Malwida Von Meysenbug's Memoirs Of An Idealist. Translation Of Memoiren Einer Idealistin, Monte Gardiner Mar 1999

Malwida Von Meysenbug's Memoirs Of An Idealist. Translation Of Memoiren Einer Idealistin, Monte Gardiner

Theses and Dissertations

The following translation is the first full length rendering of Malwida von Meysenbug's two-volume autobiography Memoiren einer Idealistin/Eine Reise nach Ostende into English. Meysenbug, who boasts ties to Nietzsche, Wagner, Herzen, and Saffi, was forerunner to a long line of female social democrats. She was an eyewitness to the tumultuous political events surrounding the German Revolution of 1848, and is remembered as a pioneer in education and gender issues. Meysenbug's memoirs depict nineteenth-century Europe in a dynamic state of transformation. This is a time of opposition and contradiction, when emerging philosophies and political movements vie for power with existing structures. …

Resolving Problems In Engineering Ethics: Precept And Example, Joel C. Adair Mar 1999

Resolving Problems In Engineering Ethics: Precept And Example, Joel C. Adair

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis has served to accomplish several objectives. First, a foundation was laid for the consideration of ethical factors in an engineering context. This was done by first establishing the need for ethical judgement in the engineering disciplines. A summary of several significant classical ethical theories followed, providing several tools with which to evaluate decisions that have ethical implications. Finally, the conclusion was made that the best framework for making ethical decisions is found in the application of the virtues espoused by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Determination Of A Methane Intermolecular Potential Model For Use In Molecular Simulations From Ab Initio Calculations, Richard L. Rowley, Tapani A. Pakkanen Feb 1999

Determination Of A Methane Intermolecular Potential Model For Use In Molecular Simulations From Ab Initio Calculations, Richard L. Rowley, Tapani A. Pakkanen

Faculty Publications

The possibility of obtaining an accurate site-site potential model suitable for use in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of methane from ab initio calculations has been explored. Counterpoise-corrected (CPC), supermolecule, ab initio energies at the MP2/6-311 + G(2df,2pd) level were computed for eleven relative orientations of two methane molecules as a function of C-C separation distance. C-C, C-H, and H-H interaction parameters in a pairwise-additive, site-site potential model for rigid methane molecules were regressed from the ab initio energies, and the resultant model accurately reproduced the ab initio energies. The model suggests that C-H attractions are dominant in weakly binding the …

The Miraculous Island Of Switzerland In The Midst Of The Third Reich, H. Dwight Page Feb 1999

The Miraculous Island Of Switzerland In The Midst Of The Third Reich, H. Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the film version of Hermann Wouk's War and Remembrance, the Polish Jewish professor Aaron Jastrow and his American Jewish niece Nathalie fall into the trap of the monstrous Nazi genocidal machine and are interned at Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia. Upon their arrival there, they are initially treated with brutality until Professor Jastrow reminds their Nazi captors, "We are under Swiss protection." Thereafter, they receive noticeably better treatment. Although Aaron Jastrow later perishes in a gas chamber at Auschwitz, Nathalie owes her own escape from the same camp and her eventual rescue by the Americans at Weimar, Germany in April, …

Book Review: The Wheel Of Life: A Memoir Of Living And Dying, Nicole Butz Feb 1999

Book Review: The Wheel Of Life: A Memoir Of Living And Dying, Nicole Butz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross is a remarkable, if somewhat unusual, woman. Although her views remain highly controversial and have received much criticism, it is difficult to deny the impact that she and her work have had on contemporary attitudes towards death and on the treatment of the dying and the terminally ill. Kübler-Ross first achieved fame in 1969 with the publication of On Death and Dying. The book is now considered a classic text on the subject and is required reading in many medical and nursing schools, theological seminaries, and university psychology and sociology courses. In the thirty years since its …

Book Review: Dorlikon An Der Grenze Des Wachstums. Zur Kulturgeschichte Einer Zürcher Dorfschaft Im 17. Jahrhundert., Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

This impressive study has three main sections. The author offers, first, what he titles as Erzählung, that is narrative or story. In five chapters he gives a wealth of detail about the lives of the Dorlikon families, their struggle to meet the challenges of a sometimes harsh climate, their sparse resources due to bad harvests, the resulting loss of rented farms, and the cycles of birth, procreation, and death. Their valorous strivings as well as occasional misdeeds are reconstructed with meticulous concern for exact documentation. Key documents are cited in their original seventeenth century German. What emerges is a …

A New Candidate In Arabia For The Valley Of Lemuel, George Potter Jan 1999

A New Candidate In Arabia For The Valley Of Lemuel, George Potter

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The author serendipitously discovered a stream east of the Gulf of Aqaba that seems to share the physical features of Lehi’s “river of water” that “emptied into the Red Sea” and was “continually running.” The river Laman ran through the valley of Lemuel, described as “firm, steadfast, and immovable.” The stream and the canyon seem to fulfill the conditions of the river of Laman and the valley of Lemuel.

New Light: The So-Called Lehi Cave, Lamar C. Berrett Jan 1999

New Light: The So-Called Lehi Cave, Lamar C. Berrett

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Berrett discusses point by point reasons why an ancient burial complex at Khirbet Beit Lei, sometimes called “Lehi’s cave,” is unlikely to have Book of Mormon connections. Brown describes a carved altar inscribed to the tribe Nihm discovered in the southwest Arabian peninsula (Yemen)—this location may be the place Nahom where Nephi’s father-in-law, Ishmael, was buried, according to the Book of Mormon record. The characters on the Anthon transcript reportedly taken by Martin Harris to New York to show to Professor Charles Anthon bear resemblance to characters on two Mexican seals made of baked clay. Szink identifies another possible Semitic …

Tireless In His Service: Rasmus Andersen, Pastor And Author 1878-1924, Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

Of the four founders of the Danish Lutheran Church in America in 1872, the one concerning whom the most information exists is Rasmus Andersen. Yet it has been my observation that comparatively little is known about him. A reason for this is that, to my knowledge, no comprehensive biography exists, and there is almost nothing available in the English language. Most of the material that does exist is to be found in the Danes World Wide Archives ("Udvandrerarkivet") in Aalborg, Denmark. According to Birgit Flemming Larsen, who oversees that archive, the Andersen collection is the largest at the Aalborg archive. …

Chiasmus Bibliography, John W. Welch, Daniel B. Mckinlay Jan 1999

Chiasmus Bibliography, John W. Welch, Daniel B. Mckinlay

Maxwell Institute Publications

Introduction

John W. Welch

In 1978, my colleagues and I completed our work on Chiasmus in Antiquity, which was published in 1981 by Gerstenberg Verlag in Hildesheim, Germany. That volume contained a bibliography generated mainly by Robert F. Smith. Over the past two decades, I have continued to collect bibliographical information on numerous books and articles that either speak about or make use of chiasmus. Those additional sources have been included here, expanding the earlier bibliography, in an effort to be as comprehensive as possible. These items are presented alphabetically by author, and again in four main categories. Brief annotations …

The Temple In Time And Eternity, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks Jan 1999

The Temple In Time And Eternity, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks

Maxwell Institute Publications

The Temple in Time and Eternity, edited by Donald W. Parry and Stephen D. Ricks, is the second volume in the series Temples Through The Ages. The importance of the temple to a religious community of the Ancient Near East and Mediterranean world can scarcely be exaggerated. The eleven articles in this volume are divided topically into three sections: “Temple in Ritual,” “Temples in the Israelite Tradition,” and “Temples in the Non-Israelite Tradition.”

The “Temple in Ritual” section features Hugh Nibley’s discussion on “Abraham’s Temple Drama,” which identifies elements of the creation drama that appear in the book of …

Illuminating The Sermon At The Temple And Sermon On The Mount, John W. Welch Jan 1999

Illuminating The Sermon At The Temple And Sermon On The Mount, John W. Welch

Maxwell Institute Publications

Understanding the Sermon on the Mount (meaning both texts in their shared, collective meaning) as a temple text reveals that it has far more power and unity than a mere collection of miscellaneous sayings of Jesus. John W. Welch examines the teachings and commandments of the Sermon on the Mount in its Book of Mormon setting—at the Nephite temple, in connection with sacred ordinances of covenant making. This context opens new insights into the meaning and significance of the Sermon whereby readers never again see the Sermon the same.

Illuminating the Sermon at the Temple & Sermon on the Mount …

Playing The Waiting Game: The Life And Letters Of Elizabeth Wolley, Elizabeth Mccutcheon Jan 1999

Playing The Waiting Game: The Life And Letters Of Elizabeth Wolley, Elizabeth Mccutcheon

Quidditas

Almost fifty years ago Wallace Notestein, an English historian, commented that while both the men and the women of late-sixteenth- and early-seventeenth-century England remain "strangers" and “shadowy figures” to us, the women are “much more shadowy.” Pointing out that “Our knowledge of women comes largely from the incidental mention of them by men who seldom took pains to characterize and individualize them,” he insisted that “It is as individuals that we must know them, if we are to understand them as members of a sex.” Obviously a great deal has changed for the better. We know much more about the …

Learning To Be Looked At: The Portrait Of [The Artist As A] Young Woman In Agnès Merlet’S Artemisia, Sheila Ffolliott Jan 1999

Learning To Be Looked At: The Portrait Of [The Artist As A] Young Woman In Agnès Merlet’S Artemisia, Sheila Ffolliott

Quidditas

Agnès Merlet's 1997 film Artemisia opens with a full-screen, tight close-up of an eye, under a sepia veiling effect that prevents its appearing overly clinical. The image provides an effective introduction to issues this film about a seventeenth-century woman-artist explores. We might expect a film about a visual artist to concern that person’s eye. We also expect film, itself a visual medium, to fascinate the eye of the spectator. But rather than simply confirm such expectations, this filmic eye unsettles. First, because of the extremity of the close-up, we see only part of the eye. Then, although it stares directly …

“There Is Nothing More Divine Than These, Except Man”: Thomas Moffett And Insect Sociality, Monique Bourque Jan 1999

“There Is Nothing More Divine Than These, Except Man”: Thomas Moffett And Insect Sociality, Monique Bourque

Quidditas

When Thoomas Moffett wrote in the Theater of Insects that "there is nothing more divine than these, except Man," he asked his readers some pointed questions about insects, and made some blunt statements:

where is Nature more to be seen than in the smallest matters, where she is entirely all? for in great bodies the workmanship is easie, the matter being ductile; but in these that are so small and despicable, and almost nothing, what care? how great is the effect of it? how unspeakable is the perfection? ... Do you require Prudence? regard the Ant; Do you desire Justice? …

“Sad Stories Of The Death Of Kings”: Lyric And Narrative Release From Confining Spaces In Shakespeare’S Richard Ii, Jennifer C. Vaught Jan 1999

“Sad Stories Of The Death Of Kings”: Lyric And Narrative Release From Confining Spaces In Shakespeare’S Richard Ii, Jennifer C. Vaught

Quidditas

The relation of Shakespeare's plays to other literary forms like lyric and narrative is a topic that continues to invite speculation. A number of his plays contain songs and sonnets, reported stories and winter’s tales. In this essay I examine lyrics and narratives in Richard II and their dialogic relation to the surrounding text. In a play about a self-enclosed King these utterances tend to occur in enclosures: Richard delivers lyrics while immured at Flint Castle and the dungeon at Pomfret, whereas his Queen laments in an enclosed garden and promises to tell the King’s story during her exile in …
