The Analysis Of A Model For Wave Motion In A Liquid Semiconductor: Boundary Interaction And Variable Conductivity, William V. Smith Mar 1991

The Analysis Of A Model For Wave Motion In A Liquid Semiconductor: Boundary Interaction And Variable Conductivity, William V. Smith

Faculty Publications

The theory of conducting fluids in relative motion with small conductivity is studied with a model including the Maxwell displacement current. The model is linearized, and the interaction of waves with a plane boundary in three space is studied for two orientations of the external magnetic field. It is found that two families of boundary conditions preserve energy in one orientation (external field orthogonal to the boundary), while in the other (external field parallel to the boundary) only one condition exists which preserves energy. It is shown that generalized Fourier transforms exist, generated from the generalized eigenfunction expansions. Further, it …

Historical Notes About The Danish American Fellowship Of Minnesota, Caroline Olsen

The Bridge

This is the story of the Danish American Fellowship of the Twin Cities. But before its founding in 1948 there were many separate Danish organizations and events that led to the founding of the Fellowship, a co-ordinating organization that united many groups. Wherever there have been settlements of Danish immigrants there have been Danish social organizations, not always in harmony with one another.

Rediscovering The Book Of Mormon: Insights That You May Have Missed Before, John L. Sorenson, Melvin J. Thorne Jan 1991

Rediscovering The Book Of Mormon: Insights That You May Have Missed Before, John L. Sorenson, Melvin J. Thorne

Maxwell Institute Publications

This book shares the exciting results of scholarly research on the Book of Mormon undertaken during the 1980s. As an ancient religious text and cultural artifact, the Book of Mormon rewards close analysis along many lines of inquiry. Twenty-three essays by prominent LDS scholars cover such topics as warfare, repentance, Exodus motifs, Hebraisms, kingship, politics, Isaiah, Mormon as editor, chiasmus, covenant renewal, and poetry.

These studies aim to demonstrate that the Book of Mormon contains complex patterns not previously recognized—that is, subtle patterns of style, ideas, history, and actions that, once made visible, shed much light on the power and …

Mythological Lovers In Chaucer's Troilus And Criseyde, Katherine Heinrichs Jan 1991

Mythological Lovers In Chaucer's Troilus And Criseyde, Katherine Heinrichs

Quidditas

Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde is often criticized by modern scholars for the abruptness of its epilogue rejecting earthly love. Paull Baum objects that the moral of the epilogue is not, in fact, the moral of the tale and suggests that Chaucer might better have concluded in the manner of the stilnovisti, with Criseyde as a transfigured "gloriosa donna." J. S. P. Tatlock protests that "the feeling of the Epilog is in no way foreshadowed at the beginning or elsewhere; it does not illumine or modify; it contradicts. The heartfelt worldly tale is interpreted in an unworldly sense." He is …

Sir Clyomon And Sir Clamydes: A Revaluation, Peter T. Hadorn Jan 1991

Sir Clyomon And Sir Clamydes: A Revaluation, Peter T. Hadorn

Quidditas

Long dismissed as an immature play with no intrinsic merit, Sir Clyomon and Sir Clamydes (ca. 1570-1583) quite thoroughly debates issues of contemporary political interest. This essay seeks to restore Clyomon from its undistinguished position in Renaissance studies by showing how it dramatically supports Queen Elizabeth's use of chivalry as an ideology of power and order and criticizes military adventurism. By reading this play as a political text, in this essay I employ the methodologies of New Historicism, which identifies literature as only one of many cultural discourses taking part in the negotiation of power. "Representations of the world in …

Danish Artists Of The American West: Olaf Seltzer And Olaf Wieghorst, Cecilia Ibsen Larsen Jan 1991

Danish Artists Of The American West: Olaf Seltzer And Olaf Wieghorst, Cecilia Ibsen Larsen

The Bridge

If you mix cowboys, Indians, Danes and paint, you come up with two remarkable artists, Olaf Seltzer and Olaf Wieghorst. These two men came to America from Denmark and, after living and working here for numbers of years, produced art that is as American as American art can get. Their subject was the Old West. Although their trips were 27 years apart, both Seltzer and Wieghorst came to America in their teens. Both worked at other occupations until they had developed the skills necessary to survive as artists. Both chose the West as their subject matter; both were named Olaf; …

Utah Indians And The Indian Slave Trade: The Mormon Adoption Program And Its Effect On The Indian Slaves, Robert M. Muhlestein Jan 1991

Utah Indians And The Indian Slave Trade: The Mormon Adoption Program And Its Effect On The Indian Slaves, Robert M. Muhlestein

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a study of the Mormon adoption program developed by the Mormons in response to the Indian slave trade in Utah, 1850-1880. It focuses on the Mormon justifications, as enumerated by Brigham Young, for the adoption policy and it links those justifications to expected results. Further this thesis compares the Mormon's expected results with the actual results of the adoption program through an analysis of historical accounts and Mormon ordinance records.

The Gospel Of Jesus Christ As Taught By The Nephite Prophets, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 1991

The Gospel Of Jesus Christ As Taught By The Nephite Prophets, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Three definitional passages in the Book of Mormon define the gospel or doctrine of Christ precisely as the way or means by which an individual can come to Christ and be saved. Jesus Christ is quoted in all three passages teaching a six-part formula: All men and women who will (1) believe or trust in him, (2) repent of all their sins, and (3) witness to the Father that they have so repented and taken his name upon them, will (4) receive a remission of sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost, which will guide and sustain them as …

Mormons And Germany, 1914-1933: A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Germany And Its Relationship With The German Governments From World War I To The Rise Of Hitler, Jeffery L. Anderson Jan 1991

Mormons And Germany, 1914-1933: A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Germany And Its Relationship With The German Governments From World War I To The Rise Of Hitler, Jeffery L. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This paper focuses on the Church's struggle in establishing itself in Germany with cultural, social, political and religious problems. The cultural and social problems focus primarily on the interaction between Mormon-American missionaries and leaders who preached Mormonism in a society somewhat different from their own. The political problems concern historical events such as the first world war, the inflation of 1923 in Germany, and the rise of Hitler, while the religious problems focus on the Church's interaction with other faiths who generally opposed it and the struggle of missionaries to establish congregations.

Humpback Chub (Gila Cypha) In The Yampa And Green Rivers, Dinosaur National Monument, With Observations On Roundtail Chub (G. Robusta) And Other Sympatric Fishes, Catherine A. Karp, Harold M. Tyus

Great Basin Naturalist

We evaluated distribution, habitat use, spawning, and species associations of the endangered humpback chub (Gila cypha) in the Yampa and Green rivers, Dinosaur National Monument, from 1986 to 1989. Adult and juvenile humpback chub were captured in high-gradient reaches of Yampa and Whirlpool canyons where they were rare (n = 133, < 1% of all fish captured). The fish was primarily captured in eddy habitats in association with 7 native and 12 nonnative fish species. Roundtail chub (G. robusta) were widely distributed in eddies, pools, runs, and riffles. Humpback chub (n = 39) and roundtail chub (n = 242) in reproductive condition were sympatric in eddy habitats during the 5–6-week period following highest spring runoff. River temperatures at this time …

Conservation Status Of Threatened Fishes In Warner Basin, Oregon, Jack E. Williams, Mark A. Stern, Alan V. Munhall, Gary A. Anderson Oct 1990

Conservation Status Of Threatened Fishes In Warner Basin, Oregon, Jack E. Williams, Mark A. Stern, Alan V. Munhall, Gary A. Anderson

Great Basin Naturalist

Two federally listed fishes, the Foskett speckled dace and Warner sucker, are endemic to Warner Basin in south central Oregon. The Foskett speckled dace is native only to a single spring in Coleman Valley. A nearby spring was stocked with dace in 1979 and 1980, and now provides a second population. The present numbers of dace probably are at their highest levels since settlement of the region. The Warner sucker historically occurred throughout much of the Warner Valley, but its distribution and abundance have been reduced by construction of reservoirs and irrigation dams and the introduction of predatory game fishes. …
