Geary examines representative elements of key episodes in which Thomas Kane and his wife, Elizabeth Kane, interacted with the Mormons. The article briefly discusses Tom's visit with the exiled Saints in 1846 and his subsequent activities that culminated in …

The Role Of Web Services In Portal Design: Approaches For An Algerian University Library, Mohamed Ridda Laouar, Richard Hacken, Mathew Miles Sep 2009

The Role Of Web Services In Portal Design: Approaches For An Algerian University Library, Mohamed Ridda Laouar, Richard Hacken, Mathew Miles

Faculty Publications

Purpose - Today, with access to enormous quantities of information facilitated by the web, boundaries between remote and local source documents become invisible. This is of extreme interest for libraries in Algeria, whose local holdings are very limited. Taking for inspiration the idea that a networked environment can benefit less affluent nations, we present a conceptual model for the design of a scholarly web portal at the University of Tébessa, with which we hope to create scholarly work stations that combine local and remote holdings, tools and documents.

Design/methodology/approach - We present an outlined conceptual model of library portal architecture, …

Scan-Based Near-Field Acoustical Holography On Partially Correlated Sources, Michael D. Gardner Aug 2009

Scan-Based Near-Field Acoustical Holography On Partially Correlated Sources, Michael D. Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Scan-based near-field acoustical holography (NAH) is applied to partially correlated sources. Partial field decomposition via the virtual coherence method is used to implement the scan-based NAH. The background and theory of these methods are developed. Multiple stationary reference microphones are required for the partial field decomposition. Guidelines for reference microphone placement in the literature thus far have been limited. Improved guidelines for reference microphones are given after the results of two sets of experiments. The first set involves discrete, partially correlated sources, both physical and numerical. The second set of experiments is strictly numerical and involves continuous sources. Fewer microphones …

Analysis Of Induced Vibrations In Fully-Developed Turbulent Pipe Flow Using A Coupled Les And Fea Approach, Thomas P. Shurtz Aug 2009

Analysis Of Induced Vibrations In Fully-Developed Turbulent Pipe Flow Using A Coupled Les And Fea Approach, Thomas P. Shurtz

Theses and Dissertations

Turbulent flow induced pipe vibration is a phenomenon that has been observed but not fully characterized. This thesis presents research involving numerical simulations that have been used to characterize pipe vibration resulting from fully developed turbulent flow. The vibration levels as indicated by: pipe surface displacement, velocity, and acceleration are characterized in terms of the parameters that exert influence. The influences of geometric and material properties of the pipe are investigated for pipe thickness in the range 1 to 8 mm at a diameter of 0.1015 m. The effects of pipe elastic modulus are explored from 3 to 200 GPa. …

Isogeometric Finite Element Analysis Using T-Splines, Jingang Li Aug 2009

Isogeometric Finite Element Analysis Using T-Splines, Jingang Li

Theses and Dissertations

Non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) methodology is presented, on which the isogeometric analysis is based. T-splines are also introduced as a surface design methodology, which are a generalization of NURBS and permit local refinement. Isogeometric analysis using NURBS and T-splines are applied separately to a structural mechanics problem. The results are compared with the closed-form solution. The desirable performance of isogeometric analysis using T-splines on engineering analysis is demonstrated.

Character Development In A Distance Education Literature Course: Perspectives On Independent Study English 395r-Christian Fantasy Literature, Michael C. Johnson Aug 2009

Character Development In A Distance Education Literature Course: Perspectives On Independent Study English 395r-Christian Fantasy Literature, Michael C. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The goals of higher education often entail the development of students' character. Rarely, however, are these character development goals connected to the unique design and delivery of distance education programs. Additionally, the research literature that explores the character development aspects of distance education is sparse. Thus the purpose of this study is to contribute to the understanding of how character development may occur in a distance context. Taking a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, I examined instructor and student perceptions of character development in a fantasy literature independent study course. Findings indicate that students perceived development of traits and strengths in the …

Modernity And The Good Death: Heidegger And Jose, Anna M. Jensen Aug 2009

Modernity And The Good Death: Heidegger And Jose, Anna M. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will analyze José Clemente Orozco's mural The Epic of American Civilization in terms of the problem of suffering. It will focus specifically on two panels, “Human Sacrifice in Ancient Times” and “Human Sacrifice in Modern Times.” This analysis will comprehend not only the works of art within their historical context, but also within Martin Heidegger's philosophical discussion of the question of suffering. Heidegger presents a unique perspective on the question of human suffering when he writes that Western humans have forgotten how to “dwell.” This dwelling is defined by Heidegger's novel conception of ontology as relational rather than …

The Indigenismo Of Emilio "El Indio" Fernández: Myth, Mestizaje, And Modern Mexico, Mathew J. K. Hill Aug 2009

The Indigenismo Of Emilio "El Indio" Fernández: Myth, Mestizaje, And Modern Mexico, Mathew J. K. Hill

Theses and Dissertations

As one of the major directors of Mexico's Golden Age of Cinema (1936-1956), Emilio “El Indio” Fernández (1904-1986) created films which for many came to express the official vision of Mexican identity. Part of this identity was based on the ideology of indigenismo, which posited that the pre-Columbian past held the basic kernel of Mexico's national essence while advocating the incorporation of modern Indian groups into mainstream society. El Indio's films reflect the paradox of indigenismo: praise for indigenous cultures and a simultaneous effort to make them disappear. The following study examines three of his indigenista films, María …

Design And Characterization Of A Human Exposure Chamber And Inversion Episodes In Salt Lake City, Utah In January/February Of 2009, Roman Yuri Kuprov Aug 2009

Design And Characterization Of A Human Exposure Chamber And Inversion Episodes In Salt Lake City, Utah In January/February Of 2009, Roman Yuri Kuprov

Theses and Dissertations

Research on health effects of particulate matter (PM) has been a very active area in the last two decades. One plausible mechanism by which exposure to PM affects human health includes modification of autonomic endothelium function. Decreased endothelium activity causes heightened risks of cardiovascular disease. A human exposure chamber designed to conduct experiments to quantify diminished function of endothelium from short term exposure to PM is described. The chamber consists of two stages for containment and pre-treatment of PM and exposure of human subjects. Concentrations of CO, CO2, NO, NO2, O3, and PM2.5, are monitored and controlled in the exposure …

Automated Identification Of Noun Clauses In Clinical Language Samples, Britney Richey Manning Aug 2009

Automated Identification Of Noun Clauses In Clinical Language Samples, Britney Richey Manning

Theses and Dissertations

The identification of complex grammatical structures including noun clauses is of clinical importance because differences in the use of these structures have been found between individuals with and without language impairment. In recent years, computer software has been used to assist in analyzing clinical language samples. However, this software has been unable to accurately identify complex syntactic structures such as noun clauses. The present study investigated the accuracy of new software, called Cx, in identifying finite wh- and that-noun clauses. Two sets of language samples were used. One set included 10 children with language impairment, 10 age-matched peers, …

Molecular And Cellular Mechanisms Whereby The Apical Ectodermal Ridge (Aer), Via Wnt5a, Mediates Directional Migration Of The Adjacent Mesenchyme During Vertebrate Limb Development, Kate E. Kmetzsch Aug 2009

Molecular And Cellular Mechanisms Whereby The Apical Ectodermal Ridge (Aer), Via Wnt5a, Mediates Directional Migration Of The Adjacent Mesenchyme During Vertebrate Limb Development, Kate E. Kmetzsch

Theses and Dissertations

The vertebrate embryonic limb is a key model in elucidating the genetic basis underlying the three dimensional morphogenesis of structures. Despite the wealth of insights that have been generated from this model, many long-standing questions remain. For example, it has been known for over 70 years that the apical ectodermal ridge (AER) of the embryonic limb is essential for distal outgrowth and patterning of the adjacent limb mesenchyme. The mechanisms whereby the AER does accomplish outgrowth and patterning are still poorly understood. We propose that secreted FGFs from the AER activate Wnt5a expression in gradient fashion, which in turn provides …

Development Of Psychometrically Equivalent Speech Audiometry Materials For Testing Children In Mongolian, Meghan Elizabeth Caldwell Aug 2009

Development Of Psychometrically Equivalent Speech Audiometry Materials For Testing Children In Mongolian, Meghan Elizabeth Caldwell

The purpose of this study was to develop, digitally record, evaluate, and equate Mongolian monosyllabic and bisyllabic child-appropriate words which can be used in the measurement of word recognition scores and speech-reception threshold (SRT) in children who are native speakers of Mongolian. Based on data collected from a survey of Mongolian child language professionals, a subset of child-appropriate materials was adapted from a set of materials developed for Mongolian adults. Two lists of 50 monosyllabic words and four half-lists of 25 words each were developed for testing the word recognition abilities of Mongolian children. The developed lists and half-lists were …

Critical Thinking And Analyzing Assumptions In Instructional Technology, Bruce William Gabbitas Aug 2009

Critical Thinking And Analyzing Assumptions In Instructional Technology, Bruce William Gabbitas

Theses and Dissertations

In the field of instructional technology critical thinking is valued both as a practice for those in the field and as a skill or habit to teach and measure. However, traditional conceptions of critical thinking are limited in their usefulness and restricted to particular kinds of thinking and reasoning. Conceptions of critical thinking in instructional technology are dominated by these traditional perspectives. Missing is a substantive dialogue on the nature of critical thinking. despite the fact that such dialogue is a part of critical thinking scholarship outside of instructional technology. One of the primary limitations of traditional critical thinking is …

Zyxin Regulates Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition By Mediating Actin-Membrane Linkages At Cell-Cell Junctions, Liv Rebecca Sperry Aug 2009

Zyxin Regulates Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition By Mediating Actin-Membrane Linkages At Cell-Cell Junctions, Liv Rebecca Sperry

Theses and Dissertations

Development is punctuated by morphogenetic rearrangements of epithelial tissues, including complete detachment of individual motile cells during epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Dramatic actin rearrangements occur as cell-cell junctions are dismantled and cells become independently motile during EMT. Characterizing dynamic actin rearrangements and identifying actin machinery driving these rearrangements is essential for understanding basic mechanisms of cell-cell junction remodeling; yet, neither the precise series of actin rearrangements at cell-cell junctions that accompany EMT, nor the machinery that controls actin rearrangement during EMT, have been identified. This work represents a detailed study of junctional actin reorganization in cells undergoing EMT, identifies actin regulatory …

Unemployed Steelworkers, Social Class, And The Construction Of Morality, Paul Andrew Carruth Aug 2009

Unemployed Steelworkers, Social Class, And The Construction Of Morality, Paul Andrew Carruth

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the dynamics of economic relations and distributive outcomes according to displaced steelworkers' own accountings of deindustrialization and job loss. Whereas class analyses tend to investigate consciousness according to “true” versus “false” preferences and “post-class” scholars assert that “post-materialism” is replacing “materialist” social concerns, the author abandons these dualisms to demonstrate that workers use cultural codes of “purity” and “pollution” to represent and evaluate individuals, interests, and relations. The findings buttress the continuing relevance of social class for explaining social identity, consciousness, and antagonism.

Generating Derivative Structures From Multilattices: Algorithm And Application To Hcp Alloys, Gus L. W. Hart, Rodney W. Forcade Jul 2009

Generating Derivative Structures From Multilattices: Algorithm And Application To Hcp Alloys, Gus L. W. Hart, Rodney W. Forcade

Faculty Publications

We present an algorithm for generating all derivative superstructures of a nonprimitive parent lattice. The algorithm has immediate application in important materials design problems such as modeling hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) alloys. Extending the work of Hart and Forcade [Phys. Rev. B 77, 224115 (2008)] (which applies only to Bravais lattices), this approach applies to arbitrary multilattices. The algorithm enumerates superlattices and atomic configurations using permutation groups rather than direct geometric comparisons. The key concept is to use the quotient group associated with each superlattice to determine all unique atomic configurations. The algorithm is very efficient; the run time scales linearly with …

Joseph Smith's American Bible: Radicalizing The Familiar, Terryl L. Givens Jul 2009

Joseph Smith's American Bible: Radicalizing The Familiar, Terryl L. Givens

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The Book of Mormon treats many topics that most nineteenth-century Christians would have been thoroughly familiar with: the fall, atonement, and resurrection, just to name a few. However, the Book of Mormon treats these subjects in a way that would have required such readers to rethink their relationship with the divine, their place in Christian history, and God’s relationship to history. Christ’s visit to the New World, the continuance of the scriptural canon, and abundant personalized revelation all create a text that is both familiar and radical.

Cis-Regulatory Sequence And Co-Regulatory Transcription Factor Functions In Erα-Mediated Transcriptional Repression, Richard Leroy Smith Jul 2009

Cis-Regulatory Sequence And Co-Regulatory Transcription Factor Functions In Erα-Mediated Transcriptional Repression, Richard Leroy Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Estrogens exert numerous actions throughout the human body, targeting healthy tissue while also enhancing the proliferative capacity of breast cancers. Estrogen signaling is mediated by the estrogen receptor (ER), which binds DNA and ultimately affects the expression of adjacent genes. Current understanding of ER-mediated transcriptional regulation is mostly limited to genes whose transcript levels increase following estrogen exposure, though recent studies demonstrate that direct down-regulation of estrogen-responsive genes is also a significant feature of ER action. We hypothesized that differences in cis-regulatory DNA was a factor in determining target gene expression and performed computational and experimental studies to test this …

Physiological Assessment Of Chenopodium Quinoa To Salt Stress, Arturo Jason Morales Jul 2009

Physiological Assessment Of Chenopodium Quinoa To Salt Stress, Arturo Jason Morales

Theses and Dissertations

The physiological responses to salt stress were measured in Chenopodium quinoa. In a greenhouse experiment, salt water was applied to the quinoa varieties, Chipaya and KU-2, and to the model halophyte Thellungiella halophila to assess their relative responses to salt stress. Height and weight data from a seven-week time course demonstrated that both cultivars exhibited greater tolerance to salt than T. halophila. In a growth chamber experiment, three quinoa cultivars, Chipaya, Ollague, and CICA 17 were hydroponically grown and physiological responses were measured with four salt treatments. Tissues collected from the growth chamber treatments were used to obtain …

Beyond The Walls: The Easter Processional On The Exterior Frescos Of Moldavian Monastery Churches, Mollie Elizabeth Mcvey Jul 2009

Beyond The Walls: The Easter Processional On The Exterior Frescos Of Moldavian Monastery Churches, Mollie Elizabeth Mcvey

Theses and Dissertations

During the sixteenth century, the princes of Moldavia, a region of modern Romania, built many churches and monasteries. These churches followed the typical Byzantine style by placing detailed frescos on the interior walls, but some of the Moldavian churches took that tradition even further and expanded the frescos to the façade. This thesis argues that these exterior images were used to enhance the Easter processionals that occurred around the churches. While most scholars explain this phenomenon as propaganda or a cry for help against the Ottoman Empire, a new interpretation is offered here. It discusses how the exterior scenes on …

Energy Current Imaging Method For Time Reversal In Elastic Media, Brian E. Anderson, Michele Griffa, Robert A. Guyer, Paul A. Johnson, Carene Larmat, Pierre-Yves Le Bas, Timothy J. Ulrich Jul 2009

Energy Current Imaging Method For Time Reversal In Elastic Media, Brian E. Anderson, Michele Griffa, Robert A. Guyer, Paul A. Johnson, Carene Larmat, Pierre-Yves Le Bas, Timothy J. Ulrich

Faculty Publications

An energy current imaging method is presented for use in locating sources of wave energy during the back propagation stage of the time reversal process. During the back propagation phase of an ideal time reversal experiment, wave energy coalesces from all angles of incidence to recreate the source event; after the recreation, wave energy diverges in every direction. An energy current imaging method based on this convergence/divergence behavior has been developed. The energy current imaging method yields a smaller spatial distribution for source reconstruction than is possible with traditional energy imaging methods.

Ethnographic Literary Journalism, Christel Lane Swasey Jul 2009

Ethnographic Literary Journalism, Christel Lane Swasey

Theses and Dissertations

Leon Dash and Ted Conover have modeled an ethnographic approach to literary journalism. This approach combines literary journalism's compelling narrative techniques with ethnographic “naturalist-like” (Brewer, 2000) thoroughness and trustworthiness. Rosa Lee: A Mother in Urban America, by Leon Dash, and Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing, by Ted Conover, exemplify this painstaking method that skillfully uses the narrative craft, generates trustworthy data, and contributes to an academic body of knowledge as well as exposing findings to the general public. Dash, Conover, and others have demonstrated the synergy and problem-solving potential of merging anthropology with literary journalism, yet there is no …

Children's Perceptions Of A District-Wide Physical Education Program, Tirza Ramona Watts

Theses and Dissertations

It is important that physical educators, teacher educators, and researchers do all they can to understand and help promote positive attitudes among students, as attitudes toward physical education (PE) may influence students' physical activity intentions and behaviors. The purpose of this study was to identify children's perceptions of PE as it is delivered via a district-wide PE program. Specifically, the study examined the following: (a) student perceptions of enjoyment and usefulness of the PE program as it is systematically delivered in their district, (b) student likes and dislikes with respect to PE, and (c) student voice as expressed directly by …

The Epistemic Qualities Of Quantum Transformation, Jonathan Edward Skalski Jul 2009

The Epistemic Qualities Of Quantum Transformation, Jonathan Edward Skalski

Theses and Dissertations

Growth and development are central constituents of the human experience. Although the American Psychological Association aims to understand change and behavior in ways that embrace all aspects of experience (APA, 2008), sudden, life-altering or quantum transformation has been disregarded throughout the history of psychology until recently (see Miller & C' de Baca, 1994, 2001). Quantum transformation is similar to self-surrender conversion (James, 1902), but different from peak experiences (Maslow, 1964) and near death experiences (Lorimer, 1990) because quantum transformation, by definition, involves lasting change. Quantum transformation contains epistemic qualities, which refer to the content and process of knowing (Miller & …
