A Texture Evolution Model In Cubic-Orthotropic Polycrystalline System, Brent L. Adams, H. Garmestani, D. S. Li
Faculty Publications
This work has been funded under the AFOSR Grant # F49620-03-1-0011 and Army Research Lab Contract # DAAD17-02-P-0398 and DAAD 19-01-1-0742. B.L. Adams acknowledges support of Army Research Office, Proposal No. 42566-MS. The authors express their sincere gratitude to Professor Surya Kalidindi, for helpful suggestions and correspondence for the derivation of the processing path functions. A new methodology based on a conservation principle in the orientation space is developed to simulate the texture evolution in a cubic-orthotropic polycrystalline system. A least squares error method was used to improve the accuracy of the simulation results obtained from the texture evolution function. …
Schema Matching And Data Extraction Over Html Tables, Cui Tao
Schema Matching And Data Extraction Over Html Tables, Cui Tao
Theses and Dissertations
Data on the Web in HTML tables is mostly structured, but we usually do not know the structure in advance. Thus, we cannot directly query for data of interest. We propose a solution to this problem for the case of mostly structured data in the form of HTML tables, based on document-independent extraction ontologies. The solution entails elements of table location and table understanding, data integration, and wrapper creation. Table location and understanding allows us to locate the table of interest, recognize attributes and values, pair attributes with values, and form records. Data-integration techniques allow us to match source records …

Target Sets: A Tool For Understanding And Predicting The Behavior Of Interacting Q-Learners, Nancy Fulda, Dan A. Ventura
Target Sets: A Tool For Understanding And Predicting The Behavior Of Interacting Q-Learners, Nancy Fulda, Dan A. Ventura
Faculty Publications
Reinforcement learning agents that interact in a common environment frequently affect each others’ perceived transition and reward distributions. This can result in convergence of the agents to a sub-optimal equilibrium or even to a solution that is not an equilibrium at all. Several modifications to the Q-learning algorithm have been proposed which enable agents to converge to optimal equilibria under specified conditions. This paper presents the concept of target sets as an aid to understanding why these modifications have been successful and as a tool to assist in the development of new modifications which are applicable in a wider range …

The New Economy Is Dead, Long Live The Information Economy, Phillip J. Bryson
The New Economy Is Dead, Long Live The Information Economy, Phillip J. Bryson
Faculty Publications
The arrival of the 2001-2003 recession caused many to suppose that the so-called "New Economy" was now defunct. This article addresses a number of related issues, including the question of the durability and viability of business cycles in the face of the technological developments of the information age. It asks what went wrong with the New Economy and examines its characteristics as well as its remaining possibilities and prospects for the future. Finally, it considers the spread of the Information Economy to Europe, especially to Germany, the country that one might expect to be the leading European player, but which …
Epidemiology Of Ustilago Bullata Berk. On Bromus Tectorum L. And Implication For Biological Control, Toupta Boguena
Epidemiology Of Ustilago Bullata Berk. On Bromus Tectorum L. And Implication For Biological Control, Toupta Boguena
Theses and Dissertations
The seedling-infecting pathogen Ustilago bullata Berk. is a naturally occurring biological control agent for cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.). The effects of temperature and nutrients on pathogen teliospore germination behavior and the effects of temperature on host seed germination were examined. The effects of temperature on sporidial proliferation, host infection in a temperature-controlled environment and in a field setting for eight populations were investigated. The infection success of Ustilago bullata on Bromus tectorum in cultivated fields as a function of seeding date, inoculation method, inoculum density, supplemental watering, and litter was also investigated. Teliospores germinated faster on potato dextrose agar than …
Northern Saw-Whet Owl (Aegolius Acadicus) Migration In The Pacific Northwest, Graham G. Frye, Richard P. Gerhardt
Northern Saw-Whet Owl (Aegolius Acadicus) Migration In The Pacific Northwest, Graham G. Frye, Richard P. Gerhardt
Western North American Naturalist
Northern Saw-whet Owls (Aegolius acadicus) were captured in north central Oregon, USA, during autumn 1999 and 2000 as a pilot study on migration in the Pacific states. We captured 70 individuals, with annual capture rates comparable to those reported for larger studies in the eastern and Midwestern U.S. We investigated differential capture by time of night, time of season, and age. No results were significant due to small samples and brief duration of the study, although some results tended toward significance (P < 0.10). Here we provide a descriptive account of our observations of Northern Saw-whet Owl migration in north central Oregon, the first such study to be presented for the Pacific states.
Distributional Information On Birds From Egg Sets Collected By Henry Rogers Durkee In 1870 In Southwestern Wyoming, Douglas B. Mcnair, James P. Dean
Distributional Information On Birds From Egg Sets Collected By Henry Rogers Durkee In 1870 In Southwestern Wyoming, Douglas B. Mcnair, James P. Dean
Western North American Naturalist
Henry Rogers Durkee collected 74 egg sets of 27 avian species in 1870 at Gilmer, Uinta County, in southwestern Wyoming. Despite the paucity of documented breeding evidence from this region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, his material at the Smithsonian Institution was generally overlooked and has never been critically examined. Durkee's egg sets included 5 species (Sandhill Crane, Grus candensis; Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Stelgidoteryx serripennis; Grasshopper Sparrow, Ammodramus savannarum; Fox Sparrow, Passerella iliaca; Cassin's Finch, Carpodacus cassinii) whose breeding distribution was then poorly known, 25 to more than 70 years before nests …
Latter-Day Saints In Popular National Periodicals 1970-1981, Adam H. Nielson
Latter-Day Saints In Popular National Periodicals 1970-1981, Adam H. Nielson
Theses and Dissertations
The public image of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the product of several factors. This thesis investigates that image as presented in national periodicals from 1970 to 1981. During this time "Mormons" and "Mormonism" was a popular topic as the religion gained notoriety, and as an awareness of its peculiar beliefs and practices increased.
The rationale for using national magazines to assess public image is the assumption that they "reflect prevailing points of view" and help "formulate public opinion." Since popular attitudes are one of the factors that influence how the Church is accepted in the …
What's In A Word?: The Language Of Scriptures, Cynthia L. Hallen
What's In A Word?: The Language Of Scriptures, Cynthia L. Hallen
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
A two-pronged approach to studying the scriptures emphasizes language as well as doctrine. Some typical syntactic structures that appear in 19th-century Book of Mormon English include word-order variation, interruption, parenthesis, ellipsis, fragment, conjunctions, and parallel structure.
Counting To Ten, John W. Welch
Counting To Ten, John W. Welch
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The regular occurrence of things occurring ten times in the scriptures tends to relate to perfection, especially divine completion. Welch approaches this phenomenon through ten topics: perfection, worthiness, consecration, testing, justice, reverence, penitence, atonement, supplication, and ascension into the holy of holies or highest degree of heaven. The significance of the number ten in the ancient world relates to the tenfold occurrences in the Book of Mormon.
Had For Good And Evil: 19th-Century Literary Treatments Of The Book Of Mormon, Richard H. Cracroft
Had For Good And Evil: 19th-Century Literary Treatments Of The Book Of Mormon, Richard H. Cracroft
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Moroni prophesied on 21 September 1823 that Joseph’s name, and by implication the book he would eventually translate and publish, should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues. Many current criticisms of the Book of Mormon trace their roots to the antagonistic critiques by 19th-century authors, beginning with Abner Cole, Alexander Campbell, and E. D. Howe. Campbell in particular was responsible for introducing the environmental theory: that Joseph Smith introduced 19th-century elements into his story. Travelers to Salt Lake City published their exposés, which were mostly critical of the Latter-day Saints and their book of …

Real-Time Adaptive Cancellation Of Satellite Interference In Radio Astronomy, Andrew Joseph Poulsen
Real-Time Adaptive Cancellation Of Satellite Interference In Radio Astronomy, Andrew Joseph Poulsen
Theses and Dissertations
Radio astronomy is the science of observing the heavens at radio frequencies, from a few kHz to approximately 300 GHz. In recent years, radio astronomy has faced a growing interference problem as radio frequency (RF) bandwidth has become an increasingly scarce commodity. A programmable real-time DSP least-mean-square interference canceller was developed and demonstrated as a successful method of excising satellite down-link signals from both an experimental platform at BYU, and the Green Bank Telescope at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in West Virginia. A performance analysis of this cancellation system in the radio astronomy radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation regime …
Reducing Learning Object Inspection/Evaluation Costs In Instructional Design, Larry Lynn Seawright
Reducing Learning Object Inspection/Evaluation Costs In Instructional Design, Larry Lynn Seawright
Theses and Dissertations
A widely employed instructional design approach, the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model, has been one of the most popular and well documented instructional design models (Wilson, Jonassen, and Cole, 1993) for decades. Despite its widespread use, Thiagarajan, a leading instructional technologist, asserts that ADDIE, as an instructional design approach, is comparable to an outdated 1950's manufacturing model (Zemke, 2002). Since the 1950's, manufacturing has evolved, focusing initially on reducing inspection or evaluation costs and later on shifting these cost improvements throughout the organization. Just as manufacturing models and their application have evolved, service operations models such as instructional …
Ruling Powers, Scot A. Hanson
Ruling Powers, Scot A. Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
While the fantasy genre is one of the most widely read modes of writing, literary criticism and academic discussion of the genre takes place at a much lower level. This imbalance has developed in part because of a misconception that fantasy genre writings cannot accomplish significant, literary purposes. This thesis first offers an argument for why the fantasy genre should receive more attention in scholarly circles, then presents an excerpt of a fantasy novel. The argument draws from the limited amount of existing criticism to highlight the strengths of the fantasy genre, building a case that, in most respects, works …
