork, AF), with breakpoints 63E and 70D. The frequency of AR had decreased to 25% in …

The Synthesis Of Novel Macrocyclic Multidentate Compounds From Dioxodioic Acids (1), R. Elliott Asay Aug 1977

The Synthesis Of Novel Macrocyclic Multidentate Compounds From Dioxodioic Acids (1), R. Elliott Asay

Theses and Dissertations

A series of novel macrocyclic multidentate crown compounds have been prepared from a series of dioxodioic acids. The dioxodioic acids were prepared by treating various oligoethylene glycols or amines with maleic, succinic, citraconic, and glutaric anhydrides. The crown compounds were then synthesized from the dioxodioic acid chlorides obtained from the diacids and various oligoethylene glycols or ethylene diamine.

Behavior And Age Class Structure Of Wintering Northern Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus Alascanus) In Western Utah, Ronald A. Joseph Jul 1977

Behavior And Age Class Structure Of Wintering Northern Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus Alascanus) In Western Utah, Ronald A. Joseph

Theses and Dissertations

Bald Eagles in Cedar and Rush Valleys of western Utah were studied from 1975 to 1977. Arriving in mid-November, the eagles departed in mid-March. A statewide Bald Eagle census revealed 200 to 300 birds. Wintering eagle populations have remained stable for the past 10 years. Immatures comprised 35% of the population in 1975-76 and 33% in 1976-77. While Black-tailed jackrabbits are the primary food source of wintering eagles in western Utah, other mammalian carrion serve as supplementary food items. Eagles utilized 4 communal night roosts. Three day communal roosts were located on south facing slopes. The social existence of Bald …

The Life Cycle Of Hydroperla Crosbyi (Plecoptera: Perlodidae), Reed Y. Oberndorfer, Kenneth W. Stewart Jun 1977

The Life Cycle Of Hydroperla Crosbyi (Plecoptera: Perlodidae), Reed Y. Oberndorfer, Kenneth W. Stewart

Great Basin Naturalist

Hydroperla crosbyi in Texas exhibited a univoltine, fast life cycle over the three-year study period. Adults emerged in February–March when mean daily stream temperature reached ca. 15 C. Reared females in the lab deposited up to three egg masses. Mean fecundity of dissected females was 787 eggs/female. Oviposition in the field was observed and described.

Eggs were triangular in cross section, brown, and measured 400 µm × 535 µm. They underwent an ca. seven-month diapause until mean daily stream temperature decreased to 18 C. Eyespots appeared, and hatching followed in two to three weeks. First instar nymphs were measured and …
