The two major streams in Mormon fiction seem to be radically at odds with each other, but an occasional dance together might lessen divisiveness.

The Sound Of Utah: The Presence Of Geographical Elements In Music Written About The State Of Utah, Kamia Walton Holt
The Sound Of Utah: The Presence Of Geographical Elements In Music Written About The State Of Utah, Kamia Walton Holt
Theses and Dissertations
Music is a by-product of place and time. Musicians have opportunities to use the idea of place in their music. Thus, music has regionally distinctive characteristics which reflect human perceptions of the physical environment. Artists of the past and present focus on geographical themes, and paint a picture of ‘place’ in their music. This thesis focuses on the music of a geographical location: Utah. Musicians wrote of Utah in hymns of the past, and contemporary musicians continue to write music about Utah. This thesis answers the questions: Is music characterized by geography? How have the local musicians been influenced by …
Tests On The Elaboration Of Soybean Milk, Derivatives, And Industrial Feasibility Project, Ciro Pablo Kopp Valdivia
Tests On The Elaboration Of Soybean Milk, Derivatives, And Industrial Feasibility Project, Ciro Pablo Kopp Valdivia
Theses and Dissertations
This work was done with the purpose of evaluating different forms of soybean milk processing, the product acceptance by the public, and to do a study on the feasibility for the production of milk at a small scale to be used as a nutritional supplement in school breakfasts. The soybean milk was prepared with 2 varieties "(Cristalina and Doko)" and two periods of enzymatic inactivation (Before and After) of the grain mush. The "organoleptic" quality was evaluated through surveys and its posterior statistical analysis. Parameter quality was also considered just as did the microbiologic analysis and the conservation tests. The …
The Geography Of Polynesians In Utah, Adam M. Frazier
The Geography Of Polynesians In Utah, Adam M. Frazier
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the unique history and geography of Polynesians within Utah. In particular, the historic and current migrations of Hawaiians, Samoans, and Tongans to Utah are examined, and the 1980 and 1990 distributions of Polynesians are mapped and analyzed at three scales: in the United States by state, in Utah by county, and in Salt Lake City by census tract.
Historically, Polynesia's relationship with Utah has been religious, specifically of conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints followed by migration to Utah. Today, however, things are changing. Nevertheless, Polynesians continue to migrate to Utah primarily for …
A Study Of Haitian Mormon Converts Dwelling In New York City: A Cross-Cultural Perspective In Understanding, Interpreting, And Experiencing The Mormon Subculture, Yvon Milien
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the roles played by understanding, interpretation of practices, and experience in Mormon culture when Haitians convert to Mormonism. In relationship to their previous cultural practices, this thesis explores whether Haitian converts develop one of three types of behaviors: discard old practices, retain elements of old practices, or seek to establish a balance between former and new religious practices. In-depth interviews with twelve subjects living in New York City suggest that most active converts discarded their old cultural traditions. This study suggests that only interpretation influences developing types of behavior. However, it was not expected that most converts …

James Shirley's The Politician And The Demand For Responsible Government In The Court Of Charles I, James R. Keller
James Shirley's The Politician And The Demand For Responsible Government In The Court Of Charles I, James R. Keller
Quidditas
On 13 June 1629, Dr. Lamb, a person physician and astrologer to the duke of Buckingham, while strolling down a London street was attacked by an angry mob and beaten to death. When he first noticed the crowd gathering, he summoned a group of sailors to guard him. However, incensed by years of arbitrary government, economic hardship, and war, the mob pursued Lamb with the intention of making his death an example for the duke; they called him "the Duke's Devil." As Lamb made his way toward a local tavern, the ever-increasing pack began to pummel him with stones, and …
Hrotswitha Of Gandersheim's Dulcitius And Callimachus In A New Translation, Mark L. Damen
Hrotswitha Of Gandersheim's Dulcitius And Callimachus In A New Translation, Mark L. Damen
Quidditas
Even without external corroborating evidence, we may infer from her works that the nun Hrotswitha (Hrotsvit in Saxon) lived in Saxony during the second half of the tenth century. Because she seems to have had considerable freedom of movement and expression for a woman at that time, writing about worldly affairs evidently with some personal knowledge of them, she was most likely a canoness, that is, not fully cloistered. She must have visited the courts of the Saxon kings, probably more than once, since she chronicles their exploits and composes poetry of a type briefly popularized by a scholar in …

The Delisting Bias In Crsp Data, Tyler Shumway
The Delisting Bias In Crsp Data, Tyler Shumway
Faculty Publications
I document a delisting bias in the stock return data base maintained by the Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP). I find that delists for bankruptcy and other negative reasons are generally surprises and that correct delisting returns are not available for most of the stocks that have been delisted for negative reasons since 1962. Using over-the-counter price data, I show that the omitted delisting returns are large. Implications of the bias are discussed.

On The Dynamic Behaviour Of A Thermoviscoelastic Body In Frictional Contact With A Rigid Obstacle, Kenneth Kuttler, K. T. Andrews, M. Shillor
Faculty Publications
We consider the dynamic behaviour of a thermoviscoelastic body which may come into frictional contact with a rigid obstacle. The frictional contact is modelled by general contact and friction laws which include as special cases the power law normal compliance condition and the corresponding generalization of Coulomb's law of dry friction. The stress-strain constitutive relation is assumed to be of Kelvin-Voigt type and the frictional heat generation on the contact surface is taken into account. In this setting we establish the existence of a solution to a weak version of the energy-elasticity system which consists of a parabolic equation coupled …
Three-Dimensional Display Utilizing A Diffractive Optical Element And An Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display, Gregory P. Nordin, M. W. Jones, S. T. Kowel, J. H. Kulick, R. G. Lindquist
Three-Dimensional Display Utilizing A Diffractive Optical Element And An Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display, Gregory P. Nordin, M. W. Jones, S. T. Kowel, J. H. Kulick, R. G. Lindquist
Faculty Publications
We describe the design, construction, and performance of the first real-time autostereoscopic three-dimensional (3-D) display based on the partial pixel 3-D display architecture. The primary optical components of the 3-D display are an active-matrix liquid crystal display and a diffractive optical element (DOE). The display operates at video frame rates and is driven with a conventional VGA signal. Three-dimensional animations with horizontal motion parallax are readily viewable as sets of stereo images. Formation of the virtual viewing slits by diffraction from the partial pixel apertures is experimentally verified. The measured contrast and perceived brightness of the display are excellent, but …
Distribution Of A Thermal Endemic Minnow, The Desert Dace (Eremichthys Acros), And Observations Of Impacts Of Water Diversion On Its Population, Gary L. Vinyard
Distribution Of A Thermal Endemic Minnow, The Desert Dace (Eremichthys Acros), And Observations Of Impacts Of Water Diversion On Its Population, Gary L. Vinyard
Great Basin Naturalist
Population status surveys were performed from 1987 to 1996 for desert dace (Eremichthys acros, a cyprinid endemic to several small thermal springs in Soldier Meadow, Humboldt County, Nevada, where the species occupies 7 spring areas in a single valley. Because spring distributions are patchy and all areas are not linked by surface flow, each area comprises a more-or-less isolated population, although irrigation practices or high runoff may occasionally link several of them. Although limited to thermal springpools and outflows, desert dace were found in temperatures ranging from 37° C near spring sources to 13° C in downstream areas. …
Switzerland And Burgundy In The Late Middle Ages, H. Dwight Page
Switzerland And Burgundy In The Late Middle Ages, H. Dwight Page
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In the late Middle Ages Switzerland's principal rival was the Duchy of Burgundy. Although the medieval Kingdom of Burgundy has long since vanished, in the fifteenth century Burgundy was one of the most powerful states of Europe.2Its territories included present day Belgium, Holland, the French provinces of Flanders, Alsace, Lorraine, Franche-Comte, Savoy and Burgundy, as well as the three Swiss cantons of Geneva, the Vaud and the Valais. For nearly two millennia, these territories of the old Kingdom of Burgundy have been among the most progressive in Europe. The "loi gombette" of the ancient Burgundians was the most humane of …
Book Review: The Germanic Warrior Clubs, H. Dwight Page
Book Review: The Germanic Warrior Clubs, H. Dwight Page
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Scholarship concerning the migrations of the Germanic tribes and their assimilation into the Roman Empire has been divided for centuries into essentially two schools of thought: the writings of medieval British, French and Italian authors and the historians of the French Enlightenment, such as Montesquieu and Voltaire, who perceived the Germanic migrations as destructive and malicious invasions of the Roman world; the writings of nineteenth and twentieth century German scholar-apologists, who have sought to justify the Germanic migrations by stressing that these movements were necessitated by the pressure exerted upon the Germanic tribes by the westward progressing Huns and by …
