The Role Of Prolactin In Ccl28 Regulation, Jennie Hyde Mar 2007

The Role Of Prolactin In Ccl28 Regulation, Jennie Hyde

Theses and Dissertations

Infants are born with naive immune systems, making them susceptible to a variety of infections. In order to protect the newborn infant it is important that mothers be able to pass protective IgA antibodies to their infants through breast milk. B cells that produce IgA enter the mammary tissue during lactation and secrete IgA into the milk. During pregnancy, the mammary tissue expresses high levels of chemokines, molecules that allow lymphocytes to selectively home to specific tissues. The chemokine CCL28 has been shown to be upregulated during both pregnancy and lactation, and is vital for the ability of IgA-producing B …

The Role Of Ultrasound Cavitation In Liposome Size Reduction, William G. Pitt, Eric S. Richardson, Dixon J. Woodbury Mar 2007

The Role Of Ultrasound Cavitation In Liposome Size Reduction, William G. Pitt, Eric S. Richardson, Dixon J. Woodbury

Faculty Publications

Liposome size is a vital parameter of many quantitative biophysical studies. Sonication, or exposure to ultrasound, is used widely to manufacture artificial liposomes, yet little is known about the mechanism by which liposomes are affected by ultrasound. Cavitation, or the oscillation of small gas bubbles in a pressure-varying field, has been shown to be responsible for many biophysical effects of ultrasound on cells. Collapse cavitation is manifested in the acoustic spectrum by an f/2 subharmonic and an increase in broadband noise. In this study, we attempted to correlate the presence of cavitation with a decrease in liposome size. Lipid suspensions …

Live Surface, Christopher J. Armstrong Feb 2007

Live Surface, Christopher J. Armstrong

Theses and Dissertations

Live Surface allows users to segment and render complex surfaces from 3D image volumes at interactive (sub-second) rates using a novel, Cascading Graph Cut (CGC). Live Surface consists of two phases. (1) Preprocessing for generation of a complete 3D watershed hierarchy followed by tracking of all catchment basin surfaces. (2) User interaction in which, with each mouse movement, the 3D object is selected and rendered in real time. Real-time segmentation is ccomplished by cascading through the 3D watershed hierarchy from the top, applying graph cut successively at each level only to catchment basins bordering the segmented surface from the previous …

A Coarse Grain Model For Dna, Thomas A. Knotts, Nitin Rathore, David C. Schwartz, Juan J. De Pablo Feb 2007

A Coarse Grain Model For Dna, Thomas A. Knotts, Nitin Rathore, David C. Schwartz, Juan J. De Pablo

Faculty Publications

Understanding the behavior of DNA at the molecular level is of considerable fundamental and engineering importance. While adequate representations of DNA exist at the atomic and continuum level, there is a relative lack of models capable of describing the behavior of DNA at mesoscopic length scales. We present a mesoscale model of DNA that reduces the complexity of a nucleotide to three interactions sites, one each for the phosphate, sugar, and base, thereby rendering the investigation of DNA up to a few microns in length computationally tractable. The charges on these sites are considered explicitly. The model is parametrized using …

The Impact Of Ethnic Identity On Student Achievement In China: A Meta Analysis, Xinyi Wu Feb 2007

The Impact Of Ethnic Identity On Student Achievement In China: A Meta Analysis, Xinyi Wu

Theses and Dissertations

There have been concerns about low educational achievement of ethnic minority students in China. Previous studies have explored this area, especially in regard to the relationship between economic backwardness and achievement. However, a new field of study examines ethnic identity being considered as a cause of low achievement. This study is to use meta-analysis to determine the aggregate results of current research on the effects of self-identity on ethnic minority students and their achievement in China. The literature has been collected through searching library holdings, and online electronic resource search. Different levels of identity construction are discussed. This thesis concludes …

Fostering Creativity Through A Nonlinear Approach To Teaching Technology At Wood River Middle School, Warren Edgar Hull

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to address the following research questions: 1) what is the current status of creativity research in a typical classroom, and 2) how does an instance of exemplary teaching serve to encourage creativity in a technology education setting? The first research question is focused on through a thorough review of published literature on creativity in order to frame the second research question. The second research question is addressed by understanding how Mr. Brad Thode, the technology teacher at Wood River Middle School in Hailey, Idaho, encourages his students to be creative. By investigating this one …

Killing Laban: The Birth Of Sovereignty In The Nephite Constitutional Order, Val Larsen Jan 2007

Killing Laban: The Birth Of Sovereignty In The Nephite Constitutional Order, Val Larsen

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The slaying of Laban has been a stumbling block for many readers of the Book of Mormon. Although Laban appeared to have legally merited the execution, any explanation of the act is unsatisfactory if Nephi is considered to be acting as an individual. Larsen illustrates that Nephi was acting as a sovereign, with a clear political purpose. When Lehi offered a sacrifice in the Valley of Lemuel, his family became a separate people, with Nephi repeatedly promised the role of ruler. Nephi’s symbolic and literal assuming of this sovereign authority through the act of killing Laban is explained through six …

The Hunt For The Valley Of Lemuel, S. Kent Brown Jan 2007

The Hunt For The Valley Of Lemuel, S. Kent Brown

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

A canyon in northwestern Arabia, Wadi Tayyib al-Ism, appears to be a strong candidate for the Valley of Lemuel in the Book of Mormon. Although its rare year-round stream seems to confirm this site as the valley, other locations must be considered. Brown gives arguments both in favor of and against three other propositions, all of which are within a few dozen miles of Wadi Tayyib al-Ism. The aspects of the river and the Red Sea, the drainage areas of wadis, and the character of the valley are all evaluated. Despite his one serious objection to Wadi Tayyib al-Ism—the difficulty …

Straight (Not Strait) And Narrow, John S. Welch Jan 2007

Straight (Not Strait) And Narrow, John S. Welch

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Between 1830 and 1981, all printed editions of the Book of Mormon contained the phrase ” straight and narrow path [or course]” in four verses. The change in 1981 to “strait and narrow path [or course]” has been supported by several arguments, including the lack of the phrase “straight and narrow” in the King James version of the Bible. Welch counters this argument with the history of the introduction and rise of the phrase “straight and narrow” among Western authors. Working through each of the other arguments and offering his own counterarguments and evidences, he delivers his opinion that these …

For The Peace Of The People: War And Democracy In The Book Of Mormon, Ryan W. Davis Jan 2007

For The Peace Of The People: War And Democracy In The Book Of Mormon, Ryan W. Davis

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

King Benjamin, in an attempt to establish and promote peace, created a form of government that may be understood as democratic. The political system is not a democracy in the way the term is understood today, but the democratic elements become especially clear when viewed next to its autocratic Lamanite counterpart. Davis demonstrates how a democratic system tends to bring more peace to a nation and, interestingly, also more victory when war does come upon them. The young Nephite state encountered the types of risks experienced in the modern progression to democracy, further illustrating how difficult a task it would …

From Alps To Alpnet (And Beyond), Deryle W. Lonsdale Jan 2007

From Alps To Alpnet (And Beyond), Deryle W. Lonsdale

Faculty Publications

Nestled in the Wasatch range of the Rocky Mountains in northern Utah lies scenic Utah Valley. Home to Brigham Young University (BYU) and a host of foreign-speaking residents, the setting also served as a hotbed throughout the 1980's for the machine translation (MT) industry. To fully appreciate this narrative the chronologically prior story of BYU's Translation Sciences Institute (TSI)—which has not yet been written— would need to be consulted. When the Church1 withdrew funding for the project, the TSI team disbanded. Some former participants remained at BYU, others left the university to work for industrial corporations, and the majority remained …

High-Frequency Ultrasound Drug Delivery And Cavitation, Mario Alfonso Diaz Jan 2007

High-Frequency Ultrasound Drug Delivery And Cavitation, Mario Alfonso Diaz

Theses and Dissertations

The viability of a drug delivery system which encapsulates chemotherapeutic drugs (Doxorubicin) in the hydrophobic core of polymeric micelles and triggers release by ultrasound application was investigated at an applied frequency of 500 kHz. The investigation also included elucidating the mechanism of drug release at 70 kHz, a frequency which had previously been shown to induce drug release. A fluorescence detection chamber was used to measure in vitro drug release from both Pluronic and stabilized micelles and a hydrophone was used to monitor bubble activity during the experiments. A threshold for release between 0.35 and 0.40 in mechanical index was …

Skuery: Manipulation Of S-Expressions Using Xquery Techniques, Kevin Burke Tew Jan 2007

Skuery: Manipulation Of S-Expressions Using Xquery Techniques, Kevin Burke Tew

Theses and Dissertations

Data query operations inside programming languages presently perform their functions through the use of domain-specific, declarative expressions and by way of course-grain, API library calls. These methods of operation are practiced by relational databases as well as semistructured XML data stores. Layers of translation, which are necessary to transform data and instructions from the domain of programming languages to data query systems, negtatively effect the performance of data query operations. Skuery resolves this impedance by adopting XML as a native data type with a native representation (SXML). Likewise, query operations are defined in a general purpose programming language (Scheme in …

The Yellow Envelope, J. Christian Bay Jan 2007

The Yellow Envelope, J. Christian Bay

The Bridge

This short story is an example of a collaboration of two outstandingly productive Danish Americans, one in literature, the other in the world of art. The names of J. Christian Bay (1871-1962) and Christian Petersen (1885-1961) have appeared before in The Bridge. Two translations of Bay's work have been published; the first was in an article about an account of a fictional visit to Chicago by Hans Christian Andersen.2 The second was a translation of his article about the plant scientist Niels Ebbesen Hansen.3 Two reviews of books about Christian Petersen have appeared in The Bridge.4

Not For The King, But For God And Country: Scandinavians And Ethnic Identity During The American Civil War, Anders Rasmussen

The Bridge

The history of the United States is essentially a history of immigration. From the Spanish arrival in Florida in 1565 to present-day America, immigration has been a continuous factor in the history of the United States, and it has repeatedly challenged notions of what it means to be American. Among the many immigrant groups which came to the United States were the Scandinavians. The Civil War between 1861 and 1865 forced these newly arrived immigrants to make important decisions in regards to ethnicity, politics and nationality. This article explores the Scandinavian Civil War experience through the prism of ethnicity and …

Evaluation Of The Wetland Mapping Methods Using Landsat Etm+ And Srtm Data Jan 2007

Evaluation Of The Wetland Mapping Methods Using Landsat Etm+ And Srtm Data

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Overarching goal of this paper was to evaluate automated and semi-automated methods of mapping wetlands using Landsat ETM+ and SRTM data.

Automated methods consisted of: (a) slope derived from SRTM, (b) Tasseled cap Wetness Index (TCWI), (c) Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), (d) multi-band vegetation indices (MBVIs), (e) two band vegetation indices (TBVIs), (f) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and (g) data fusion involving ETM+ and SRTM and then classifying the same. The best of these indices or methods provide an accuracy of less than 30 percent with high errors of omissions and\or commissions.

Semi-automated methods consisted of 3 key …

Assessing Aquifer Vulnerability To Arsenic Pollution Using Drastic And Gis Of North Bengal Plain: A Case Study Of English Bazar Block, Malda District, West Bengal, India

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Geographic Information System (GIS) was utilized to apply a modified DRASTIC method to assess the aquifer vulnerability to pollution of English Bazar Block of Malda District, West Bengal, India. In the western, central and southern parts of the study area the aquifer is prone to contamination. Therefore, in these regions pesticides, which may contain arsenic or arsenic rich groundwater, should not be used in irrigated land or mango orchards. In order to understand the reliability of the aquifer vulnerability, sensitivity analysis was carried out. This analysis indicates that in 62% of the area the vulnerability classes correspond to the present …

Case Studies Of Applying Urban Surface Data In Evaluating Stormwater Management Issues Jan 2007

Case Studies Of Applying Urban Surface Data In Evaluating Stormwater Management Issues

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Pollutant load estimation is often required to evaluate stormwater management issues associated with water quality and urban development. Land use (e.g. residential, commercial) is commonly employed as a base to spatially characterize the pollutant generation from urban areas. This paper demonstrates an alternative approach of using surface type (e.g. road, roof, grassed) to define suspended solids loads in runoff from urban catchments. Three case studies are provided to illustrate the potential of using this surface based approach. The case studies analyzed are 1) a comparison of the suspended particle loads generated from residential and commercial land uses, 2) an assessment …
