Distribution Of Photosynthetically Fixed 14C In Perennnial Plant Species Of The Northern Mojave Desert, A. Wallace, J. W. Cha, E. M. Romney
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
The distribution of photosynthate among plant parts subsequent to its production is needed to fully understand behavior of vegetation in any ecosystem. The present study, undertaken primarily to obtain information on transport of assimilates into roots of desert vegetation, was conducted in the northern Mojave Desert, where the mean annual rainfall is about 10 cm. Shoots of Ambrosia dumosa (A. Gray) Payne plants were exposed to 14CO2 in1971, and the distribution of 14C in roots, stems, and leaves was subsequently measured at 1 week, 2 months, and 5months. Only about 12 percent of the 14C photosynthate …

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Often the historian is faced with the question of how the study of the past relates to the present. Even when Leopold von Ranke's admonition is followed, and we try to tell history "as it essentially was" and eliminate subjectivity, purely personal opinions are difficult to keep out of formal academic work. Even when objectivity is attempted, the historian will have personal convictions about the object of his study in relation to his own existence.
Poisonous Plants Of Utah, Jack D. Brotherson, Lee A. Szyska, William E. Evenson
Poisonous Plants Of Utah, Jack D. Brotherson, Lee A. Szyska, William E. Evenson
Great Basin Naturalist
A list of the major livestock-poisoning plants has been compiled for the state of Utah. Two hundred fifteen taxa representing 36 families, 119 genera, and 209 species occur within the state. Forty-one percent are from two families, the Asteraceae and the Fabaceae. The remaining families of major importance are: Poaceae, Ranunculaceae, Solanaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Brassicaceae, Ascelpiadaceae, Liliaceae, and Euphorbiaceae. Sixty-nine percent of the genera occur with a single species. Thirty-three percent of the taxa are introduced to the state. Most of the plants are insect pollinated; 57 percent are herbaceous perennials.
Most livestock poisoning occurs during the spring. This is due …
Observations On Seasonal Variation In Desert Arthropods In Central Nevada, Robert D. Pietruszka
Observations On Seasonal Variation In Desert Arthropods In Central Nevada, Robert D. Pietruszka
Great Basin Naturalist
Pitfall and Malaise trap collections from terrestrial arthropod populations in central Nevada were analyzed for four trapping periods during the 1978 growing season. Mites (Acarina) and ants (Formicidae) were the taxa represented by the largest numbers of individuals in pitfall trap collections throughout the season; Malaise collections were composed mainly of aerial taxa (largely Diptera and Hymenoptera). Peak arthropod abundance was recorded during mid-June. Collection diversities for both trapping methods were generally low due to the abundance of a few taxa. Evidence for spatial heterogeneity in arthropod populations was meager; temporal heterogeneity in these populations, however, was more apparent.

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
On Friday April fourth the second semi-annual spring covention of AMCAP was held at the LDS Institute at the University of Utah. The theme was taken from 2 Nephi 9:28-29: "O that cunning plan of the evil one! O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish. But to be learned is good if they hearken …

Swiss Food And Foodways In Early Pennsylvania, William Woys Weaver
Swiss Food And Foodways In Early Pennsylvania, William Woys Weaver
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
When the immigrants from Basel composed this song about corning to Pennsylvania in 1803, I do not think they realized --in spite of their enthusiasrn--what a very strange mixture of things they would find there a century and a half ago. Certainly, this was a major area of Swiss settlernent and in spite of the pressures of acculturation, there were many foods that the 1803 settlers would recognize from their homeland.

Karl Luond, Schweizer In Amerika., Bruno Gujer
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
As a Swiss in America one is particularly sensitive about what is written in Switzerland about America and Swiss immigrants here. Karl Luond's Schweizer in Amerika is a welcome though flawed introduction to thegreat saga of Swiss immigration to this country. Welcome, because Luond covers the most important names and places, and gives insight into the great diversity among the men and women who attempted a new beginning across the Atlantic. One marvels at the achievement of a Gallatin, Ammann or Zwick, at the wealth of a Guggenheim or Frick, at the hardships of the pioneer settlers.
