Peter Bartley, Mormonism: The Prophet, The Book And The Cult, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 1990

Peter Bartley, Mormonism: The Prophet, The Book And The Cult, Daniel C. Peterson

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

Review of Mormonism: The Prophet, The Book and the Cult (1989), by Peter Bartley. Bartley attacks Mormonism and its sacred book, the Book of Mormon, which is not surprising when one notes the anti-Mormon sources he cosulted. Rigorous and well-grounded arguments are lacking, and sweepingly dogmatic assertions dominate. He faults the Book of Mormon on various claims as well as on stylistic grounds--he asserts that it appears to be written entirely by one person. This publication represents just one more anti-Mormon book.

A Danish Socialist In Capitalist Chicago, George R. Nielsen Jan 1990

A Danish Socialist In Capitalist Chicago, George R. Nielsen

The Bridge

The vast majority of the 200,000 Danes who migrated to America in the 19th century came as ordinary, anonymous people looking for work and willing to live within the American system. Louis Pio, on the other hand, was wellknown in Denmark, especially to the Copenhagen police and businessmen, and came to America with a mission to reform society in both Europe and America. In America, however, Pio never gained the status that he had held in Denmark and his attempts at social reform were unsuccessful. Yet, in spite of Pia's lackluster life in the United States, scholars, for good reason, …

Narrative Description In Marco Polo's Travels: A Nonfictional Application Of Bakhtin's Chronotope, Ute Margarete Saine Jan 1990

Narrative Description In Marco Polo's Travels: A Nonfictional Application Of Bakhtin's Chronotope, Ute Margarete Saine

Quidditas

Throughout the text of Marco Polo's Devisement du monde, the reader is repeatedly enjoined to believe the narration. Such a captatio benevolantiae – the rhetorical convention inviting reader interest – typically takes the form of assertions, such as "I am telling nothing but the truth"; "Everybody ought too believe this"; "This is how it was"; "This is how Marco Polo saw it," and the like. The narrator even proposes to uphold the sophisticated distinction between eyewitness information, gathered firsthand, and accounts obtained from others:

We will set down things seen as seen, things heard as heard, so that our …

Religious Validity: The Sacrament Covenant in Third Nephi

Richard Lloyd Anderson

I have just nished another reading of the Book of Mormon, and what a wonderful rejuvenation this has been as vistas of doctrine open up. The spirit is a complex thing. It comes as it will, as Jesus said to Nicodemus (John 3:8). Sometimes you feel a burning and a warmth, and sometimes you feel a peace and clarity of thought. The latter is my experience in reading the Book of Mormon this time. In the rst reading I felt the warmth intensely. I can remember my impressions of …

Exemplarity And The Interpretive Frame In Marguerite De Navarre's Heptaméron, V. Stanley Benfell Jan 1990

Exemplarity And The Interpretive Frame In Marguerite De Navarre's Heptaméron, V. Stanley Benfell

Quidditas

Marguerite de Navarre's Heptaméron is one of the many works that have fallen prey to the contemporary fascination with indeterminacy and the poetics of failure. Increasingly, critics are writing of the "ambiguity" of the novella collection and the lack of narrative resolve that seems to characterize both the novellas and the discussions by the "devisants" that surround the novellas. My purpose in this essay is to contest this view. I intend to show that from a historical perspective, when the Heptaméron is seen in the light of the pervasive rhetorical concerns of late Renaissance writers, the prevailing critical view is …

The Similar Complementarity Of Othello, Maurice Hunt Jan 1990

The Similar Complementarity Of Othello, Maurice Hunt

Quidditas

Certainly the argument that the principle of complementarity illuminates Othello is nothing new in Shakespeare studies. Over twenty years ago, Norman Rabkin, using an analogy from modern physics, described Shakespeare's characters and motifs as composing complementary wholes. The following excerpt accurately represents his reading of Othello's character: "He is what he is by virtue of what he is not. And what he is not, what he excludes from himself, rises quickly to the surface in the person of Iago. Whatever formulations we make about it, each reader senses the intimacy of the relationship between these mighty opposites, the degree to …

Symbolic Action And Persuasion In The Book Of Mormon, Keith H. Lane Jan 1990

Symbolic Action And Persuasion In The Book Of Mormon, Keith H. Lane

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis contends that the Book of Mormon can be profitably read from a rhetorical perspective. It employs Kenneth Burke's ideas concerning language, texts, and his method of dramatistic analysis, to reveal certain persuasive aspects of the Book of Mormon, and to urge action in response to the persuasion of the Book of Mormon.

Chapter one discusses common ways of reading scripture, and explains some of the inadequacies of these approaches. It gives a rationale of a rhetorical approach that concerns itself with action, and recommends this approach for the Book of Mormon. Chapter two applies a rhetorical reading to …

A Landowner Chides Brigham Young For Not Speaking To Him At Buffalo Canyon, And Receives An Answer, Thomas A. Kuhlman Jan 1990

A Landowner Chides Brigham Young For Not Speaking To Him At Buffalo Canyon, And Receives An Answer, Thomas A. Kuhlman

BYU Studies

Thomas A. Kuhlman acquires a small piece of land he named Buffalo Canyon situated just outside of Florence, Nebraska, between Mill Creek Valley and Ponca Hills. He writes of the historical significance of the land, telling of the times he sat on the land reading histories of the fur traders, of Lewis and Clark's crossing the Missouri, of protection provided by soldiers at Fort Atkinson, and of Latter-day Saints on migration west to the Great Salt Lake Valley. He longs for a connection with the past, but his world of modern-day suffering seems too remote from the romantic past. Finally …

The Geography Of Book Of Mormon Events: A Sourcebook, John L. Sorenson Jan 1990

The Geography Of Book Of Mormon Events: A Sourcebook, John L. Sorenson

Maxwell Institute Publications

Introduction

The subject of "Book of Mormon geography" has stimulated three different responses among Latter-day Saints over the years. On the part of Church authorities caution, if not anxiety, has prevailed. For a minority of members the reaction has been persistent curiosity. Meanwhile a large majority have been satisfied to ignore the matter.

The Burden Of Responsibility In The Libro De Buen Amor, Lynn Williams Jan 1990

The Burden Of Responsibility In The Libro De Buen Amor, Lynn Williams

Faculty Publications

In three of the early sections of the Libro de buen amor, Juan Ruiz explains to his public how, for various reasons, he is conditioned to love women. In stanzas 71-76 he uses the unimpeachable authority of Aristotle to argue that men and animals are biologically determined to seek 'juntamiento con fenbra plazentera' (st. 71d), and since he is a man like any other, it is natural, perhaps even inevitable, that from time to time he too should feel the attraction of the opposite sex. Paraphrasing St Paul (I Thessalonians 5.21), the Archpriest tells us rather cheekily that one must …

A Community Study Of Coalville, Utah, 1859-1914, Norma Eileen Pyper Thompson Jan 1990

A Community Study Of Coalville, Utah, 1859-1914, Norma Eileen Pyper Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is about a small Mormon community, Coalville, Utah, during the time period 1859 to 1914. Coalville is located in the northeastern section of the state of Utah in Summit County on Interstate 80.
Although Coalville remained small in population, it is worthwhile to study its origins, the people who built its institutions, its social life and economy and how it developed from a mere camping spot on the road between Salt Lake to Wyoming into a stable community. Coalville's development was significant to the growth and culture of Utah.
The founders experienced the usual pioneer struggles to conquer …

Incidental Effects Of Church Activity On Development, Landscapes And Culture: An Example From Tonga, Sosaia Hakaumotu Naulu Jan 1990

Incidental Effects Of Church Activity On Development, Landscapes And Culture: An Example From Tonga, Sosaia Hakaumotu Naulu

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of religious bodies upon the economy, landscape and culture of developing countries is a topic that needs further study. Intuitively, mission work in such lands would seems to have some impact but the actual conditions and changes are not carefully defined. This thesis seeks to describe one instance, the effect of the LDS Church upon Tonga. Here the Church is a fairly recent entrant into the land and its effects may readily be seen.

The LDS Church was found to play a modest role in the economy and a much greater role in changing landscapes. It is seen …

Thomas Bullock As An Early Mormon Historian, Jerald F. Simon

BYU Studies

Jerald F. Simon writes about Thomas Bullock's life in relation to the effect he had on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as given in Bullock's own journals and diaries. Bullock, born in England, immigrated to the United States and quickly found himself employed as a clerk for Joseph Smith, the Nauvoo Masonic Lodge, and steamboat Maid of Iowa, among several other positions. Bullock also worked closely with Brigham Young. He followed the church from Nauvoo to Winter Quarters and into the Great Salt Lake Valley and was pivotal in the beginnings of Deseret News.

In Praise Of Ourselves: Stories To Tell, William A. Wilson

William A. Wilson shares his own family stories through the lives of his grandfather, Robert Green, and his mother, Lucile Green Wilson. Both were Mormon settlers in Riddyville, Utah. He tells of their adventures at Lake Bonneville and in McCammon and about their everyday family interactions.

Effect Of Indomethacin-Treated Wheat On A Wild Population Of Montane Voles, Rodney R. Seeley, Timothy D. Reynolds Oct 1989

Effect Of Indomethacin-Treated Wheat On A Wild Population Of Montane Voles, Rodney R. Seeley, Timothy D. Reynolds

Great Basin Naturalist

Semiweekly mark and recapture livetrapping was conducted July–October 1985 to determine the effectiveness of wheat treated with inomethacin, a prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor, to control the productivity of a wild population of montane voles (Microtus montanus) in southeastern Idaho. Before treatment, control (C) and experimental (E) groups, each on ca 0.3 ha, were statistically equal in population size (x̄ ± SD; C = 50 ± 21, E = 45 ± 14), adult female: male ratio (C = 1:0.8, E = 1:0.7), juvenile:adult ratio (C =0.16:1, E = 0.13:1), number of juveniles per 100 females (x̄ ± SD; C = …
