When The Lights Went Out: Three Studies On The Ancient Apostasy, Hugh Nibley Jan 2001

When The Lights Went Out: Three Studies On The Ancient Apostasy, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

When the Lights Went Out contains reprints of three classic Nibley essays on the fate of the primitive Christian church and its institutions and beliefs. In “The Passing of the Primitive Church,” Nibley presents forty striking and often neglected facets of church history. “The Forty-Day Mission of Christ” deals with the historical relevance of Acts 1:3, which claims that after Christ’s resurrection, he was “seen of them forty days, and [spoke] of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.” Nibley discusses the implications of the loss of the temple during the fall of Jerusalem in his “Christian Envy of …

Latin Grammar In The Cathedral School: Fulbert Of Chartres, Bonipert Of Pécs, And The Way Of A Lost Priscian Manuscript, Elöd Nemerkényi Jan 2001

Latin Grammar In The Cathedral School: Fulbert Of Chartres, Bonipert Of Pécs, And The Way Of A Lost Priscian Manuscript, Elöd Nemerkényi

Quidditas

The starting point of the classical tradition in medieval Hungary is marked by a letter written by Bishop Fulbert of Chartres in Northern France to Bishop Bonipert of Pécs in Southern Hungary. In this letter, dated by its editor to 1023, Fulbert assured his colleague, Bonipert that he was going to send him one of his copies of Priscian: “Our son and your faithful servant Hilduin has told us of your gestures of charity toward us and dutifully stated that you would like one of our copies of Priscian. We are happy to send this by him, and whatever else …

“True” History And Political Theory: The Problematic Orthodoxy Of The Troublesome Raigne Of King John, Cynthia Bowers Jan 2001

“True” History And Political Theory: The Problematic Orthodoxy Of The Troublesome Raigne Of King John, Cynthia Bowers

Quidditas

The anonymous Troublesome Raigne of King John was performed by the Queen's Men probably during the height of the Armada crisis; it appeared in print in 1591. The play's few critics unanimously conclude that it is essentially a work of propaganda, a monument to Tudor orthodoxy and its principal buttress, obedience doctrine. Scott McMillin and Sally-Beth MacLean, recent historians of the Queen’s Men, add to the critical consensus their belief that Troublesome Raigne, like other Queen’s Men’s plays, attempts to convey “true” history, i.e., history consistent with official Tudor political and religious policy. The formation of the company and …

Metacognitive Expressions In La Respuesta A Sor Filotea, A Seventeenth-Century Text By Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Alfredo Urzúa B. Jan 2001

Metacognitive Expressions In La Respuesta A Sor Filotea, A Seventeenth-Century Text By Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Alfredo Urzúa B.

Quidditas

In the Respuesta de la poetisa a la muy ilustre Sor Filotea de la Cruz, her famous letter/treatise, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648/51–1695) eloquently defends her right to study, learn, write poetry, and pursue academic matters. In this document, Sor Juana repeatedly refers to her intellectual activities as arising from an innate desire in her. This “desire to know,” that she “knows not whether to take as a Heaven-sent favor or as a punishment,” was indeed a recurrent theme in her mental explorations. Sor Juana’s Respuesta a Sor Filotea constitutes an extraordinary example of an early essay-like …

Since Pre-Colombian time corn already formed part of the diet in Aztec and Mayan cultures, and actually represented in them a fountain of wealth and power. The cultivation is utilized in the region in multiple forms, not only for the human diet, but also as feed for animals. Corn is third place in the world production, following wheat and rice. Believing In The Atoning Power Of Christ, Kerry M. Muhlestein Jan 2001

Believing In The Atoning Power Of Christ, Kerry M. Muhlestein

Faculty Publications

The book of Deuteronomy begins with a striking verse: "(There are eleven days journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea)" (Deuteronomy 1:2). Because this verse is set within parentheses and seems to relay minutia, it is easily passed over. But a close examination shows it to be one of the most thought-provoking verses in the Old Testament. Identifying two of the sites referred to in the verse makes this clear. Horeb is another name for Mount Sinai. Kadesh-barnea is the place where Moses and the children of Israel camped as they sent men into the promised …

A Two-Level Implementation For Lushootseed Morphology, Deryle W. Lonsdale Jan 2001

A Two-Level Implementation For Lushootseed Morphology, Deryle W. Lonsdale

Faculty Publications

This paper describes the implementatio of a computer system that processes Lushootseed word forms. Built on the two-level model and leveraging finite-state technology, the system is able both to parse surface forms to arives at the underlying morphemic decomposition, and to generate surface forms given such a representation. Components of the system are discussed including the lexicon architecture, rule formulation and specification, ans the word-structurer grammar. Issues relevant to processing Lushootseed are discussed including reduplication, allomorphic variation, inflectional and derivational affixation, and morphophonemic alternations.

Non-Social Play As A Risk Factor In Social And Emotional Development, Charissa S. L. Cheah, Larry J. Nelson, Kenneth H. Rubin Jan 2001

Non-Social Play As A Risk Factor In Social And Emotional Development, Charissa S. L. Cheah, Larry J. Nelson, Kenneth H. Rubin

Faculty Publications

Children spend much of their youthful energy engaged in play. Indeed, play, in its various forms, represents a serious business – not only for the active participations, but also for students of the phenomenon. To many researchers, play is viewed as a generative fore in children's social, emotional, and cognitive development (see Rubin, Fein, & Vandenberg, 1983; Saracho & Spodek, 1998; Fromberg & Bergen, 1998). The extent to which children engage in play with others is of added developmental significance. In light of the complexity and developmental significance of children's play and especially play with peers, it seems important to …

Alma O. Taylor's Fact-Finding Mission To China, Reid L. Neilson Jan 2001

Alma O. Taylor's Fact-Finding Mission To China, Reid L. Neilson

BYU Studies

In 1909, after serving as a mission president in Japan for eight years, native Utah Mormon Alma O. Taylor visited China as directed by leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to determine if Mormon missionaries should be sent there. Taylor did not speak Chinese, so he drew his conclusions by speaking to native English speakers living in China, often Protestant missionaries. Excerpts of Taylor's original report are published here, revealing some of the prejudices and perspectives Westerners had regarding China in the early 1900s. The author also supplies historical information about Mormon missionary work in Japan …

Mormons In The Press: Reactions To The 1901 Opening Of The Japan Mission, Shinji Takagi Jan 2001

Mormons In The Press: Reactions To The 1901 Opening Of The Japan Mission, Shinji Takagi

BYU Studies

During the first month when a Mormon Apostle and three missionaries arrived to begin proselytizing work in Japan, the local and national press published at least 160 articles on Mormonism, many of the articles appearing on the front page. The media attention was unprecedented for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in that country. Here the author explores the reaction from the Japanese press toward Mormons, the social and historical context that led to such interest, and some of the media controversies that arose. The author concludes that one of the biggest reasons Mormons received such attention when …
