Nonlinear Optimization For Improving The Operation Of Sewer Systems: The Bogot´A Case Study., J. M. Giraldo, S. Leirens, Mario Díaz-Granados, Juan Pablo Rodríguez Jul 2010

Nonlinear Optimization For Improving The Operation Of Sewer Systems: The Bogot´A Case Study., J. M. Giraldo, S. Leirens, Mario Díaz-Granados, Juan Pablo Rodríguez

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Sewer systems are considered as complex large-scale systems that traditionally collect and transport stormwater and sanitary sewage out from urban areas. Each subsystem is in itself composed of a large number of elements with time-varying behavior, exhibiting several operating modes and subject to changes due to external conditions and operational constraints. Sewer systems are mainly operated using pumping stations and pollutants are removed from sewage by treatment plants before water is released into the environment. When a sewer overflow occurs, e.g., caused by a strong rainfall, sewage is discharged directly into the environment with some dilution but without treatment. An …

Uncertainty Propagation Throughout An Integrated Water-Quality Model, Gabriele Freni, G. Mannina, G. Viviani Jul 2010

Uncertainty Propagation Throughout An Integrated Water-Quality Model, Gabriele Freni, G. Mannina, G. Viviani

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In integrated urban drainage water quality models, due to the fact that integrated approaches are basically a cascade of sub-models (simulating sewer system, wastewater treatment plant and receiving water body), uncertainty produced in one sub-model propagates to the following ones depending on the model structure, the estimation of parameters and the availability and uncertainty of measurements in the different parts of the system. Uncertainty basically propagates throughout a chain of models in which simulation output from upstream models is transferred to the downstream ones as input. The overall uncertainty can differ from the simple sum of uncertainties generated in each …

Edwin Rushton As The Source Of The White Horse Prophecy, Don L. Penrod Jul 2010

Edwin Rushton As The Source Of The White Horse Prophecy, Don L. Penrod

BYU Studies

The so-called white horse prophecy has been cited in news media as the source of a prophecy that Latter-day Saint elders will preserve the US Constitution as it hangs by a thread. It is commonly claimed that the white horse prophecy was written and made public among Latter-day Saints in the 1850s. However, Don Penrod shows in this article that it was written around 1900 by Edwin Rushton, a Mormon living in Utah.

Penrod shows that while Brigham Young (in 1854) and Eliza R. Snow (in 1870) reported that Joseph Smith once said that the US Constitution would hang by …

Jesus Was Not A Unitarian, David L. Paulsen, Jacob Hawken, Michael Hansen Jul 2010

Jesus Was Not A Unitarian, David L. Paulsen, Jacob Hawken, Michael Hansen

BYU Studies

David Paulsen, Jacob Hawken, and Michael Hansen discuss Sir Anthony Buzzard's work Jesus Was Not a Trinitarian (2007). In this theological review essay, the authors show that the problems inherent in the doctrines of unitarianism and trinitarianism are addressed elegantly in the doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Editor's Note: At the authors' request, we have posted two versions of this article--the shorter version that was printed in the journal and the longer 22-page version that is only available here.

Best Practices For Dealing With Price Volatility In Utah's Residential Construction Market, James Packer Smith Jun 2010

Best Practices For Dealing With Price Volatility In Utah's Residential Construction Market, James Packer Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Price volatility is a consistent problem that affects all of the parties involved in the residential construction industry. The myriad factors that can have an impact on construction costs are such that it is extremely hard to anticipate upcoming changes in a timely and accurate way. When prices fluctuate during the course of a project, estimates become erroneous and completion of projects within expected budgets becomes difficult. Increasing prices typically leave contractors with the majority of the risk burden due to the enforceability of contracts that are likely to have been executed months prior. The risk associated with the owner's …

Chemopreventive Effects Of Dietary Selenium And Soy Isoflavones In A Mouse Model Of Prostate Cancer, Trevor Elisha Quiner Jun 2010

Chemopreventive Effects Of Dietary Selenium And Soy Isoflavones In A Mouse Model Of Prostate Cancer, Trevor Elisha Quiner

Theses and Dissertations

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Prostate cancer, like many cancers, is a disease that generally requires a long period of time to develop and grow before it becomes detectable. This long period of latency makes prostate cancer a candidate for dietary chemoprevention. Soy and selenium (Se), are associated with a decreased risk of prostate cancer. We previously showed that high dietary intake of selenium (Se) and soy isoflavones decreased the expression of the androgen receptor (AR) and AR-regulated genes in the prostates …

Liver Kinase B1/Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Signaling In The Diaphragm, Jacob D. Brown Jun 2010

Liver Kinase B1/Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Signaling In The Diaphragm, Jacob D. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The Liver Kinase B1 (LKB1)/AMP-Activated Protein Kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway is a major regulator of skeletal muscle metabolic processes. During exercise, LKB1-mediated phosphorylation of AMPK leads to its activation, promoting mitochondrial biogenesis and glucose transport, among other effects. The roles of LKB1 and AMPK have not been fully characterized in the diaphragm. Two methods of AMPK activation were used to characterize LKB1/AMPK signaling in diaphragms from muscle-specific LKB1 knockout (KO) and littermate control (C) mice: (1) acute injection of 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside (AICAR) and (2) 5-min direct electrical stimulation (ES) of the diaphragm. Diaphragms were excised 60 minutes post-AICAR injection and …

Civic Participation In The Writing Classroom: New Media And Public Writing, Jonathan S. Wallin Jun 2010

Civic Participation In The Writing Classroom: New Media And Public Writing, Jonathan S. Wallin

Theses and Dissertations

Public writing evolved from the social turn in composition pedagogy as scholars sought to determine which practices would be most effective in utilizing writing instruction to help fulfill the civic mission of the university and educate not just for vocational training, but to train students as better citizens as well. Based on the scholarship of Susan Wells, Elizabeth Ervin, and Rosa Eberly (among others), public writing scholars strove to distance the theory from old, generic forms, like letters to the editor, and create new arenas where students could be genuinely involved in civic acts and public discourse. As these scholars …

Burke, Dewey, And The Experience Of Aristotle's Epideictic: An Examination Of Rhetorical Elements Found In The Funerals Of Lincoln, Kennedy, And Reagan, Xanthe Kristine Allen Farnworth Jun 2010

Burke, Dewey, And The Experience Of Aristotle's Epideictic: An Examination Of Rhetorical Elements Found In The Funerals Of Lincoln, Kennedy, And Reagan, Xanthe Kristine Allen Farnworth

Theses and Dissertations

This article examines the role of epideictic rhetoric as a tool for promoting civic virtue in the public realm through the application of Kenneth Burke's theory of identification and John Dewey's explanation of an aesthetic experience. Long the jurisdiction of Aristotle's logical arguments, civic discussion usually works within the realm of forensic or deliberative persuasion. However, scholarship in the last fifty years suggests there is an unexplored dimension of Aristotle's discussion of epideictic and emotion that needs to be examined in an attempt to identify its usefulness as a tool for examining human experience and practical behavior in the political …

Malingering Detection Among Accommodation-Seeking University Students, Spencer Paul Clayton Jun 2010

Malingering Detection Among Accommodation-Seeking University Students, Spencer Paul Clayton

Theses and Dissertations

Universities have increasingly sought to provide accommodative services to students with learning disorders and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in recent decades thereby creating a need for diagnostic batteries designed to evaluate cognitive abilities relevant to academic performance. Given that accommodative services (extended time on tests, alternate test forms, etc.) provide incentive to distort impairment steps should be taken to estimate the rate at which students distort impairment and to evaluate the accuracy with which symptom distortion is identified. In order to address these concerns, the Word-Memory Test, Test of Memory Malingering, and Fake Bad Scale (of the MMPI-2) were compared in …

Phenomenological Intentionality Of Pedro Salinas In His Travels And In His Poem "La Memoria En Las Manos" From Largo Lamento, Andrew W. Bishop Jun 2010

Phenomenological Intentionality Of Pedro Salinas In His Travels And In His Poem "La Memoria En Las Manos" From Largo Lamento, Andrew W. Bishop

Theses and Dissertations

Intentionality, in its various forms, connects the subject with objects as they appear within the subject's view of the world. Poets, like artists, create with their bodies and perceive the world with their senses and with their souls. Subjects allow objects to reveal themselves, to manifest themselves having identities according to the contexts in which they appear. This system is called intentionality—a phenomenological concept in which appearances have ontological meanings. Phenomenology, as explained by Maurice Merleau-Ponty, provides a theoretical framework within which Pedro Salinas's poetry may be understood and interpreted. Pedro Salinas forms part of Spain's Generation of 1927 and …

Proactive Parenting Practices During Early Adolescence: A Cluster Approach, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Katherine J. Christensen, Randal D. Day

Faculty Publications

The purpose of the current study was to explore clusters of proactive parenting practices, and how they might vary as a function of parental demographics, the quality of the parent– child relationship, and the traits and behaviors of the adolescent child. Data were taken from the Flourishing Families Project, which includes 500 families with an early adolescent child (M age ¼ 11.49). Findings suggested that there were four clusters of parents, and patterns were similar for mothers and fathers. Findings also suggested that proactive clusters varied primarily as a function of demographics of the parent (e.g., religiosity, ethnicity, education) and …

Numerical Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Limited Width Gravel Backfills In Increasing Lateral Passive Resistance, Mo'oud Nasr Jun 2010

Numerical Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Limited Width Gravel Backfills In Increasing Lateral Passive Resistance, Mo'oud Nasr

Theses and Dissertations

Two series of static full-scale lateral pile cap tests were conducted on pile caps with different aspect ratios, with full width (homogeneous) and limited width backfill conditions involving loose sand and dense gravel. The limited width backfills were constructed by placing a relatively narrow zone (3 to 6 ft (0.91 to 1.83 m)) of higher density gravel material adjacent to the cap with loose sand beyond the gravel zone. Test results indicated that large increases in lateral passive resistance could be expected for limited width backfills. The main focus of this study is to assess the contribution of plane strain …

Investigating Executive Functions In Men Seeking Help For Hypersexual Behavior Using Neuropsychological Testing, Rory C. Reid Jun 2010

Investigating Executive Functions In Men Seeking Help For Hypersexual Behavior Using Neuropsychological Testing, Rory C. Reid

Theses and Dissertations

Patients seeking help for hypersexual behavior often exhibit features of impulsivity, cognitive rigidity, poor judgment, deficits in emotion regulation, and excessive preoccupation with sex. Some of these characteristics are also common among patients presenting with neurological pathology associated with executive dysfunction. These observations led to the current investigation in which differences across scores on objective neuropsychological tests of executive functioning were explored in a group of hypersexual male patients (n = 30) compared with a non-hypersexual community sample (n = 30) of men. Using multivariate statistics, differences between the groups were examined yielding significant differences on measures of hypersexuality. However, …

Women Mourners, Mourning "Nobody", Jennifer Pecora Jun 2010

Women Mourners, Mourning "Nobody", Jennifer Pecora

Theses and Dissertations

Historian David Bell recently suggested that scholars reconsider the impact of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815) upon modern culture, naming them the first "total war" in modern history. My thesis explores the significance of the wars specifically in the British mourning culture of the period by studying the war literature of four women writers: Anna Letitia Barbauld, Amelia Opie, Jane Austen, and Felicia Hemans. This paper further asks how these authors contributed to the development of a national consciousness studied by Georg Lukács, Benedict Anderson, and others. I argue that women had a representative experience of non-combatants' struggle to …

Criticism As Redemption: Jonathan Safran Foer's Theory Of Meaning, Lauren Nicole Barlow Jun 2010

Criticism As Redemption: Jonathan Safran Foer's Theory Of Meaning, Lauren Nicole Barlow

Theses and Dissertations

Not long after the release of his first novel, Everything is Illuminated, critics and authors alike began showering Jonathan Safran Foer with both praise and disparagement for his postmodern style. Yet, this large body of criticism ignores the theoretical work taking place within Foer's fiction. This thesis attempts to fill this gap by highlighting specific aspects of Foer's theoretical work as it relates to the creation of meaning in a text and to explore what this work might imply for the broader literary community. Much of Foer's work toys with the capacity of language to express meaning, indulging in …

The Tercentenary Of New Bern, H. Dwight Page Jun 2010

The Tercentenary Of New Bern, H. Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The present year 2010 marks the tercentenary of the City of New Bern, North Carolina, and yet this celebration signifies much more than that, for, although Sir Walter Raleigh did establish a temporary English colony on Roanoke Island in 1587 and although a number of English plantations were established along Albemarle Sound and Pamlico Sound during the second half of the seventeenth century, the European urbanization of North Carolina did not begin in earnest until the foundation of New Bern by Baron Christoph deGraffenried in 1710, and for North Carolinians it is New Bern which represents the first permanent major …

A Lift Of Cohomology Eigenclasses Of Hecke Operators, Brian Francis Hansen May 2010

A Lift Of Cohomology Eigenclasses Of Hecke Operators, Brian Francis Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

A considerable amount of evidence has shown that for every prime p &neq; N observed, a simultaneous eigenvector v_0 of Hecke operators T(l,i), i=1,2, in H^3(Γ_0(N),F(0,0,0)) has a “lift” v in H^3(Γ_0(N),F(p−1,0,0)) — i.e., a simultaneous eigenvector v of Hecke operators having the same system of eigenvalues that v_0 has. For each prime p>3 and N=11 and 17, we construct a vector v that is in the cohomology group H^3(Γ_0(N),F(p−1,0,0)). This is the first construction of an element of infinitely many different cohomology groups, other than modulo p reductions of characteristic zero objects. We proceed to show that v …

The Development Of Two Units For Basic Training And Resources For Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages: "Developing A Successful Teaching Personality" And "Managing Classes Of English Language Learners", Iva Crookston May 2010

The Development Of Two Units For Basic Training And Resources For Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages: "Developing A Successful Teaching Personality" And "Managing Classes Of English Language Learners", Iva Crookston

Theses and Dissertations

A team of graduate students from Brigham Young University under the supervision of the main author, Dr. Henrichsen, collaborated on creating a book as well as a website, Basic Training and Resources for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (BTR-TESOL). The entire project consists of ten main sections with nearly fifty units addressing topics that novice teachers should know before teaching English to non-native speakers. The BTR-TESOL project answers the need for material for untrained novice teachers that will help them to be better prepared in a very minimalistic way to face the challenges and responsibilities that teaching of …

Mitt Romney’S Religion: A Five Factor Model For Analysis Of Media Representation Of Mormon Identity, Sherry Baker, Joel Campbell May 2010

Mitt Romney’S Religion: A Five Factor Model For Analysis Of Media Representation Of Mormon Identity, Sherry Baker, Joel Campbell

Faculty Publications

Mitt Romney’s religion accounted for 50% of all religion-related presidential primary campaign stories in 2007, and 30% of Romney’s total media coverage focused on his Mormon faith. This article reviews that coverage and considers it within the larger historical context of the complex relationship between media and Mormonism throughout the 180-year history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A factorial model (the first in the area of Mormon Media Studies) is proposed by which to document and analyze the wider societal influences that are reflected in media representation of Mormon identity. The model’s 5 factors include the …

Design And Analysis Of A Compliant Mechanism Spinal Implant, Eric M. Stratton May 2010

Design And Analysis Of A Compliant Mechanism Spinal Implant, Eric M. Stratton

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis introduces and presents the modeling of a novel compliant spinal implant designed to reduce back pain and restore function to degenerate spinal disc tissues as well as provide a mechanical environment conducive to healing the tissues. The initial objectives for this device development and the focus of this work are modeling and validation of the force-deflection relationships and stress analysis. Modeling was done using the pseudo-rigid-body model to create a 3 degree of freedom mechanism for flexion-extension (forward-backward bending) and a 5 degree of freedom mechanism for lateral bending (side-to-side). These models were analyzed using the principle of …

Growth In Students' Conceptions Of Mathematical Induction, John David Gruver May 2010

Growth In Students' Conceptions Of Mathematical Induction, John David Gruver

Theses and Dissertations

While proof and reasoning lie at the core of mathematical practice, how students learn to reason formally and build convincing proofs continues to invite reflection and discussion. To add to this discussion I investigated how three students grew in their conceptions of mathematical induction. While each of the students in the study had different experiences and grew in different ways, the grounded axes (triggering events, personal questions about mathematics, and personal questions about a particular solution) highlighted patterns in the narratives and from these patterns a theoretical perspective emerged. Reflection, both on mathematics in general and …

The Nature Of Classroom Instruction And Physical Environments That Support Elementary Writing, Monica Thomas Billen Apr 2010

The Nature Of Classroom Instruction And Physical Environments That Support Elementary Writing, Monica Thomas Billen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to document the nature of elementary writing instruction and classroom physical environments in eight Utah school districts. One hundred seventy-seven full-day observations were completed throughout a one-week period. Results indicated teachers included at least one of the following types of writing: writing workshop/writing process, non-process writing, and writing conventions and mechanics. Process writing time was dominated by instruction from the teacher. Other elements of the writing workshop were implemented, but in a fragmented way. Only five teachers combined aspects of the workshop simultaneously. Non-process writing activities were dominated by prompts and formulas that resulted …

Design And Feasibility Testing For A Ground-Based, Three-Dimensional, Ultra-High-Resolution, Synthetic Aperture Radar To Image Snowpacks, Stephen Joseph Preston Apr 2010

Design And Feasibility Testing For A Ground-Based, Three-Dimensional, Ultra-High-Resolution, Synthetic Aperture Radar To Image Snowpacks, Stephen Joseph Preston

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis works through the design of a radar-based system for imaging snowpacks remotely and over large areas to assist in avalanche prediction. The key to such a system is the ability to image volumes of snow at shallow, spatially-varying angles of incidence. To achieve this prerequisite, the design calls for a ground-based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) capable of generating three-dimensional, ultra-high-resolution images of a snowpack. To arrive at design parameters for this SAR, the thesis works through relevant principles in avalanche mechanics, alpine-snowpack geophysics, and electromagnetic scattering theory. The thesis also works through principles of radar, SAR, antenna, and …
