Chronic Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Activation And A High-Fat Diet Have An Additive Effect On Mitochondria In Rat Skeletal Muscle, Natasha Fillmore

Theses and Dissertations

Factors that stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle include AMPK, calcium, and circulating FFAs. Chronic treatment with either AICAR, a chemical activator of AMPK, or increasing circulating FFAs with a high fat diet increases mitochondria in rat skeletal muscle. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the combination of chronic chemical activation of AMPK and high fat feeding would have an additive effect on skeletal muscle mitochondria levels. We treated Wistar male rats with a high fat diet (HF), AICAR injections (AICAR), or a high fat diet and AICAR injections (HF+AICAR) for six weeks. At the end of …

A Generic Framework For Multi-Disciplinary Environmental Modelling, Rolf Hennicker, Sebastian S. Bauer, Stephan Janisch, Matthias Ludwig

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We present a generic framework for computer-based environmental modelling which supports the coupling of simulation models from various sciences to perform integrative simulations. The framework is, in principle, applicable to any kind of model which simulates spatially distributed environmental processes with an arbitrary, but discrete, time scale. During an integrative simulation the framework coordinates the coupled models which run in parallel exchanging iteratively data via their interfaces. For proving the correctness of the coordination, formal methods of software development have been applied. The framework provides a developer interface for the implementation of natural science and socio-economic simulation models. For the …

Mirana: A Socio-Ecological Model For Assessing Sustainability Of Community-Based Regulations, Sigrid Aubert, Jean-Pierre Müller, Julliard Ralihalizara

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Malagasy local communities managing forest resources have difficulties in assessing the impacts of the management plans they decide upon. To help them, we have designed an integrated model with the ecological processes, the various regulations (zoning, quota, etc..) and the resulting inhabitants behavior in order to explore the impacts of scenarios. The model MIRANA has been designed using the MIMOSA framework in which one must design a conceptual model using ontologies, annotate the conceptual model with the necessary processes, and design a concrete model from which to generate the simulation model. In MIRANA, the conceptual model is made of …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In agent-based models of land use/cover change (ABM/LUCC), small changes in micro-level decision-making methods used by agents may significantly affect macro-level outcomes. Yet, the implications of choosing a specific decision making model are seldom explored in ABM/LUCC studies. This paper discusses an ABM/LUCC modelling study of smallholder farming households in the Amazonian varzea in Maraj´o Island, Brazil. These agents represent the 21 households within the community of Paricatuba. Farmers in this community cultivate acai as a primary source of income, in addition to other farming and economic activities such as offsite employment. In the model, agents make annual decisions to …

An Integrated Assessment Approach To Linking Biophysical Modelling And Economic Valuation Tools, Marit E. Kragt, James Bennett, A. J. Jakeman Jul 2010

An Integrated Assessment Approach To Linking Biophysical Modelling And Economic Valuation Tools, Marit E. Kragt, James Bennett, A. J. Jakeman

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Catchment natural resource management (NRM) involves complex decisions that affect a wide variety of values, issues and stakeholders. Designing efficient NRM policies requires assessments of the environmental impacts, and costs and benefits of management interventions in an integrated manner. However, despite the need for integrated assessment (IA), there are few comprehensive frameworks that integrate biophysical models with economic valuation. Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) is a framework that can support efficient NRM by assessing and comparing the total social costs and benefits of management interventions. However, the environmental modelling that has underpinned CBA has typically been poor, reducing the credibility of the …

Decision Support For Environmental Monitoring And Restoration: Application Of The Partially Observable Markov Decision Process, David Tomberlin Jul 2010

Decision Support For Environmental Monitoring And Restoration: Application Of The Partially Observable Markov Decision Process, David Tomberlin

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Environmental monitoring programs can improve management over time, butgenerally require that correspondingly less time and money be put into direct restorationefforts such as revegetation or dam removal. Thus, budget constraints compelenvironmental managers to make difficult decisions regarding the allocation of scarcefunds and personnel between environmental monitoring and environmental restoration.Among other factors, the best allocation of resources between monitoring and restoration—or, more generally, learning and doing—will depend on the quality of information availablefrom a monitoring program. This paper demonstrates the application of the partiallyobservable Markov decision process (POMDP) as a framework for investigating theoptimal intensity of monitoring given stochastic state dynamics …

Towards The Adoption Of Integrated Urban Water Management For Planning, Shiroma Maheepala Jul 2010

Towards The Adoption Of Integrated Urban Water Management For Planning, Shiroma Maheepala

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Integrated Urban Water Management is an emerging approach for urban waterutilities to plan and manage urban water systems to minimize their impact on the naturalenvironment, to maximize their contribution to social and economic vitality and toengender overall community improvement. The obvious starting point for adopting theIUWM approach is the strategic planning phase. However, little has been written onprocesses that enable application of the IUWM approach to planning. Identifying thisknowledge gap, the Water Research Foundation and the CSIRO, Australia jointlydeveloped a framework to adopt IUWM approach to strategic planning of urban watersystems (referred to as IUWM Planning Framework). This paper discusses …

Modelling Human Health By Levels Of Biological Organization, Wilfred R. Cuff, Clifford Clark, Paulette Richard, Venkata R S K Duvvuri

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The hierarchy of levels in the organization of matter, or the “hierarchy of life”, is a fundamentalconcept in biology, and biologists are used to thinking about their work asbeing at a particular level. Yet medicine, in both research and application, operatessomewhat independently of this concept, working almost exclusively at levels at or belowthe individual. Through the relatively-recent expansion of epidemiology, medicinedoes reach up to the level of the population - but medicine at higher levels of biologicalorganization remains under-developed. In this paper we review the biological idea ofhierarchy of life and explore what medical research and practice might look like …

From Prediction To Learning: The Implications Of Changing The Purpose Of The Modelling Activity, Marcela Brugnach Jul 2010

From Prediction To Learning: The Implications Of Changing The Purpose Of The Modelling Activity, Marcela Brugnach

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

During the last decades, there has been a growing interest in the use of models for natural resource management. While early models were theoretical representations of simple systems designed to predict, in time or space, the behaviour of a system, current modelling applications expand beyond prediction. Models, and particularly the whole model building process, have become useful tools to support dialogue, learning and negotiation processes in stakeholders groups. For example, models are currently being used to improve collaboration between expert and stakeholder groups, to facilitate the negotiation between conflicting parties, or as a tool for group reflection, just to mention …

Social Shopping Using Food Spimes, Timothy Maciag, Daryl H. Hepting, Joann Jaffe, Katherine Arbuthnott, Darryl Dormuth

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Bruce Sterling defines spimes, in part, as extensively rich streams of data and informationabout things. From a theoretical viewpoint, the concept of spimes is indeed interesting, with seemingly endless possibilities for enriching our knowledge about the things all around us.In terms of our everyday decision-making activities, spimes could have significant influence onour behaviours, empowering us to make more informed choices. No where is this more true thanin topics relating to sustainability, especially in how sustainability relates to the selection of thefood that we eat. With vast amounts of information available, the issue of selecting good food canbe difficult and more adequate …

Development Of A Land-Use Component For An Integrated Model Of The German Biogas System, A. Schaldach, D. Lapola, U. Jessen, M. Thees, Ruediger Schaldach

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Germany is one of the biggest producers of biogas in Europe. Biogas can either be combusted in highly efficient combined heat and power units to produce electricity and heat, or upgraded to biomethane for injection into the natural gas grid. As political conditions encourage the installation of new biogas plants, their number and capacity is expected to grow significantly in the next few years. In Germany, energy crops play an important role for biogas production. Due to their relatively low energy content transport distances from the field to the plants are a crucial issue for the efficiency of the biogas …

Environmental Information Management Systems As Templates For Successful Environmental Decision Support, N. W. T. Quinn Jul 2010

Environmental Information Management Systems As Templates For Successful Environmental Decision Support, N. W. T. Quinn

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The mantra that successful Environmental Decision Support Systems (EDSS’s) are those that benefit from a high level of end-user involvement during the design phase and subsequent implementation is well founded. However the practical matter of eliciting the relevant information from stakeholders to develop a useful and robust EDSS is rarely adequate and this weakness contributes to the high rate of failed EDSS’s. Stakeholders sometimes have difficulty articulating the decisions they are called upon to make and cannot definitely describe the bounds of the decision space within which they operate. The EDSS developer is challenged by having to understand the system …
