Statistical Continuum Theory For Large Plastic Deformation Of Polycrystalline Materials, Brent L. Adams, S. Ahzi, H. Garmestani, S. Lin

Faculty Publications

This paper focuses on the application of statistical continuum mechanics to the prediction of mechanical response of polycrystalline materials and microstructure evolution under large plastic deformations. A statistical continuum mechanics formulation is developed by applying a Green's function solution to the equations of stress equilibrium in an infinite domain. The distribution and morphology of grains (crystals) in polycrystalline materials is represented by a set of correlation functions that are described by the corresponding probability functions. The elastic deformation is neglected and a viscoplastic power law is employed for crystallographic slip in single crystals. In this formulation, two- and three-point probability …

John Adams, The Second President Of The United States, And Switzerland, Paul Widmer

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Writing on a topic such as· John Adams and Switzerland', to a large extent means dealing with the roots of the American Constitution from a rather peculiar standpoint. In order not to mislead the reader about the modest importance of this undertaking, I would like to tell an anecdote at the outset.

Diet Switching And Food Delivery By Shrubsteppe Passerines In Response To An Experimental Reduction In Food, Frank P. Howe, Richard L. Knight, Lowell C. Mcewen, T. Luke George May 2000

Diet Switching And Food Delivery By Shrubsteppe Passerines In Response To An Experimental Reduction In Food, Frank P. Howe, Richard L. Knight, Lowell C. Mcewen, T. Luke George

Western North American Naturalist

We experimentally reduced the food base of nesting Brewer's Sparrows (Spizella breweri) and Sage Thrashers (Oreoscoptes montanus) in a shrubsteppe region of south central Idaho in 1989 and 1990. Frequency and mass of "birdfood" arthropods in pitfall, sweep net, and stickyboard samples were generally lower on sites treated with a broad-spectrum insecticide (malathion) than on untreated sites though the effect varied among taxa. In 1990 O. montanus switched nestling diets to prey taxa not affected by the treatment. Time between nestling food deliveries was greater for S. breweri on the treated than untreated site in 1989. …

Effects Of Cattle Grazing On North American Arid Ecosystems: A Quantitative Review, Allison Jones May 2000

Effects Of Cattle Grazing On North American Arid Ecosystems: A Quantitative Review, Allison Jones

Western North American Naturalist

A quantitative review was conducted of the effects of cattle grazing in arid systems on 16 response variables ranging from soil bulk density to total vegetative cover to rodent species diversity. Various studies from North American arid environments that used similar measures for assessing grazing effects on the same response variables were used for the review; each study was assigned to serve as a single data point in paired comparisons of grazed versus ungrazed sites. All analyses tested the 1-tailed null hypothesis that grazing has no effect on the measured variable. Eleven of 16 analyses (69%) revealed significant detrimental effects …

Rural Towns As Partners In The Utilization Of Financial Credit: A Viable Option For Accelerated Development In Africa, Napoleon Bamfo

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

One option of development that governments in Africa can pursue but which does not appear to have crossed their minds, is encouraging towns, represented as incorporated units, to borrow financial credit. There are several reasons why this appears to be a viable option of development. No government has the financial capacity to address the social and developmental needs of every town under its jurisdiction. A government that encourages or makes it easy for individual towns to utilize credit available from financial institutions, therefore, will be opening a hitherto underutilized component of development in the form of local savings and entrepreneurship …

Tomizo And Tokujiro: The First Japanese Mormons, Shinji Takagi Apr 2000

Tomizo And Tokujiro: The First Japanese Mormons, Shinji Takagi

BYU Studies

In August 1901, Heber J. Grant and his companions arrived in Japan to open the first permanent mission in Asia and begin their difficult proselyting labors among the Japanese. It took them almost seven long months to claim the first fruit of their labors. On March 8, 1902, on the shore of Omori in Tokyo Bay, Hajime Nakazawa, a professed Shinto priest, was baptized, confirmed, and ordained an elder. This event was symbolic indeed. For one thing, Nakazawa was presumably affiliated with a religious sect whose roots went back to the ancient indigenous religion of Japan. For another, more interestingly, …

How The News Media Tell The Story Of The Yanomami: A Qualitative Study Of Narrative Coherence And The Ideal Audience, Tania H. Cantrell Apr 2000

How The News Media Tell The Story Of The Yanomami: A Qualitative Study Of Narrative Coherence And The Ideal Audience, Tania H. Cantrell

Theses and Dissertations

The news media link anthropological discovery and the communications discipline. In this study, press stories about the Yanomami Indians of northern Brazil and neighboring Venezuela have been studied and narratively analyzed according to Narrative Paradigm Theory. While not an audience study, plausible interpretations of ideal audience member values and insights into the question of human identity are presented. It is argued that the media are storytellers who tell the audience about itself by telling it about others recursively.

Press coverage of the Yanomami is divided into eight general categories. These include the environment, effects of "civilization," warfare/violence, massacre, gold miners, …

The Application Of Microcredit Technology To The Uk: Key Commercial And Policy Issues, Rosalind Copisarow

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

This article addresses the following issues: who needs microcredit in the UK, what is the extent of the unmet demand across the country, what are the precise terms and conditions required by microentrepreneurs, how repayment rates of at least 95% can be expected, and how an institution making microcredits can become self-financing within six years. The article also describes the main barriers faced by microcredit institutions in the UK and offers solutions to obtaining funds from the private, public, and voluntary sectors and to operating within a legal and regulatory framework that permits microcredit institutions to serve their clients with …

The Dance Of First Beginnings: Contemporary Maya Creation Rituals In A World Context, Allen J. Christenson Apr 2000

The Dance Of First Beginnings: Contemporary Maya Creation Rituals In A World Context, Allen J. Christenson

BYU Studies

A nearly universal characteristic of ancient societies is to periodically carry out ceremonies and festivals intended to renew life, particularly in connection with the creation of the world. Many of these ceremonies are tied to New Year's celebrations, linking the start of the calendar year with the beginning of time itself. Such ceremonies reinforce the notion that when the world left the hands of deity at the time of its birth, it had greater power to sustain life and nurture its inhabitants. But as with all things, the passage of time and the wear and tear of day-to-day existence inevitably …

Initial Negotiations, Donald Tritt, Erdmann Schmocker, Leo Schelbert, R. Steven Wisdom, Kent Anderson

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Initiation of a Potential SAHS Swiss American Center (SAC) Project: From the Minutes of the SAHS Annual Meeting, held on October 10, 1998 at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D. C., Dr. Sabine. Jessner, Secretary: "Donald Tritt asked the members to consider the creation of a Swiss American Center to preserve and foster Swiss-American culture. He had literature on ethnic centers created by Americans of Danish, Norwegian, Irish, and other ethnic backgrounds. A Swiss Center might include museum exhibition space, meeting facilities, a library, and an archive. Discussion followed. This possibility met with enthusiastic response. Among those speaking in …
