Diet Reconstruction Of Wild Rio-Grande Turkey Of Central Utah Using Stable Isotope Analysis, Benjamin D. Stearns Mar 2010

Diet Reconstruction Of Wild Rio-Grande Turkey Of Central Utah Using Stable Isotope Analysis, Benjamin D. Stearns

Theses and Dissertations

The wild turkey is endemic to North America and has played a role in human cultures past and present. However, with the turkey's elusive behavior some aspects of its ecology are challenging to understand. Diet is one of these difficult aspects to study. The purpose of this study was to determine the diet selection of wild turkeys in central Utah using non invasive stable isotope technology. We hypothesize that turkey diet is highly specific, that consumption of specific plant species correlates with the needs of the individual turkey, and that stable isotope analysis will reveal patterns in annual dietary intake. …

Role Of Members Of The Phosducin Gene Family In Protein Translation And Folding, Nana Sono-Koree Mar 2010

Role Of Members Of The Phosducin Gene Family In Protein Translation And Folding, Nana Sono-Koree

Theses and Dissertations

G proteins regulate various physiological processes by way of transducing a wide variety of signals ranging from hormonal to sensory stimuli. Malfunctions in G protein signaling lead to numerous diseases. G protein signaling begins with binding of a ligand to a G protein-coupled receptor resulting in a conformational change that leads to the exchange of a GDP for a GTP on G α. The GTP bound α subunit dissociates for its stable Gβγ dimer partner. G α-GTP and Gβγ control the activity of effector enzymes and ion channels that ultimately orchestrate the cellular response to stimulus. Current reports have shown …

National Identity Transnational Identification: The City And The Child As Evidence Of Identification Among The Poetic Elite, Mary L. Hedengren Mar 2010

National Identity Transnational Identification: The City And The Child As Evidence Of Identification Among The Poetic Elite, Mary L. Hedengren

Theses and Dissertations

While poetry has historically been connected with rhetoric, few rhetoricians have studied contemporary poetry. Jeffery Walker suggests that this is because contemporary poetry, unlike classical poetry, no longer addresses all socio-economic levels of society but has become insular and self-referential (329). He criticizes that poetry no longer cuts vertically across one culture's hierarchy. I agree that poetry no longer addresses all segments of society, but I argue that this doesn't mean poetry is no longer rhetorical. Contemporary poetry now operates horizontally to unite the cultural elite of many national and ethnic groups by appealing to their identity as poetry readers. …

Public Spheres, Democracy, And New Media: Using Blogs In The Composition Classroom, Katherine Elizabeth Cowley Mar 2010

Public Spheres, Democracy, And New Media: Using Blogs In The Composition Classroom, Katherine Elizabeth Cowley

Theses and Dissertations

Public spheres theories provide purpose and direction to composition instruction: the teaching of writing within this context empowers our students to participate in public discourse and make a difference in communities. New media has been celebrated for its democratic nature, and composition instructors have begun to use public spheres theories as they incorporate new media in the classroom to create a protopublic space. Yet most composition instructors have ignored the wealth of evidence that shows that the Internet is not as democratic as it seems. As such, our new media teaching practices should account for both the democratic opportunities and …

The Asymmetric Phase-Transfer Catalyzed Alkylation Of Imidazolyl Ketones And Aryl Acetates And Their Applications To Total Synthesis, Michael Andrew Christiansen Mar 2010

The Asymmetric Phase-Transfer Catalyzed Alkylation Of Imidazolyl Ketones And Aryl Acetates And Their Applications To Total Synthesis, Michael Andrew Christiansen

Theses and Dissertations

Phase-transfer catalysts derived from the cinchona alkaloids cinchonine and cinchonidine are widely used in the asymmetric alkylation of substrates bearing moieties that resonance stabilize their enolates. The investigation of α-oxygenated esters revealed decreased α-proton acidity, indicating the oxygen's overall destabilizing effect on enolates by electron-pair repulsion. Alkylation of α-oxygenated aryl ketones with various alkyl halides proved successful with a cinchonidine catalyst, giving products with high yield and enantioselectivity. The resulting compounds were converted to esters through modified Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. Alkylation with indolyl electrophiles gave products that underwent decomposition under Baeyer-Villiger conditions. Alternative N-methylimidazolyl ketones were explored. Alkylated imidazolyl ketones, obtained …

This Is Sportscenter: Performance And Performativity In Sports Broadcasting And Punditry, Anthony C. Gunn Mar 2010

This Is Sportscenter: Performance And Performativity In Sports Broadcasting And Punditry, Anthony C. Gunn

Theses and Dissertations

Within the discipline of Performance Studies there is a debate about what is included within the ontology of “performance.” Peggy Phelan suggests that performance can only be experienced in the here and now, and any recording of a performance makes it “something other than performance.” Phillip Auslander argues the exact opposite, claiming that mediatized performance is not only valid, but also preferable to the live. This thesis is about performance in sports broadcasting, and states that performance, like sport, can be valid in both live and mediatized forms. The thesis also details how sports broadcasters perform and how their performance …

Parental Factors As A Moderator Of The Co-Occurrence Of Substance Use And Depression In Hispanic Adolescents, Rebecca Shoff

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between parenting factors and Hispanic adolescent substance use and depression. Specifically, the study examined the relationship between parental support, parental knowledge, and parental psychological control among Hispanic adolescents' use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, hard drugs and depressive symptoms. The sample included 839 Hispanic (primarily Mexican) 9th – 12th graders from west Texas area school districts who were given a self-reported survey to assess parental behaviors, substance use, and adolescent depression. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), findings indicated that higher levels of maternal support were related to lower levels of depressive …

Number, Newtonianism, And Sublimity In James Thomson's The Seasons, Jessie Leatham Wirkus Mar 2010

Number, Newtonianism, And Sublimity In James Thomson's The Seasons, Jessie Leatham Wirkus

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, literary critics have increasingly drawn on methods of quantitative analysis to understand the readers and literature of the eighteenth century. Ironically, however, the eighteenth century is home to debates concerning the nature and usefulness of number, counting, and therefore, on some level, quantitative analysis. Eighteenth-century questions of number form an important part of the intellectual history of this period; these questions of number, in turn, hold important implications for language and the period's literature. I argue that the far-reaching influence of eighteenth-century questions of number can be seen especially well in the nature poetry of James Thomson. To explore …

Uav Video Coverage Quality Maps And Prioritized Indexing For Wilderness Search And Rescue, Cameron Engh, Michael A. Goodrich, Bryan S. Morse Mar 2010

Uav Video Coverage Quality Maps And Prioritized Indexing For Wilderness Search And Rescue, Cameron Engh, Michael A. Goodrich, Bryan S. Morse

Faculty Publications

Video-equipped mini unmanned aerial vehicles (mini-UAVs) are becoming increasingly popular for surveillance, remote sensing, law enforcement, and search and rescue operations, all of which rely on thorough coverage of a target observation area. However, coverage is not simply a matter of seeing the area (visibility) but of seeing it well enough to allow detection of targets of interest, a quality we here call “see-ability”. Video flashlights, mosaics, or other geospatial compositions of the video may help place the video in context and convey that an area was observed, but not necessarily how well or how often. This paper presents a …

Frequency Response And Gain Enhancement Of Solid-State Impact-Ionization Multipliers (Sims), Joshua L. Beutler Feb 2010

Frequency Response And Gain Enhancement Of Solid-State Impact-Ionization Multipliers (Sims), Joshua L. Beutler

Theses and Dissertations

A study of the frequency response and gain of Solid-state the Impact-ionization Multiplier (SIM). The SIM generates current gain via impact ionization also known as avalanche gain. The SIM provides low noise amplification from an arbitrary current source. In the case of this study, current sources consisted of photodiodes optimized for a particular wavelength of light. The SIM is fabricated from silicon and enjoys the low noise, low carrier transit time advantages of conventional silicon impact ionization devices while amplifying current from a photodiode of a different material. This is advantageous because ideal detection and multiplication regions cannot always be …

Asian Spread Option Pricing Models And Computation, Sijin Chen Feb 2010

Asian Spread Option Pricing Models And Computation, Sijin Chen

Theses and Dissertations

In the commodity and energy markets, there are two kinds of risk that traders and analysts are concerned a lot about: multiple underlying risk and average price risk. Spread options, swaps and swaptions are widely used to hedge multiple underlying risks and Asian (average price) options can deal with average price risk. But when those two risks are combined together, then we need to consider Asian spread options and Asian-European spread options for hedging purposes. For an Asian or Asian-European spread call option, its payoff depends on the difference of two underlyings' average price or of one average price and …

The Geography Of Undocumented Mexican Migration, Douglas S. Massey, Jacob S. Rugh, Karen A. Pren Feb 2010

The Geography Of Undocumented Mexican Migration, Douglas S. Massey, Jacob S. Rugh, Karen A. Pren

Faculty Publications

Using data from Mexico’s Matrícula Consular program, we analyze the geographic organization of undocumented Mexican migration to the United States. We show that emigration has moved beyond its historical origins in west-central Mexico into the central region and, to a lesser extent, the southeast and border regions. In the United States, traditional gateways continue to dominate, but a variety of new destinations have emerged. California, in particular, has lost its overwhelming dominance. Although the geographic structure of Mexico-U.S. migration is relatively stable, it has nonetheless continued to evolve and change over time.

Intergovernmental Fiscal Relations In The Czech Republic: A Survey Of Municipality Expenditure Patterns, Phillip J. Bryson, Scott M. Smith, Gary C. Cornia Jan 2010

Intergovernmental Fiscal Relations In The Czech Republic: A Survey Of Municipality Expenditure Patterns, Phillip J. Bryson, Scott M. Smith, Gary C. Cornia

Faculty Publications

A survey of Czech local officials probes perceptions of intergovernmental relations. Perceived autonomy and municipality size are tested as autonomy indicators. The impact of the city size on municipal expenditures from different funding sources is evaluated. Cross-tabulations of city size identify revenue sources for various expenditures and activities. For all expenditures, use of funds is more effectively explained by city size than by the fiscal choices of high- and low-autonomy groups. A graphic analysis of relationships between expenditures and revenue sources complements the statistical analysis. Radar charts reveal sources for small versus large and low- versus high-autonomy cities.

The Dead Sea Scrolls And The World Of Jesus, Andrew C. Skinner Jan 2010

The Dead Sea Scrolls And The World Of Jesus, Andrew C. Skinner

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

The Dead Sea Scrolls constitute a seminal resource for understanding the context of the early Christian community and several New Testament texts. Soon after their discovery, some very sensational claims were made about the Qumran community and its literature (the scrolls) in terms of their connection to Jesus and his followers. While these have largely been dismissed, and serious and persistent scholarship over the years has shown that there were differences between the Qumran community and early Christianity, significant similarities do exist. These similarities line up largely according to the following categories: common scripture and its interpretation, theological ideas, vocabulary …

The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible, Donald W. Parry Jan 2010

The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible, Donald W. Parry

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

This paper examines various significant aspects of what may be designated the Dead Sea Scrolls Bible: its contents and description, scribal conventions, variant readings, use by modern English Bible translations, as well as parabiblical texts and their possible affiliation with the DSS Bible, canonicity, scriptural commentaries, tefillin, and mezuzot. An examination of the DSS biblical texts, which date to nearly a thousand years earlier than previously known texts of the Hebrew Bible, demonstrates a high degree of accuracy in the transmission of our Bible texts. Most variants offer only minor corrections to our biblical texts. Thus the scribe's professionalism overall …

Groundwater Flow Model And Particle Track Analysis For Selecting Water Quality Monitoring Well Sites, And Soil Sampling Profiles Jan 2010

Groundwater Flow Model And Particle Track Analysis For Selecting Water Quality Monitoring Well Sites, And Soil Sampling Profiles

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Researchers often use only surface drainage (imperical method) as a tradition to locate sites for installation of water quality monitoring wells, and soil sampling profile for pollution studies in urban areas. They neglect that structural development may have altered the natural surface drainage. This paper demonstrates an advanced method; combining surface imperical method with a three-dimensional groundwater flow model and particle track analysis. This was performed using transient MODFLOW and MODPATH codes, as a first step in a pollution study of Owerri urban areas. Result was more reliable, showing diverging flows at Orji and Nekede auto-mechanic villages (MVs) due to …

Water constitutes one of the sensitive environmental parameters of the hydrological processes. Therefore, the study of water resources exploitation sustainable to the environment is important. Water resources development in hard rock terrain in many parts of Kerala state poses a key issue in the management strategy. The sustainable aspect of the water resources exploration in this state necessitates the need for a better water resources management. Usefulness of remote sensing techniques in conjunction with geophysical investigation and yield analysis were attempted in understanding the groundwater resources potential of diverse land cover classes around Kasaragod, located in the northern tip of …

Faith, Philosophy, Scripture, James E. Faulconer Jan 2010

Faith, Philosophy, Scripture, James E. Faulconer

Maxwell Institute Publications

Faith, Philosophy, Scripture is a collection of ten path-breaking essays informed by Professor James E. Faulconer’s work as a philosopher and his abiding faith as a Latter-day Saint.

“The confidence of my faith, a confidence that came by revelation,” Faulconer writes,” has allowed me to hear the questions of philosophy without fear, and philosophy has never asked me to give up my faith, though it has asked questions about it.” Faith is the starting point, scripture offers the data, and philosophy more supplement than competitor. Faith, philosophy, and scripture help make sense of each other.

These essays ask what it …

On Music Angels: God Only Knows, David M. Kirkham Jan 2010

On Music Angels: God Only Knows, David M. Kirkham

BYU Studies

The trek from my office at the Air Force Academy history department to the faculty parking lot was long enough--about a ten-minute walk--sufficient time for some substantive thinking. One winter evening in about 1992, as I made the walk, my Comparative Revolutions course weighed on my mind. As I pondered how I might introduce the next day's discussion on causes of revolutions, I climbed into my 1987 red Dodge Colt more out of habit than deliberation. At the turn of the ignition key, the radio's boom broke my reverie and jarred me back to the reality of my immediate surroundings. …

Satire In Boaistuau’S Théâtre Du Monde, Alison Baird Lovell Jan 2010

Satire In Boaistuau’S Théâtre Du Monde, Alison Baird Lovell

Quidditas

Le Théâtre du monde [Theater of the World] (1558) of Pierre Boaistuau was an encyclopedic compilation in three books presenting a litany of vices and miseries in human life; the book proved to be an early modern “bestseller” and was reproduced in many editions and translations across Europe. Boaistuau, the first editor of the tales of Marguerite de Navarre, also edited other story collections, besides investigating religious matters, early modern science and medicine including prodigies and monsters, and other developing forms of knowledge. The Théâtre du monde manifested topoi including the theatrum mundi with its vast spectacle displayed …
